A strict schoolmistress. A degenerate duke. One house standing between them.
Weary of his decadent life, the wicked Duke of Rochford arrives in Bath with every intent to turn over a new leaf. But when the prim, meddling, feisty headmistress of the neighbouring school unleashes her outspoken opposition to Marcus’s presence, he decides to turn his new house into a gambling den, if only to vex her.
Miss Eleonore Hilversham, headmistress of the Seminary for Young Ladies in Bath, has one aim in life: to run the most exclusive school in all of England. When she discovers that the property she needs has been snitched from right under her nose, she vows to get rid of the new owner, even if he is a powerful duke.
When tragedy strikes at the height of their conflict, both unveil facets of themselves that they have hitherto managed to hide. What heartbreak does Miss Hilversham harbor, and is the wicked duke really that wicked?
Can love prevail and triumph over clashing goals and personalities?
A sweet enemies to lovers Regency romance that is part of the Wishing Well Seminary series.
What a wonderful story that is follows the original Wishing Well Series. Miss Hilversham, the headmistress of the school will have her hands full when a well known scoundrel decides to buy the property next door to her girl's seminary. A property that she had been promised to buy to make an extension to her school.
The man who is known as the wicked Duke of Rochford was introduced in the original series as the long missing guardian of Pen. He is tired of his decadent lifestyle and buys a property in Bath to try to redeem his life. He had no idea that the prim and proper school mistress would shake up the quiet life he was trying to get used to in Bath. Their verbal sparring matches challenge make him feel alive as he decides to vex her by opening a gambling den in his new property. She has no choice but to get him back by importing chickens and a rooster to destroy his late mornings in bed. The morning choruses of hymns manage to drive him crazy but nothing she does gets him to leave.
Everything between the two of them will change when the Duke comes to the rescue of the inhabitants of the seminary when a fire destroys the building. Miss Hilversham will begin to see the Duke in a different light as he reveals some deep harbored guilt. The Duke of Rochford will also discover some things about Miss Hilversham that will reveal much more than a prim schoolmistress.
This story proved that two very mismatched people could have more in common than first believed.
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.
I can tell you right now, I am going to love this series. The first book to start off the Wishing Well Seminary series takes off from the first page and goes to so many wonderful places with Eleonore and Marcus and their story.
If you want a story chuck full of witty banter and humor, the enemies to lovers trop and so much more, pick this book up. Sofi Laporte did such a great job with this story, it will entertain you the entire way through while also giving you all the feels, all the emotions that come with heartache, loss, redemption and a sweet romance that will make your heart swoon.
Laporte does such a great job at sucking you into the story. There were so many different parts that I fell in love with. Every interaction, obstacle that gets placed before them brings out such fun and interesting sides in the characters. I love where these things take them, especially when they both get to town. Let me just say, without spoiling the plot or anything, when they meet up in town, I was all for the twists and turns and what they did for Eleonore and Marcus's love story. Such a great read and can't wait to read book two.
*I received a complimentary copy from the publishers, publicists, and/or authors. A review was not required, and all opinions are my own.
First off, I'll say that after reading Penelope And The Wicked Duke, I checked out the blurb for this one and was honestly excited to see Marcus got his own book, since his role as a secondary character in the previous book was left open. I thought this one sounded like a lot of fun, and it was!
It was a sweet, charming story. I loved how things played out; the enemies to loves, the feud, the sudden alliance, the friendship, and then a marriage of convenience turned real thing.
Marcus and Eleonore were absolutely perfect together. Their quick tempers, sharp minds, and verbal sparring, made them an ideal match. Marcus helped Eleonore loosen up, and Eleonore helped Marcus tighten up. And as you peel away the layers of both of them, you see that they have pasts, hurts, fears, goals, and desires that may not be so different from each other's after all.
Pair that with immersive writing, comical situations, laugh out loud moments, and plenty of heart, there was very little I didn't like about this book.
A few of the things I wasn't fond of were a few aspects of the story that pushed the boundaries of "clean." Such as, some curse words, some crude remarks, and a lot of not-explicit-but-still-a-little-detailed talk of Marcus' past involving his years of wild living.
There were also a couple plot points that I was unsure about while reading. but I ended up liking how events played out.
Everything came together with a sweet building of story, relationships, and romance that came together for a satisfying and enjoyable ending. I liked this one a lot and am considering adding the next book in this series to my TBR.
3.5 stars Lovely. The first part of the story - about 30% - almost made me reluctant to continue. The male hero was really obnoxious to the heroine. They bickered constantly. He insulted her. She scolded him. They challenged each other. Not one nice word was exchanged between them. But then, stuff happened, and he showed his 'heart of gold', hidden inside his vexing exterior. In consequence, I warmed up to him, and so did the heroine, and I enjoyed the remainder of the book and their mid-life romance.
This could have been fabulous but sadly, for me, it failed abysmally. I thought that this time it would be an adult story with wounded, damaged, mature characters and we could have seen the emotionally satisfying development of that love. Instead, it was predictable and pedestrian. I wanted much more on the recognition that they loved, liked and respected each other and that their future would be fabulous. There is a lot to like in what this writer produces but it’s just not my cup of tea.
I have read several books by this author and his is one my favorites. Her stories are well developed and full of wonderful characters. They are clean and wholesome and appropriate for anyone who enjoys a fun story with a happy ending.
Miss Eleanore Hilversham was the school mistress of an all girls school in Bath. She was prim and proper and well organized. When the Wicked Duke of Rockford moves in next door to the school, Miss Hilversham is confused and angry because she had been promised the opportunity to buy that home to expand the school. She is disgusted by the Marcus, the Duke. He is a well-known scoundrel who lives riotously and without concern for others. But, he is tired of the old life and moves to Bath to a quieter lifestyle. When he spars with Miss Eleanore, though, she stirs something in him that makes him want to set her off kilter from her prim and proper ways.
When the school burns down and the Duke risks his life to rescue the inhabitants, include Miss Eleonore, both of them begin to see each other in a new light and when secrets are revealed, maybe they aren't so different from one another, after all.
I highly recommend this book and, as always, there is a happy ending.
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.
Miss Hilversham has great plans to expand her seminary to the house next door - but just as she's saved the required money to purchase it, it's sold from under her. And not to just anybody: to the Wicked Duke, who riles her up in every way, including declaring his intentions to start a gambling hell in the house. But she's not going to give up easily - whatever might be required to drive him away, she'll try (short of anything illegal, of course). Then tragedy strikes and shows each of them a new side of the other. Can tragedy lead to a happy ending?
This was a sweet, at times humorous story of two people who start off thinking the worst of each other but gradually learn to see their true characters. Probably not in any way a new idea - but I really enjoyed how it was done, and appreciated the way the author unfolded their respective characters. Add in an ancient secret coming to light at last and some practical jokes on either side, and I felt that this book had really been worth the read. Interesting characters, fun dialogue, the odd minor mystery and a satisfying ending - what more could one want?
Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
An amazingly sweet clean story of a headmistress of a school for girls and her new neighbor The Wicked Duke. I admired Eleonore/Violette for all she had lived through and came out on the other end a strong loving woman. But when it came to the duke Marcus who provoked her like no other, she always had a sharp word and witty repartee. Marcus and Eleonore became instant enemies. I had to laugh at the pranks they played on each other. It led to Marcus rescuing several children and Eleonore when the school was engulfed in flames. Eleonore did not know what she was to do. Thankfully Marcus was there for her. When she needed someone the most he was there. Then secrets were revealed, wounds opened and healing started. Reunions long overdue happened and a wish at the wishing well came true. A lovely story with wonderful characters that tell a realistic story ends happily for all.
I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Reasons I enjoyed this book: Easy-to-read Entertaining Funny Happily Ever After Realistic Unpredictable Witty Wonderful characters
Well, Sofi Laporte has done it again. She has penned another lovely novel that I could not put down. What I love about her writing is how immersive her world is. There is no long, drawn out annoying backstory and overly descriptive and flowery adjectives describing the characters and setting presented over 50 mind numbing pages of chapter 1. What you get is a gradual unfolding of the story, where you eased into their universe. It teases you just enough to where you burn your roast, and you’re 20 minutes late picking up your kid from drama club because you just can’t stop reading!
The H and h were utterly charming with their tit for tat schemes. Any book that causes me to laugh out loud is an automatic 5 stars in my world.
I received an ARC for free, and I am once again more than happy to leave my glows voluntarily.
This was my first book by this author so I was happy to find out she is a great writer. The story took place in a unique regency setting. It took place mostly at a girl school in Bath. I loved that both characters were older (in their thirties). It made them both have interesting pasts and perspectives on life. I loved both Marcus and Eleanor so much. Every time they were together or anytime they tried to get the best of one another I was laughing out loud. Their bickering banter was so hilarious and they both secretly loved doing it. They love getting a rise out of each other. I love how the opposites in their personalities made them such a great team though. This book took turns I honestly didn’t see coming but I liked it. I like that Marcus really does have his vices but has a secret heart of gold. And I like that prim and proper Eleanor is more than she seems too. It was a very entertaining read.
SPOILERS and book notes: The setting is Bath England! Eleonore made a lapidarium of Roman artifacts. Bc it is ancient Roman baths in the city. A lapidarium is a place where stone (Latin: lapis) monuments and fragments of archaeological interest are exhibited. Ooo a Celtic wishing well! Marcus overcame an alcohol and opium addiction. And his friend Fariq was a little boy when he picked him up in India and now he is filthy rich and owns a gambling den. But fariq is the one to help him overcome his addictions and move to bath. Fariq and Marcus banter is sooooooo funny. I am dying. “She made him feel like a school-boy. He disliked her immensely.” He loooooved goading her so much though. Bahaha this is hilarious. coming up with the idea to build a gambling den next to her school just to bug her. I am DYING. He is enjoying himself. This gambling den and bugging the head mistress has brought purpose and life back to Marcus haha. And miss hilversham who is always in control of her emotions and herself shakes with passion anger bc of Marcus bahaha. Marcus called her priggish schoolmistress and it really got under her skin. Marcus can cook for himself and made her an Indian drink. He likes their spices and not bland English food. He survived two wars and a fortnight alone in the jungle so he knows how to cook. Holy moly a reformed rake indeed he is! What a past! I LOVE the brother bond of Marcus and Fariq. I am cackling bc of this book. They are doing the funniest things to pester each other. Eleanor got a rooster. “That woman is driving me to insanity!” he roared. “Fariq! My pistol!” “Are you going to shoot her now?” “Yes. After I’ve shot that blasted chicken.” “A male chicken who crows is commonly called a rooster.” “Fariq!” “Your Grace?” “Don’t you dare.” “Dare what?” Fariq looked at him with wide eyes. “Become schoolmistress-ish on me. She may be a haberdasher of pronouns, but you are not.” “I can’t help it. It does seem to rub off on one somehow-all right, all right.” Fariq lifted both hands with a grin. “Your pistol is in the bottom drawer.” I love how much he messes up her last name on purpose. “Miss hilverjam, Miss hilvermam madame puss madame hellcat” “Madame hellcat,” he said in a husky voice. “I like it,” then he lowered his face and kissed her on the lips.” Awww! Then she slaps him bahaha. A fire at the school where both Marcus and eleoner showed their true colors! Bravery kind selflessness. And eleoner laughed at the danger at the end! And then Marcus offered up his home to the girls after. And deaf little May slept with him. Awwww now all 25 girls hero worship him for saving them from the fire. And now they are having school at his house. “He wasn’t half as bad a man as she originally thought him to be. He was just—a bit like a layered onion, she supposed. She happened to like onions.” Aww and they kissed! And brought hope to Eleanor. But Marcus is terrified of love!! Eleanor has an illigitament child in the foundling home she can’t find! Plot twist! And Marcus helps her find her but she has a fever. And in her fever bed Eleanor says is: “you and hope(her daughter)” “what about me and hope?” “I love the most.” She felt oddly light and at peace after that. “Oh no you don’t. You hate me remember? We fight all the time.” “You have to get well quickly so you can keep on hating me.” A secret lost child AND now a marriage of convenience or forced marriage fake marriage really. Bahaha this book. And when she descended the stairs and he couldn’t breathe bc of how beautiful she was all he said was “you’ll do” and then she said back dryly “so will you”. But they both secretly know they think each other handsome and beautiful hahaha. She found her 18 yo daughter! And she is soooo happy with her parents and got married the same day as her and Marcus. And Eleanor got to witness it. And her and Marcus built up the school again and have a baby on the way. Ugh I’m dying
What a wonderful story that is follows the original Wishing Well Series. Miss Hilversham, the headmistress of the school will have her hands full when a well known scoundrel decides to buy the property next door to her girl's seminary. The man who is known as the wicked Duke of Rochford was introduced in the original series as the long missing guardian of Pen. He had no idea that the prim and proper school mistress would shake up the quiet life he was trying to get used to in Bath.
This was a fun and entertaining read. I loved both of the lead characters. This is a great book to read when you want something light and interesting.
Miss Eleonore Halversham is the epitome of a prim and proper school mistresses. Or is she? She has a past that might shock some, but she’s worked hard to keep that past secret. As far as most living know, she’s the perfect person to lead a seminary for proper young ladies. And she has plans for that seminary.
Marcus Downing-Smith, Duke of Rochford, the Wicked Duke, is a rake and proud of it. But beneath his bad boy veneer, he also has a past that brings him pain. When he manages to purchaser the house next to the seminary, Miss Halversham’s plans for her school are dashed.
When the two are brought together, it isn’t love at first sight. They despise each other initially, but the reader will have great fun watching as these enemies move from hate to love. I loved every moment of this book, especially the banter between the two. And don’t discount Miss Halversham’s ability to take actions that will stymie the Duke’s plans.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.
It happens a lot in historical fiction romannce, that a character from one series appears in the next. I just never would have guessed that it would be true of the wicked duke.
I love love stories where the two people have similar ghosts. Eleanor carrying around a curl of hair, and Marcus carrying around a portrait was pretty similar. I thought that maybe I knew what Eleanor 's secret was ,but I wasn't sure if this author would do that story.
I wasn't sure how to feel about Marcus until the fire. I'm telling you I had chills on my scalp. If you still can't stand Marcus after that, well, I don't know how your heart could be so cold. Of course, I'm sure most readers fell on love with him in Pen's book, which seems to be a thing among readers of romance.
I wasn't sure how i felt about Eleanor's secret. Once it came out in the open, how did I want it to go? I couldn't decide. And at what I thought was the climax of that story, I felt empty. But, if Sofi Laporte wanted that ending, I was going to deal with it. I should have known better. It got so much better.
The epilogue was perfect. My only gripe is little Mary. I kinda wanted them to adopt her. Ah, well.
Violetta Aka Eleanore is a school mistress with quite a reputation for great marriages with her teachers! She is described by Marcus Aka Duke of Rochford as parsimonious, prim and haughty and cold! They snip at each and exchange hilarious barbs and pranks on each other! Marcus kisses are delicious as he is touted as a rake and libertine it is not surprising! There are several laugh out loud moments and nonstop action! If you love heros who run into a burning school and secretly have a heart of gold then you don’t want to put this down! Eleonore has secret heartache and pain and she pores love into her school and students to make up for it! Marcus has more layers than an onion peeled back slowly he is my new book hero! I slowly warmed to Eleonore way of devious thinking and her tragic past! Get ready to hold to your seat as this rollercoaster turns into a love story! Bravo!
[2.5 stars] I didn’t like this one. Mostly because I didn’t care for either of the MCs and so didn’t wish to read about them or their story. The Duke is a complete scoundrel, a terrible womanizer and gambler. He was also an opium addict and drunk, but he managed to break free from that prior to the story beginning. He has a miserable personality, is mean and vindictive, and takes pleasure in tormenting others.
Though the FMC isn’t nearly as bad, I didn’t care for her either... and it somehow seemed appropriate that the two of them should end up together.
Though I’ve read books from this author that I absolutely adore, this book is not one I recommend.
Content: There is some mild swearing (words like ‘hell’ and ‘piss’). Though the romance does not go beyond a couple lightly descriptive kisses, there are many many references to sex outside of marriage. There are a couple references to idols and heathenism.
Trigger warnings - past addictions, and contemplations of suicide
Sofi Laporte is a new author for me. So glad I discovered her. Miss Hilversham (head schoolmistress) and the Duke of Rochford (a complete rogue) hit head on from the first night they met. Sharp, witty dialogue, well-formed characters and a plot worthy of a true HEA entertained with each page. I appreciated Miss Laporte's ability to show her characters through dialogue and spot-on activity rather than using unrelenting inner monologue by the characters. It kept the story crisp and clear. The next Wishing Well Seminary book is on my wish list and her previous books are now on my TBR list.
This book was just like Sofi Laporte's other perfect adventures. Eleanore and Marcus have a delightful banter. I love how much they love to torment each other. I love watching their relationship change. Their chemistry sizzled the whole time and they perfectly understood one another in a crazy world. There was also a beautiful depth to both of them and I enjoyed seeing them both face their demons and move forward to their future with hope.
Marcus is also the perfect hero. I loved him and Eleanore. So so sweet!
I just had a lot of fun, following Eleanore and Marcus, and following the story's plot.
I absolutely LOVED this book. The characters were unique and funny. I loved every interaction between the duke and Eleanore (they were hilarious together) The plot was interesting and enjoyable. Clear your schedule before starting this one because once you start reading you will not want to put it down! This author writes stories that deal with deep subjects, but she writes them with plenty of humor so you aren’t left depressed. I was so happy with the ending and now I can’t wait for more books in this series!
Although Sofi is a new author to me, I must say that she is one of my favorites now! I have enjoy every page of this book. The banter is delicious, Marcus is so so charming in his way and very funny and Eleonore ideas in order to deal with him are hilarious! The characters are very well written. The story is also so funny and the development is so good! I like the Indian references in history and objects, ( good research work, Sofi) and also the second characters and the connections with the previous Wishing well series. Cant wait to read the next book!
Eleanor appears to be a strict school mistress, but also has a regretful background with another name. The Duke seems to be a rake who selfishly uses his status to irritate Eleanor. Yet he suffers with nightmares of his past. These two meet under antagonizing circumstances. It is fascinating to discover their real personalities. When a tragedy occurs, deep mutual appreciation reveals admirable qualities. There is a fascinating plot with surprising tender twists !
🪙Miss Hilversham and the Pesky Duke🪙 was my favorite. The banter, the depth of the characters, the growth, the whole premise of the story was amazing! This one really hit the giggles on most of the pages. The pranks that got better and better, the banter that poked and prodded, but also the vulnerability hidden deep beneath the jokes. There was danger and dark secrets, and the secrets of the characters were not what you expected. This book was full of mystery and fun.
This book had me in stitches! The bantering and sizzling chemistry between the leads, Marcus and Eleonore, are entertaining, palpable and so well-written. I can see them, I can hear them goading each other. And I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and mysteries which led to their HEA. I chanced upon Sofi Laporte's writing during a "giveaway e-books" campaign and they're addictive. The works I've read so far are never dull and predictable, the tales of her characters so full of surprises and wit. Thoroughly enjoyable reads.
I was pleasently surprised the author decided to write a redemption story for the "wicked Duke" fro her last title in the Wishing well series and give the headistress from the same series a HEA. As always, this was a fun read/listen. I was done before I knew it since it has such a great flow, story line, characters and dialgoue. Some cheeky humor and clean romance. No language or fade to black. While this is a fun story it still has some heart and depth for the characters and their development. I like what she did with this enemy to lovers story.
I had a very uneven experience with the Wishing Well series, and this book is another sad disappointment. Even the author's usually sparkling writing style is dull and tedious here. The banter is not bantering, the humor is not humoring, the characters' characters change from scene to scene to fit the plot points, and the plot itself is all soap opera drama, and no sense. Complete with reappearance of long lost children, random devastating fires and dramatic entrance revelations. Delivered with much more seriousness than this author's usual style, the whole thing is just a boring slog.
The plot was quite standard with several unique twists which are rare in regency era stories. The twists are delicious. The repartee between H and h was quite entertaining and charming. The humor is beautifully placed and adds many marvelously light and airy zings that compliments and elevates the entirety of a splendid read. I am new to Ms. Laporte and she is a refreshing talent in the historical genre which has numbed many and resulted in decreased interest and purchases.
What a delightful book! A lovely story (no spoilers) and SO well written. It was a joy to "meet" people we'd already been introduced to in the Wishing Well series and get to know them even better. Sofi has a good understanding of the period she writes about and the story had an authentic feel about it. Looking forward to the next instalment in the series. (I had the privilege of receiving an ARC of this book.)
Epic regency enemy to lover story Miss Hilversham – who has changed her name to cover a youthful indiscretion – runs a finishing school for young ladies in a somewhat dilapidated house. The mansion she intended to buy to expand her school is bought by a duke, but what a duke! Womaniser, gambler, brandy and opium are no strangers to him and he does everything to annoy and infuriate his neighbours, who retaliate of course. This escalates until the school burns to the ground.
Funny, sweet, emotional love story of 2 people, both damaged and hurt by love, who are afraid to love again for fear of more pain. The starchy,Brigid school mistress and the dissolute, disillusioned, charming Duke have a contentious first meeting. Lots of funny situations because of their feud over a house. Then, things become serious and dangerous with a fire and everything changes. Lovely, deserving couple!
In this enemies-to-lovers clean romance, a sassy, prim blue stocking with a secret past and a rake of a Duke who’s only pretending at being ornery collide in all sorts of fun ways. Once barriers are torn down, the two protagonists begin to connect in thoughtful and surprising ways, and I was invested almost immediately. This romance breaks out of the character and plot cookie cutter mold, making it a lovely, satisfying read.
