This is perhaps the most personality and backstory we have ever gotten on Destiny. Sure, we have known the broad strokes for years. Married Mystique before gay marriage was legal, adopted Rogue, has precognition, worked with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, wrote a bunch of diaries. Check.
I am particularly pleased that this issue talked about what it must have been like for her, many decades in the past, to grow up as a gay woman. She described for us how she knew there were possible futures in which she could have been closeted in relationships with men, but she rejected all of those in favor of a future with her one great love, Mystique. That was romantic. And relatable, at least for a queer audience.
The plot also advanced, letting us know that Destiny is now aware of what Sinister has been up to. The rest of the Quiet Council is now aware of the shenanigans Mystique undertook to bring about resurrecting Destiny.
As I'm not as big a Marvel collector as I am a DC collector I continue to be a bit out of the loop on Immortal X-men.
I just don't quite know what is going on but am interested in finding out, some where between a 3 and 4 star rating. This series feels like its more for the initiated reader, not so much for new readers.
From the subterfuge, fhe retconned history, the thought bubbles and the quotes... Gillen made Raven Darkholme such a dynamic anti-hero/villain and Destiny so profound this is a GREAR READ!
Damn that was a page turner. Just read it everyone. You won’t be disappointed. It has everything…. But action. But it’s ok because the drama and intrigue more than made up for it.
