this is another post-Mockingjay fanfic from AO3 (written from Katniss’s POV). this story was a lot more about Peeta and Katniss as parents, which was very heartwarming and made me very happy to see. i also loved the little details this author included about Katniss and Peeta’s relationship, like the nicknames they eventually made for each other and things like that.
however, this story was strictly about Katniss and Peeta and didn’t really include any information about post-war Panem like in Back to Twelve. which is fine but i did enjoy that about the other story. i also didn’t like how this story didn’t include anything about the memory book that Katniss and Peeta made. maybe i’m being too picky but i feel like that was a very important part of the end of Mockingjay, and also a big part of Katniss and Peeta growing back together in general. finally, i feel like the pace of this story was somewhat rushed. i always pictured Katniss and Peeta’s growing back together to be more of a slow burn thing due to the immense amount of trauma they both experienced, and this story had them hopping right back together very early on. Katniss also had children a lot earlier on than the epilogue in Mockingjay suggested. which is fine, i just found it to be very unlike Katniss to do that.
overall, this story did make me feel very warm and happy while reading it and i did enjoy it. i just think some details could’ve been adjusted a little bit to better fit what was hinted at at the end of Mockingjay.

Since the hunger games are having a renaissance and I have been in a reading slump- I decided to honor my teenage hood years with a hunger games fanfic. I’m glad I took that step towards Nirvana.
I could have read the original books but…
1) I re-read them in 2021 along with the Snow prequel.
2) I, truly, for the life of me cannot handle the pain those books inflict. It was bad when I was a love obsessed 11 year old. It was way worse when I was a life hardened 20 year old who understood those books were more than a love triangle. Prim’s death crushed me in ways it had not before. The same way that Peeta being hijacked affected me differently. Or Katniss’s catatonia.
3) I want to wait 10 years before I read them again. Maybe things will have changed, maybe It bring forth a new understanding of the world and myself.
I admit I have been team Peeta since I was 11 years old. Which is funny because back in the day I was all about the black haired bad boys, meaning Gale would have been right up in my alley.
(I didn’t like Gale before, now that PRIMREAPER can stay away from my eye balls. I remember Katniss trying to survive, being starved, watching a boy she cared for suffer unimaginable atrocities and he would be standing back, breathing down her neck with “do you love me yet?”).
And It goes beyond me thinking he is the best guy for Katniss. He is the best character/ boy/ man, end of story.
In my list of book boyfriends he gets top 20 (after the beautiful tie that is Mr. Darcy and the one true king Aragorn). But that is how good of a person/ character he really is. I enjoyed that this fanfiction was able to encapsulate Katniss and Peeta, not brushing out their history or healing in favor of a “fixing the ending by ignoring what they went through” formula. The author gave me healing and pain in one dosage, which by reading an Everlark fanfic, it was exactly what I wanted.

I added this on here because I wanted it on here and no one had done it yet! this is hands down the best hunger games fic I have read so PLEASE READ IT!!!!
I don't usually include fanfiction on my Goodreads, largely because most fanfics aren't on here but also because I don't read many as long as this. It took me a solid week to finish but it was worth it.
The writer captures Katniss and Peeta really well and I found their story post-war very believable. I had some minor qualms but nothing that took away from my enjoyment of reading their life together.
I didn't love how Gale was represented. While I don't like him with Katniss, I do think he's a complicated character who has as many positive traits as negative ones, but I can understand why a lot of HG fans hate him.
The only other downside for me was that, due to it being very long, I lost interest towards the end. Once I knew that Katniss and Peeta had parenthood and their love life figured out, I suppose there wasn't much left but more fluff, spice and drama. That said, it was written well and some parts were very emotional.
Overall, for a fanfiction piece I think this is amazing. It's not that I think fanfiction is necessarily lower quality, as some fanfics are great, but to write a story this well over the span of 12 months for no monetary profit is impressive. It's a love letter to our favourite fictional couple, so how can I not love it?
OH. MY. GOD. THIS. this is THE everlark fanfic. massive ty to tiktok for recommending this to me. Y’ALL. this was beautiful. it provides all of the closure needed and then some. it is so loyal to the source material, you would think miss collins wrote this herself. To melissaeverdeen13, i hope you get everything you want in life. I hope every room you walk into is always the perfect temperature and i hope that any random object that you have ever lost/will ever lose magically finds its way back to you. no exaggeration when i say that this is HANDS DOWN one of the best fan fictions i have ever read. fav quote: “You’re the realest thing I’ve ever had.”
