Award-winning investigative journalist Karyn Maughan and former National Treasury insider Kirsten Pearson reveal the inside story behind South Africa's controversial nuclear deal. Through insider accounts, audio recordings and confidential minutes, the authors piece together the Zuma administration's secret dealings with Russia and how it went to extraordinary and dark lengths to conclude the nuke before Zuma's time ran out.
This book gave me insights into how JZ tried to push through the nuclear power deal with Russia. It shows how JZ has a pathological distrust of the West. Even though SA uses French atomic technology and has experience using such technology, Zuma's desire to kowtow to Putin was part of his reason to try and get this "nuclear agreement" signed. For Zuma, it is all about the East and BRICS. He tried to use secrecy and bullying to get this through, and if it wasn't for our strong NGOs - it might've rocked our financial system. I have a new appreciation for those that stood up to his onslaught from the RET faction. Tina Joemat-Peterson, controversially remembered not for her faults but for licking a teacup, comes across as one of those that stood in the way. It reveals how the claimed "innocent" party, Engineer Koko, was retained to try and push to move the nuclear power deal away from the Energy Dept and to Eskom.
Good book that covers Zuma's obsession with an estimated Trillion Rand nuclear deal with Russia that did not follow the required procedures for approval.
