One date. One missed chance. One mission to find love.

At 31-years-old, Helen Pines is far from where she thought she would be. Whilst her ex-boyfriend is now engaged, Helen’s still eating ready meals for one, wistfully dreaming of her last first date.

Determined to give online dating a go, she matches with drop-dead-gorgeous Brody, and they hit it off immediately.

One date later, Helen’s heart is still singing. Brody’s everything she’s looking for in a man – sexy, charismatic, and the perfect gentleman. But then she receives an error message on the app… all her contacts have been deleted.

With nothing but Brody’s name and job title to go on, Helen is determined to track him down.

But despite the initial chemistry, Helen realises she knows surprisingly little about her mystery man… Was it really love-at-first like, or will she find a new love along the way?

An utterly hilarious laugh-out-loud romance that will have you grinning from ear to ear from the first page to the last! Fans of Our Stop and Mhairi McFarlane will love this book.

The Last First Date was a lighthearted, fun read that I enjoyed very much. I had never read anything from Hayley Quinn, but will look for books by her now. The book centers around 31 year old Helen Pines, whose last boyfriend broke up with her a year ago, and is now engaged. Helen thought he was the one even though none of her friends and family ever thought so.

On a trip home to visit her parents and her nan, Helen signs up for an online dating app. Her Nan G, quite the character, has convinced her that she needs to do this. Helen meets Brody in the app and agrees to meet him for lunch the next day. They have a wonderful first date and he says he'll be in touch to plan their second date. In Brody's profile on the dating app he said he was looking for his last first date.

Helen is confused as she never hears back from Brody. It turns out the dating app crashed and all contacts and info was lost. The app started up again, but nothing was left from before the crash. Helen and Brody had never swapped contact info as they communicated through the app. Now Helen has no way to contact Brody and vice versa. Helen fantasizes about Brody and their date and truly believes he is the one. She is convinced she must find him and with help from her friends sets out to do just that.

This book has a lot of scenes that will make you laugh out loud as the search for Brody goes on and it also has some poignant moments about love, dating, and who the right one is for each of us. I can't say much more without giving the story away, but do yourself a favor and get this book as soon as it's available!

I would like to thank NetGalley and HarperCollins for the advanced copy of the book.

thank you to netgalley and harper collins for the e-arc!

the last first date follows helen, a woman who is tired of being single and thinks she’s finally found the man of her dreams when she connects with br*dy on a dating app. blah blah things happen and they lose contact and she is determined to find him and live out her happily ever after.

what to say about this “book”? there is so much to say, and so little time. to start, the writing was pretty bad—there were an insane number of ellipses on every single page and the dialogue was terrible as well. i visibly cringed at so many lines in this!!! i’m not even kidding, there’s a part where someone just. replies to a question by singing a song by the weeknd?????

also this woman’s biggest problem is that she doesn’t have a boyfriend? girl you’re british, worry about that first!

it’s just so hard to put my critiques for this book into words because i feel like you need to read it to understand, but i would not wish that upon my worst enemy. if i could give this author one piece of advice, it would be to try reading a book (any book, seriously) before writing another one.

EDIT: oh my god i totally forgotten to mention the spanish character and how she CONSTANTLY mentions “being latin” and starts every sentence with “amiga” and people make comments like “she’s annoyed, but in the latin way” or “latins — they basically get dance moves as a birthright.” WHAT???

When Helen finds herself single after her ex boyfriend cheats on her, she downloads a dating app to see what her options are. A match and subsequent first date with Brody seems too good to be true but what happens when the app loses their profiles and conversation?

I thought this was a pretty cute book. It was shaping up to be a fairly standard chick flick style but I was really happy and surprised by the way it turned out. I enjoyed all of the characters and I liked how there were storylines other than just Helen's which made it feel more like a complete novel rather than just a flat romance.

4/5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and the author for this copy to review.

The Last First Date is a romcom following Helen who when tired of being single, joins a dating app.. the morning of an amazing first date ends in terror when she awakes to find a data crash, and no way of finding her 'last first date.'

I really wanted to love this. With a super fun premise I had highly anticipated for it to be a romance I would be enthralled in, however I unfortunately wasn't. For the most part I found the plot incredibly unrealistic and it truly did show how desperately tired Helen was of single life, and the lengths she would go to in order to find the man that she had met for only a couple of hours. I also found the story fairly predictable and guessed the ending prior to any real plot beginning. I can definitely see why some people may enjoy this, it unfortunately just wasn't for me.

Unfortunately this book was not for me. The writing was choppy and often jumped from topic to topic. This made it hard to follow what was happening in the story. When Helen finally connected with the love interest I did not feel any chemistry between them, and I was not invested in their storyline.

The language used to refer to Helen's best friend Elle was stereotypical and unnecessary. Elle is Lantina and is referred to as "spicy" and "fiery" repeatedly throughout the book. She says she can dance because it's in her blood, and people who she's just met call her Amiga. Stereotypes like this are harmful, and I can't support a book that perpetuate them. I am hopeful the author will change these in the final version.

Thank you to NetGalley, HQ Digital, and Hayley Quinn for the eARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. I experienced a proper sense of deja-vu with this book: the story did not feel original and the characters were bland and uninteresting. I like a good romance story and always enjoy them when they make me laugh. Instead, this book from Quinn bored me close to tears and it felt like a copy of so many other books I have read recently.

Single Helen is the typical lonely woman, having returned home to live with her parents, mourning her previous relationship. Her ex, Jonathan, sounds like he was leading her on and it isn’t too surprising that this relationship never went anywhere. Except Helen cannot see this and wallows in Cornwall with her blogging and Instagram page stalling for lack of creativity. Finally turning to dating apps to move on from Jonathan, Helen has a magical first date with handsome Brody. But losing his details on the app encourages Helen to return to London and try and find this dream man. Sound familiar?

What follows is Helen stalking Instagram and anywhere she can remember that Brody might be. It is supposed to be funny but I found it tedious because it felt so reminiscent of similar stories. Although some of the character developments were surprising, it still wasn’t enough to keep me entertained and invested in the story. Despite loving Brody’s plea for a final first date in a hope to settle down, I don’t think the plot delivered that cutesy romance that is also implied by the cover. There was a lot of chat and not much else happening, when I think I would have preferred Brody to be less of an enigma and maybe even switching to his narrative perspective to add more depth to the story.

I also felt confused by Helen’s supposed career. Whilst Quinn describes how Helen writes articles for a living, alongside her Instagram page, I was bemused by how this would provide an actual income to live off, especially considering she rents in London. Coupled with her friend, Ish, who also is an Instagrammer, I could not understand how they could make a living whilst apparently not doing very much. It felt very unrealistic; I wish I could have the same magic money pot these characters appear to have!

To be honest, this was just about ok for a romance read but it was not very interesting. I thought so much more could have been done with the plot to make it entertaining. I enjoyed the different direction that Quinn eventually took the plot but, in my opinion, this was far too late coming and made for a slow and predictable narrative.

With thanks to HQ Digital and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The author was pretty new to me and I couldn't adjust with the writing style. The first few chapters were so slow and because of that I couldn't connect with Helen at all. The pacing was really slow and I kept being bored by the long internal monologues. The whole plot about meeting Brody through a dating app was so interesting and the cover caught my attention but sadly I struggled to feel the chemistry between Helen & Brody (I loved Ish & Elle though). I do appreciate the positive message that this book tries to portray by exploring the feelings of a single thirty year old woman but I feel that it didn't utilise the story's full potential tbh.

This book is hard for me to write a review without giving anything away, but I’ll try. The storyline was good and unique, actually keeping me guessing quite a way into the book on who she might end up with. Storyline ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The actual writing was a bit choppy, but I am guessing that was ARC formatting issues that may be cleaned up prior to production.

Watch for this book to come out on May 20, 2022.

Helen, recently dumped sets out to find her next match on a dating app. When said app crashes after a perfect date and all contact information is lost she sets out to find her date, “The One”. Through some crazy adventures to find Brody life still happens and she meets new friends along the way.
I loved Nanny G and all her spunk! I also saw that ending a mile away but was still a nice feel good story.

Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for this arc!

This book was kinda hard to get into in the beginning but I do relate to her a lot ! Being 30 and still having to date. And after being in a serious relationship. I didn’t like how she constantly puts herself down. I kinda hate that in books and she seems to do it alot

I’ve read books by HQ ! And I’m never disappointed. Thank you for this arc ! I woul reccomend this to anyone !

An utterly hilarious laugh-out-loud romance that will have you grinning from ear to ear from the first page to the last!

My Thoughts: This was a cute, laugh out loud, fun romantic read that I devoured pretty quickly. A perfect end of summer read (or beginning of summer). At first, I could not connect with Helen, while she is flawed and at times unreliable, what bothered me the most was how she judged her friends; then after the Brody obsession lifted, I felt like she grew as a character, became more likable and relatable. My most favorite character was Ish, he was adorable, kind, and charming, I connected immediately. The characters were well developed, witty banter, chemistry, and creatively written. The supporting characters were fantastic and such diversity. The author’s writing style was complex, emotional, and kept me engaged. Overall, this was a great read that I enjoyed. This book released in May and I would recommend as a good end of summer read.

Disappointing. I thought the book had a lot of potential, I loved the premise but it was poorly executed. There was a lot of telling and no showing. The writing style wasn't really my cup of tea. The characters were a bit superficial and weren't really thought out. Even the romance felt a little weird, it was rushed and there was absolutely no chemistry between the characters. Frankly, I'm not even sure this should be categorised as a romance.
Helen, the main character, was incredibly needy and immature for a 31-year-old woman. The first 2/3 of the book were so painful to read about. It was basically all about her desperate search for a man she met once, months ago, and with whom she was already in love. Everything Helen did, she did for that guy or because she was looking for that guy; her entire life choices revolved around him and her fear of being single. She was so unlikeable. I literally can not tell you one single thing about this character because the only thing she did was stalking that Brody guy.
Also, Helen has a friend, called Elle. Elle seemed to be from Spain (?) although the author kept referring to her as Latin (I'm not sure I get it). Elle was a living stereotype. She started every single sentence with the word "amiga" and apparently she was a great dancer BECAUSE she was "Latin". She's described as "spicy" many times in the book and I don't know if that's just me but I find that incredibly inappropriate and harmful.
That cover is great though...

Thank you to NetGalley, HQ Digital (Harper Collins UK), and Hayley Quinn for providing an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Last First Date by Hayley Quinn is an enjoyable, lighthearted and cute romance.

Helen Pine’s just discovered on social media that her ex-boyfriend has just got engaged and she’s devastated, she can’t believe that she was the one before ‘The One’!

Feeling that she’s going to end up a spinster Helen decides to give online dating a go and is matched with hot looking Brody and they have the perfect date. Unfortunately later the dating app crashes and all data and contacts are lost, despite not knowing a lot about Brody she is determined to track him down to go on a second date.

Helen is desperate to find Brody and she sets her mind on the cause but in some ways she seems a little unhinged and stalkerish.

There are some wonderful supporting characters in the story, Nanny G was my favourite and was by far the funniest and sweetest old lady. I also enjoyed the characters of Ish and Helen’s best friend Elle.

Will Helen find her last first date?

Helen Pines' dating life is in a shambles. Her ex has just gotten engaged, and she can't stop stalking his Instagram account, or walling in misery and anxiety. When she decides to try out online dating, and strikes gold with the handsome and charming Brody, things seem like they are finally looking up. But then the dating website crashes and loses everyone's data. Now Helen has no way to find Brody to have a second date just as magical as the first. But is Brody all he seems to be? And is he actually the one?

First off, this book should never have been categorised or marketed as a romance. Not only does Helen not spend any significant time with a love interest on the page, there is almost zero actual relationship development until after about 70% into the book. This would be much better categorised as women's fiction. It is a coming of age story (even though the antagonist is a 31 year old woman), who is overcoming anxiety and insecurity after an emotionally abusive relationship, and trying to navigate what dating and relationships mean to her. The romance was almost superfluous to the plot.

Helen spends most of the novel in her head, filled with anxiety and double-guessing herself at every turn. There are some nice moments with her grandmother and her story, and a few cute moments with the person she ends up with at the end, but she spends maybe less than 1% of the book actually in his presence doing something with him, and that mostly happens in the last 15% of the book. This does not fulfil the requirements of a romance novel.

The book was also categorised by choppy and undeveloped writing. It felt like a draft for a TV episode instead of writing for a book. I could imagine this making a better screenplay (with some work) than a novel. The friends and even the final significant other were also token "ethnic" stereotypes and their ethnicity seemed an afterthought and more of a ploy to be more "diverse". Ishan was even just described as a British Asian with brown skin, and then nothing else. An editor with sensitivity reading background would have been helpful in this regard. There were also two instances where characters wore Native-American headdresses for festivals, which is blatant cultural appropriation as neither character were Native American. This was not seen critically, but rather as normal and acceptable. These are instances were the author needed an editor to highlight how this could be problematic. Her friend Elle was also just a stereotype. She kept on referring to herself as Latin and seemed to be from Spain, and traditionally someone from Latin America would only use the term. It did not seem that the author had much background with people from other countries or ethnicities.

In conclusion, this book needs some re-working and recategorising. Thank you to NetGalley and HQ (Harper Collins UK) for this free eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I don’t even know where to start with this review. The plot was mildly interesting but the execution was awful.

Helen is a 30 year old who is trying to start dating. Her ex recently got engaged and she obsessively views their social media and engagement photos and compares herself. She meets a guy named Brody on a dating app and they really “hit it off” on their first date.

**By hit it off I mean she makes every decision based on how she thinks he’ll react. **

She then looses contact with Brody because the dating site crashes and she goes on a frenzy trying to find him again. She goes to parties, winds up stalking his friend’s social media, then follows him to a music festival. At the music festival when he SHOCKINGLY offers her drugs, she realizes he may not be the one for her.

She goes on one more date with him but ultimately realizes her friend Ish (who she met over the course of her man hunt for Brody) may be a better fit for her.

It’s so disheartening to read about a main character who’s entire life choices revolve around a man’s opinion. I get that she meets Ish and he likes her for herself, but honestly it’s just because she was so obsessed with Brody when they met. I can’t tell you one fact about Helen or her preferences other than that she bakes. And I honestly couldn’t even tell you if she enjoys baking. It’s not fun or interesting to read about a female main character whose life revolves around their relationship status. Her obsession with her ex and Brody were painful to read about.

I love romance books but this was just awful. Wouldn’t recommend.

This should be rebranded as: "You want to avoid writing a pick-me? This is what not to do"

I hate bitching on the girls in romances but god, Helen was so infuriating. Her whole life revolves around wanting a boyfriend and hating her friends for getting them and as someone who also regularly feels those things, this was like free therapy — I don't want to grow up to become a Helen.

Don't get me wrong, I've had some sweet first dates and been disappointed when I got ghosted but the level of obsession Helen brings to the table was just weird.

It takes her so long to realize that Ish wants to date her instead, that she's ON A DATE with him and still talking about the other guy.

So, just a painful read.

P.S.: As someone who's very good at stalking potential romantic partners (don't ask), why did it take them the whole book to get to Brody again, I'm sure that could've been solved easier.

This is Helen's story after her breakup and now she is tired of being single, she wants to get married and have a family.
Her Nanny makes her join a dating app, where she finds an eligible guy and goes on a really nice date with Brody. They plan to have a second date soon. But as soon as she is back the app crashes and she has lost the connection. From then, for the majority of the book, Helen tries to contact Brody through multiple ways.
I do appreciate the positive message that this book tries to portray by exploring the feelings of a single thirty year old woman but I feel that it didn't utilize the story's full potential.

This book follows Helen, who had finally decided to give love a go after seeing her ex's recent engagement. Upon signing up for a dating app, Helen matches with Brody and proceeds to have the best date with him. So good, in fact, that a second date seems guaranteed... until the app crashes and Helen loses Brody's contact. With the help of her friends, Sophie and Elle, Helen embarks on an adventure to find Brody and have her last first date. This adventure is full of family love, experiences Helen never would have imagined herself in, new friendships, and possible new love (that ISN'T Brody?!).

I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for a review!

At first, I found to find Helen rather unlikeable. One of the main reasons I found her to be unlikeable was her blatant judgement of her friends. She thought poorly of Elle for not wanting to settle down with a man, yet judged Sophie for doing just that because she thought Frank (Sophie's partner) was boring. Eventually I realized that Helen looked at her friends in this way because she was clearly envious of their attitudes towards love and dating and wished she had felt the same. Once Helen begin to get over her (somewhat creepy) obsession with Brody, I began liking her MUCH more.

I found her and Ish's friendship/relationship to be absolutely precious. Right off the bat I LOVED Ish. He was funny, charming, and memorable. He truly just seemed liked the guy everybody loves, and for good reason. Right from the moment that Helen met Ish I remember thinking "Helen! Go for Ish! He's the guy!" and found it incredibly frustrating when she didn't just do that. However, I think it was important for Helen to go through the experience with Brody the way in which she did for her to really appreciate Ish.

I won't bother giving Brody an entire section because he was really........... a tool. That's the best way I can describe him!

Overall, I really liked this book. The main character, that being Helen, was flawed and imperfect. She wasn't immediately likeable but I ended up rooting so hardcore for her in the end that I was squealing with joy at her happy ending. The side characters were absolutely AMAZING and I loved seeing the diversity among them - from LGBTQIA+ characters to people of colour. This book was really enjoyable and I thought everything ended on a really nice note.

I loved how real and honest this book felt! I think so many of Quinn’s readers will really be able to relate to Helen and her dating experience. The pressures to find your person and to settle down ARE REAL and it was nice to have a character who truly represented that side of happily ever after; the jerks, the anxiety, the questions from family, the dreaded internal clock and the crazy lengths people will go to to find love!

I also really enjoyed how this book did not solely focus on Helen’s happily ever after, but also her personal growth - there was a real transformation in her self confidence and her approach to life and love and I think she had her sassy Nan (what a great character) and her fearless friends to to thank for that!

There was something about the timing that felt off while reading this one! There were parts of the story that dragged on a bit but there were also times when I wanted more hilarious adventures with Helen!

Overall, I quite enjoyed this read and think others will as well! A big thank you to HQ and Netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC of this fun, quirky love story in exchange for my honest review!

Thank you to HQ for giving me an eARC in exchange for my honest review.

I loved this book! Helen is a freelancing baker who wants to go on her last first date. She thinks she's met the perfect guy on a dating app, but the app crashes the next day, leaving her with no way to contact him. The book follows Helen as she tries to track down her "perfect" man.

As per usual, I fell in love with the side characters. Helen's best friends Elle and Sophie were so supportive and I cannot talk enough about Nanny G. I could read an entire book of Nanny G's life.

My favorite part of the book was Helen's personal journey. I love a good romance, but the individual character arcs are important to consider. She had a bad relationship in the past she's working to ovrecome while her friends are going their own ways. I could relate to the moments where Helen felt left behind as one friend gets engaged. I love seeing the main character as they grow and overcome their challenges. I think Hayley Quinn did an excellent job at this.

I can't say too much more without spoiling, but be sure to check out The Last First Date when it publishes. I will definitely be buying this when it comes out.

Thank you to HQ Digital and Netgalley for an ARC of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Before even getting past the synopsis, I thought I had THE LAST FIRST DATE all figured out: girl meets guy, girl has amazing date/day/conversation/adventure with guy, girl can’t get in touch with guy because of some mishap, girl searches and eventually finds guy. Simple, right? However, THE LAST FIRST DATE delves into some pretty emotional topics.

Helen is a thirty-one year old not-so-successful baking blogger who is in a bit of a slump after discovering that her most recent ex-boyfriend is engaged. She joins a dating app at the suggestion of her beloved grandmother and almost immediately has it off with Brody, the CEO of his own thriving company. After an amazing date, Brody never gets in touch, and enter the mishap! Helen can’t get Brody off her mind, sure he is going to be her last first date, and does everything she can to find him, all while growing and experiencing new things that might affect the way she sees this man she thought was so perfect for her.

THE LAST FIRST DATE was funny and cute (and I loved how everything wrapped up in the end, especially who Helen falls in love with!), but it is also going to resonate with so many people, especially those who feel as if they are falling or have fallen so far behind as their friends and contemporaries encounter these milestones we’re all expected to be working towards.

This was delightful! And such a perfect light-hearted, palette cleansing beach read.

Helen hasn’t dated since her last relationship ended and at the suggestion of her Nan, she gets on a dating app and meets a man named Brody.

Helen and Brody have instant chemistry and a lovely date but they don’t exchange numbers and the app they met on loses all of their data the next day with no way to get in touch, as Brody’s only appearance on social media are a few photos on his work’s website.

However, what I thought was going to be really predictable from the beginning really took a turn and kept me guessing! This story has some really great female friendships, close family bonds, themes of finding yourself and the importance of choosing the right partner and also some truly lovely moments that made me smile so big!

Some of the transitions from one scene to the next scene in the book are a bit choppy, but not enough that you can’t follow along.

I really enjoyed how the epilogue was done too, I thought this was a really creative and fun way to catch me up on the characters lives.

4 stars!

This was such a cute and quick read! The online dating part and feeling hopeless about dating was so relatable. I’m glad the main character got her happy ending. I really thought Brody was “the one”after that first date!🤣Looking forward to reading more from the author.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐💫 (3.5)
Steam Level: 🔥🔥 (2.5- fade to black sex scenes)

Helen is convinced that she's unlucky in love after years of bad luck on dates and now finding out her last boyfriend is engaged. So when she connects with Brody through a dating app and has a memorable first date, she holds tight to the belief that she's found The One. Unfortunately, she wakes up to find that the app has crashed, leaving her with no way to contact Brody. Now she's determined to use what she knows in order to find him again and live happily ever after. Can she find her dream man or is she destined to be alone forever?

This story had an intriguing plot that had some similarities to Just Haven't Met You Yet by Sophie Cousens. Unfortunately Helen's story isn't quite as loveable, but it does have some interesting moments. This would probably fit better in the women's fiction category since the main storyline is focused on Helen accepting herself and changing her outlook on love. There were a few times when her attempts to find Brody came off as a bit desperate, and I think it's obvious early on that Brody might not be the perfect man Helen thinks him to be. My absolute favorite character in the story was Ish! He was so sweet and genuine, and I really wish we got more of him throughout the book. If the author had leaned into his moments with Helen and expanded upon that a bit, then this would definitely have gotten a higher rating from me.

Thank you to Netgalley and HQ Publishing for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I really liked this book, it reminded me of Our Stop by Laura Jane Williams. This book kinda made me sad at parts. But it had unexpected turns and i was so invested!! I read it in 1 day! I would definitely read this again!!!
Thank you NetGalley & HQ for the ARC in exchange for a honest review

A relatable single woman story full of all the obsessions and self-doubt that most women go through. It was a bit slow to get going and the level of obsession and low self esteem continued on and on for so long that I almost wanted to give up reading the book, but it wasn’t long after this point that it finally started to turn around. The remainder of the book was a great insight into the fantasy we create in our mind vs what the reality is, and what we think we want vs what will actually make us happy.

Thank you so much to Netgalley and the author for providing me with this ARC. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

I loved the blurb of this book so I was super thrilled when I got this ARC, which follows the story of Helen, in her 30’s trying to get back in the dating game after finding out her boyfriend cheated on her. Single and ready to mingle she downloads a dating app to see what her options might be, and just like that- a match and date set up with a guy name Brody. Brody seems to good to be true really, but she think this guy might be the the one she goes on a last perfect date with. That is until the app crashes and loses all their information, data, profiles and conversations.

Distraught but determined she goes out to go find this ‘too good to be true’ man while in the process of finding herself as well. Will she find him? Will this truly be her last first date?

I have to say it took me a while to get into this book, and the reading style was something to get used too. I can’t elaborate too much without giving spoilers, but it was entertaining and I liked the focus on the importance of good friends and family, along side the romance. I absolutely adored Ish and Elle.
I liked the concept and the positive message about how tough it is for single woman especially in their 30’s to find someone, and I enjoyed Helen’s personal revelations about who she is and what se wants as well. As these feelings were explored I couldn’t help but feel like the execution fell a bit flat. This story had a lot of potential, and was enjoyable, I just expected A BIT more.

Wow, does Hayley Quinn have a window into my diary / texts with the girls? She captured all of the anxious thoughts we have as single 30-something women forced to engage in the online dating scene. I can think of multiple texts I have with my bestie building someone up in our heads only to be let down by reality. In the end, I really appreciated the message of the book—we do need to try to find peace in being single and appreciate what we have while we have it. We need to strive to avoid allowing others / society to make us feel like we are doing something wrong. I only give it 3 stars for two main reasons: the pacing and the characters. For a short book, it took me awhile to get through because I kept getting bored with the internal dialogue. Additionally, although the the themes were relatable, the characters were not. So much else about the book felt normal—can we please stop with making characters successful influencers? That’s not the only career path millennials fantasize about! And if we gave our protagonist a run-of-the-mill job, then her feelings of being average or ordinary would feel like they came straight from my diary that I write after a long day in front of my computer in the office. Which is what the author achieves with every other part of the book.
