Jordan Daniels always knew she had a brother and sister her mom left behind. Heck, her mom never let her forget she didn’t live up to their standards. But when she disappears from the limelight after her country star boyfriend proposes, the only place she knows to go to is to the town her mother fled and the family who doesn’t know she exists.
He won’t fall for another wild child.
Tanner Coleman was left in the dust once before when his high school sweetheart ran off to follow a rockstar around the world. He loves his roots, runs the family business, and will never leave Springbrook Hills. But when Jordan, with her lifetime spent traveling the world and mysterious history comes to work for him, he can’t help but feel drawn to her.
Can Jordan open up to him about her past and stay in one place? Can Tanner trust his heart with her, or will she just hurt him like his ex?
The Substitution is a contemporary office romance. It's book three in the Springbrook Hills series, but can be read as a standalone.
It is a full-length romance with a Happily Ever After that features sexually explicit material and profanity. This book is intended for 18+
Morgan is a born and raised Jersey girl, living there with her two boys, toddler daughter, and mechanic husband. She’s addicted to iced espresso, barbecue chips, and Starburst jellybeans. She usually has headphones on, listening to some spicy audiobook or Taylor Swift. There is rarely an in between.
Writing has been her calling for as long as she can remember. There’s a framed ‘page one’ of a book she wrote at seven hanging in her childhood home to prove the point. Her entire life she’s crafted stories in her mind, begging to be released but it wasn’t until recently she finally gave them the reigns.
I’m so grateful you’ve agreed to take this journey with me.
As I read through the Springbrook Hills series, I’m noticing that Morgan Elizabeth has the same pattern for the ✨spicy✨ scenes in all of her books. In the first book of hers that I read, it was great! But now that I’ve read five of them I almost wish the spice wasn’t there and that she instead had focused more on the plot and showing more of the character’s personalities.
Through each of her books, she’s done a great job of expanding the MC group and has made me interested in their lives, but they also seem pretty similar in that all of the men are strong, possessive, guys who still manage to uplift and support their independent, stubborn women. The way she writes the male’s dialogue can also be frustrating because she writes a lot of sentences like how we would speak in real life, and while there’s a time and place for that, in this book it gets to a point where it’s almost annoying. We know they’re in the south and we know that the “ing” sound usually ends up as “in’”, and that a lot of the time possessive nouns are often left off of sentences spoken in real life. But, this is a book, and not a book that was styled to be THAT kind of book.
There were also some random grammar issues and detail inconsistencies throughout this book, and some details that were lacking that sometimes got me confused about how we got from point A to point B.
Overall, this book was …. Fine. I definitely would not read it again and I’m unlikely to finish this series, BUT I did enjoy getting to know Tanner and Jordan’s story, especially after meeting them in the Ocean View series first.
I did not enjoy this book as much as the first and honestly, it feels like a whole different author wrote this book.
To start off with, I did not feel the chemistry between Jordan and Tanner. There was barely any build up, barely any meaningful conversations…they were just blah.
The steam and romance felt so recycled while also lacking chemistry. I wasn’t even sure who Tanner was in some of the scenes. He felt so random.
The plot was wild and not in a good way. So over the place. The author really tried but it just wasn’t for me.
Lastly, someone really needs to proofread this series. Grammatical errors everywhere, even with Jordan’s name not being capitalized.
I really don’t know if I’ll be finishing this series. I definitely need a break.
One of my new favourite books by this author! Jordan & Tanner are absolutely perfect for eachother and their relationship had the perfect dose of protectiveness mixed with spice 😉 I read this in one sitting and it definitely was the highlight of my morning.
One more thing: I know that especially Autumn's characterisation upset some people but as someone who's also been through the whole "secret-half-sibling-who-appears-out-of-nowhere"-drama, how she acted was so real and I could definitely relate.
I wouldn't say the troupe is enemies to lovers or anything like that, just seems like a more 'strangers to lovers' type romance. There is very few instances of pining or build up, and a good 70% of the book is after they've already kissed and become an item. Which, I don't mind! Pining is nice, but I love a story where the love interests get together rather quickly, and we get an entire book of their relationship and the trials and tribulations of it.
I adored the characters of Tanner and Jordan. Tanner is honestly the picture perfect dream of hometown hunk; sweet, listener, completely enamored by Jordan, and definitely a man who enjoys giving his partner pleasure. Jordan is the sweetest FMC, through most of the book anxious at her place in the town, her family, shy in discovering her desires and learning to communicate them with Tanner, and breaking free from the toxic life of her past.
This book could have gone on so much longer if I'm being honest, as I just wanted more and more of these two. Give me more happy, blissful moments of them! I'd watch a reality tv show with these two leads, that's how much I enjoyed them.
I've read a few of Morgan Elizabeth's books so far, and I adore her writing. It's hard for me to find an author who really dives into the SPICE 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ like Elizabeth. She hasn't let me down so far, and, despite the cons I found I had with this book, I look forward to reading the rest of her stories.
Going forward, There will be SPOILERS with my Favorites & Least Favs list, explaining why I only gave this book 4 stars.
Jordan finds her half siblings in Springbrook Hills along with the local construction work Tanner. She's broke and running from her ex and needs a job. Tanner comes to the rescue and tells her she can be his office manager while she gets back on her feet.
If you've read a Morgan Elizabeth book, they've all got a similar pattern. The men are possessive, and the women are in need of rescuing. The dialog throughout the series is repetative, but I'm still gonna read it. I think this one was my second favorite of the Springbrook Hills series.
Okay so I wanna give this a 3.5 stars because I really loved the second-chance family trope, like that was so cute of Morgan to add. And I was really shocked at who reported Jordan’s location, like I audibly gasped when it was revealed. I did get a little sleepy at the end because I despise a third-act breakup and a miscommunication trope, but I also feel like it worked well with the FMC’s personality?? This was not my fav in the springbrook hills series by far, but I still liked it enough. Also the Hannah and Hunter content we got >>>>>
one thing morgan elisabeth does well is write cute fluffy romance books. this is no exception. she has a way of making you fall in love with the characters and root for their happiness. if your looking for a feel good romance book with a happy ever after, look no further. these books are interconnected but can be read as standalones, and i love getting little snippets here and there of other characters i’ve read about, in a way continuing everyone’s story. i’ll rate it 3.75/5⭐️
3.5. i liked this a lot more than the last two but some of it was so dramatic lol. and autumn was so mean and then just? fine?
also i just hate a predictable act 3 breakup
still some editing issues where i have to go back to figure out what’s happening because there’s a word missing or misspell or missing quotations. better than the last 2 though
IMO this book wasn’t as good as the previous one and I was a little thrown through the whole book with the story line. I still enjoyed it and I feel in love with Tanner! I love that throughout the series there is added information about the main characters from the previous books, this series is a good series from what I’ve read so far and I’m looking forward to the last 2 books
Yet another great book in the Springbrook Hills series! Loved how Tanner stuck by and fought for Jordan. As always with Morgan Elizabeth, the spice, banter, and romance were top notch, as is the small town feel.
✔️ New in Town ✔️ Brother's Best Friend ✔️ Celebrity-esque ✔️ Workplace Romance ✔️ Boss/Employee ✔️ Small Town ✔️ First Person Dual POV ❕️ Mentions of past abuse (mental, emotional, and physical)
This was truly a beautiful story about 2 people whose love healed them. They complete each other beautifully, I really enjoyed the story (and the spice!)
Tanner and Jordan worked really well together and I like that their ex relationships were opposite but so similar I think it was healing for them both to find each other. Tanner just felt like such a genuine and loving guy he really deserved happiness and I was rooting for him the whole book! Jordan did feel a little flighty at times but I also was rooting for her and her healing from her mom and past relationship! This book felt full circle for their pasts and it was really nice to see them both healing their wounds but also diving in and finding happiness again.

First off the book was nice, the spice was good but it just felt a little dragged out. This is the 7th book of hers I’ve read and I like her books but I’ve come to realize all her FMCs are the practically the same. They’re all stubborn, refusing to let the MMC help. Even when the book is over half way done and they’ve been together for weeks. I also notice that they’re all kind of unrealistically oblivious, to hints and subtle things about behavior or things around them. They just ignore it or go “in the moment I didn’t realize.” I understand that in the moment you can get swept up in things but when it happens every.single.time. It gets a little annoying and repetitive. I’ve also noticed a lot of spell checks, along with inconsistency’s with facts about different characters around town. With this book though it angered me, to know end of angered me. With Jordan’s decisions and how not once had Tanner ever showed her he was like any other guy but yet she constantly pushed him away and refused to talk to him.(this is like 90% into the book by the way) and I just couldn’t stand it. Out of all the books of hers I’ve read it’s definitely my least favorite.

if one person in this whole series could talk in a complete sentence that would be amazing. ig this is the author’s older work but did no one speak check these books? also how do u get the nickname dani from jordan???? those are 2 different names. also what happened to the mom??? so many questions
This was definitely another Morgan Elizabeth book…listened to the audiobook version.
Another small (yet thick in the “right spots”) girl, another muscular and “well endowed” man who refers to a woman as being “mine” and needs to protect her.
I thought I was going to make it through this book without the woman “mewling” in the bedroom, but there it was with like 5 minutes left…
It was ok, nothing groundbreaking but easy enough to listen to, with likable enough characters. Would I read again - probably not, but worth it one time.
honestly this series gets better and better the further along we go. we have small town, found sibling, brothers friend and office romance.
I LOVED seeing Jordan and Tanners relationship bloom. I mean, he buys her a pink hard hat and new vest to wear on their site!! He was down bad for her (just like all the Springbrook Hills men are), but it was cute!
This book got me out of my reading slump after a few DNF books. I’m so glad I gave it a chance and finished it in one day!
Small town romance trope! I haven’t read one of these in a while because I got burned out on the Hallmark vibes, but this book reminded me why I have always loved romance books!
I didn’t read the first books in the series and I didn’t think I missed anything. Obviously there’s more background on the other couples in previous books, but there weren’t plot holes without reading the first two. More thoughts like, “hmm I bet this trait of the side character was expanded in the previous books”.
The spice was great and believable. MMC was what book bf dreams are made of! I absolutely loved the respect for the FMC that the MMC repeatedly shows her. He takes care of her even before the romance aspect just because he’s a good guy. Not the “the bar in on the floor so anything he does is good” type, but goes out of his way to listen and make her comfortable or life easier. Absolute butterflies!
Several characters had so much growth, when I finished the book I felt like a proud mama hen knowing her chicks were all okay. Haha The side plot just adds extra layers of everything coming together in a really beautiful way!
Three reasons for only four stars:
The pacing was awkward and time passing in the book was hard to follow. It could just be that I got distracted by daily life while reading and came back to the book at a weird point. However, there are beginning of chapters telling us that the next week was the same as the previous and then it seemed to jump back and explain the week. Also, I think this whole book took place in 6 weeks. We don’t really know how long before Jordan came to town so it seems a little rushed for her to have a new relationship.
*SPOILERS*
After reading the book, the first meeting of the MMC/FMC does not add up with what we know of her insecurities. I think the scene is funny and second hand embarrassment is real (in a good way!), but how the FMC carried herself in that scene just feels wrong once we get to know her more deeply.
Last, I hate the reason for the “break” before boys gets girl back. I understand that it was used because of the FMC’s past/triggers. However, it just doesn’t fit the MMC’s character. After everything he has done for her, I can’t see this actually happening. His actions pushed other characters to grow so I get it, but I definitely would’ve liked a different trope.
I'm really frustrated with this book. I was so looking forward to this story, and I feel like it had SO much potential, but it just fell flat.
*Potential spoilers ahead*
Tanner was such a fun sweet character in the other books I was really looking forward to him falling in love. He was great for most of this book, but the misunderstanding felt so forced to me. So out of character for no reason it pissed me off.
Jordan was a completely new entity. I loved the mix of confident and anxious, but sometimes I feel like the confident part was left to the side for no reason, or the anxious parts were forced. The misunderstanding at the end infuriated me because she flat out said she saw all of the things that proved Tanners innocents in the situation. She reverted for no reason that I could see.
Don't even talk to me about Autumn. I liked autumn in the other books even though she was a side character, she was fun. In this book I felt like her entire personality was just shredded. I understand being angry, or having misplaced anger and blame. But the way she acted was absolutely unacceptable. Especially after the situation with Jax happened in front of her. Even the "make up" they had didn't feel fully fleshed out.
The last thing I seriously couldn't stand about this book is it felt so horribly edited. So many of Jordan's stories were exactly the same thing she'd previously said to the same character. The timeline kept jumping around saying "two weeks have gone by" and then in the next chapter it was "three days later" or it had been 3 months since Jordan came to town, but it had only been 5 weeks. I also didn't fully understand the nickname "Dani." Her last name is Daniels, or the last part of her first name being Jordan? I didn't get it, and they never explained why it was such an important nickname for her.
I really really wanted to like this book. I was willing to look past some of the timeline errors. But the further along I got the more disappointed I was. I love Morgan Elizabeth's works, and this one had so much potential to be my favorite, but it was unfortunately my least favorite.

3.5⭐ likely my favorite of the series thus far, though I still maintain the weird cliffhanger ending of book 2, The Protector, should've just been part of the beginning of this book.
Pro: The storyline is really sweet. It follows two people who each have been beaten down by life, constantly made to feel second best, and desperately want to be first to someone. They have a natural chemistry that makes them easy to root for.
The author did a great job including her other characters without them over taking the story. She is slowly creating a bigger universe with each book.
Con: there were almost too many "villians". Her mom, both exes, his dad, her sister...
------ The timeline and detail inconsistencies remains a problem. One example (of many), it was mentioned Tanner was moving into his home next week. Then it was indicated 2 weeks had passed. Then it was mentioned he was moving in next week. Um, no. That shouldve already happened last week.
Another example, in book 2, Tony was both an officer and a detective, depending on the scene. In this book, Jordan was enrolling in both a masters program, then a bachelors, then a masters.
Grammatical and spelling errors are fixable. And would strengthen all her books. The author really needs a new editor.
Another easy read in the series and again, I like the ease of Morgan Elizabeth's writing and the characters and little world she's created in Springbrook Hills.
I love Tanner, I really liked what was shown of him in the other books and felt like he really deserved someone who was good and I'm glad he got it. I liked Jordan as well and how she craved normalcy and a home and wasn't what people originally perceived her to be. We definitely saw a different side to Autumn which I didn't like but I'm glad it was realistic and that she developed and changed her opinion as the book went on. And that this was cemented by the epilogue.
Wasn't keen on how many times the word substitution was mentioned, it became a little jarring once I noticed it. Also there was some odd, caveman like writing where the characters sounded like they were missing particular words when they were speaking but that could've been deliberate, who knows.
Overall though, I liked the characters and the story and how it played out. I liked that we got to see more of the characters and their lives and that every book seems to flesh the town and the people in it lives further to make them feel more real.
I really enjoyed the romance between Tanner and Jordan, even though I thought he'd end up with Sadie. I only thought that because they would go out together with Hunter and Hannah.
This book made me really annoyed with Autumn, I understand her initial distrust toward Jordan but I don't think it excuses her calling the paparazzi and revealing Jordan's location.
The fight between Jordan and Tanner was also a bit rushed and honestly unnecessary. I get that it's a necessary trope in this genre of books but it's so over done.

This one was not my favorite. He was doing the whole "I'm your man/your mine" act wayyyyy to early. It wasn't till after that they actually started having conversations about getting to know each other. the plot was interesting, I haven't read anything like it before. However, I've read the ocean view books from her and the first two spring book Hills books.... Its the same stuff in the books, you can tell it's the same author.
