Henry Allen "Harry" Ironside (October 14, 1876-January 15, 1951) was a Canadian-American Bible teacher, preacher, theologian, pastor, and author.
Ironside was one of the most prolific Christian writers of the 20th Century and published more than eighty books and pamphlets, many of which are still in print. As an editorial reviewer wrote of a 2005 republication, "Ironside's commentaries are a standard and have stood the test of time."
This is another in the "Ironside Collection" put out by Loizeaux Brothers. Anyone familiar with Ironside will know that he was a proponent of the dispensational interpretation of the Bible. If you glance at the publication date, you will see that this book was originally published in 1920 and was based on lectures given in 1919, in other words, on the heels of the war to end all wars. I was curious to see how often the Great War would crop up in these lectures. While you will find a few passing references, Ironside never falls into the trap on interpreting the Bible in light of the newspaper. It is sane, one might even say, timeless exposition of one of the most difficult books in the Bible. As a pastor I preached many sermons from Revelation and that meant that I have a growing familiarity with the commentaries on it. I have to say that I learned much from this book. While I bought the Ironside set back in 1984, through the years I would only pull this book off the shelf when I was working on a particular passage. This time I read it from beginning to end. It was well worth the investment of the time.
I liked the clear understanding that was put forth of scripture to bring to life the seriousness of understanding the full knowledge of the Holiness of the Living God.
Studying the book of Revelation was the best study I have done. This book was absolutely the best study tool. Powerful. This is one I will go over again. This is not a book you can just breeze through. It is a lot of clarity and understanding to take it.
So glad I decided to read my grandmother's book. I think if he were to update it today, there would be changes, but the core is well-explained and outlined. Educational and inspiring.
