A haunted house, a jumpy heroine (rightfully so), and a cross-dressing hero… sounds like an interesting read, right?
This is definitely the case with 'One Summer.' My first book by author, JC Doan depicts the tale of Mia, a nurse who has had more than her fair share of troubles in life. After the death of her mother, she became sole custodian of her sister at an age when most young people are out partying. When her estranged aunt leaves her an old house, she sees it as a way to improve their lives- albeit reluctantly. The house holds many bad memories from her childhood; enough that she avoided it for many years afterward. Soon after moving in, she meets Jamie, her neighbor who has some very strange habits. What follows is a story of what happens when someone moves into a haunted house.
I really liked the overall plot of this book. It is quite different in many ways from the typical mystery, with some very spooky moments that had me jumping at times. I also liked the two main protagonists, though Jamie is definitely not your regular alpha-male hero. I appreciated that we got some of their background stories, so we saw what shaped them into the characters we meet.
Alternately, my biggest gripe with this novel has to be the abrupt conclusion. After the major build-up towards the ending, it all came to a head so quickly, that I felt like I got whiplash at the suddenness of it all. I really wish that it had been fleshed out a bit more.
I recommend this to persons who love a little horror in their books, as it makes for a difference from the regular thriller. There were some mild descriptions of erotic acts and no major profanity, so this is suitable for those as young as eighteen. Trigger warnings include: violence toward young girls and graphic accounts of violence. Overall, a pretty good read, and I will certainly be checking out more work from JC Doan!
*A great many thanks to BookSirens and JC Doan for this ARC. It is important to note that I was under no commitment to provide a positive review, and all opinions are undoubtedly my own.*
