Good story

Coming out of Trial of the Amazons. I have to admit. I was disappointed.the overall story felt all over the place, and it's conclusion while satisfactory felt very underwhelming. This book made up for that. We finally leaned about Queen Nubia'spast life. And adventures in Man's world, and are offered a glimpse intoo the future of her reign. If I had to nitpick one thing, It would be the the shifting art. I would have loved just 9ne artist in the book.

For as much as I love it, I guess Nubia: Real One has no bearing on any continuity outside of its own, huh?

I'm not holding this issue responsible for that disconnect, but--having read Real One so recently (and so enthusiastically)--it's very hard for me to hold both of these visions of Nubia in my head at once.

Real One Nubia wouldn't need to have American racism explained to her (and frankly I'm a little surprised that this Nubia is so unfamiliar), but even if I'm accounting for my unfair difficulties as described above…

I've been reading a lot of Nubia comics this week (Nubia & the Amazons #1-6 and all of the Trial of the Amazons collection, in addition to Real One).

Outside of the non-canonical one who I liked so much, I just don't feel like I know this character very well at all. She's been more role than person, and she doesn't seem to even be getting tested in interesting ways in her role.

Even her relationship with Io--which is fascinating--just seems like it's kind of… there.

I mention all of this because I've just wanted a lot more from this character (in this continuity), especially when I got so much from her when I read Real One.

Anyway, I find this issue so disorienting and I don't know what it's supposed to be accomplishing other than making this character feel that much more amorphous and defined merely by her role. The audience is jerked around in space and time, which just adds to my frustration that we never spend time with Nubia and her thoughts and her abilities in any direct way. I really, really hope that the series that follows this is a lot more eager to engage with Nubia as a person, because I know how good that can be from Real One (which is obviously a VERY different thing, but it showed Nubia as a person rather than a title and that's all I'm really asking for).

I like that this was a well rounded collection of snippets from Nubia's life - before the Amazons, her first encounters with Man's world and a glimpse at a futuristic 'off-world' story. It definitely seems to have been designed as a taster of what to expect from the upcoming Nubia series, and if we get some Guardians of the Galaxy type shenanigans with Amazons then I'm definitely in.

The only downside for me was the artwork, which switched dramatically in style between the different parts, and a lot of it really wasn't my cup of tea. And while some of the art was lovely, none of it lived up to that gorgeous cover.

nubia's cinderella panel sequence was beautiful 🤯. and her coronation outfit from the final page is my favorite of hers, with her gigantic lion breastplate armor a close second. the shifting art was a bit jarring, while i understood the necessity as a storytelling device to differentiate btw timelines some of the art was very poor 😕.

Lovely comic by the ubertalented Williams whose work I like very much. I sure hope she gets her Vixen ongoing or whatever else she'd love with Next Level at some point. The art changes are utilized very well.
