Before he was resuscitated, Kasper Kloven fell in love with a ghost. Electric blue eyes and a touch so cold it felt hot, Oliver, the ghost boy, never left Kasper’s mind. Though his search for ghosts in the years following proved fruitless, it wasn’t until Kasper accidentally stepped out in front of a car did he learn that he had been right. Ghosts were real, and they had been watching. Not only that, but they had been moved by his belief in them, and had chosen him to be their king. Atop his new throne, Kasper is given the opportunity to compete for one higher, that of the Almighty Ghost King. To earn that crown he must impress the kingdom, outshine the other candidates, and court the ghost factions. He’s competing with one goal in mind, to create a realm that embodies what he knows to be ghosts are good. With Oliver by his side, eternity before him, and trials to win, Kasper has but one his heart. Can Kasper withstand the weight of his crown once he learns what it really means to become the Ghost King?

What a wonderful start to the series!

Valentyne took the time to create a world of ghosts we could all relate to. As you read it becomes a fun little game to think about the people we know in our lives and the factions we would place them in based on their lives and personalities.

In this book, we follow the first-person perspective of Kasper where we learn about his fascination with ghosts and his journey through the afterlife after his untimely accident. Though the author's writing style may not be for everyone, I truly enjoy how easily the words paint a picture in my mind as if I were a fly on the wall through the entire story. Valentyne allows for character development while also not revealing too much too quickly. We experience romance, paranormal encounters, inter/intrapersonal character conflict, and so much more that allow for varying pace and complex story structure. As the reader, you not only get a look into our main character Kasper's life, but you also get a unique take on ghosts and the different factions that exist beyond the land of the living. This book is also very inclusive and does include LGBT+ characters.

One thing to keep in mind when reading this book is that it is self-published. You may encounter the occasional typo. It is not a common occurrence throughout the book, but it does happen from time to time.

Since reading the first book, I have started the second book in the series. I love how much the second book connects back to this one. There are parts in the next book that make you revisit and essentially relive events from the first book.
