It is what it is. It's a young adult romance book. So take it what it is, it's nothing too original or groundbreaking, but it's freaking cute and I enjoyed it!
I watched the movie (Our Secret Diary) and enjoyed it well enough. I thought I would give the book a go. I read this in Japanese as an intermediate learner and it is very approachable.
I love that the main character is into death metal. Haha. I can't help but compare it to the movie, and this of course allows the reader to explore the inner workings, thoughts and feelings of the main character to a deeper degree. Thus, we get to understand her insecurities much better, her thought process much better, and see how she grows and changes over the course of the book.
I also like that we get to see the ML as more of a person in this, he too has flaws but we get to understand him beyond a surface level as well.
It made me squee, it made me cry, I was approaching the end of the novel in public and was beyond conscious over how much I was grinning reading it haha. As I said, it is part of a well worn High School romance genre which I often feel way too old reading, but this one was perfect for what it was. So I'll give it it's 5 stars.
I had watched the movie, so I knew where I was getting into: timid and insecure high school girl finds a declaration of love in her desk by the coolest guy in her high school and they start exchanging messages through a notebook, even after she finds out (no spoiler, it happens pretty soon in the story) that he is not interested in her but her friend. It is all pretty vanilla, but it also kind of charming.
The worst: that tendency in Japanese light novels of having the main male character telling the female how she should behave
