1987. Carl Hamilton is the best spy of the Swedish Military Intelligence. He is rich, tall, blond and handsome, and moreover, he has leftist ideals.
Unfortunately, after only two missions, he already suffers from Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorders. Too bad, he accidently kills his girlfriend while cooking. Not a problem. The Swedish state (sorry Kingdom) needs him, and the best spy shall not go to jail for killing a woman. The male-only and male supremacist leadership of the Swedish Military Intelligence exempts him from a trial and send him to a new mission. Bring a Soviet defector from Egypt to Sweden.
Two missions ago, Hamilton was killing Israeli terrorist to protect Palestinian refugees, he will now have to kill Palestinian terrorists sponsored by GRU agents to safeguard his Russian defector.
Hamilton kills his targets regardless of their sex, the colors of their skins, or their religions.
In a way, one realizes that Jan Guillou is almost more French than Swedish, but it does not matter. The book is excellent. Of course, you need to enjoy this subtle mixture of irony and cynicism which is Guillou’s trademark.
Unfortunately, not available in English.
