What if all the heroes died? Malthus Kierin always dreamed of adventuring, of making his mark upon the world of Kalan. After he earns his robe and staff, rewards for passing the tests required to become a wizard, the door to his dreams stands open. But a nightmare awaits him on the other side, a black-hearted wizard who, along with his vile undead minions, systematically assassinates all of Kalan's heroes. The tale of Malthus and his small band of companions begins, as they flee from the Darkener on a seemingly hopeless quest for aid. Who now will become heroes? Or will Kalan fall to an age of darkness?
Not generally a reader of this genre in the past, but certainly glad I decided to give this a try. Author Herbst has characters that will keep your attention through their madness & quirkiness, and even have you laughing in between.
Cheers Mr. Herbst! I’m eagerly on to ”The Stone of Zoral” and look forward to finishing your trilogy with “War of the Merranai”!
I almost put this book down due to all of the references to the same worlds as Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings. But the characters were interesting enough for me to continue. And I was sure glad i did. The book was easy to read and just kept getting better as the pages were turned. Definitely recommended for fans of the HP/LOTR genre.
I couldn't manage getting past about fifty pages. Poorly written, poorly edited. Clearly "inspired" from Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, but without a character to care about. At fifty pages in I still had no idea what the book was to be about. Really pissed that I spent money on this.
