A major new author in the Robert Goddard tradition joins HarperCollins. Mortal Remains is a brilliantly plotted story of crime and passion that unravels in the double-narratives of a woman and her recently returned ne'er-do-well brother in a large house in Oxfordshire. There are elements of crime and psychological thriller, but principally, this is just a fabulously good read that you could recommend to anybody who doesn't mind staying up all night to finish a book.
Gregory Hall lives in the famous city of Bath, founded almost 2000 years ago by the Romans, who chose the site for its hot springs. It is now the favourite destination of many contemporary visitors, for its Georgian architecture and its literary associations with Jane Austen. The highly praised author of four previous psychological thrillers, Gregory's latest novel, Hot Water, is published exclusively on Kindle. It will be of particular interest to former and intending tourists to his home city. A blackly comic murder mystery, in which a few myths about olde England are gleefully demolished, Hot Water's combination of stylish writing and dazzlingly intricate plotting will delight the discerning reader. Gregory loves his family, cats, sunshine, France, red wine and black coffee.
I was really looking forward to reading this. There were many times where I had to discern who the speaker was, since there was first person perspective in here. It's a nice mystery, but probably won't read any more. However, other readers may enjoy this.
Only two stars for this book. It looked promising. I tried to follow its escalation although it was taking a while. But the solution was far too complicated. Several crimes combined so as to influence the life of two children that grew up in the English province. The mother was planning to kill the father, or was it his lover? Was the latter Polish, French or what? Wait there is also a twin! Oh drugs and art fraud and theft as well. And more corpses come up. It is endless. A soup of crimes in one book.
