Dragon in the Dark, a Kindred Tales novel by Evangeline Anderson, is set in the Monstrum Mother Ship. In it you’ll meet another type of Monstrum, a Dragon. Dra’vik lives on the Dark Side of the Monstrum Mother Ship, the section where the Monstrum live who are so large and powerful humans seeing them would be frightened. He is nine feet tall with horns and scales and has been “dream sharing” with Dr. Iyanna Washington, a phenomena he blames the botanist for. Dr. Iyanna Washington, the botanist, has come to the Monstrum ship to study the alien plants. Although she is tall for a human woman and has the shape of a curvy elite, her unique powers are only beginning to manifest on the ship.
Iyanna is sent a guide to show her around the ship’s Light Side to see some of the plants she will be studying, and then he tells her he is taking her to see the Dark Side’s plants. Accidentally she gets separated from the guide and is forced to walk through that side by herself. Finally she meets Dra’vik, who she has seen only faintly. But when she does, she is not frightened at all by either his size or appearance.
When they are asked to go on a mission to another planet to retrieve plants, they agree. These same plants on the Monstrum ship are dying and must be saved. But on this planet, trouble begins. Iyanna’s life is in danger and the Dragon Monstrum must save her, if he can.
Ms. Anderson’s fertile imagination again creates a new life form from the Monstrum universe. These tales are quickly becoming some of my favorites. They do remind me of the problems we face today when mixing cultures. The evil of greed will always be with us, but in this novel it presents itself in unexpected plot twists. Just when I thought at last there would be smooth sailing, the face of greed changes everything. Unlike some authors’ take on that ancient evil, Ms. Anderson makes it a part of her plot in such a believable way that the reader easily accepts it.
Ms. Anderson does well with her steamy romance scenes as well as causing angst as only she can. Even if you’ve never read any of her other Monstrum novels, Dragon in the Dark is a great place to start!.
