"Families are complicated". How do you write about that and make it a page turner? Easy when you're Sarah Bacaller.
Gab (Gabrielle) lives in a granny flat on a Tony's bush property with her mum and kid brother.
Her mum gives spirituality a bad name and I wanted to slap her at one stage, then I felt sorry for her. She has personality problems and it's Gab who has to look up the pieces. Jack, the kid brother who she takes total responsibility for is like every kid brother, angelic one minute, exasperating the next. Gab's friends are vacuous and annoying.
Everyone is passive, passive aggressive, or aggressive. So far. Tony is her only hope. Him and her maths teacher Mr Cheng. How important a rescuer is in the lives of so many young people.
There are reasons for all this, for her mother's relentless neglect. But her mother's personality issues only add to an intolerable situation.
How is she going to escape?
Oh no! A baby! Why did I not see that coming. Now we find out who is really on Gab's side. Will she go to university or not? Will she have the baby? What about the father? Will he turn out to be a hero or a swine? I hated him but why would be a spoiler.
I loved the characters in She Tenacity. They will have you cheering or booing. Gab is definitely a hero and yes, she does have tenacity. My only criticism is I could have read more of Gab's story. Maybe a sequel?
This is a wonderful read for young adult to older adult. Sarah Bacaller is a fine writer. I'm looking forward to reading more of her work.
Sarah had generously donated 50% of book sales of She Tenacity to 'The Babes Project' an organisation that empowers and supports woman through pregnancy and early parenting.

I feel really sorry for Gab in this story; she doesn’t have a childhood. She lives in a small granny flat with her mother, and kid brother, acting as a parent to both of them.
Gabs mother has serious issues. While I can see where her problems stem from, I can’t forgive her for making Gab’s life miserable.
Gab is a good kid. She’d rather stay home studying than go out partying, but she has strong-minded friends who use peer pressure like a weapon, and as a result, her life is about to change for good!
In fact, it seems like poor Gab is never getting a childhood. She’s about to be burdened with a lot more responsibility.
This is a really moving book, filled with lots of raw emotions and life lessons.

Some books have titles that sound cool just for the sake of it, but this book really embodies its title. Gab's story is one of determination, heartache, and tenacity. Starting while Gab is still at school, we get a glimpse into her family life which is well written and has just the right amount of information to let us know what she's dealing with. Sarah Bacaller writes the kind of tension that comes with living in a household like Gabs' with beautiful, startling clarity.
As the story progressed, I loved how real it felt. The struggles Gab went through felt authentic, and ensures that readers feel like they are engrossed in something that feels more like a biography than fiction. I was constantly in awe of both Gab's ability to push forward despite the challenges, and Sarah Bacaller's smooth writing style.

I loved this story so much. Gab is such an endearing and inspiring character. It was so easy to be sucked into her world, rooting for her from the sidelines. Wonderful writing from a talented author. Highly recommend.
