It's Kisaragi's first year in the specialized art and design department at her high school. The timid Kisaragi has a lot to learn, but with the help of a very unique group of friends, even the most difficult lesson becomes loads of fun - if not downright silly! With the aid of full-color pages throughout, you too can learn the basics of color theory and become a great artist yourself! Satoko Kiyuduki, creator of Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro , melds art class and manga in a whole new way!
Painfully hectic and saccharine. I was hoping for something that discussed design seriously, the way Oishinbo discusses cuisine, but this is nothing like that. Insofar as there are actual art tips they are things like how to add glitter to things.
Actual rating: 3.5 stars. This review is for the entire series (7 volumes). This was a very cute slice-of-life manga that told me more than I ever wanted to know about art and the creation thereof. The author really seemed to know her art stuff. Each character was unique and fun to read, having great chemistry with the others. The hijinks that ensued were incredibly entertaining. I heartily recommend this series for anyone who wants a relaxing and enjoyable read.
I gave this a second star because some of the art (especially the color pages) was excellent. The story was nearly impossible to follow and the translation notes were rarely helpful.
The only other volume I have from this series is volume 6; let's hope it's better.
A group of girls are enrolled in art school. The book serves as a very entertaining, yet informative look into the world of art, it's rules, and the many styles it comes in.
I don't think I will ever be a huge fan of 4-koma (I prefer the pacing of longer chapters), but this was fairly amusing. It is packed with cultural references; those who don't have some background from other reading / experience may find it tiresome to be constantly flipping to the pages of cultural notes. On the other hand, at least Yen Press provided said pages of cultural notes!
I really really liked this manga. The art is fantastic, the characters are fun, and not to mention the amount of actual art knowledge that it teaches you. I feel like this manga doesn't get the popularity it deserves, and that the anime version horribly messed up the beautiful artwork displayed in the manga.
A 4-koma manga about art school students. The characters do more things related to art school than Hidamari Sketch, and even has side panels explaining art terms
