Αν και εκπρόσωπος του Βελγικού κλασσικισμού (καθαρές γραμμές, λεπτομερής ρεαλισμός, αυστηρή γεωμετρία και προοπτική) σε μια εποχή που τόσο οι συντοπίτες του Ιταλοί όσο και οι Γάλλοι πρωτοπόροι πειραματίζονταν με τα όρια του μέσου, ο Giardino έχει σκαρφιστεί εδώ μια από τις καλύτερες ντετέκτιβ-νουάρ ιστορίες ever!
1939: η Βουδαπέστη ξαναζωντανεύει σε όλο το προπολεμικό μεγαλείο της, για να προσφέρει καταφύγιο αλλά και να στήσει θανατηφόρες παγίδες σε έναν απρόθυμο ερασιτέχνη κατάσκοπο στην υπηρεσία των Γάλλων. Η ναζιστική Abwehr έχει απλώσει τα πλοκάμια της παντού, προκειμένου να εμποδίσει τον Max Friedman να ανακαλύψει μυστικά που ίσως κρίνουν την πορεία της Ευρώπης προς τον πόλεμο.
Και αν πραγματικός πρωταγωνιστής φαίνεται να είναι η ίδια η πόλη με τα αυτοκρατορικά της κτίρια και τα στρωμένα με πλίνθους και πέτρα σοκάκια της, η δράση σε ανύποπτο χρόνο θα μεταφερθεί σε άλλα μήκη και πλάτη, της παρθενικά όμορφης Τήνου συμπεριλαμβανομένης!
Το ιταλικό πρωτότυπο είναι έγχρωμο αλλά προσωπικά πιστεύω ότι η σύγκριση με την ασπρόμαυρη έκδοση της Βαβέλ δικαιώνει την δεύτερη, έστω και αν η επιλογή φαίνεται να έγινε για λόγους οικονομίας (η ποιότητα του χαρτιού είναι χείριστη, αλλά οι διάστικτες με κίτρινα ίχνη υγρασίας σελίδες προσφέρουν μυστήριο και άρωμα στην δική μου τουλάχιστον ανάγνωση).

“XIII mystery – “Max Fridman” – Rapsódia Húngara – Volume 8”
A ASA em colaboração com o jornal Público lançou em 2011 uma colecção composta por 12 volumes com 22 histórias inéditas em português. A colecção “Os Incontornáveis de Banda Desenhada – XIII mystery” tinha o preço apelativo de 7,40 €.
A série XIII foi criada por William Vance e Jean van Hamme.
Max Fridman - um ex-agente secreto, inteligente, atraente e discreto, agora um homem de negócios a viver em Genebra, Suiça, com a sua filha Ester - é pressionado “amigavelmente” para retomar o serviço e dessa forma pagar o silêncio das autoridades francesas.
Estamos em 1938 em Budapeste e os membros da rede de espionagem francesa Rapsódia foram mortos, excepto a espia Etel Moget, que escapa milagrosamente; com as suspeitas a recaírem na agência russa NKVD ou na alemã Abwehr.
O solitário e eficaz Max Fridman é encarregado de desvendar o mistério, em cenários deslumbrantes, numa atmosfera enigmática e misteriosa, associada aos países do leste da Europa, onde as redes de espionagem se degladiam em busca de informações, num período conturbado de pré-guerra europeia, num contexto geo-político de inegável interesse histórico.
“Max Fridman” – Rapsódia Húngara” é uma excelente e emocionante leitura, com destaque maior para o argumento de V. Giardino (n. 1946), que também é o desenhador.

ALSO a guy with an orange head and beard who walks around with a pipe didn't and don't get the babes that Max gets. Maybe in England.
I've never read anything more confusing- I was so angry the entire time! I give this **** reluctantly because Giardino is an amazing storyteller -the best- but he assumed the reader could understand too much and had very specific historical knowledge.
The art was EXCELLENT- as it always with Giardino.

Να προσθέσω και εγώ το +1 μου. Από τα καλύτερα που εχω διαβάσει και σίγουρα το διαμάντι της ομπρελας Βαβέλ Noir. Μ'αρέσει τόσο που αισθάνομαι τυχερός που έπεσε στα χέρια μου και μπόρεσα να το διαβάσω.Τα δύο εουρο που έδωσα είναι πολύ λίγα. Φοβερό καθαρό,ρεαλιστικό σχέδιο και ιστορία που σπάει κοκκαλα. Ο Giardino έχει τον σεβασμό μου πλέον ως δημιουργός.

Hungarian Rhapsody
The story takes place in 1938 and it follows Max Friedman, a retired secret agent who's called back into duty. He needs to find out the reason behind a series of killings of members of a specific group of the French counter-espionage. In order to do that he'll have to avoid numerous murder attempts, realise who he can trust and who he cannot and try to not fall in love.
This was a very interesting secret agent/detective story, with a complex historical backdrop. The characters are very well written. Max Friedman is a very atypical protagonist. He doesn't resemble other popular secret agents from movies, books and comics. He's less like James Bond and more like Philip Marlowe (the private investigator in Raymond Chandler's crime books). He's very melancholic, in his forties and doesn't seem to have any special fighting skills. Everything that he accomplishes is thanks to his intelligence, hard work and determination (and also luck). That's something that I always appreciate in a character. I feel like that makes him more likeable and also relatable, because unlike characters like James Bond, he feels very human and vulnerable. Besides him, the numerous side characters are also very interesting and well written. From the rich nobleman to the Greek boat captain and from the love interest/damsel in distress to the spy who also has a whorehouse, every character in this graphic novel is overtly interesting to read. Moreover, this graphic novel includes an archetype that I always find very interesting. The man who wants a stable, relaxed life, but is stuck in a life that couldn't be further from that, depriving him from normal love and affection. In modern fiction, there are many kinds of characters like that, from cowboys to seamen and from secret agents to private investigators. I don't really relate to this kind of life, but I always love to read it/watch it. It's so exhilarating and depressing at the same time. Just perfect! Furthermore, what truly sets this comic apart from different comics of this kind is how deeply embedded history is to the core of the story. Truly, this is a graphic novel oozing with history. Taking place in 1938, in the brink of world war II, it perfectly shows the historical events that took place at the time. Racism against Jewish people, the rise of communism in a lot of countries and also the corruption that existed in a lot of communist parties (which ultimately hurt communism immensely), the Spanish Civil war and the events that led to the beginning of the second World War.

Speaking about the events that led to the beginning of WWII, the ending of this graphic novel is absolutely socking. It ends with a huge plot twist that reveals that the whole operation and the boat "seagull" that Max was after was a distraction that allowed the German's to easily enter Austria, with little to no resistance. This was so unexpected, but also made so much sense. Truly an incredible ending.
In classic European comic fashion, Vittorio Giardino, besides writing the incredible script for this graphic novel, also drew the amazing artwork. Every panel in this comic is extremely realistic, with very clean line work. The shadows are also beautiful, the faces are unique and expressive and the landscapes of Budapest look like photographs. Also, the page structure is great and the direction/use of perspective is very unique and it works very well.
Overall, this was a great graphic novel, with beautiful artwork and writing that every history lover will enjoy.

To takie komiksy, o których najlepiej byłoby napisać, że nudnawe, ale z racji jakiegoś tam uznania określisz je raczej jako "solidne" i "oferujące klasyczną narrację". Główny bohater jest tak bezpłciowy, że jutro już nie będę o nim pamiętał, a fabuła toczy się ślamazarnie z racji zbyt wielu słów, nazwisk, które trudno zapamiętać i intrygi, jaką można sobie wprawdzie w głowie sensownie poukładać, ale żeby się nią ekscytować trzeba mieć pewnie 70 lat. Nie no, przesadzam, ale w 2022 naprawdę trudno się tu czymkolwiek podniecić

Me ha gustado un poco menos que ¡No pasarán!, quizá por que la ambientación húngara prebélica me queda más a trasmano que la guerra española. Por lo demás la formula de thriller de espionaje a lo John le Carré con una especie de McGuffin que no lleva a nada me parece repetitiva. El dibujo sigue siendo magnífico pero los personajes son bastante más planos.

Max Fridman tiene un pasado que por ahora desconozco. Seguramente con el resto de novelas gráficas iré descubriendo. El arte gráfico es de lo mejor en este cómics y en toda la obra de Vittorio Giardino. Cuando terminé la obra dedicada al librero de Praga, al compararla con esta, veo como el nivel de detalles es asombroso, se dedico a especializarse en un momento histórico determinado y su arte es espléndido.

La intriga internacional da a Giardino una oportunidad para lucirse. Con un guión escrito por capas y personajes bien trazados, la historia de una antihéroe tratando con secretos en el filo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial tiene además un dibujo detallado y elegante, inusualmente luminoso para este tipo de tramas. Rok 1938, na starym kontynencie da się wyczuć ogromne napięcie, które udziela się nie tylko zwykłym ludziom, ale również rządom poszczególnych krajów. Każdy zdaje sobie sprawę z tego, że zbliża się coś „wielkiego”, co zmieni oblicze świata. Nikt nie jest jednak świadom ogromu tragedii, z którymi przyjdzie się mierzyć. W takich realiach trwa wzmożony konflikt wywiadów. Agencje poszczególnych państw przygotowują się na niebezpieczną przyszłość. Jedną z ofiar trwającej „wojny cieni” jest francuska sieć szpiegowska Rapsodia. Ktoś w Budapeszcie zaczyna likwidować agentów tej siatki. Nie wiadomo kto za tym stoi, czy są to Niemcy, Rosjanie czy może jeszcze ktoś inny. Sprawa musi zostać szybko wyjaśniona, najlepiej przez kogoś sprawdzonego, potrafiącego radzić sobie z wieloma problemami. Tym kimś jest Max Fridman, genialny śledczy, który nie wie, że jego działania mogą wpłynąć na oblicze historii.
Rapsodia węgierska jest początkiem większej serii przygód Maxa Fridmana autorstwa włoskiego twórcy Vittorio Giardino. Tytuł posiada wiele zalet, które sprawiają, że jest to pozycja warta uwagi. Do najważniejszych z nich zaliczają się jednak dwa elementy.
Po pierwsze historia. Twórcy udaje się tutaj zachować bogaty, intensywny i szczegółowy kontekst historyczny. Autor ukazuje tutaj świat, który wyczuwa, że zbliża się coś „wielkiego i niebezpiecznego”. Dotyczy to zarówno państw, agencji wywiadów czy zwykłych ludzi. Giardino dba o szczegóły kreślonego scenariusza, zarówno te czysto historyczne, jak i te z otoczenia bohaterów (ciekawy obraz Budapesztu końca lat 30tych). W 99.9% album wypełniają dobrze napisane dialogi, które popychają historię do przodu. Ze szpiegowskim klimatem komiksu łączą się również świetne kreacje bohaterów. Postacie są niezwykle żywe i prawdziwe, dotyczy to zarówno głównego bohatera, jak i napotkanych przez niego osób.
Trochę mniej entuzjastycznie można wypowiadać się na temat warstwy graficznej albumu. Rysunki swoim stylem przypominają lata 70-te, gdzie artyzm prac mieszał się z pewną umownością niektórych detali. tr. Macar rapsodisi..
I’m always captivated by Giardino’s intricate, refined, and truly stunning artwork (especially the beautiful elements he illustrates—you know what I mean ;)). For me, it’s hard to imagine anyone not being a fan of his art, since beauty isn’t as relative as people might think :). With his drawings consistently earning a perfect 5/5, the ratings here are simply a way to rank his books based on the strength of their stories.
The plot of Hungarian Rhapsody is challenging to follow. It’s filled with characters and twists, and getting a firm grasp on it requires some prior knowledge of the era..
I’m always captivated by Giardino’s intricate, refined, and truly stunning artwork (especially the beautiful elements he illustrates—you know what I mean ;)). For me, it’s hard to imagine anyone not being a fan of his art, since beauty isn’t as relative as people might think :). With his drawings consistently earning a perfect 5/5, the ratings here are simply a way to rank his books based on the strength of their stories.
The plot of Hungarian Rhapsody is challenging to follow. It’s filled with characters and twists, and getting a firm grasp on it requires some prior knowledge of the era..
