Like the first book, the end took another crazy twist. Admittedly, I kind of saw it coming, but I have to applaud Holloway on his absolute brashness and gall.

This time around, we have two POVs, so please don’t read on if you haven’t finished book one!

Kehlem returns to Mercy for Eva and they flee together along with Scarpi the black cat.
On the run, they discover a civil war brewing - a power struggle between the empire and the monks.

Broch is free, mad, and seeking blood - travelling in the shadows to kill every last monk across the Vin empire.

Kehlem is definitely struggling with twisted guilt and shame, unable to let himself feel happy without feeling ashamed for being able to live a better life.

Guilty warmth ran through me as her words washed through my soul. I gulped them down, her words a vital panacea, my only reason to exist that wasn't born out of spite, or revenge or hatred. To love. To live. I'd loved her unspoken for so long. To hear those words from her lips, it was golden sunshine bursting through storm laden clouds.

I enjoyed seeing his relationship develop with Evan. Despite fearing for her safety, he is able to recognise that she is her own woman and deserves to be responsible for taking her own risks and making her own decisions.
Sometimes in fantasy, the protagonist never lets their love get involved and is adamant about keeping them sheltered, separate, and safe.

Like I mentioned, the end takes it up another notch and brings in more world-building elements. I saw it coming from the start, but I do think this series is great for transitioning from a lighter coming of age story to a darker war-torn one.

High three stars! 🌟

Holloway is on fire in this second instalment in The Aspect series, which is dark and character-driven fantasy at its best!

While I really enjoyed the more intimate and small scope in book 1, The Soul’s Aspect, I think it was absolutely incredible to see the world just blown wide open in this sequel. The stakes felt so much higher and I loved digging deeper into the blood-soaked history, devastating magic, and tense political landscape of this world.

Kehlem also continues to be a fascinating protagonist and I really appreciate that we get to see him struggle hard with his morality in this instalment. Sometimes I did feel like Kehlem came across as a little too innocent considering all that’s happened to him, but overall his character development is very intriguing and satisyfing to follow.
Also, it was heartwarming to see that he still has some very supportive people around him who he can lean on. The romances and friendships are so well-written in this series!

The new POV did admittedly hold my interest a lot more than Kehlem’s storyline, though, because holy smokes that was DARK. I loved the emotional turmoil in this perspective and the final few chapters were absolutely gut wrenching in the best way possible.

This was a great sequel that doesn’t fall victim to second-book syndrome at all, and I had a blast with it from start to finish! Though, I am now very nervous to see just how much emotional damage I will suffer from the finale, because things are looking dire.

If you want a fast-paced and emotionally engaging dark fantasy with complex character dynamics and super fascinating yet devastating magic, then you have to check out The Aspect series. Highly recommend!

Mark Holloway continues to amaze!!! A dark and entrancing story of two countries locked in a struggle for control! Compelling broken characters. It’s just So darn good. Highly recommend this sequel to The souls Aspect.

As this series progresses it’s hard to imagine how we got here. Where these characters started at in book 1 is totally
different not just in tone but structure as well. Great character growth all around.

The Soul’s Instruments brings together brutality, madness, friendship, and love, crafting a compelling sequel. The Aspect Series by Mark Holloway is a self-published fantasy that leans into darker themes and has been a fast-paced adventure thus far.

Story Overview:

Kehlem the Butcher. Hero. Villain. A pale ghost that haunts the empire, or righteous revenant of Casere. Titles thrust upon him that he had no desire to bear, charged by the Aspect itself to end the Vin Empire. And yet his only true desire is to get to Mercy before the empire, to salvage his only chance at redemption.

But change is coming. He can feel it in the crushing weight of his waking nightmares. See it in the uprisings in the empire. Hear it in the hushed rumours of assassinations.

The Aspect demands retribution. Balance. Where there was Order, now comes Chaos.

Review:

With how The Soul’s Aspect (book one) left off, I was eager to jump into this sequel. Let me say, Mark Holloway did not disappoint and avoided the pitfalls of the sequel slump. I was hooked from the first chapter! The Soul’s Instruments balanced great character work/arcs, pacing, action, twists, along with endearing and gripping scenes. I can’t forget to mention the elements of horror that gave me chills.

We also get more exploration of the characters and their relationships. Khelem in particular gets great development as we see him mature from the boy we first met. There’s also the return of some familiar faces, each getting their own voice and arc. I loved getting to know these characters better and seeing how their roles impacted the plot.

In terms of worldbuilding, the characters travel more while two countries struggle for control. The magic system also gets further exploration adding depth to both areas. Aside from the character arcs, the developments to the magic system were compelling and impacted the story in a meaningful way. Making it a standout aspect to the book.

Now it’s always a joy to see an author’s writing skills improve and this was no exception. Mark Holloway also managed to pull off a duality in the role that love plays and the extents someone will go for those they cherish.

From the atrocities of war, religious conflicts, PTSD representation, the impacts of vengeance and insanity, this was packed with moments of surprise, intense battles, and satisfying payoffs.

By the time I finished the book, I needed book 3 in my hands. A fantastic page turner and series I’d recommend for anyone looking for their next epic read.

The Soul’s Aspect (novel #1) ended with such a grim and painful last chapter that I had to jump into the sequel ASAP. This novel picks up right where the prequel left off with some horrifying twist to keep the tensions high. I was flipping through the pages like my hair was on fire just to see what Mark Holloway had in store and he crushed my heart once again. A world about to fall into Chaos and Kehlem needs to make sure he protects the people he loves. This will be a spoiler free review but I will be discussing scenes from the previous novel.

Kehlem is a killer and hunted by the Empire for the terrible deeds he has done. Now referred to as The Butcher, he has fled to the one person who will care for him as much as he cares for her, Eva. Now on the run from the hunters, they will need to gather their wits and keep a low profile as the Empire is dealing with a civil war. The Seers in the Empire are being assassinated and nobody knows what to do. Kehlem tells Eva that he is not 100% human and was born from The Aspect itself, which is why he is able to use it to in such harrowing ways. Eva and Kehlem have a plan to discover more knowledge but they may be heading into an ambush. Meanwhile, a man once thought to be dead is seeking vengeance on those who took away the love of his life. With Aspect magic and rune’s as his aid, Broch has escaped his prison and the pain that was once inflicted on him will be felt by the world. Even for his best friend who will pay dearly for leaving him in his tortured cell.

Like the previous novel this is a first person POV story but we now get to see chapters from Broch’s perspective and let me tell you right now they are DARK!!!!! Mark took a very nasty turn with the tone and execution of this book and all the better as far as I concerned. If you read the first book and like myself wanted to see more of Eva, then I’m pleased to say that your wish has been granted. Eva is a very key part of this story and she will not be a disappointment. The Empire will do horrible things to keep order around the towns and cities but Kehlem has seen what this Empire is capable of. Leeching Aspect users so they can create their own is a practice that must be put to a halt one way or another.

I’m not going to spoil how this book ends but the pieces are in place for the concluding volume. Finishing this series will be paramount for me as I’m hoping it will be for you as well.

Cheers!

The Soul's Instruments is a fantastic sequel to The Soul's Aspect, and I am now thoroughly invested in this world and story.

Picking up right from the thrilling ending of the first book, this book felt more structured and the writing felt a lot more refined. I felt the first book was more character focused, and in this one, the plot is a driving factor. I loved every moment of it, and ended up finishing the book in just a day and a half.

Once again, it's difficult to talk about the plot without getting into spoilers. This story has more of an adventurous feel than the first book, and through the journey, the world expands right infront of us. This book is a lot darker than the first book, as murder and the impacts of war are now fully on the table.

As the world falls into chaos, I find that Holloway balances this perfectly with how the characters develop. We now have multiple point of views, following both Kehlem and Broch for most of the story. We do also get a third perspective towards the end, which I feel will continue in the third book. The characters in this series feel so real, and their character progressions/developments are so well done. With Kehlem, we see him struggling with having to do terrible things for the greater good. With Broch, due to the trauma he has endured, he has fully embraced terrible actions. Both of these characters are easy to cheer for, and I loved following them both.

One of my favorite aspects of the first story was how Holloway wrote friendships. I find friendships are such an under utilized relationship in fantasy, and the friendships in book 1 were truly beautiful. While we don't get these friendships in book 2, Holloway introduces some really strong, well written women into this book, which again, is nice to see in fantasy. While headstrong at times, these characters are also easy to love and have important roles in the story.

My only complaints are that I was left unsatisfied with Broch's arc overall and some issues I feel editing could have fixed. I can't go into details without spoiling the ending, but I just wanted more from Broch's story. With Kehlem though, I was thoroughly satisfied. When it comes to the other issues, I found some randomly placed quotation marks and I felt that a lot of paragraph breaks should have been chapter breaks instead. These are all minor complaints of mine, and I loved this book overall.

I'm really looking forward to book 3!

The Souls Instrument

📚Book Review📚

How can I review a book sequel to a book that is so much different from where the series began? Each and every decision twists and turns not only the characters but shapes the world around them, not instantly, not even in the same chapter but 100’s of pages down the line?

The forethought throughout this and the initial instalment in the series, The Souls Aspect, and seamlessly extends the story and the stakes to knew heights.

The characters that were such a shining light of book one stand out brighter than before. With old faces and new littered throughout the pages you hit with nostalgia and intrigue about how and where they could each take the story.

Carrying on from the climactic end of book one Mark keeps the pacing high and forces you to keep the book in your hand. With the inability to take a breath in the story I found it impossible to put down and read 3/4 of this book in a single day.

5⭐️’s without a shadow of a doubt, I know it’ll be a wait till the 3rd instalment but it will be worth it as his writing skill seems to be increasing with every book.

This was the second instalment of Mark Holloway’s The Soul’s Aspect trilogy. The series is old school dark fantasy. It was an action fantasy with tons of twists and turns to keep the tale interesting.

The first book was a coming of age epic fantasy tale with a few dark twists at the end. That meant this book dealt with those consequences and was more focused on the impending war and the power grab by the Seer Monks.

It was a solid enough story. Like the first book things started a little slow and sluggish but the story built to an intense crescendo and ended with a bunch of intense happenings and more shock twists and turns.

This is a fairly dark fantasy series but it is balanced out by the fact that it has some likeable characters that are easy to root for.

All in all this was a solid middle book in the trilogy.

Rating: 3.5 stars.

Audio Note: This was narrated by Joel Jackson. He did OK with the audio but sounded a little lispy for my liking. I’ve gotten used to him over the course of the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this second book. I love how the characters have grown and changed. I enjoyed the world the author created. The adventure was exciting and is an excellent continuation from the first book. I have so many questions I look forward to having answered and new characters (Ban is my favorite!) that I am excited to see grow in the next book, which I hope I won’t have to wait to long for.

Highly recommend both books in the series, if you enjoy adventure, fantasy and strong characters who do amazing things.

Thank you to the author for giving me a chance to read this awesome book, for free and I am living this review voluntarily and with the hope my review encourages others to go on this adventure!

Let me start by saying I'm thinking this series may become an all-time favourite if it continues at this level 😍.

One of my favourite things about the first book was the cosy settings created so I was a little apprehensive entering this. Despite new settings and a significantly darker tone, I quickly realised that Holloway is a master wordsmith and his prose is the ultimate cosy-comfort-snuggled-in-a-blanket vibe and it beautifully binds the two books together.

Whilst his prose might be my favourite the plot is phenomenal too 👌. Being of a shorter length, not a page is wasted and I was gripped from beginning to end.

We continue to follow Kehlem who is still a teenager but is now dealing with the aftermath of book 1. My only minor irk with this book was his relationship with Eva: sometimes it read like infatuation 🤮 (this isn't helped by my general lack of interest in romance in any novel). That being said it did come across as teen love and I'm looking forward to seeing their relationship mature in future books.

Broch also received his own POV in this story which I LOVED. I think his chapters were my favourites - I can't say much as its major spoilers for book 1, but yeah. I love him. My heart breaks for him. And I want all the best things for him (will be keen to hear other thoughts on him though).

You will go through all the emotions reading this book and the last chapter will have you begging for an early release of book #3. This book, this series, is spectacular. They are amongst my favourite reads of the year and may slip into my top faves ever. So comforting, whilst being dark and action packed.

Honestly, I would recommend this series to just about anyone. The prose is some of my favourite; I adore getting lost in this world and the story is explosive and exciting. I think any reader on a fantasy journey will appreciate this book: it’s super accessible for beginners / YA readers looking for an introduction to adult fantasy, and it also plays into a lot of tropes in a charming and nostalgic way which I think is really comforting for frequent readers of the high fantasy genre.

I couldn’t honestly ask for much more in a fantasy book series and I’m pretty much begging people to go and try this series out at this point. I cannot wait to see how the story continues and I am ready to discuss this with anyone that will listen. Please, please go read this book. PLEASE!

Once again, Mark Holloway has crafted another excellent entry into his indie fantasy series, The Aspect. The Soul’s Aspect is easily one of my favourite indie fantasy books, with the sequel certainly not disappointing.

The Soul’s Instruments delve us even further into the world that Mark has created within this series. Where The Soul’s Aspect felt contained within its magical academy setting, Instruments’ is a globe trotting quest centered around dual themes of hope and revenge. We are also introduced to a second POV chapter, told from the perspective of Kehlem’s estranged close friend, Broch. Broch’s chapters are a much welcome addition as they perfectly contrast Kehlem’s whilst also touching on several similarities between the pair; detailing how raw grief can break someone and shape their future.

I wrote in my review of The Soul’s Aspect that it felt like Mark had written a love letter to beloved traditional fantasies such as The Name of the Wind and Harry Potter, only to turn things on their head and rapidly shift the tone and direction into something much darker and chaotic. The Soul’s Instruments continues that trend, only conversely this time the darkness being a lot more present, with a few bright moments of how things used to be, reflective of the narrative in its predecessor.

I also continue to be impressed by the magic system that Mark has created for this story. The Aspect is one of the most uniquely original magic systems I’ve seen in a fantasy setting, complete with so many layers of intrigue and lore - as well as steeped in science.

I am fully immersed in this setting and series, and I find myself impatiently waiting for the third book, Chaos Risen.

I implore those of you who haven’t read this series to give it a try. The pacing is excellent, the story gripping, the prose a delight, and the character work brilliant. It’s one of the best indie fantasy series out there, and Mark is an awesome guy who deserves the support.

Another jaw-dropping instalment and a great follow up to The Soul’s Aspect!

TSI continues with where the story left off, however this time there were two POV characters, both written from first person perspective 🧐 it was strange to read at the start only because I rarely ever read first person POV books, though I quickly got used to it and it really didn’t matter in the end as it says the character name at the start of each chapter anyway.

I did enjoy both pov characters, though my favourite is still Kehlem. I think he is a great character and I really fell in love with him in TSA. He continues to grow in this book, and the romance that is a large part of the story felt natural and genuine.

The magic is epic and kept me interested. The writing is very smooth and intelligent. The story broadens and becomes more about the wider world, and kehlem gets this kind of reputation similar to I’d say Arlen from Peter V Brett’s books where he is known to be kind of unstoppable.

There were some fun new characters who I enjoyed, however the direction at times felt a bit random and lacking purpose. But it all came together in the end in what, to me at least, was a completely unexpected ending and kind of a massive cliffhanger… usually that bothers me as I like conclusions, but it sets up the next book really well and I can’t wait to read it!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 rounded up

Definitely recommend this series!

This was a solid enough book, but ultimately didn’t really do much for me – there wasn’t necessarily anything wrong with it, it just failed to wow me. I left book one feeling a bit similar, but hopeful for book two with a couple of elements that intrigued me. Unfortunately, those elements didn’t really come to too much here, so although I didn’t not enjoy this second book, I can’t really say I enjoyed it either.

Wow. Genuinely one of the best sequels I’ve read. The Soul’s Instrument had me on edge the WHOLE time!
If you thought you couldn’t pinpoint who the villain is in the first book and that it had a shocking ending then you haven’t read the second book yet. (you probably haven’t since it comes out later this month).
It takes the healer turned killer concept to a broader, darker level, and honestly, throughout the book, I had no idea where anything was going. At that point I was just enjoying the dark, gorey ride.
I say gorey and dark when it’s also about grief and processing trauma, and the way the main characters’ traumas were explored was very realistic. I love how they didn’t magically disappear or just get ignored. Also there’s a chaotic hammer wielding ace side character.

This book can commit arson in front of me and I’ll agree and say it has a point. It can do no wrong.
(Oh and thanks for the arc Mark! That rhymed nicely)

“Once more, I brought a town to its knees. But this time there was no guilt. No shame. This was righteous.”

The Soul’s Instrument picks up right were we left off in The Soul’s Aspect, but this book is very different from book 1. Gone is the innocent and idyllic world of book 1, the world is on fire and chaos is ready to take over.

The pacing of this book is excellent, there is not a page wasted. We are either in a highly entertaining action scene or we are developing the story. The tension is palpable, you really don’t know what way this is going to go next. Mark effortlessly keeps adding layers upon layers to the story and in the end when we reach the peak we are left with an ending that made my jaw drop. Having read both books back to back I was upset that I didn’t have the unwritten book 3 in my hands at that moment.

Events are still shown from Kehlem’s POV and you get to see his character develop, however really early on we are also get a POV from another character and this second POV is truly fascinating as we watch them deal with the events of book 1, and watch the journey this character goes on as they descend into madness is so well done and beautifully written!

One of the strongest aspects of book 1 was that we are made to care about the characters, and that is no different here. I really couldn’t help but feel invested in this characters (both old and new faces), and whilst the low’s don’t have the same gut punch we got in book 1, I still can’t help but feel for these characters when it doesn’t go to plan.

The development of the characters feels so real and organic, throughout the book Kehlem is battling with his conscious and considering his actions and I love this. He’s been thrust into this situation and rather than just turning him into this ruthless killer you still see the human in him that’s still trying to learn and just do his best with the hand he’s been dealt.

If you’ve been following my reviews for any amount of time you know I love a strong female character and this book had two shining lights. Eva who’s character development from book 1 is fantastic and she truly deserves her on POV at some point. Ban, a new edition to the cast, I adore her! She gives me Fran (Pillar’s of Peace) vibes and I can not wait to see more from her.

I could gush about this book for hours but I can’t say more without getting into spoiler territory. If you have already read The Soul’s Aspect and enjoyed it I urge you to pick this one up and keep reading the series. It is an absolute hidden gem. If you haven’t go and pick up book 1 in time for this being released you deserve the treat that this series is.

Thank you to Mark for providing me an advanced copy of The Soul’s Instruments in exchange for an honest review. The Soul’s Instruments is due to be released on May 31st 2022, book one ‘The Soul’s Aspect’ is available worldwide on Amazon now.

The Souls Instruments - Mark Holloway

“Where God is Order, the Aspect is Chaos”

Woah dang! I can honestly say that I did not move from my chair reading the last half of this book.

We start with a bang, Kehlem and Eva trying desperately to escape the hunters. Needing to learn to trust old friends, pick up fighting skills and put together the pieces of a much bigger puzzle than they initially thought.

This story is told in two POV’s, one man’s desperate control of the Aspect, is another man’s decent into vengeance fueled madness. Each character discovering the political and religious plays afoot, in order to seek complete control of the empire.

This book blows this world wide open, where the readers got a glimpse in book one, now we have a world. A world full of sinister machinations, desperate pleas for control, and devastating secrets inside of an ancient text no one knows how to translate.

My favorite part of this book was just how much more we got to see of the Aspect. The magic of the world is fascinating. Pulling energy from surrounding sources to exist in between a physical and astral world. Learning to control it is another matter altogether. Can Kehlem find peace and become the hero he so desperately desires, or will the Butcher surface and reign supreme?

I read the author's debut (The Soul's Aspect) back in September last year. The last line of my review for that book was:
"If, as is often the case, this author improves with each book, then I for one am definitely along for the ride."
Well, let it be known I've called shotgun, am buckled up and have already picked the radio station because I'm in for the long haul.
The quality of writing is utterly immersive as is the control held over the plot, characters and world contained within. The pacing is spot on and keeps the story tight enough to rattle through the 290 pages.
Holloway has earned his place at the table and his is a voice that needs to be heard.

The tone of this book is a little darker than the first. However, Holloway still manages to bring that enchanting and exciting feel to the story. Carrying on from where we left off at the end of the souls aspect, the adventure continues. This is such a great story I can't wait to see where it goes. Take a plunge into the aspect once more and see what awaits! You will not regret it 😁

I read the first two books of Mark Holloway's The Aspect series - The Soul's Aspect and The Soul's Instrument - back to back and what an enjoyable journey it was.

A healer forced to become a killer for an empire that would grind his country to dust.
Kehlem, the sickly son of a widowed physician, has devoted his life to learning his father’s craft. Wanting to finally step out of his father’s shadow, he embarks on a project of his own, seeking out the help of Themia, the town's newly arrived Alchemist and a rare wielder of magic.
But Themia has secrets of her own, secrets carried from the heart of the empire itself, secrets that would steal Kehlem away from his home and into the empire’s Academy for magic users.
The Isale Academy beckons, but can Kehlem survive the academy and its brutal regime? And if so, what would he have to become?

Both books come in at approx. 300 pages so I decided to read book one between my TBR reads but wow, after reading this I just had to move straight onto book two. The Soul's Aspect can be described as tropey and inspired by the usual fantasy series but instead of this becoming a copycat read, Holloway spun the wheel and enticed us with his comforting and emotional efforts to make these his own.

The magic system is the particularly interesting where The Aspect involves a spiritual world full with energy that can be found everywhere. An Aspector can reach into this and harness its energy by drawing patterns. Holloway described the ability to learn this brilliantly. Magic school concepts can be done to death but Holloway thrust so much activity and friendship in between the lines whilst introducing his magical setting that this felt cosy and mysterious.

Book two has expanded upon these with its multiple POVs, female characters and story direction and Holloway has really surprised me with how complex and explosive the world has become. Character arcs can be difficult to handle, especially with a first person POV because of reliability but Holloway has shown his characters growth and ability to learn. This was a nostalgic read and I'm glad I picked these up when I did.

This is a series high up on my anticipated releases and I cannot wait to see how the story continues.

Absolutely phenomenal. Expansive, captivating and incredibly well-designed, the Soul's Instruments took what made the first book good and improved on almost every front. Seeing Kehlem's perseverance; seeing Eva's devotion; seeing Broch's complete desperation right to the very end. It was a hell of a journey, poetically written and conceptually profound - the final five chapters, and the reveal about what the Aspect really is, was something I would expect in a James Islington novel. To find it here, and to see it done so well with such a fantastic cliffhanger, is testament to the writing skill of Holloway.

Long Live Chaos indeed.

I so enjoyed the first book. This sequel expounds on the world and characters. It’s much darker. The magic system is so unique.
Kehlem is very powerful and needs to figure out how to control the Aspect so that it doesn’t control him. There’s a romance threaded throughout the story that I didn’t think would be so prevalent. But there you go.
Another POV has a few chapters and they are bold and dark. The demise into madness for this person is so tragic and sad.
The last chapters are just intense. The final book should be explosive.

I liked the first book in the series better than this one. It might be because it wasn't so dark, and there was more mystery concerning the Aspect.
The storyline here is very good, and all the characters change along the journey. For me the book didn't feel complete, I'm sure the story will continue in the next book.
I received an advanced reader copy for an honest review.

Another excellent book from Mark Holloway!
The world is fascinating, there are a great range of likeable and complex characters and the writing is perfect.
Such an enjoyable read that I can almost forgive the author for the devistation I still feel from the end of book 1...almost!
I am very glad that the story continues as I am not ready to leave this world and its characters.
Highly advise that you read this series if you haven't already.

This was a great second installment. I was especially interested in the new POV chapters for Broch (in fact the only reason this is 4 stars and not 5 is that I was more into Broch's chapters, and there were fewer of them).

This is definitely dark, and the plot goes places I didn't necessarily expect, but in a lot of ways that's making this series better for me. I'll be heading straight into book 3. Definitely need to be in the mood for dark reading if you're going to pick this up, though!
