This is the fast-paced sequel of "Scorched." A fantasy-romance with a heart pounding love triangle between Kyra, Jadox and Isaac. Read all about why she is the Golden One, what the Link means, and the land of Lodesa, full of Mystiers possessing Magik of one of the four elements, fire, earth, air, and water.
I prefered this book than the first one. The story evolves faster and the characters have so much more consistency. Kaya has so much to deal with on the emotional side! I feel for her... but at the same time, the mysteries of this world are more and more interesting so I can't wait to read the 3rd book soon!
This story continues to blow my mind! I’m am so in love with the characters. I hated Isaac in the first book and I really wanted to continue hating him, but this book makes it impossible. He is so charming and sexy! I loved learning more about him, it’s really hard to not love him! I can’t wait to find out what happens to Kyra, Jay and Isaac. I’m team Jay all the way! 😜 Loved the book from start to finish and could not put it down. I also really loved the new characters and our introduction to the underwater world.
Overall a fantastic romantasy read and I highly recommend it.
TLDR - the characters were a mess but I was still here for it -
As we know I’m fairly harsh on ARCs but somehow even with this books faults I enjoyed to hate those things. The characters were a mess (I could not predict what they’d do because it felt more up the writers whim than the characters), the dialog was cheesy, and sometimes it felt like a soap opera dice was rolled. With all of that, and my consistent “what the hell?”s about it all I still loved this book. Would I say it’s a literary masterpiece? No. Did I enjoy it a lot eventhough it was not even close to as good as the first book? Yes.
So the plot in this luckily is the most straight forward thing. We have clear goals and that’s kept in mindseye even with new info altering the course. There mysteries and reveals were predictable and almost eye rolly because I believed it would happen purely for the “if I was a tropey book I’d do this” and then it’d happen. Like I said though I still enjoyed the story but yeah take it all as a grain of salt on that.
Oh the characters. I loved them last book and this one just tore that all down. Yes our FMC is described as chaotic but she should still have an ingrained character to herself that determines how she chooses things, I didn’t see that. It was funny to watch it all though. One of our MMC’s was skeevy and sweet all at once somehow and I couldn’t tell if he knew when he switched from one to the other or cared. At his heart he got a lot better towards the end and honestly I really liked him at the end but definitely an endurance aspect with him. The other MMC shocked me because if what was established in book 1 was correct there were a lot of things that wouldn’t make sense in this one. The side characters were big feeling characters without enough time to establish them which was a struggle. I should’ve cared what happened to them or wondered how they were when not in direct field of view but they were very “out of sight out of mind”
Romance: we’ve got a love triangle, it was already alluded to at the end of book 1 so this is not a spoiler. I will not say this is that book that does it well, it does however do it so stereotypically that I had a great laugh about it. Knowing it was coming I was worried about how we’d redeem our second choice to make him even a consideration without trashing our first, they did redeem him enough that at the end even i consider him so that’s good. For smut we have a touch of open door but due to our triangle we pretty much only get 1.5 scenes as the poor FMC is in crisis. The one major scene isn’t hugely graphic or anything but it does describe the scene over a page or so.
Overall I enjoyed this book but I wouldn’t say it’s a masterpiece. I rate books on enjoyment though. If you don’t take yourself seriously this is a hilarious book whilst also being fun. It felt light which is sometimes exactly what I’m after, a book that things it’s heavy but isn’t.
Note: As this is an ARC I will say a trigger I noticed that wasn’t super clear (I’m all for clear triggers). There is themes/insinuation of sex trafficking/forced breeding Not sure if these things count as a trigger but to me anything that gives me severe ick feelings and fills me with a righteous fury I tend to assume is a trigger
Rating - 5 ⭐ Spice - 2 🌶️ Pace - fast POV - first person, multi pov Cliffhanger - Yes
This second book was even better than the first one! I read the second half in one go.
I wanna keep this spoiler free so.. Just from the title could sense something bad was coming. But nothing prepared me for the angst and heartache this book gave me. Real tears were shed.
I loved all the plot developments, some of them were a real surprise.
Isaac now lives in my heart rent free, and I really wanna see who Kyra ends up with!
The pace was great just like the first book, fast enough to keep the interest at all times!
Now I'm gonna go read the third book cuz I seriously need to know how this ends.
I enjoyed this book, it’s a bit better than the first one in my opinion. It’s faster paced the story evolves a lot quicker which was good considering a lot of things happen in this book When we first met Caspian I thought we were in for yet another love interest, I am so happy that I was wrong. He turns out to be her long since believed dead brother, he is kind of an asshole for not telling her right away who he is to her but I feel like that was a part of moving the plot forward so I’m not too mad about it. Jadox gets taken by the president in the beginning for the book and has to go trough some major trauma with having his memory wiped and forced to heal disabled people. Isaac is Kyras rock trough this book, I warmed up to him and by the middle I was kind of rooting for Isaac to be the one she would choose. I cried for so long after the beach seen when they leave in behind, I am so glad for how that part worked out later on.
All in all, great book with a good plot and great characters. I am looking forward to dive in to the third one.

An excellent fantasy romance in The Linked Trilogy with great world building and an outstanding cast of well-developed characters. A well written storyline with plenty of character development and several plot twists. Page-turning read with plenty of action, lots of suspense, some magik, and a love triangle. Highly recommended addition to The Linked Trilogy. Ready for the next adventure with Kyra, Jadox, and Isaac.
This second instalment in the series was just as flashy and character dynamic driven as the first one; the plot isn't that much of a big deal, but to be honest that's not the reason I'm reading the series. I'm here for a fun time, and Mrs. Swindon is providing just that, so I'm grateful for it. Inconsistencies and incoherences are part of the fun at this point, and everything else is so bizarre that overall it's a balanced experience of "what the hell am I reading" and "I'm so glad I'm able to read this madness".
In this book we have the privilege of seeing Isaac's character do a 360 degrees spin, so that he's not the insufferable arsehole he was in the first book, but a slightly less insufferable and much more slimy version of the same guy that flirts with a girl that's already taken; he puts his lust in first place instead of his hatred for the girl that yeeted his son out of existence and caused the mother of his child to die, like a real macho man does. We can also see how Kyra doesn’t accept her polyamorous nature and is led to believe she has to choose only one of the guys that drool over her, all while trying to prevent a despicable woman to rule over the entire world. It do be like that sometimes, sigh. I’ll wait for her to acknowledge her true self and find someone that loves her for it. My poor baby Jadox gets the worst treatment of all in this book, and he still manages to be the best character of the series, with his patience and endurance despite the brainless idiots that surround him. He deserves better. And I do too: there’s a dreadful lack of Chocolate in this book…I hope the third book has the dog’s pov.
I received an eARC of the book from the author and this represents my honest opinion.
This series gets better and better I swear!! I was a beta reader and I got to enjoy step by step the buildup of this amazing world. The ups and downs of these characters are unbelievable and the obstacles they must pass could break someone in half physically, emotionally and mentally speaking.
I am Isaacs’s biggest fan since the first book. This man deserves the absolute best and his growth is immaculate. Here we get to find out more about him, his past and his relationships with every character. You either love him or hate him, but there is no neutral ground 🤣
I personally was obsessed with him and honestly, as the FMC wasn’t always my cup of tea, i never really rooted for them, but just wanted him to end up with someone deserving of him. ( don’t worry, the author doesn’t make that easy for us, so there is no spoiler here)
The plot twists and drama never stop and i am here for all of that. The author did an amazing job there. I could never guess what was about to happen next. She surprised me again and again and that’s exactly what I am looking for in a book.
The content could be a little extreme for some readers. So keep in mind to check the Tw’s. The spice, the hatred, the love and the confused look on my face made this books so extremely good.
'Relationships are about picking someone and working hard to make it last, through the good and bad, the ups and downs '
I thought the quote from the book about relationships was very apt as the difficulties with relationships forms a major part of the plot.
Severed is book two of The Linked Trilogy and follows directly on from the cliffhanger ending in book one, Scorched.
Where the first book was told from two POVs, this one has three. We get chapters from the three main characters of Kyra, Jadox and Isaac. Three Mystiers with different elemental Magik powers. It's a romantic fantasy or 'romantasy' with the tropes of enemies to lovers, love triangles and possibly even friends to enemies.
Having introduced the world and the characters in the first book, Severed hits the ground running. The plot moves along at a good pace. There is a sex scene early on but just as I thought this could be a smut-fest the fantasy adventure kicked in keeping the characters moving and frequently placing them in danger.
Isaac was late to the party in the first book but here gets equal billing. Thankfully there's much more depth to his character than first appears although every now and then we're reminded he's the librarian for his people even though he never demonstrates any characteristic that fits with that.
With Isaac and Jadox getting equal billing there's more of a choice as to who your favourite will be.
The Linking from the trilogy title is a process of a couple joining together and more or less sharing parts of their soul. I won't give away who is Linked but with this book being called Severed there's the real possibility of a Link being torn asunder. Whether that will happen or how dangerous it is I'm not going to divulge.
Overall it's a fun, entertaining fantasy adventure with Magik, creatures, heroes and villains, twists and surprises and it leaves us with another cliffhanger ending before the third and final part.
I received this ARC from the author for a honest review.
In this second installment of The Linked Trilogy, we find Kyra and Jay blissfully in love living in Draven. Until Issac sees Kyra outside the wards and goes to her, unknowingly leading Ordull army to Draven and Jay being taken away.
Issac and Kyra travel together to free Jay but when they find him, he isn't the same Jay. Kyra is struggling with growing feelings for Issac, she discovers things from her past that weren't as they seemed and is reunited with unlikely people, both good and bad.
A sinister plot is uncovered and devastating consequences ensue leaving Kyra, Jay and Issac at odds with what to do and what their next moves should be in this war they are in the middle of.
What I enjoyed about this installment is seeing the relationship between Issac and Kyra grow (not necessarily the romantic aspectof it though). I also liked the next layer of storyline with learning of Kyra's family history and what her being the Golden one implies for her powers. There was an interesting twist at the end as well.
One of my not so favorite things are love triangles. So it's hard for me to get behind it in the series. But that's just my personal preference and didn't go into my rating decision. A semi major thing I noticed in both books 1 and 2 is that at times the plot feels too rushed and details are lacking/missed for what seems solely for the sake of moving things along more quickly. I would prefer to have those small details to really add a depth to the writing/story structure over a very fast paced book.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I had half a mind to light the entire bookshelf on fire just to get it out of my system and thoroughly enrage him simultaneously. But I couldn’t do that to books.
I loved to return to this vivid world Cassie created. I always enjoy the idea of some magical world being hidden right in front of our eyes so I love books like this where people with “Magik” and normal people live among each other.
The second book in the Linked trilogy started right where the first book left off. We get a sight into the life Kyra and Jadox have build for themselves even though they know it’s only temporary. I loved seeing them have a little time of peace and there were some great 🌶️ scenes.
Overall I enjoyed this book a lot. There were some things I struggled with though. The book is very fast paced. I usually prefer fast paced books because they just never leave you bored but this one felt a little rushed sometimes. Because the book is so fast paced and so many things are happening at the same time, I sometimes got the feeling parts of the plot were forgotten about until they were brought back into the story out of nowhere.
The romance in the book was enjoyable but I do have to mention I’m not a huge fan of love triangles unless they are written exceptionally well. This one, however, felt very stereotypical. FMC falls in love with male 1 in the first book while male 2 is an absolute asshole we all hate. Then, in the second book, something happens that forces the FMC to work together with male 2 and he’s a sweetheart to her all of a sudden so how can she not also fall for him? I still enjoyed their interactions and I’m very curious about who Kyra will choose, but I think there are better ways to establish a love triangle. If you are a fan of love triangles this will be your cup of tea though.
I absolutely loved all of the characters in this book. They were complex and unpredictable which always kept the story interesting. Sometimes they made a completely different decision than I expected them to make. There were some new characters introduced and we got to know a lot of characters a lot better. I can’t wait to see where their stories go.
Finally, there are a lot of plot twists in this book which made me feel a little bit overwhelmed sometimes but also kept me sitting at the point of my seat. They have a lot of things to work out in the next book and I’m very curious about how they’ll deal with all of that.
Severed is the second book in The Linked Trilogy and will have you at the edge of your seat. I did not expect to be sucked in by this book so early on, but after a few chapters, I was fully invested. Kyra's mission continues in the second book but the stakes are higher. Being linked with Jay and Isaac is proven to be challenging as Isaac with his irresistible charm and Jay with his loving nature both have her heart.
There are major plot twists, betrayals, and sacrifices. After this ending, I am eager to know what will happen next. The title 'Severed' is a huge clue as to what happens in the book, so I'm kind of worried about the last book Shattered. There were emotional moments where my heart broke for Isaac and Jay, and moments where I rejoiced. There is a love triangle, so be prepared to have your heart broken. Be sure to check the TW as there are violence and other sensitive topics. Recommended for age 18+.

[arc review] Many thanks to the author, Cassie Swindon, for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review. Severed releases March 4, 2023
*second installment in a trilogy and ends in a cliffhanger*
Severed is a really quick read with no shortage of plot twists and reveals. Told through 3 pov’s, we get to further explore the love triangle situation between the linked group of Kyra, Jadox, and Isaac. As with most love triangles, the individual that was painted as a villain generally gets a new light in the second book, and this was the instance here. I really warmed up to Isaac in Severed and in many ways that can be attributed to the forced proximity, one bed trope, and his unwavering admiration throughout.
Without giving anything major away, we get to learn more about Kyra and her family history which is quite interesting to say the least. The only thing is I would have liked to seen more of her growing into her Magik at the start of the book instead of being immediately thrown into a steamy scene given the fact that everything is still pretty new to her.
I can’t wait to see how this wraps up with the new prophecy surrounding the Full Teal Moon, their unknown fates, and who Kyra will choose as her endgame.
TW: death, gore, death by electrocution targeting disabled people
“What about rules involving promises? What about deep conversations? What about talking each other’s ear off until two in the morning? What about saving each other’s lives? What about sharing our deepest secrets and biggest fears?” “You want those things?” “Yes, love. I’m greedy. I want everything.”
“Your face looks like the sunrise in spring.” “What exactly does that look like?” “Like life.”
Severed, the second book in The Linked Trilogy, is an intense, action-packed ride with twists and surprises you never see coming.
Beginning roughly where the first book left off, we follow Kyra as she tries to harness her newfound power. Turns our the air element isn't as easy to control as she thought. However, when Kyra tells Jadox she needs to leave, it starts things in motion.
Issac can't get Kyra out of his head. She's all he thinks about. He swears it has everything to do with their link, but when things start going south, because of his obsession with Kyra, he starts believing that the link has nothing to do with his feelings.
While this book is full of heartstopping moments, there's a lot of information being thrown at you, and it does get overwhelming at times.
I have a feeling something huge is coming in book three and I'm excited to read it.
This book is so much more than just another love triangle (as per the description). We’ve got family drama, political corruption, and a really wacked out (oops – no spoilers!). With all the battles these three are fighting, how would they even have time to hook up? Anyway… Since the author said ‘not all secrets are meant to be told under the stars’, Imma gonna let the dear reader pick up this book and enjoy it for all that it’s worth.
Does Kyra really *need* to choose? Does her Golden Tattoo help her decide how to proceed with any of her life’s entanglements? Guess we’ll have to find out in ‘Shattered’.
I was given this book as an ARC read. I was not disappointed. Much like the first book of this trilogy, it pulled me in from the beginning. It never hit one of those dull moments, where you wish the book would just get on with it already. Severed continued right on from where Scorched left off. There was a moment where I was worried about 2 of it's main characters. Though some of the issues between them were fixed, not all of them were. Which makes me anxious to read the 3rd (and final) book of the series to see how things end for them, and the rest of the mystier villages.
Jay has been taken, Keyra must rely on Isaac. Is Caspian an ally or a threat? The pace is faster, the action is more intense, the feelings pulled out by the tattoo seem to be strengthening. But are they real or just a side effect? Does Isaac find Wes? Book two leaves book one in the dust, everything is more intense from beginning to end I didn't want to put it down. I can't wait to read Shattered! I have voluntarily left this review.
This book was fast paced and kept me turning the pages from beginning to end! I know whose team I’m on, but I’m really unsure who Kyra will choose in the end. Severed kept me guessing and surprised me multiple times throughout. I especially enjoyed the world building. The blood maidens are especially gruesome! I’m excited to see how this trilogy ends in Shattered!
