The Jack Reilly Adventures is a new series for me. And I like it. A lot.
Jack is a former Special Forces soldier and he still have the skills that he honed over the years. And it’s a good thing he does, because on a trip to a museum he is kidnapped by some ruthless Nazis.
They are searching for a famous treasure that is lost to history. The leader believes Jack can help them find the treasure.
But does Jack turns out to be more a hindrance than a helper.
Jack finds himself in a situation that he his kidnapped and used as a pawn in the search to finish the undiscovered nazi train. It’s a fast paced short story ... little over 100 pages that gives you a good intro into Matt James writing.
“The Forgotten Fortune” is a poorly written book filled with typos and poorly constructed sentences. The protagonist is laughable and reminds me of a cartoon character. What else should I say?
I really had a hard time getting into this. The prologue which should have hooked me, didn’t. I never really felt to close to the characters. The action was good and carried me through to the end, but I don’t imagine I will continue the series.
I really enjoyed this fast paced story. It's very well written and I found the characters work well and are easily imaginable. The descriptions of the underground stations and caves make you feel as if you are there. This review is based on an audiobook I received for free from the author and wanted to give an honest review. I found it easy to listen too, the narrator has a nice clear voice and helps to bring this story to life. Great book, definitely going to read/listen to more from Matt James.
Review update: I have now listened to the audiobook and I found this brings this book to life even better than reading it, the narrator I feel is exceptional, he has a clear voice and his vocal expressions really are the best. I recommend adding this audiobook to your list. I received this audiobook for free from the author and wanted to give an honest opinion.
I enjoyed this book, actually more than I thought I would. This was the first book in a series by an author I’ve never read…I’m now moving on to book 2.
The book, as stated in “Amazon’s Book Details” is listed as “Historical, Action Fiction” and it lives up to the claim. It’s also a relatively short read at around 170-180 pages. Pages that held my interest from page one on.
My actual rating is 4.5 Stars, and I can honestly recommend it, especially if, as a reader, you enjoyed the work of JC Ryan’s “Rex Dalton Series”, or, Steve Berry’s “Knight Templars Series”.
Matthew Crow is one of my favourite narrators and this was a fun listen, yes it is absurd at times but sometimes you just need a fun listen which this was.
Just really enjoyed listening to it.
The ending set up great for the next stage, cant wait.
Good story but writing needs to be honed a lot more.
The idea behind the story was good but the writing needs to be honed quite a bit. I'm not trying to be negative to the author, as I'm sure writing a book is not an easy task, but he needs a better editor and a bit more writing development. It was difficult to stick with but I followed through because I wanted to see where it would lead as it was a good story line.
This is a nonstop action adventure, the first is the Jack Reilly series by this author. Jack Reilly is an ex-special forces soldier for the U.S. Military. Currently he is a game warden in Yellowstone National Park. This plotline can best be summed up as a mix of some Indiana Jones, National Treasure and Die Hard 3, with a Vengeance. The fortune that was forgotten, or rather abandoned, was by the NAZIs at the end of World War II. Then add in some Knights of the Templar history and an even bigger fortune is involved. Jack, reluctantly participates in the discover of this hidden treasure. Then it is nonstop action as Jack defies death with narrow escapes, several of which are highly improbable as fortuitous events pop up at just the right time to save his bacon. However, this is an action story; so, logic and probabilities be dammed, just enjoy it.
Mosul, Iraq 2016. Successful mission ends on a disturbing note.
Wyoming, present day. Former Special Force, Jack Reilly is now a Yellowstone National Park ranger. He and his partner Lakoya Native Tatanka Durham are searching for a missing sightseer and run into a bear.
After, on a much-needed vacation, Jack visits Auschwitz in Poland where his grandmother had been as a child and runs into trouble needing his former skills.
I love the tunnels that Jack has to go through. Very original. But with all that moisture the books would be moldy.
Footnote: 1) Editing issues. ‘Rouse’ is to hurry something along. ‘Ruse’ is to trick somebody. Also several time words were misspelled. Such as: sut instead of but.
Fave scenes: the pepper spray, the spiral stairs, the helpful guards and taunting Emma.
I brought The Forgotten Fortune with me on vacation. Read some on the plane. And then read some each morning with my coffee before everyone else woke up!
What a way to start each day. Explosive action from start to finish.
I am loving Jack Reilly. The Forgotten Fortune has Reilly caught in the middle of a treasure hunt. Hitler's fortune is buried beneath Auschwitz. A fortune in gold. With hostages to think of, Reilly proves his worth to a militant-style group leading the expedition.
Little by little, Reilly unravels their plan, taking the enemy out one by one . . .
Like I said, non-stop action! Great characters. Loved it! On to book #2 in the series!
I'm an alt history nut and this is something quick to scratch a little itch. It's a very, very simple story that skimps on most details but the bare bones to get the story along, but it's still pretty enjoyable. The mc makes obviously stupid decisions to advance the plot that don't really seem to fit thr characterization the author gives him. For instance, the mc has no problem killing 8-12 of the nameless nazi cannon fodder, but comes up with excuses not to kill the named nazi characters. Seems pretty plot armory. Other than that though, enjoyable read.
I will say that I listen to it on audible and the narrator was not good. I mean he wasn't given much to work with. It just wasn't a interesting history and no point at all. The dialog or lack there of was just cringy. He tried to make him sound like Deadpool or a buddy action comedy with no one to riff off of just wasn't good. The treasure and archeological find was just like uh, no traps no puzzles just here it is under ground bad guys take.
Indiana Jones or Cotton Malone it is not, needs more work and more adventure. Just killing the bad guys and stopping them does not make for any interesting book, that is more a spy thriller.
Matt James gives us another great character to like in Jack Reilly. Jack visits the concentration camp his grandmother was kept, while there it's taken over by treasure hunters who have a book that could lead to the gold train. Jack must outwit the group and along the way finds more than he thought possible. I look forward to more of his adventures. I recommend Matt James to everyone.
Mr. James has written quite the page turning novel! The pace is Fast and Furious; the difficulties facing the hero are Indiana Jones-like; a willingness to suspend practical reason will definitely add to the reader's enjoyment of this book! The story itself, the historical setting, and Mr. James's ability to write page-turning action sequences are the factors that kept me determined to finish! I will definitely read another of his books!
If you are looking for an action story then you have found it. Its starts and very rarely gives up until the final pages. Jack Reilly is the good guy and he has to defeat a group of modern day Nazis from finding the fabled "Gold Train". Lots of twist and unexpected surprises. A good first book and heres hoping that the next is as good if not better
Wow.,.I never heard of Matt James & Jack Reilly, but I will read the books. Hopefully there a lot of books. This story took twists & turns that were unexpected. It was excited & Jack came out standing, I even read the spoiler of Jack nemesis! I cannot to wait for book 2 in the series. Kudos to Mr. James!
Author is idiot. He didn’t give a damn about history, even if it’s a adventure novel, you can’t say that us and uk soldiers free Auschwitz’s. Russians did it! Templar stronghold under nazi death camp. It’s like very poor remake of National Treasure 2. And however, the hero is rather stupid at times. Bad plot, bad writing.
This book reads as though the author dashed it off in a few hours. The protagonist is totally over the top and all of the characters are weakly written. The story was fairly fast paced so I gave it two stars. If you are stuck in an airport and bored out of your mind this would not be a bad choice to read. If you are looking for something with any depth whatsoever this is not the book for you.
This book is full of fast moving action - ready for theaters! The characters are well thought out and well formed. The plot is exciting and flows well. And, the book it is well written. This a fun read that you will not want to put down! I look forward to more of this series.
What an amazing story! Whether pure fiction or not!!!
When Jack Reilly learns that his Jewish German Grandmother has died, the last thing he expected to do was visit Auschwitz where she met her English husband who helped liberate the death camp!!!
Jack Reily is amazing. No matter what is thrown at him he succeeds. It is exciting and a quick read. The story is about finding a lost treasure that the Nazis placed under ground. I enjoyed the book.
The story started slow but picked up. Jack Reilly a one man army and wrecking crew. If you like buried treasure, the knights Templar, and Hitler's gold train and lots of action this a story for you!
Good. A gripping story well woven though the bits about nazi history and treasure seems a bit exaggerated and Our hero is invincible like James Bond. Still it's a interesting read
