Tiger of Drass: Capt. Anuj Nayyar, 23, Kargil Hero

Rate this book
In May 1999, the Kargil insurgency was still being viewed as a routine affair. No one quite understood the magnitude of the situation. However, it soon emerged that infiltrators had captured high-altitude posts vacated by Indian soldiers during the winter months and thus had a tactical upper hand, while the Indian Army struggled with intelligence.

For the next month or so, Capt. Anuj Nayyar and the men of 17 Jat went on various reconnaissance missions in the boulder-strewn Drass sector where enemy troops had set up base. They fought relentlessly in a gruesome battle for two nights in July, before securing the peak that was critical to the success of Operation Vijay and India's victory in Kargil. Amid heavy artillery and mortar fire, they destroyed four enemy bunkers and neutralized tens of infiltrators in close combat. During the attack on the fourth bunker, the twenty-three-year-old captain was hit by an enemy rocket-propelled grenade, dying instantly but saving the lives of fifteen men in the process, who eventually finished the mission and hoisted the Indian flag on the peak.

For motivating his command by personal example and going beyond the call of duty, Capt. Anuj Nayyar was awarded India's second-highest gallantry award, the Maha Vir Chakra, in 2000.

23 then, now and forever. This project is a heart-wrenching eulogy from a mother who lost her brave-heart to the ravages of war. A catharsis in the form of a biography, it captures the essence of Captain Anuj Nayyar, 23, Maha Vir Chakra from a strapping young lad to the meticulous, ethical and steadfast soldier that played a pivotal role in bringing an enemy nation to its knees. The book may appear slim but the weight of the words printed on its pages is as dense as blood-soaked parchment that describes a personality that can only be matched by Dharmaraja Yudhishtra.

The book starts highlighting Capt. Anuj’s upstanding morals from a very young age. Saintly in his speech but a go-getter in his deeds, he instilled in others what he saw in himself – an unstoppable, unforgiving force with the grace of an air-borne feather. Self motivated from before the starting line, it was his life’s mission to keep pushing his personal boundaries – which was a mighty task since unbeknownst to him, he was carrying the burden of his entire squadron and then some. While I can personally attest to my lackadaisical constitution as homework dragged along while coddling my video-gaming system, its unnerving to see Capt. Anuj’s bullheadedness to make officer by the age of 21 simply in order to serve for a longer time and gain exposure as soon as possible. Instead of succumbing to peer pressure and taking responsibilities for granted, he pulled others up to his wavelength and brought out the best in them, thus earning respect and life-long camaraderie with those who he worked as prominently seen in him leading the Naushera Company at the IMA drills. The word ‘rest’ never came into picture, not even when he was admitted for jaundice while serving in the 17th Battalion of he Jat regiment. Undoubtedly rash, but gives a binocular vision of his grit and doggedness for victory. He had no external competition for he was his own worst enemy...till martyrdom separated him from himself and Timmie, his bride-to-be.

Chapter 4:

I have yet to face an opponent who can win from [sic] me. I want posting in Kashmir because I want to kill them for killing so many
innocent Indians.

–Capt. Anuj Nayyar, MVC

This chapter pushes the reader to the brink of suspense, fear, sadness and pride – one can only imagine the kind of high Capt. Anuj may have been experiencing. I cannot do a better job than the author and mother in relating the events that led to his martyrdom and the successive victory. If it all you read one chapter from the book, it should be Chapter 4, once, twice and as many times as it takes to understand Capt. Anuj as an individual.

The loss that he feels is your loss, his determination is yours. Lucid, descriptive and engaging while retaining all the technicality, the author describes the event that may have won the war but emptied our souls.

I felt it necessary to add key excerpts from the Chapter:

He embodied the best that a soldier can be. Anuj was the Jat battalion and every Jat was him.

He ended the call by asking Timmie to think of honeymoon destinations. It seemed Anuj was also gearing up for marriage but only after sending the insurgents to their right place – ‘not back to their holes but straight to hell’

He kept a watch and a leather wallet on Col. Bawa’s table and said, ‘Sir, in case I do not come back, please have these returned to my family.’

At 0718 hours on 8 July, the Indian national flag was hoisted at the Pimple Complex by the Indian armed forces, 79 Infantry Brigade and 17 Jat Battalion. Capt. Anuj Nayyar may not have been there that morning but he was present in the victorious soldiers who basked in his glory.

[Prof. Nayyar] ‘Yaar, Anuj, iss mein ek bhi Nayyar nahin hain?

‘I’m going to live very long, there’s no bullet in Pakistan that could do me any harm today.

...and thus he did.

The Aftermath:

Capt. Anuj Nayyar was not just a soldier who had died on the battlefield. He was the embodiment of the Indian people. Anuj was only twenty-three years old; the men and women, the soldiers and officers in the procession had sons older than him while some of them were themselves the same age. By the time the army truck reached the crematorium, thousands had gathered behind it.

In the end of the day, the price paid by young souls are the result of laziness, incompetency and bureaucratic arrogance on the part of the government. It may not be appropriate to tarnish the will of Capt. Anuj to serve the country, but once the due respects have been paid, the bullets must be replaced by fiery questions.

The resilience shown by the family in the face of existential crisis and political entanglements was commendable but depressing. Prof. Nayyar made it a point to stand up tall and accept the accolades on Captain Anuj’s behalf. The Kargil Heights Filling Station was in full effect – except the family had to battle a war on their own against corrupt officials and red-tapism. It was only after a direct confrontation with the government that the filling station was given the utilities it required to work in addition to launching an investigation into the acts of the barbarians who call themselves officials.

Capt. Anuj lived more than what the average human ever will. He climbed to the top not only professionally but on a ideological level which is exactly why he is a Legend among his peers, a source of inspiration for the next generation and a Hero to the general population. He lived life on his terms, striving for perfection but not waiting for it.

‘Amar rahe … amar rahe … Anuj Nayyar amar rahe.’

A Poem From Prof. Nayyar to his Son:

My son, the Tiger of Drass,
You live in our heart,
Your smile is as fresh as ever.
Your saga of valour and fearless determination
Shall be remembered for ever
In the hearts of the Jats and history of the army.
You are a beacon of inspiration.
You taught us how to love and
How to remember.
Remember we will what you gave us,
Remember we will the loss,
The years to be spent together and
The years your brother missed.
Remember we will
The profound grief and pride, and
The history you made
For the coming generations.

My third book from indicabooks, is less of a book and more of a goosebumps inducing thrilling journey that will put you through a fair share of trauma and pride once you reach the last page. Throughout this journey I was almost under a trance. I don't need we even need a blurb to introduce this book as the title does a good enough job for that. Still, here goes...

Blurb:
In May 1999, the Kargil insurgency was still being viewed as a routine affair. No one quite understood the magnitude of the situation. However, it soon emerged that infiltrators had captured high-altitude posts vacated by Indian soldiers during the winter months and thus had a tactical upper hand, while the Indian Army struggled with intelligence.

Review:

As you may guess from the title itself, this book tells you a real life tale. To be precise it tells you one of those stories that can restore your faith that heroes are born in real life too. Chivalrous heroic youths are not only characters of stories. Sometimes stories are to be told on their achievements. Life of Captain Anuj is bound to ignite a flame of patriotism, courage and strength in the hearts of young and old. The sheer durability his family showed by bearing this heavy burden of grief with absolute grace. Losing a child or a brother is always painful beyond measure. I can't imagine what it must be like loosing a son or brother like him, such a brave, noble and tough soul whose passing however heroic it may sound, can break the heart of a nation. This book does not need a recommendation. A must read for any Indian.

book was perfectly written. It showed how every small event in the life of MVC Capt. Anuj Nayyar culminated into making him into the immortal he is. It showed how proper support and nurturing of parents can make boys into men into officers and into immortal warriors. Every episode is succinct and clear. It is easy to imagine and visualize the Valorous war waged by Capt. Anuj Nayyar and his team, without whom India wouldn’t be enjoying the freedom it’s enjoying today. The discipline and dedication shown by Capt. Anuj Nayyar towards his work and country is one of the many reasons why this book is a must read by every child in the nation. Integrity, dedication, discipline and honor are what make upright citizens for a nation and Capt. Anuj Nayyar is such a bright shining example for every Indian. Jai Hind. Jat Balwan Jai Bhagavan. Capt. Anuj Nayyar Amar Rahe.

What a book written by a Mother. No way to express feelings towards the Nayyar family. Thanks for giving us the Anuj Nayyar story.
The book started with letters from Officers telling the bravery, grit and determination of Anuj Nayyar followed by his childhood stories, teenage stories and finally selection to NDA.
Each and every turn of Anuj's life is impeccably written and told and when reading it seems like watching a film.

The Kargil war coverage and Anuj priorities towards country and family is well highlighted and emotions captured beautifully.

A flawless book written by a mother in rememberance of his beloved Martyr Son.

A book must read by children and parents must encourage their children to read this book to get first hand knowledge of bravery, intelligence and hardwork of a real life hero.

Thanks mam for the book.

“Captain Anuj Nayyar’s was a life of transformation, from the lanes of Janakpuri to the corridors of Chetwode Hall, IMA, and the bunk beds of Naushera Company to the ranks of the Jat Regiment, a life of code and honour, of friendship and family, ambition and loyalty, rules and patriotism, josh and resilience, a life of izzat and a life of sacrifice – and he had been delivered to the eternal flame of martyrs, the Amar Jawan Jyoti.”

A beautiful book written by a mother, Meena Nayyar whose son became immortal while serving the nation.
It’s the story of a young Anuj and his transformation to become MVC Capt. Anuj Nayyar, The Tiger of Drass.
The book is written in a very colloquial manner. It gives an insight into how the armed forces turn men out of boys and leaders out of officers. The book gives an understanding of the life of Capt. Anuj Nayyar, his passion towards the army and his dedication towards the country. It also gives an overview of the gruesome war of Kargil and the sacrifices we as a nation paid for it.
Capt. Anuj Nayyar was fearless. Few lines from the book that is all worth ;

Yaar, Anuj, iss mein ek bhi Nayyar nahin hain?

I am not irresponsible that I will die without fulfilling my duties for the country. I want posting in Siachen so that I can test my physical and mental endurance. I want to see how tough I really am.

He kept a watch and a leather wallet on Col. Bawa’s table, “Sir, in case I do not come back, please have these returned to my family”.

I’m going to live very long, there’s no bullet in Pakistan that could do any harm today.

Sir, three down, one to go. Don’t you worry, sir, I’ll have that peak for you in just some time….
There are so many more.

I suggest everyone read this book for once. If you're a defence aspirant it will definitely ignite the fire in you and even if you are not it will do the same. It will fill you with pride and a sense of responsibility towards the nation. You will learn about the sacrifices of our Heroes.
The life of Capt. Anuj Nayyar will teach you a lot. The patience, the endurance, the dedication, the never giving up attitude, the discipline, and a lot more. You will learn the values he shared in his lifetime in every turn of the page.
It is not just a book but a pack of emotions, pride, courage, strength and sacrifice of all those men who lived and immortalized and men who are serving and standing like a mountain.

I received this book from Indica Books as a part of their #1000ReviewersClub. This book tells us the life story of Capt. Anuj Nayyar, MVC and his journey from right from his school days to the day he immortalized himself at Kargil. The authors, one of whom is Capt. Nayyar's mother have also written about their lives after his death, how they lived with the loss, and finally what prompted them to write down about him so many years after his passing away.

Capt. Nayyar passed away at the very young age of 23, the age when most of us are in college or just starting our first jobs. But in that same amount of time this man managed to pass school, NDA, IMA, all the multiple trainings, won accolades in sports, reached Kargil and planted the tricolour there while saving the lives of almost 15 men from his team. His achievements are awe inspiring more so because he accomplished all this in mere 20 years! While reading the book you get an insight into his thoughts through his many letters and you see what a gentleman the officer was. You see his gentler side when you read his letters to Mani or when he talks of Karan or Timmie. The winning spirit, the determination is apparent from his early life. His hard work in any area of his choosing, be it volleyball or running or the military later are more inspiring than most books or influencer videos. And all this while taking the team along, never leaving anyone behind is what makes him a leader! Tears well up while reading this book quite frequently, not just towards the end but even during his happy times because we already know how all this ends. Such books are hence always extremely difficult to read. They leave you numb, they make you feel helpless. But every Indian must overcome this weakness and read such books to understand freedom isn't free! Someone somewhere has already paid a heavy price for it. This book must be read by youngsters for not only will it give them real 'heroes' to look up to but also demonstrate what courage, discipline and hard work can achieve.

Shat Shat Naman to this brave soldier and his family!

Tiger of Drass

Written by Meena Nayyar and Himmat Singh Shekhawat

Thanks to Indica Books for sending this book about our modern day hero Capt Anu Nayyar.

Am I, a mere commoner worthy enough to review a book about Captain who gave his life for his countrymen. The answer is NO. But I will still try to put my thoughts about the book.

In general, we Indians don't’ get to read not much about our heroes. We are lucky that in the recent past we are getting to read and learn about our heroes through books like this.

This book, written by Anuj’s mother, gives it a special touch. A touch that can only be brought by near and dear ones.

It gives the reader the account of Anuj’s life right from school days unto days where he neutralized tens of infiltrators in close combat and where he finally gave his life and in course saved lives of fifteen men.

The book is filled with letters from his colleagues, colonel’s and generals thereby giving an account of the immense value he added to the Indian armed forces. It inspires the reader to do their bit for their country. It is not what the country has done for you, it is what you have done for the country philosophy that one learns from the book.

Then you get a detailed account of his life in NDA/IMA, the leadership he showed across. The camaraderie that he had with his team, soldiers, and higher ups were exemplary. His smiling face at all times, never say die attitude, taking things in the right spirit all are lessons to follow to the reader.

The detailed account of Operation Vijay takes the reader through what the soldiers must have gone through. The tension that they must have felt, the immense responsibility that he would have felt on his young shoulder is unimaginable. To take that up and doing what he did for the country is awe inspiring.

What I found special and that brought many tears is his personal letters that the writers attached at the end of the book. Those were special. And to share them with the reader must have been a tough decision. I thank the writers for publishing them.

And the photographs, such a pleasure to see them and imagine what Captain’s life would have been. Photos from a young Anuj upto his final steps gives the reader a whirlwind tour of his life.

Finally the writers give an account to the other Kargil war heroes, who one might not have heard about. These accounts further solidify the philosophy that one should have - be worthy of a soldier’s life.

There are many books written on the Kargil War and Kargil War Heroes. But a book brought together by a Kargil War Hero’s mother is rare. Many of us were kids when the Kargil War happened, and we don’t hold a memory of the situation in the country. Being an avid reader, I read books on the war and learned about Armed Forces. I haven’t had anyone from my family who has been on the borders. Reading a book about Captain Anuj Nayyar brings back the war scenario live. I believe that books written on legends don’t need a reviewer. These books on ‘Kargil War’ are masterpieces for generations to come. This book would bring smiles, tears, and sorrow together to every reader. No one can imagine the plight of a Martyr’s family.

‘The Beginning’ describes the Nayyar household, which is cute – ‘Ghar Meena ka’. ‘Mani is always right’ All three male members of this Janakpuri household followed this like gospel.

As the chapters run by, there is an aspiring young man turning into a soldier. The book has letters, excerpts, and real-time reactions inked. I have read a couple of books on the Kargil War, yet I feel angry about how the soldiers were treated. I couldn’t hold my tears while I read about Capt. Anuj Nayyar’s last journey. A loss that felt so personal. A 23-year-old Captain was martyred to protect the pride and honor of the country. A family lost their son and a woman lost her partner for us, for our future. The letters and testimonials left me numb. In these pages, you would see soldiers teary-eyed for their comrades fighting an unconventional war. The next war was of course fighting within for their loss. ‘The Second War’ brought the struggle of Nayyar’s family fighting the memories, mourning their loss, and troubles the government brought. I believe that no one ever stops grieving the loss of their loved one, we learn to live with it buried in the corner of our hearts. It’s a matter of coincidence that I finished reading this book, a day prior when Capt. Anuj Nayyar attained martyrdom. I would like to recommend this book to every Indian and not just the reading community. ‘Know your Heroes’

“I told him to go deep into their hearts and minds so that no other Indian soldier dies for their cowardly attacks from hidden positions.” ~Brig. Bawa

“I’m not that irresponsible to come home without a fight. I am not that person who would come back without winning this war, it’s not what you’ve taught me” ~ Capt. Anuj Nayyar (MVC)

A great insight into the leader and hero that was Capt. Anuj Nayyar sir. At such a young age, he was there fighting for India at the cold heights of Kargil. From reading the book, the reader can feel that from the day he was born, Capt. Anuj was made for something special. He's the one who inspires us, and especially for defense aspirants, he's more than just a hero to us. We're thankful to his mother, father, brother, and all the people who came out and helped in the release of this book.

How many of us can really think of sacrificing their lives for the people of their country. Anuj Nayyar was one of them who did it for us. His mother's tribute to her son in the form of this book is an excellent read for those who wish to dive deeper into his life and the extremely upright person that he was. I loved each part of the book written in such a beautiful manner and I admire the courage that it took for a mother to go back to those times in order to write this book. Every responsible Indian must read this.
A hero in every sense.

JiReceived this book from Indica around a month ago and started reading this on Kargil Vijay Divas with an intention to finish this by Independence day and post review on August 15th. But finished reading it in one go and posting the review within one day. Unfortunately, Bollywood has turned the stories of our heroes into romantic tales. This book although talks about Timmie, the major part of the book is about the human being Captain Anuj Nayyar was. There are a million reasons to buy this book, foremost among them is that the royalties from the book goes to the families of fallen heroes.

The book is a tribute of a mother to her son. It is a real sneak-peak into the life of a Fauji. It talks about the cadet life adventures of the captain, the life at NDA and IMA, the leadership qualities of Capt. Anuj Nayyar. It also talks about the hardships his family had to go through after his martyrdom owing to corruption. The mother goes down the storyline of the youngest Mahavir Chakra recipient from his birth to martyrdom and aftermath.

This is not a book that describes just a war and related stuffs. It shows how qualities get imbibed in a soldier. The adventures of captain Nayyar as young officer and hardships of life in warzone gives goosebumps. The pages that describe his martyrdom and aftermath brings tears.

It's a practical manual on how to bring up a child with high human values. His life and death will inspire young children. Every aspect of Captain Anuj Nayyar is an inspiration. His passion for fitness, challenging himself in running, putting his team in boxing, winning silver for his company, making innumerable friends, destroying three out of four bunkers of the enemies and finally taking a grenade on himself to save his team in Kargil. He lived an entire lifetime in 23 years. This is one of the best books you can gift to your child.

The letters and testimonials in the annexure can melt even a stony heart. Some people live forever.

Thank you Indic Academy for this book.

Who am I even to review this stunning piece of sacrifice, courage and patriotism. I came across Mahaveer Chakra Capt. Anuj Nayyar in one of author Rachna Bisht's books on Kargil. I was heartbroken and devastated to know how a 23-year old gave his life for the country he truly loved. Though there were many other such stories of valour in that particular book, Capt. Anuj's life story broke me to the core. Hence, I decided to read this biography written by his mother.

This book takes us through the life and strife of a young Anuj who dreamt of nothing but serving his beloved country. It gives us deep insights about his training in the initial days, the NDA, the military academy but most importantly the love for his family. I was both inspired and heartbroken as to how a young lad even had that drive to serve his nation. How a fun loving boy even had that courage to face the enemy when he hadn't even entered the battlefield yet? I was left astounded with his zeal, zest, determination and above all his unconditional love for the country.

This book will touch you. Hold you at worst parts. Caress you with love and above all will leave you with insurmountable respect for Capt. Anuj and the Indian Army. Jai Hind 🇮🇳

The story of Captain Anuj Nayyar is truly inspiring. Seldom does one come across a young mind with so much clarity of thought , maturity in action & truly dedicated to his family, friends, duty. To state that only a mother (who is also the co-author) could have poured her emotions into every word is an understatement. The detailed account of the Kargil insurgency , lack of intelligence gathering , our enemies unethical ways of attack is an eye opener. Its a book which every parent, child , youngsters must read and take pride that Bharat is endowed with sons like Anuj who will go all out to protect our motherland.
Finally kudos to Rashtriya Riders who have taken this noble cause of reaching out to all martyr families & reenforcing their stories so that we civilians can appreciate the undying spirit of our army fellowmen

A brilliant insight into the mind of a 23-year-old soldier. I was in awe of how clear-headed the Captain was at an age when typically you are confused about life and where it is taking you.
Anuj's sense of duty towards his country and family is brilliantly captured and a shock to some of us who have forgotten.
I have never come across a young person with so much clarity of thought and action.

A book of valour , strength , sacrifice and love for nation , one's family and friends. Book that will leave one's mind blown by the way a person can also think and behave. The way the soldiers think and are ever-ready to sacrifice themselves for their nation ,keeping everything secondary with respect to nation's pride and their duty towards the nation.
