“The reason rebounds exist, why they happen so often, is that when you’ve been hurt, a distraction makes you forget the pain. And I’ve been told I’m an excellent distraction.”
“As long as I’m with you, everything’s all right.”

“I promise to carry you through life, to comfort and protect you. To keep you safe. You asked me once what my passion was, and I’ve finally found it. It’s you.”
‘There weren’t many people I flat-out didn’t like—I got along with everybody and, other than my siblings, avoided conflict unless it was over a thing I had passion for. Lila Parker was my exact opposite. Where I was unruffled, Lila shook her tail feathers like a peacock. Where I’d rather have a beer together than argue, she seemed to argue as her primary mode of communication. And yet, here I sat, wondering over her, curious as to the fire that had forged her and the person who’d lit it.’

‘The moment we were free of them and nestled in the near darkness, I turned her, cupped her face, and descended for a kiss in a single motion. Surprise stiffened her lips, but in a heartbeat, they yielded, softened, opened to meld to mine. We were a knot of arms and legs and heavy breaths before either of us knew it, and for that brief stretch of time, nothing needed to be said or decided or discussed. It was just the simple truth of her and me.’

“There was no lesson to learn, Lila. She should have known better.”
“No, it was an important lesson, the most important lesson I’ve ever learned — people will manipulate you, if you let them. And no one will save you but yourself.”
Sadness touched his face, smoothing his lips, his eyes, his brow. But he didn’t disagree, didn’t pity me or tell me I was wrong. He just watched me for a long moment before finally saying with a quirk of his lips, “Think I can prove you wrong?”
A relieved laugh slipped out of me, along with the phrase of the hour, one I meant more deeply than he knew. “If anyone can, it’s you.”
‘I turned to press a kiss into her palm. “You didn’t do flings? Well, I don’t do serious. And I’ve realized I am very serious where you’re concerned.”
“Well, lucky for you, I’m a pro,” she teased, giving me the words I’d given to her what seemed like ages ago. “And for the record, I’m very serious where you’re concerned too. I’m not going anywhere, Kash — I’m afraid you’re stuck with me.”
“Promise?” I asked with a sideways smile.
“Promise,” she echoed, stretching up to seal it with a kiss that washed my worry away, leaving only my trust and faith in her. In us.’

“For the first time in my life, I wished I was something else. Something more.”
“Can we be more? Will you be mine? If I promise you something, will you do the same? If I fall in love with you, could you love me too?”
“You are a diamond, Lila Parker—brilliantly shining and completely unbreakable.”
“If I asked you for more, would you give it?”
“Lila, I’d give you anything you asked. I think you know that.”
Love doesn’t care where you come from, only who you are.
Somehow it was a comfort, to know that even when I was at my biggest and loudest and most barkey, he could handle it. Handle me.
There was no way to separate myself from the truth—I was in over my head. I was at her mercy. And I couldn’t turn back if I wanted to.
