Rate this book
Orphaned at a really young age, Eden Ward has been dealing with tragedy ever since she remembers herself. Her life is unbearable under the roof of her exploitative uncle, who maltreats her and forces her into endless hours of work. Fate will be kind to her for once, when a charming stranger shows up at her workshop looking for one of her embroidered bonnets and, as the prince of a forgotten tale, offers her a chance to be happy.

Will Eden find the courage to break free from her chains and follow her heart?

Adam Barber has abandoned any hope of finding true love since his wealthy family has been in too many instances the reason for a lady to approach him. Fate, however, proved him wrong as, while in Chicago, he meets a young woman, Eden, who is unlike anyone he’s met before. The more he gets to know her, the more he is drawn to her, pleasantly surprised by their honest connection. She is like a caged songbird and all he can think of is how to set her free…

Will his feelings be strong enough to rock her world and help her crush the walls that threaten to keep her from happiness?

Eden longs to move on to a brighter future with Adam, but her uncle is surely not ready to let her go, putting insurmountable challenges in their way… Will their tale come to a bitter end or will they manage to escape, rejoicing at yet another Easter miracle?

A good storyline, with some suspense involved. A bit plodding in parts. Many typos and grammar errors plus a paragraph and a clause that make no sense at all - even though I have taught 4th and 6th grade language arts, plus I'm a retired RN, and thus should be able to decipher almost anything, those 2 spots left me scratching my head. I have no words. I did make notes if the author wants to see what the proofreaders let slip through.
The story starts like so many do - a girl, orphaned young, taken in by someone where half or both members of the couple aren't very vested in the orphan. In this case, Eden's mother's sister and the sister's husband adopt Eden when both her parents are killed in an accident, but the uncle isn't vested in the child...until she starts making him money. An odd marriage. No school for the girl - she was homeschooled, essentially - supposedly due to the distance from the house to the school. No school = no opportunties to make friends. Her aunt was quite good at sewing, esp decorative work, and the girl took delight in learning. Her uncle was a traveling salesman, gone for weeks at a time. When he was on his way home, she and her aunt bustled about making the house spotless and cooking for him. Life was even more subdued when he was at home. The only 2 things the aunt stood up for herself about were first, she would celebrate Easter and get involved with the church, end of story. Second, her needlework was done for herself, her family, and friends, and she would not make things for him to sell. Even on their rare trips out of the house, they ended up walking around a park and going straight home, even when the uncle wasn't there. Any interest she showed in a friend resulted in their immediate isolation. Any time her uncle got upset - which was any time his fault-finding gaze lit on something about which he could make a fuss - he yelled, threw things around, and in general had a tantrum...but he was much larger and stronger than they, and they kowtowed to his whims lest he start hurting them, relieved when he once again left.
Then, as often happens in these books, the aunt dies. The uncle blames the girl and forces her to make embroidered hankies, bonnets, and whatnot, in the quantity he demands. He then goes out and sells them What started as a byline to other items he sold soon becomes the only items he sells, and Eden is a virtual prisoner in the sewing room, laboring long hours to produce the quantity her uncle demands, lest his anger boil over from throwing things to hitting her. She must account for every minute she spends away from sewing, even to replenish supplies and foodstuffs, and do chores like housework and laundry, it seems.
Adam is the youngest of 3 brothers and has a younger sister, the baby of the family. He lives on a large ranch in Texas, but since his uncle Reed, visiting from Chicago, gave him a whittling knife and instructions to make some items when he was 9, he has known he wanted to work with wood. His uncle takes him on as apprentice, and has now told him he is good enough to have his own furniture shop. Reed encourages Adam to look around, to take a break. He decides to see if he can recall the section of town where the man had been selling bonnets like the one he had bought for his mom a few years back. He locates the place, but not seeing the man, Adam checks with the florist who tells him the man only sells what his niece sews and tells him how to get to their house.
So he and Eden meet, and become friends quickly. When Adam learns how she lives, he tells her she should be paid for her work, that she is an adult and can make her own decisions. and offers to take her with him to Texas, where she can sell what she makes at the Easter fair in their town to help her establish her own business. She decides he's right. She packs as he advises, and he picks her and her items up and they go to Texas, where she meets his family. They're well off but down to earth. They put her in the guest room and soon Adam's little sister Isa is making her feel welcome.
But Eden lives in dear of how her uncle will react. That he will be angry, at least initially, she has no doubt, but he had never wanted his wife to take Eden in, so surely he will let her go...but she still fears he may not. Meanwhile, the 2 of them are falling for each other more each day but neither will say anything. As they prepare for the Easter fair, will it all be smooth sailing, will romance finally blossom, or will her fears come true?
The various twists and turns receive less attention than some more mundane parts that are worthy of mention but are also in need of a lot less attention. The pacing, the errors (esp. the senseless bits), a few too many tropes, are the reason this otherwise decent storyline didn't get a higher rating. Also, it claims to be a Christian novel, but doesn't mention any deep spiritual commitment from any of the characters, only that the Lord should be their go-to option in bad tomes as well as good, church attendance, but nothing about the significance of the Bible in their spiritual lives, nor any mention of why Easter is special to Christians. Easter is treated like any other holiday, secular or religious, when it is the single most important celebration, because it celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus, and thus the sealing of the salvation of all who believe in the atoning work of Jesus as a remedy for their sin, repent, and confess that Jesus is Lord. Without Easter, Jesus is just another itinerant rabbi and prophet. In a book purporting to be about an Easter miracle, and a Christian novel, the omission of this information is very troubling.

Eden was only 7 years old when her parents were killed in an accident. Her mother's sister in Chicago adopted and raised her, but the Uncle is a real piece of work. After her Aunt dies, Eden suffers under the hands of her Uncle. He requires her to create products for him to sell, does not let her leave the house or talk to anyone, she must work tirelessly, and he does not give her a penny for her efforts. Eden doesn't even know what life is supposed to look like, but she is starting to think about escaping. The Barber family live in Texas, they are very wealthy and have a large ranch. Adam Barber is visiting Chicago to learn furniture building from his uncle. Adam had previously bought his other a bonnet that she loves, and he seeks another one. He finds the person who made the bonnet, Eden, and quickly sees that she is in trouble. Adam helps her escape to Texas with him. Carol Colyer is very good at character building, and rebuilding. This is an excellent book, and really shows what happens when a person is kept captive for such a long time, how their mind works and what they may be thinking. See what happens, and there is a lot, in this riveting story.

This western historical novel tells the story of Eden and Adam. Eden is a young woman, orphaned at childhood and raised by her aunt and uncle.
When her aunt died, Edens uncle used her skills at sewing and needlework to make him money. He is a cruel man, demanding she work all the time and so Eden lives a very trapped life.
Adam is a young man visiting his uncle in Chicago. When his path crosses with Edens he can see how unhappy she is and a friendship forms.
Adam helps Eden escape her cruel uncle and the pair set off to Adam's hometown in Texas where Eden wants to make a new life.

It's a sweet story and a clean romance. If you like this time period and genre I think you'll enjoy it. It is written well and has likable characters.

I don't read alot of books in this genre but it's always nice when I do read something like this as it makes me want to read more. It's the first time I've read something by this author so I will check out more of her books in the future as I liked this one.

Great Read

A beautiful heart warming story about a young girl orphaned at a tender age. However, her Aunt Alice adopted her against her husband’s wishes as he didn’t like kids. Alice loved Eden and taught her the craft of sewing, and embroidery, plus homeschooling her. After the aunt died the uncle kept Eden at home sewing and doing beautiful artistry with her embroidery for him to sell. She had to work endless hours plus cook and keep house for no pay except food and a home. Adam was in Chicago with his uncle and wanted to buy another of the beautiful bonnets that Aunt Alice had made and sold him. When he found Eden and saw her kindness and pain in her eyes he kept coming back and took her back to Texas with him. The uncle found her and kidnapped her to go back to Chicago. Adam along with his family and the sheriff set out to rescue Eden and fireworks flew with fists and guns. A wonderful exciting read.

Love and Forced Bondage

It begins with Eden being forced to work excessively for her Uncle so he could earn all the rewards from her labors. After working endlessly long hours she was also forbidden to leave the house to visit friends or go to church. Fortunately Adam arrived in Chicago to study furniture mKing under his uncle and while there he promised his mother to purchase another bonnet from a salesman she had purchased. Previously made one from. Hence he met Eden and became endorsed with her and offered to help her escape her work conditions for Texas where she could create and keep the money for herself from what she made. Her uncle is not willing to lose his work horse so he comes to Texas to drag her back with him.

Not just a love story

Such a poignant story of a young woman realizing she's being taken advantage of, verbally and emotionally abused, and being presented with the chance to escape that horrible life. Seeing her self esteem slowly grow and blossom as she realizes her old life was in no way normal was so refreshing. I love that the author chose to have this happen with friends that truly care for her, so she realizes her true worth as a person, and not just because she looks to her rescuer for her worth.
Precious love story, with an unexpected just-right-amount of suspense.

A new life for Eden?
This was a lovely story for the Eastern season it was true gift from the author. There are a few editing problems but that really does not take away from the story. This book had a good mix of characters some you will like others not so much but they made the story. Eden and Adam were great together working so hard to overcome the challenges they face one being Uncle Charlie. I enjoyed the book and I think it is one you will enjoy.

Lovely story! Eden has lived a heartbreaking, isolated life. When Adam came to her door to buy a bonnet for his mother, she is delighted to have someone to speak with, even though that was prohibited. The remainder of the story was full of adjustments, self-discovery, danger, and love. Book got my interest early and kept it until the end. Wonderful story of growth, love, and acceptance.

Received ARC and this is my honest review.

This story is scary on so many levels, but it all comes together at the culmination of Easter. There's a big bad uncle and a warm welcoming family. A woman who's uncle is keeping her prisoner and making her do slave labor. Charming Adam comes along and helps Eden to freedom. The climax is exciting, but the uncle's character is a little over the top. The world may be a little crazy, but Eden's uncle tops the list.

Such a delightful book, immediately capturing one’s heart and causing one to desperately hope for a happily ever after. But could Eden come out from under her uncle’s control and give in to the desire to make her own way? Was Adam the answer to her dreams? Or would her uncle prevent her happiness once and for all?

very sweet story

I enjoyed reading this sweet story. Very good story with nice twists .
The only bad thing is this book needed an editor or maybe just someone to read it for the errors, it’s distracting for myself to read a story and finding so many mistakes.
Once again good book good story.

Simple and sweet, young people maturing

Eden and Adam are hard-working young people, each with a dream of selling the beautiful, creative products they make. Each takes unplanned steps until they choose to do something risky that they feel is right for them. How they come to love each other and build their lives develops naturally and believably.

Carol Colyer gives us a good story with interesting characters, humor, twists, turns and the expected happily ever after. I enjoyed this book and would have given it 5 stars except for the number of editing, primarily homonym, errors. They do slow the progression. That said, I will look forward to her next story. She always keeps me reading.

Adam & Eden

A really good story about an adopted girl living in New York with her uncle after her aunt dies. He totally dominates her time, won’t let her go out in town or have any friends because that would hinder how many sewn goods she could make for him to sell. That is, until Adam shows up.
