I’m Everly Abbott, and I work for one of the most dangerous vampires in the world. He’s known as Alexius, the Hunter and he’s also one of the oldest.
We’ve been invited to a gathering of ancients like him, and we can’t pass on this opportunity. We’re hoping to gather information, anything that might draw us closer to the group behind Jacob’s murder, the events in Alaska, and the threatening email I received. However, we’re not the only ones attending with our own agenda.
Ancient political rivalries and dangerous schemes wait for us in upstate New York. Even our host, Isaiah, Master of the Tribunal, is on edge. He has good reason to be.
A gathering of ancient vampires can be a grand affair. It can also be a deadly one.
This is third in an Urban Fantasy series that builds character and plot over time. You definitely want to read them in order.
You know more or less what you are getting with this one and that's a good thing. I think this series is really hitting its stride and Everly's character is solidifying into the introvert who is willing to do the hard things, even socializing if necessary. I've come to really appreciate her and Alexius through her. I particularly like that he lets her see a side of him no-one else can.
And I really liked her coming into her own in unexpected ways in this story. She isn't afraid to take action when the blood hits the wall and it's great that she thinks through things and makes what she can do count.
I think I'll leave it at that. This is an easy five stars, though I'll note that Banet has a pattern of the first half of the story being necessary lead-in to the action. It can feel slow if you aren't willing to sink into the narrative the way I've grown accustomed to.
A note about Chaste: Alexius and Everly are building a touching intimacy, but neither is in a place for it to turn romantic. At least, not yet. So they're both careful, though in entirely different ways. I think that works very well and makes this a very chaste story without even a little kissing.
This series has been a delightful surprise to me, honestly. I delayed starting on it because the first book - and the feedback I'd heard about it - sounded like it would drive me bananas. And to be fair, it did. But once Alexius enters the picture and Everly starts to come into her own, it really clicked for me.
Now it is fully settled into its stride, and I find it to be a compelling mystery that we're untangling. Which ancients are trying to overthrow the system and return to the monstrous old days before civilization? And why? What's the goal, because how can they imagine they'd survive in the world once they're exposed? (Something I talked about a lot in my book 2 review, so I won't go back into here.)
I like the tender friendship between Alexius and Everly, and the hints that something more is blooming. I like Isaiah (and I'm a little worried for him, because it seems like this situation is really hurting him and possibly pushing him away from the more civilized life Jacob encouraged him to live), and I'm enjoying meeting others in the community. This series strays a bit into horror - fights are GRUESOME, so much more than any other series in the larger Tribunal world - which is nice because it helps keep it distinct. I never minded the horror elements, not even in book 1 (my problems with the first 2/3 of book 1 were more about Everly).
Another great installment in what is becoming an auto-buy series! As with the last book in this series, the majority of the story reads like a murder mystery - just set in a dangerous paranormal setting. After a vampire changes into something very scary and goes on a rampage, killing multiple, ancient vampires, Everly and Alexius work to find the reasons and the person behind the killings. It isn’t until the very last few chapters that things really ratchet up. But it is those chapters that upped my rating that half point from a very enjoyable and interesting 4 stars to a 4.5. Everly was AWESOME! And that was not long after I was rolling my eyes thinking she was making a ridiculous TSTL choice.
SOPE… overall? Interesting but not riveting throughout most of the book, AMAZING at the last. Can’t wait for the next one!!
I really like this series, but it reads slow for me, this one seemed particularly slow at the start and really took me a while to get into.
This vampire summit didn't seem like a good idea at the start to me, considering that people seem to be gunning for Everly and Alexius. Even with Isiah as an ally so much could go wrong and did go wrong. It was a shit show from the start, so many old, strong, vampires posturing around, all looking to one up the other. Everly did pretty good observing it all and throwing out her own quips, letting them all know she wasn't a scared little girl hiding behind Alexius. In fact 2 times Everly did what the rest of them couldn't and save the day, along with saving others. By the end of the book, they knew who the bad guys were this round, but sadly they seem like they are pawns in a larger game and those people weren't found and have clearly let Everly know she is not out of their sites yet. It will be interesting to see what the next moves are.
Nothing much happened until more than halfway through the book, and all the real exciting action wasn't until the last 20%. So many new vampires were introduced that I still couldn't get them straight by the time I finished. I also wasn't sure why I should care, even though a lot of them were ancient vampires. I did like how Everly settled a little more into her new vampire powers, but the overall mystery had no progress and only new questions were introduced.
Great book 3, to be honest the first 50% was a bit of an info dump. Banet really puts in the effort to build a world that is believable but sometimes it is too much. The best part for me happened after 50% and I really fell into the story.
Alexius is a terrific character and Everly is coming into her own (even if its a little OTT at times). They make a great team and I like the little glimpses into their attraction to each other. It looks like the next book has been in the works for a while so not sure about continuing- but most likely will once released!
We see Kaliya and Raphael as the story crosses Cambions and it will be interesting to see where this goes!
Highlights & Spoilers: “I am tired of people trying to kill me because of their poor choice of sexual partner,” Alexius mumbled.
And this lol: “I can still be a… messy… eater,” I said, swallowing. I knew I wasn’t alone with Rupert. Alexius was sitting outside the door, listening to every word, making sure I didn’t eat the butler.
Everly has to feed off a human, loved this bit: “You probably made his night,” Isaiah answered even though he wasn’t the man I had asked. “The poor man would have died happy if we let him.” “You hit him harder than I think you intended,” Alexius murmured. “He—” “Came,” Isaiah finished. “Hilarious.”
This book was a meeting of the ancients and Everly was supposed to be a shadow during the meeting to find the minds that were behind what happened at her nest.
There were a lot of characters but not enough page time between them to really get to know any of them well. Therefore at the conclusion I was confused and not enough was revealed considering no other books have come out after this one, with none in the foreseeable future I was also frustrated. Overall I loved the characters of Alexius, Everly even Isiah and Marcus. The mystery and whodunit was engaging and I was not able to guess the end. I enjoyed the book and the whole world that was created.
Pacing was a bit off. I felt like the plot only began around the 60% mark, and it began explosively and it was gripping. Excited to read the next book.
I really enjoyed this book and read it in one go. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one, but it isn’t released yet as far as I know. I’m looking forward to read how the story develops.
The more books I read in the Tribunal Archives universe, the more I become obsessed with its characters.
Everly still doesn't know who is stalking her, but attending a gathering of ancient vampires, might give her and Alexius a hint. Or maybe not? Things don't go as planned and someone is attempting to take down the ancients, including Alexus. Everly will need to show what's he's capable of to protect the people (vampires) she has started to care about.
I love how strong Everly is even if she doesn't know it herself. Her romance with Alexius is extremely slow-burn, so I hope that with book 4 there will be more progress there.
I've been struggling with each book in the Everly Abbott series trying to figure out if I want to continue with future installments. "Tainted Blood" answered that question for me. Sadly, I will not be going on with this series after this book. Why? The books seem to drag on and on with mediocre plots and situations. I just can't do this anymore.
This time Everly, Isaiah and Alexius are holding a big meeting of the ancient vampires. Of course, prior to the meeting Everly is still getting threatening emails. It is clear that someone wants her dead. Alexious insists that Everly is outfitted with the finest of clothing and accessories. When they arrive at Alexious home Everly gets a chance to meet some of the ancients and deal with the obnoxious games they play all in hopes of ferreting out Alexius secrets.
Someone mixes tainted blood into the glass of one of the ancients turning him into a raving monster. He kills several people before Everly and Alexius bring him down. Now, they have to research exactly how this could have happened bringing in the information provided by none other than Kaliya Singh and her Cambion mate, Raphael. I love the Kaliya Singh series so their appearance was the only thing that really made this read tolerable for me. It is very clear that Alexius, Isaiah and Everly will have to keep the source of the monstrous change a secret and the person sending the threatening emails continue to taunt and stalk Everly.
As I stated earlier, this was a mediocre read for me and I couldn't wait to finish it. I am not moving on with the next book because life is too short for so, so books. Sorry, Ms. Banet, this one just isn't for me.
This is the third book in the series and love how the characters are growing over the course of the books. Alexius is engaging more with the modern world and Everley after isolating himself for centuries. Everley is growing in her knowledge of vampire lore and the politics of the various nests being educated by Isiah and Alexius. The sexual tension between Alexius and Everley is building steadily tho frustratingly neither have succumbed yet. This story revolves around cambion blood, which as we know from the Kaliya Sahni series makes vampires go crazy and turn into uncontrollable demons. Always love it where we touch base with characters from other series and we do this with Rafael and Kaliya here as they assess the threat to the vampires. This is a story full of intrigue and politics which has Alexius and Everley working overtime to work out who is sending her threatening emails. The way the story is building it leaves us with questions for the next book, how is her uncle involved and what did Jacob know! Can’t wait to find out what happens next, will we find out who is threatening her?
Some notes I kept while reading - Mistress Aelia of Rome and her two sons, Lucas & Maxwell (older). Third to arrive - Kamose, Master of Egypt. Wife Nailah and daughter, Isis. 1st to arrive - Jamal, Master of Rabat - Morocco - Ramman (flirt) and Samas, Middle East, 2nd to arrive - Conall, Master of London - Caturix, Master of Berlin with two advisors Dago & Sucaria - Gisela, Vienna - Dames & Ivanna, Prague - Theron, Master of Athens with Solon (brother) and offspring Emulia and Kallias Lucas, Samas, Jamal, Caturix, Nailah 😭 and Kallias 🙄 died. Got to see Kaliya and Raphael, still not reading that series. Apparently, Alexius is a berserker, his eyes transform similar to a cambion 🤔 and Everly settled him, curious and curiouser. But of course we can assume why. Everly was a scrappy one in this one, we only got to know who orchestrated Jacob’s death but not his other accomplices. Gah, the emails continued 🙄 Book 4 was supposed to come out April 2023 but not a peep. Ms. Banet noted she had a difficult 2022 so maybe that continued. May her issues resolve, life, right?!
This book was fine. I feel like it promised a little more than it delivered, in terms of plot development. And in terms of... relationship development. Like... the expectations for what would be happening in this book vs. what actually happened in this book equals a bit of disappointment.
I don't know how to do this review without spoilers. So, broad strokes only, the synopsis tells us they are going to this party to learn stuff about what they are already investigating. They should have stayed home. I am not sure there was much point to any of it. And the only thing that meant anything in their personal development, to me, was the fact that Everly likes watching vampire shows and he doesn't, but he watches them with her anyway. That was kind of a cute interaction. But otherwise, they are some weird combination of employer/employee and roommates that sometimes look up and think they might be friends. It's... a weird dynamic. Maybe that sorts itself out later, but for now, awkward af.
Everly blew off an anonymous note that read like a threat; Alexius accepts an invitation to a conclave of ancient vampires. Another note – this one clearly a threat, arrives and the pair believe it’s likely an ancient sent it. Everly accompanies Alexius for safety’s sake and the plan is they’ll identify the note writer while looking further into Jacob’s murder.
In the quirky mix of ancient and elder vampires, Everly notes how many frenemies give Alexius and the others a wide berth. In the unfriendly atmosphere and treated as an oddity, Everly receives job offers while two ancients suddenly act out of character, leading to a killing spree, Everly comes up with a dangerous but workable plan.
When the dust clears, several ancient and elder vampires are dead, Everly and Alexius have their hands full after being put in charge of investigating the specifics of how it all happened. Luckily, Everly has old and new skills in her bag of tricks to complement Alexius’ long years of investigation skills as cameos and mentions of Everly’s sister series pop up. Rating: 4.25stars
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
I'm enjoying this series more as it progresses, book 1 I rated a 3*.
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Everly and Alexius are attending a gathering hosted by Isaiah which he holds twice a year and to which most of the most ancient vampires attend. Everly is extremely nervous about attending the minimum age of the other attendees is 2000+ and here she.is not even a year old. But attend they must the mysterious enemy behind Jacobs murder will be there and whoever it is they have been sending Everly threatening emails. The.pair think they have prepared for all eventualities but then something happens that no one could have predicted, the situation is much more dangerous than they could ever have imagined and everyone is at risk. This series just keeps on getting better and better. The character of Isaiah is a side character from the Jacky Leon and Kaliya Sahini series. He is one of the highlights in these books, while the relationship which is building between Everly and Alexius is sweet to behold.
This series keeps getting better each book. If you have read other series by K. N. Banet you probably know she has at least one book where there is a gathering of sorts and we get to meet other supernaturals of the species and learn a lot of new information about the past of our main characters. This is the gathering book for Every and it is great. One of my favorites so far. We get to ser Everly interact with some of the oldest vampires in the world and it helps the reader see how Alexius is really treated by fellow vampires. There are some sweet almost cute glimpses at Every and Alexius’ life and working dynamics in this book which is also full of intense and dangerous moments for some of our favorite vampires. I am really looking forward to reading the next book in this series. Once again K. N Banet has brought us a book I know I will read again.
Love this series! My favorite out of all set in this world. Because I enjoy it so much I have to give some feedback here. The amount of simple grammatical errors really added up and distracted me from the story. There were sentences with words clearly missing or incorrect usage of tense. But nothing that can't be pretty easily updated.
Also have to say the story felt a little contained, almost like a novella? It felt like it sometimes lacked depth in comparison to the first two. In some areas the dialogue between Alexius and Everly fell a little flat, they needed a little tension in some areas although I love to see them progressing so far :) Love me an Alexis POV!
I'm giving the story 4 stars and taking off a half point for the editing stuff. Can't wait for the next book and will happily keep reading!
Alexius is definitely my favorite leading male character in the whole tribunal universe, and honestly wish we had even more chapters from his perspective. I felt as though slowly but surely Everly is coming out of her shell. I loved this story and it obviously left me wanting more, because I felt it was just the first half of a full book (even though it’s just one of many in the series). I can’t wait to see the plot progress and to see the relationship start moving in a faster pace. I would have liked to have known more about the ancients and guests at that gathering and had more in-depth looks into their lives. Not to give anything away but the protagonist in this novel… I had to look up through search to even figure out who they were, and when they even entered the scene. I liked the book a lot but felt rather rushed.
This is book #3 in the Everly Abbott series. I enjoyed the read and continued growth of the main characters. Definitely worth the read👏🏻
Everly Abbott is a newly created vampire, considered an orphan because her sire is dead. An ancient vampire named Alexius is teaching her how to survive in her new world.
When they pair are invited to a gathering of ancient vampires, they cannot miss the opportunity. This could be their chance to find out who killed Jacob, Everly’s prior employer and Alexius’ only son.
Someone is threatening Everly and probably played a role in the whole Alaska fiasco. What is their goal? Did they have something to do with Jacob’s death? Can Everly & Alexius survive the schemes and politics at play and find out the truth?
As always, I get sucked into K.N. Banet's many series, book by book. After finishing this one, I'm going back to reread the Jackie Leon series as the newest book will be released in a few of days.
I'm not the biggest fan of vampires as I prefer the "moon cursed" more. But I sure do enjoy this series. I seriously hope that Isaiah will find happiness again and that these 2 introverted heroes will pull their heads out of you know where and realize their feelings for each.
This is not a HEA, but it's so worth the delay in waiting for each new book, regardless of which series Banet is working on at the time.
Btw, I hardly EVER write reviews. This book deserved one!
This was pretty solid. I still don't care about the characters as much I care about the characters in other series within this same world. However, the chemistry between the characters (even on a platonic front) was better and more interesting than the problems I had with the previous installment. I thought the plot was more interesting this time as well. However, I could tell I didn't love the previous books much because I barely remembered some the complexities of the world, so it made a few details hard to follow. But the plot kept me pretty well hooked.
As for any future installments in this series, I am open to reading but not especially driven to hunt down the next one.
I normally compare Everly to Banet's other lead characters in the other series. This is the first book of Everly's where I felt she could now hold her own. I normally read these books immediately when published but held off on this one as I didn't want to be disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised that it was such a wonderful thought out book. I felt there was substantial character building with enough momentum in the story line. I think Everly might be a new favourite reread.
I have enjoyed every book this author has written and this latest book is no exception The dynamic between Everly & Alexius is so refreshing, a lovely change from the love at first sight thing that happens in this genre of stories more often than not. We can see it simmering under the surface but is isn't the main storyline which I'm enjoying very much. My advice as always is to start with the first book in this series as they follow on from each other and follow a timeline so your enjoyment will be greatly enhanced. Enjoy 😉
I love every series that is part of this Tribunal World. They are interesting and keep you wanting more! Now, for Everly and her story, it is wonderful watching her navigate this world as a new vampire. I'm also enjoying the dynamics with her and A 😉, they make a fantastic team now we just have to wait for him to figure out that he actually likes her more than he thinks! So many questions left unanswered and I am not so patiently waiting for the next adventure. Happy reading everyone
