EDITOR'S NOTE FOR THE AUTHOR Understanding Genomics NOVEMBER 2021
"UNDERSTANDING GENOMICS; How Nutrition, Supplements, and Lifestyle Can Help You Unlock Your Genetic Superpowers", by Marios Michael, is a fascinating book that gives the clearest explanation of genomics that I have ever encountered. Firstly, it relates how the increasing knowledge in genomics is affecting healthcare by allowing the focus to be on specific genes that affect a particular condition. Even if a "bad" gene is there, its expression can often be discouraged by the use of supplements as well as fasting and a healthier lifestyle. It used to be that we had to guess what supplements to take or what types of diets we should follow, but now we can know if we have genes that can cause, or are causing, specific problems and can meet the problems head on. We can target nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle to "unlock our genetic superpowers," as the author says.
The book is written in a clear, direct, and accessible style, which is a big help to the reader when trying to grasp an essentially difficult topic. The author's fascination with his field and the incredible speed with which it is evolving as new scientific discoveries are made, gives the book a quality that draws the reader into it and keeps him or her there. The book imparts knowledge, hope, and enthusiasm.
A basic breakdown of this book is as The 1st part of the book breaks down the science of genomics with the most up to date scientific information in a user-friendly language. The 2nd part of the book provides information on how epigenetics, environment, exercise, nutrition, food and supplements can help you achieve your optimum health. Exposome or how your genes interact with your environment and prevention based on your genome and/or how to manage health conditions from a genomics perspective is also discussed in great detail. The 3rd part of the book talks about the most common mutations in humans and how to manage them with genomics. It also discusses how to achieve longevity, living to 100 and anti-aging recommendations based on your genome. The last chapter provides information about the future of Genomics and the possibility of bringing back extinct animals and perhaps the dead!
Understanding Genomics is much more than a book that will help you choose the right vitamin supplements and health shakes. Dr. Marios Michael has written a comprehensive guide that enlightens the reader about the presence of potential DNA markers in their bodies and explains steps the reader can take to improve their longevity. Dr. Marios Michael explores the foundation of human genetics and takes his readers through ways they can discover more about their exposomes and inherited traits. Vitamins are reviewed and the author explains ways the reader may ingest them naturally or with the help of supplements provided by reputable companies. I haven’t studied his particular field, but Dr. Marios Michael makes it easier to grasp DNA by starting Understanding Genomics with a foundation of human genetics and building it up to create an appreciation of the newest advances in genomics. Even though some of the terminology was new to me, Dr. Marios Michael thoroughly explained the concepts, making it easier for me to grasp the meaning. I was intrigued by the “fun facts” in each chapter, and I was delighted to find many historical advancements outlined within, and at the end of, the book. I was motivated to look up some of the vitamins, companies, and health products he mentioned, as after he explained their relation to strengthening DNA, I could perceive their importance. I recommend the book to health conscious readers who are interested in genomic and with improving their overall health, right down to their DNA.
As the name suggests, Understanding Genomics by Dr. Marios Michael is a book that talks about our genetics, the role they play in making us who we are; whether it is a gene that makes us athletically more active or whether it is a mutation that makes us susceptible to certain kinds d diseases. And his argument, rightfully so, is that if we can understand our genes at a deeper level, it can help us understand ourselves better, and make lifestyle choices that suit us and us alone. Dr. Michael praises the advancement in technologies that have helped democratize access to our genetic makeup to a great extent, and he makes the argument that based on what we know and how far technology has proceeded, it is not too far-fetched to say that we might be able to bring back an extinct species like dinosaurs. Based on his years of research and practice, he provides us with strategies we can use and changes that we can make to our diet in order to lead a healthier life. I did think that the book got a bit too technical at times, giving the reader a list of genes or a list of foods or superfoods, but the wealth of knowledge present in it pales in comparison to the issue. The information presented is all backed by research which a reader can refer to if they want to dive into the topic deeper, but for some who want an introduction to genes and genetics, this is a great book to start with.
This book covers a fascinating subject that has come a long way over the past 2 decades, and still has a long way to go - that of genomics, or studying all of our genes and how they affect us and interact with our environments. Having majored in biology myself in college, I came to this book from a scientific perspective and I've studied genetics before, but this book is great for those who don't have a science background and have forgotten the building blocks of genetics and biology from their early school days. The author starts the book by explaining the foundational knowledge you need to understand genetics, i.e. the things that make up DNA, what genes are, how proteins are formed, and the body systems and components. He explains these things in a way that those who don't have a science background will be able to understand it.
The most interesting part of the book for me as someone with more rare chronic illnesses was when the author went over the types of mutations that can cause various diseases, and listed the particular genes where mutations on them can lead to these diseases. He also covered over-methylation and under - methylation and all the various mental illnesses and physical ailments that can lead to. However, the author doesn't do a great job of incorporating the perspective of chronic illnesses into the advice and treatments he gives in his book, which was somewhat disappointing. So those with chronic illnesses need to know that the advised treatments for them will probably look different than the ones this author mentions, which is more geared towards generally healthy people or those who have well - researched diseases and risks, like high blood pressure or increased risk of heart disease for example.
Also the part of the book that covers genetic testing was a bit confusing. The author doesn't do a good job explaining whether or not the "raw data" you get from companies like 23&Me and Ancestry can be used to find out if you have genetic mutations related to certain diseases. He says at first that these companies only use single point mutations (SNPs), which are good for things like hair color but not useful for determining if you have an increased risk of heart disease, for example. He then seems to contradict himself on the next page by saying that you only have to do a genetic test once and that this raw data can be used for other things.
The author advises a 28 day detox and then a more permanent detox diet as the first steps in his treatment, which I found a little dubious. The science behind detoxes isn't well - supported and the author says things like caffeine and medications are "toxins" which actually isn't true. Those reading this without a scientific background will probably take what he says about this verbatim, so I wish the author would have been objective and more scientific in this section and presented all "sides" / research. Research has shown that these detoxes can do more harm than good for some people, and the body already detoxes itself through the kidneys and liver. However, I did agree with what he said about avoiding dangerous plastics and produce that has lots of pesticide on it. This section was actually very helpful, as he listed how to identify which plastics contain carcinogens and which non - organic produce has the least pesticide on it.
Dr. Marios Michael’s Understanding Genomics breaks down the complex field of genetics into a structured, reader-friendly format.
The book is divided into three sections, each offering a different perspective on genomics and its real-world applications. Part I: The Science: Boiled Down and Simplified introduces the fundamentals of genetics, explaining DNA, genes, and their role in health. Part II: The Process of Unlocking Your Genes explores how diet, supplements, and lifestyle choices can influence gene expression. It discusses epigenetics, environmental interactions, and how to apply genetic insights to improve overall well-being. Part III: The Variables: Personalized Genomics focuses on genetic mutations, disease risks, and longevity strategies. It emphasizes how each person’s genetic makeup is unique and how genomics can be used to tailor health strategies. The book provides practical guidance to help readers apply these insights to their own lives.
The book approaches genetics with clarity and practicality. The title captures the book’s purpose—helping readers comprehend their genes and use that knowledge to refine their health strategies. Scientific concepts often feel out of reach, but the way this book explains them makes a difference.
What stands out is the straightforward language. Dr. Michael presents genomics without heavy jargon. The sections are short and direct, avoiding the long-winded explanations found in some medical texts. Bullet points and concise paragraphs make it easy to reference key information. This structure keeps the content digestible, which is helpful when dealing with a subject as technical as DNA.
One of the book’s highlights is the inclusion of fun facts in each chapter. These snippets make the reading experience enjoyable. A valuable aspect is its inclusion of product recommendations. Finding supplements that match genetic needs can be overwhelming, but having direct links to vetted products makes the process simpler.
The appendix and bibliography add credibility. Readers who want to dig deeper can explore the studies behind his recommendations. This approach makes the book more trustworthy than opinion-based wellness guides.
There are, however, a few drawbacks. Some sections lean too much into technical details. Readers new to genetics may need to pause and revisit certain explanations. Additionally, the detox recommendations feel rigid. Detoxing is a debated topic, and some claims could use more balance. That said, the overall guidance remains practical, and the book does a solid job of keeping advice grounded in science.
Understanding Genomics delivers well-researched information in an easy-to-follow format. It balances scientific accuracy with accessibility, making it a valuable read for those looking to make informed choices about their well-being. It earns 4/5 for its depth, structure, and practical insights.
Understanding Genomics by Dr. Marios Michael is an exceptional guide for readers interested in harnessing the power of their genetic blueprint to make smarter health and lifestyle decisions. Whether you're a complete novice or someone with a growing curiosity about how your DNA impacts everything from disease risk to diet choices, this book offers a clear, practical, and scientifically sound roadmap.
Dr. Michael excels in demystifying a complex subject. Genetics can often feel overwhelming, filled with intimidating terminology and abstract ideas. However, this book shines in its ability to translate those technical concepts into plain language without oversimplifying the science. The book is thoughtfully divided into three parts: the first covers foundational genomic science in a simplified manner; the second explores the practical applications—how food, supplements, and lifestyle influence gene expression; and the third dives into personalized genomics, explaining how individual genetic variations can inform our unique path to wellness and longevity.
What makes Understanding Genomics stand out is the balance it strikes between education and application. Backed by years of clinical experience as a nutritionist and chiropractor, Dr. Michael blends scientific findings with actionable advice. He discusses detoxification, intermittent fasting, and nutrient optimization, all through the lens of how these interact with your genes. His explanations of methylation pathways, gene-environment interaction, and epigenetics are particularly insightful and framed in a way that encourages readers to take ownership of their health journey.
The structure of the book further enhances its accessibility. With short, focused chapters, bullet-point summaries, and engaging “fun facts” at the end of each section, readers are less likely to feel lost. A thoughtful appendix and bibliography provide extra resources for those who want to dive deeper, adding credibility to his claims and transparency to the science presented.
Admittedly, some sections may feel dense for newcomers—particularly those diving into the biochemistry of specific genes or detox pathways—but this is a minor trade-off considering the depth and breadth of knowledge provided. While certain dietary recommendations may come across as strict or slightly unbalanced, Dr. Michael’s broader message remains empowering and rooted in well-documented research.
In a wellness landscape cluttered with one-size-fits-all advice, Understanding Genomics offers something refreshingly personalized. It’s not just a book about DNA—it’s a guide for living more intentionally based on who you are at the molecular level. Anyone seeking a science-based, individualized approach to health will find this book both informative and inspiring.
Understanding Genomics is an interesting perspective on the body and our genes. The author writes from personal experience as a nutritionist and chiropractor who investigated the science and genomics on his journey to personal health. His research has led him to personal discoveries that he shares with his clients and the readers of this book. The book is written to help readers learn more about genes and the health techniques he has found to have helped him and his family live a healthier life. I really liked how he recommends what has personally worked for him and his family and that his advice comes from personal experience. Readers learn the difference between genetics and genomics, and how studying the interplay of genes can help one to prevent disease in the body. Part of the author’s process involves doing a DNA test with a company to pay a company to give you your DNA raw data information. I feel that this is not something accessible to all readers in terms of pricing and also could be controversial in terms of ethics. The good thing is that getting a genetic test is not necessarily a prerequisite to the advice given throughout the book thereafter. With this information, however, the author provides many options to use the raw data to learn more about your specific condition. Besides this, the author does a great job providing lots of resources about nutrition, longevity, and detoxing the body. The focus of detox and nutrition was my favorite parts of this book. I personally feel that many bodily issues can be resolved through a thorough detoxification. The author did a very good job offering detox and nutritional advice. In the detox section and correcting the inconsistencies of existing detox protocols for the benefit of his readers. In the nutritional section, he really explains years of advice, stating the pros and cons to all the supplemental choices available to us on the market. This really makes it easy for readers to get started without following blindly, but rather moving ahead with an informed approach. This book offers a very scientifically organized standpoint on the physical body. I would love to see how this can be linked to a more holistic approach of mind, body, spirit, as well. Overall, I feel that this book offers a lot of practical advice for readers that care about optimizing their bodily health. It succinctly explains the important things to focus on when you are ready to make a lifestyle change for the better and provides loads of resources for making the steps towards a healthier physical body.
Understanding Genomics is a book that helps readers discover their body and the mechanisms around genes. The topic is considered a complex one and one cannot help but thank the author for demystifying the subject. While at first, it sounds like a biology class, the book goes beyond the lessons in offering profound healthy tips for a more proactive lifestyle. Fun facts segment at the end of every chapter adds a sense of educative humor. Credit to Dr. Marios for using simpler vocabulary that enhances readability even though some medical terms were foreign. I loved the sections beginning with the introduction of what Genomics is and how it affects our body before the revelation of DNA's importance. Being healthy is everyone's concern, and Dr. Marios Michael elaborates how nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle choices play a crucial role. He goes ahead to explain the role of genes in living a longer life: some inherit strong genes while for others lifestyle affects our DNA composition. The book is an interesting read to anyone conscious about their health. Though Dr. Michael uses technical terms, I did not find it hard to understand the idea he was aiming at. Coming from a specialist in the medical field the suggestions offered in the book are life-changing. Dr. Marios does not just quote other studies but adds his own research making the reader form their opinion on matters health and especially DNA roles. He offers advice on supplements and how they can be essential in filling nutritional gaps but they cannot be used as a substitute for a healthy diet. He also emphasizes the need to adopt lifestyle behaviors that can help in improving an individual's health and avoiding exposure to environmental toxins. The author acknowledges that individuals need to be on the look out for products in the market and assess the pros and cons before purchasing. I appreciate how the doctor has used scientific research coupled with his years of experience in the medical field to enlighten readers on living a healthy life. The idea of detoxifying our bodies was a profound one as it allows our bodies to return to its natural state for better functionality. Those intending to make a difference in their lives as pertains to matters physical health then this book is a must read. It will change your perspective about the how genes can influence your living. Get on board and optimize your health!
Understanding Genomics is focused on individual variation in the human genome and how the standard determinants of health, diet and exercise, are by no means one-size-fits all, but mean different things depending on the genetic makeup of the person in question. The author is a chiropractic physician and nutrition specialist who also holds a certification in Genetics and Genomics from Stanford University. His mission in this book is to introduce the reader to the factors that influence genes and are influenced by them, and to make recommendations as to how people can use nutrition and exercise to maximize their genetic potential.
I do have some cautionary notes about the science as presented. The author makes quite a big deal about going through detoxification prior to adopting a genetically-fitted diet. As detailed in this article about detoxification, the concept is imprecise and not exactly medically sound. The term is really mean for patients recovering from substance addiction, not for getting rid of non-specific toxins in the body. Another thing that bothered me was that in a few cases the author mentioned Down Syndrome as a possible effect of certain genes or exposure to environmental toxins. Down Syndrome (also known as Trisomy-21) results from a highly specific extra chromosome and is present at birth, so I am a bit unclear as to what this means. The implication could be that the presence of these genes or toxins raises the risk of someone having a child with Trisomy-21, but this should have been definitively stated. I looked through the bibliography and while some of the sources appear to be from peer-reviewed medical journals, there are also more questionable ones listed.
I stand by my caveats, but I will also concede that this book does provide an interesting introduction to an emergent branch of medicine. The concepts explored are fascinating and show genetics in a fresh light after the traditional high school level introduction to the topic (pea plants, Punnett Squares, you remember). Not only are genes more complex than I used to think, but they are more malleable and responsive to external factors. I do recommend it to anyone curious about genomics as a whole. However, I still suggest comparing the information in the book to that in other sources to develop a more clear and complete picture.
Understanding Genomics is a June 2022 book by Dr. Marios Michael. The nine-chapter, 290-page book is subdivided into three parts: Part I: The Science: Boiled Down and Simplified; Part II: The Process of Unlocking Your Genes; and Part III: The Variables: Personalized Genomics.
As per the introductory section, a couple’s routine exercise, amid a spouse’s outperformance, sheds light on genealogy and offers insights into genetics, esp. in medical applications, competitive sports, and general wellbeing.
The two-chapter Part I: The Science: Boiled Down and Simplified waxes lyrical about the basics of the human DNA and gene regulation. Its in-depth coverage of the human DNA includes the makeup, related organ systems, chromosomes, cells, genomes, and mutations—these orient the reader to the ensuing molecular biology narrative.
The epigenetics chapter and its gene regulation topic wowed me with its common factors that influence DNA changes, causes of DNA damage, molecular releases “that activate or deactivate certain substances like an on/off switch” and the potential causes—and characteristics—of many listed health issues.
In the five-chapter Part II: The Process of Unlocking Your Genes, my favorite key takeaways are: ways of obtaining genetic data, and numerous sector-specific companies offering genotyping and sequencing services; toxin exposure, major toxins, and the need for, and how to, detox; metabolism-related insights, cardiovascular health, the concept of eating “for your genes”, especially organic foods, and being mindful of your food preparation.
In the two-chapter Part III: The Variables: Personalized Genomics, I particularly loved the author’s advice on how to adjust to genetic mutations, including his recommended nutrition plans, supplements, and longevity hacks.
There is much to be learned from this gem.
From fun facts to hacks, relatable analogies to a comprehensive bibliography, and insights to foresights, the insightful Understanding Genomics is a must-read for a healthy lifetime.

Understanding Genomics: How Nutrition, Supplements, and Lifestyle Can Help You Unlock Your Genetic Superpowers, by Dr. Marios Michael DC CNS cFMP is a complicated but well-thought-out and explained book. Dr. Michael does a fine job of explaining some rather complex information that can be digested (pun, semi-intended) in a way that those without a medical degree or a certification in genomics can understand. First, Dr. Michael gives us a detailed but basic explanation of genomics, followed by a series of issues that can arise and supplements that can help on a DNA level to prevent them. That is as simplified an explanation of this book as I can give you here as this is, while short, a very dense read.
This book is informative and a great resource I will likely return to when I can get some proper testing and have a long chat about supplements with my medical professional. I did enjoy that Dr. Michael is not pressing his preferred supplementation on the readers, and he states multiple times that one should discuss them with your medical provider before use. This hits home that this book is written by an actual medical professional and not some random social media guru trying to get you on to the next hit diet trend. As stated above, the information is well explained for those with only primary education. However, it would have been nice to see some pronouncement aspects of the longer words as I spent some time on Google trying to figure out how to say them.
This is an excellent resource worth picking up if you want information on genomics and DNA support supplements.

"Understanding Genomics" by Dr. Marios Michael is a beginner friendly guide that explains how our genes influence our health and how we can make smarter lifestyle choices based on that knowledge. The book is divided into three parts: the science behind genetics, the process of applying genetic insights, and personalized health strategies.
Dr. Michael breaks down complex topics like DNA, gene regulation, and epigenetics into simple language, using relatable examples. He explains how external factors like diet and environment can affect gene expression and health outcomes.
The book also covers genetic testing, though some explanations are unclear and slightly contradictory. Dr. Michael recommends detoxing and tailoring your diet and supplements to your genetic makeup. While his advice on avoiding toxins and choosing healthier food is practical, some of his detox claims lack strong scientific backing.
What makes the book valuable is its focus on personalized health helping readers understand that one - size - fits - all solutions don’t work for everyone. By understanding your genes, you can optimize diet, exercise, and supplements to improve well-being.
Clear writing, short chapters, and fun facts make the book engaging. While it leans toward general wellness and may not fully address chronic illness needs, it’s a helpful resource for anyone seeking to use genetics to improve their health.
If you’ve tried to get healthy but feel like you’ve been hitting your head against a brick wall, it could have something to do with your genes. In “Understanding Genomics,” the well-studied author and doctor dives deep into how our DNA and RNA affect our health. He writes in layman’s terms, though there’s still a lot of information to absorb.
What I liked most about the book is that it offers so much information on healthy and unhealthy foods, hormones, taking the right supplements, and ensuring you get the right physical activity. Of course, to get everything right, the author suggests you get your DNA tested so you can find out exactly what your genes are dealing with. With this information, the idea is that you can better your health with that information.
I also found it interesting that our genes may have something to do with how long we live. And, while we can’t change our genes, through better care of our bodies, we can make dormant genes come to life and calm genes that may not be doing anything good for us. The right foods help boost cell health, too … which can aid in a longer life and may help fight off certain diseases, according to this text. This is a worthwhile read even if you don’t intend to get your DNA tested. It’s filled with health tips that can help you live a healthier life.
If you’ve ever felt lost in the supplement aisle, confused about diets, or just frustrated that "healthy living" advice feels like a scam then this book is the answer. This book is truly a game-changer. I’ve read many health books, but this one is something different.
Now after reading this book, it makes sense why some people thrive on keto while others don't or why individuals respond differently to stress.
Here is the key takeaway from the book: Your genes are not your destiny. Yes, you might have a "bad" gene but this book gives you cheat codes to hack it like fasting, specific nutrients, and lifestyle changes.
The writing style is simple and engaging. Real gene mutations (like MTHFR, COMT, and ApoE4) have been explored and the best part about the book is that it gives practical tips like what to eat, which supplements work even anti-aging hacks based on your DNA. It also talks about the future possibilities which is mind-blowing. The fascinating future possibilities about reversing ageing, maybe even bringing back extinct species are also discussed in a realistic way.
If you’re tired of generic health advice and want to finally understand what YOUR body needs? Stop scrolling and read this. Life’s too short to waste on ineffective diets—get this book and take control of your life.
When I picked up this title, I wasn’t really sure how much I was going to understand and get out of it, given my non-scientific background. However, to my surprise, by the last page, I felt I could discuss the subject with experts. "UNDERSTANDING GENOMICS; How Nutrition, Supplements, and Lifestyle Can Help You Unlock Your Genetic Superpowers", by Marios Michael explores an essentially difficult topic in a manner that’s accessible to all.
The author’s intent to share his knowledge over the years with readers is well evident in the initial pages. And he achieves his goal successfully with this book.
What was once thought to be impossible is beginning to happen, and Genomics is at the forefront of this transition. Today, scientists can produce fully functional organs using technology. That suggests, in the future, we may have humans wholly produced in a lab. Isn’t that interesting? The writer has touched upon topics and situations that are common but generally misunderstood.
The read not only informs, but it also educates and helps you understand health management through genes. A good portion of the book is dedicated to explaining how to live a healthy life, steering away from diseases and age-related issues. In the final chapters, the author attempts to explore what the future might look like with Genomics. A complete package on the subject.
Dr. Marios Michael's debut, "Understanding Genomics: How Nutrition, Supplements, and Lifestyle Can Help Unlock Your Genetic Superpowers" is an informative guide on using the power of your genes to optimize your health and well being. A chiropractor and nutritionist, Dr. Michael has spent years researching genetics and genomics. He presents his findings using a simple and accessible approach, making the information easy to understand for non-scientific readers. "Understanding Genomics" is divided into three sections. The first section gives an introduction and general overview of genetics, from DNA to RNA, to chromosomes, proteins, and amino acids. Dr. Michael skillfully uses simple language to breakdown complex scientific concepts. Part two discusses the role of nutrition in our lives, as well as its importance and effects on development. While section three delves into the external factors that influence our genes, such as anxiety, sleep, and exercise. The book is an interesting mix of scientific facts as well as the author's personal experience with health techniques that have worked for him and his family. Understanding Genomics: How Nutrition, Supplements, and Lifestyle Can Help You Unlock Your Genetic Superpowers, written by Dr. Marios Michael, is a fascinating read, especially for readers that want to improve their health. In this book, Dr. Marios Michael breaks down how to help anyone unlock their genetic superpowers. This includes reintroducing information about DNA, and from there, steps to help improve oneself.
Dr. Marios Michael does a great job with breaking everything down. Sometimes anything that deals with biology can be a little too much to take in. It could feel like a daunting task, but not with this book. It was pretty cool to be reintroduced to information in a way that didn't seem boring. Not only that, but also breaking down the steps to achieve improvements in health was nice. There were some interesting fun facts to read as well.
There wasn’t anything that needed to be improved in this book. Dr. Marios Michael did a good job at getting to the point and making this an easy read. This book will definitely bode well for readers who want to improve their health and for anyone who wants to learn the potential that their genetics possess. This book gets a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
I liked the fact that the author repeatedly acknowledges the limitations of current research and technology yet paints an optimistic picture of what might lie ahead. While some knowledge about biology might be helpful here, it is not strictly necessary. I think high-school science will be sufficient to understand most of the content.
It will be advisable to read each chapter sequentially, as later chapters contain mentions of certain terms and opinions which are discussed adequately well in earlier chapters. A lot of the advice being given is very actionable and draws upon the author's experience. Most of the medical products and services being suggested will be relevant in the US and to some extent, the UK.
There is a helpful list of references at the end of the book. While it is easy to get overwhelmed by the long lists of concepts introduced in the chapters, the author tries hard to strike the right level of detail without over-simplification. While it might be easy to get bored and lose interest when the author dives deep into certain specifics, it presents many fresh and hard-to-believe perspectives that break some common myths around human health.
Understanding Genomics by Dr. Marios Michael DC CNS cFMP is a comprehensive explanation of what genomics is and how it can help us to make better lifestyle choices. The author first explains some biological concepts, then goes into details about the lifestyle changes we can make to support our health. These include taking the right kinds of supplements, eating well, and exercising regularly.
I really enjoyed learning more about genomics, and a lot of the information was new to me. Some of the sections moved quite quickly, so people who don't have any knowledge of biology might get lost. There is also a lot of information about very specific genes, which is hard to remember for the average reader. An additional round of editing would be beneficial because there are some typos and misspelled words.
Despite this, many parts of the book are extremely helpful, and so is the comprehensive bibliography, which allows readers to find out more about the topics that apply to them. I particularly enjoyed the section about exercise, which gives very concrete and easy-to-implement tips.
I had to read this book because I had just recently watched the 'un-natural selection' docuseries and was very curious about ethical genomics afterwards. Diving right in, at first I was worried I wouldn't be able to understand anything and that it'd be over my head with terminology and whatnot. But I was so pleasantly surprised because I was able to easily digest chapter after chapter and actually absorb and retain the information within! What I loved most is that it doesn't just focus on genomics, but how things affect our genes. I really love the (mostly) holistic and natural approach the author takes towards leading healthy lives and educating the reader on which genes are tailored for human health. I also loved the chapter dedicated to diet and exercise. You will learn a wealth of knowledge about which foods affect our genes, whether positively or negatively, along with which supplements and exercises are best suited for you depending on your specific genes. Overall this book is well written, easily digestible, and I'd absolutely recommend you give it a chance!

As some who actively has a lot of chronic health issues and identifies as a professional patient, I found this book to be incredibly helpful and affirming. It is so well written considering the density and complexity of the content. Dr. Marios Michael, the inspired author, does his best to make the material accessible and even gives very clear information as to what practical steps can look like in our own lives.
For people who are tired of self-help health books simply saying to do yoga and drink smoothies, this book will be a revelation. Dr. Marios Michael takes such care to explain exactly how our bodies work on a cellular level and exactly how we can work with them to improve health and longevity.
Truly a wonderful and helpful read that I recommend to everyone looking to have a more intimate relationship with their own bodies, their own health, and thus their own lifestyle.
