Fireblood Dragon #9

Fire in Her Dreams

Rate this book
Jenny’s dreams have turned to nightmares.

Every night, her thoughts are filled with evil. Something is reaching out…and she’s not so sure she wants to reach back. That is, until someone new appears in her dreams. Someone who protects her, comforts her, and thinks of Jenny as his mate. Imaginary friends aren’t real, but Jenny likes to pretend, anyhow.

Then, one day, one of the mindless dragons guarding the fort awakens…and Jenny realizes that the friend from her dreams isn’t a figment of her imagination. He’s a dragon.

And he’s looking to claim his female.

Ruby Dixon is an author of Science Fiction Romance. She likes fated mates, baby-filled epilogues, and cinnamon roll heroes. She also likes to write biographies of herself in the third person, because it feels more important that way.

Humans make passes at dragons that wear glasses!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💙💚🖤💜❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📔
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎🌍
Character development: 🐲☺️🐲😍🐲

The heroine: Jenny - she is in Azar’s underwear program at Fort Dallas. The program is to lure Dragons to Fort Dallas by using girls scent (via their used underwear). Jenny knows that much but not the reasons why. She and the other girls do this in exchange for daily meals and protection, so they didn’t have to sell their bodies for food.

The Hero: Mhal - though the majority of the Dragons that came through the rift went crazy as soon as they hit the atmosphere of earth, Mhal was caught by the Azar, the Salorian who took over his mind. Mhal and four other dragons sit atop Fort Dallas protecting it. They all have grey eyes and are like mind controlled zombies.

The Story: Jenny has terrible nightmares filled with bugs and worms which give her an evil vibe. Until one night when another presence comes into her dream, banishing the evil. She can’t wait to go to sleep after that, to talk to Mhal in her dreams. Meanwhile things are changing in the after. Creepy bugs are found that are as big as large dogs and Azar knows that someone is messing with one of his dragons.

The book is told in dual points of view and narrated by Jillian Macie and Jeremy York. The narration is dual narration and I like both of these narrators. Jillian has a lot of emotion in her voice and which works well for this series and Jeremy has a deep gravely voice that is great in any romance. I like Duet narration best but Dual narration comes in second and these narrators did a terrific job.

The ongoing storyline with Azar is getting better as this series goes on. The huge unnatural bugs are from the rift and are evil and some of the residents of the fort that are starving are cooking and eating them. Jenny tells them not to, but they are hungry and have no other food and the bugs have meat that can be made into stew. Gross but they figure at least they now have full bellies.

I hope no one asks what I've done all week because then I'd have to tell them I've read all nine books in this series about dragon smut and I don't know how I feel about being quite so honest.

It's like I'm determined to read every book Ruby Dixon has ever written. As of right this moment I've read 62 Ruby Dixon books, according to my Goodreads. And that's just this year! To be fair, her books are fairly short most within the 200-page range. But still!

I had never heard of Ruby Dixon before June of this year. It's November. WTF. I think I have a problem. Ruby alone has written more than half of the books I've read all year. She's got 62/117 so far! She's also responsible for me not paying attention at work because I'm reading on my phone.

*sigh*

Anyway. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

"I see you've come to your senses and decided to do things my way," he declares. "Good."
"Wrong," I say immediately. "I've come back with a list of demands."

This reads more like a prequel to the Azar book (no complaints here) but it was also kinda odd with the whole dream contact thing and ummm bangarang time in public?? No thanks. Even if the world is abandoned and mostly-empty GET A ROOM.

3.5 stars -- I thought the plot conceit of having Jenny & Mhal first connect in her dreams was a fun move for the series, and I'm really excited to see the macro plot coming to a boil. This is a satisfying entry and I'm so hype for Azar & Melina's book as the finale!

3.75 Estrellas!!

***Possible Spoilers***

As much as I love Ruby and this series, sadly this one was a bit of a dud for me. Nothing of much significance happens and the book worked more as a tease for the upcoming final showdown-Azar’s book. I forgot how much of a slime ball Azar, the Salorian, was and his treatment of everyone outside of himself and his mate is pretty disgusting, he’s just such an asshole to be frank. Poor Jenny in this book has no idea her dream man is a dragon and Azar basically forces their bonding which I found rather annoying. The two mostly spend their time having sex or in her case trying to remind Mhal who she is to him. The darkness is strong in him.
We get a bunch of giant bugs which are new to the series at least as far as I can remember. They don’t appear dangerous, just absolutely gross and coming through the rift to spy, sent by some unseen baddie on the other side. It’s clear whoever is behind the bugs terrifies Azar. It’s why he mind controls dragons around his fort for protection and why he struggles so hard with letting Mhal go to be with Jenny. At the same time he oddly wants as many women mated and pregnant by a dragon as it’s the future generation, these children who will be able to somehow either mend the rift or help fight this unseen being. As much as I hate Azar I really am looking forward to his story. Though I wish his mate was a stronger woman, sure she puts her foot down here and there but personally she seems just as complicit in his shit as he is. Can’t wait to see how Ruby handles his story and how/if he’ll actually be redeemable.

Es sumamente diferente a los otros de la serie y no en el mal sentido, se sintió más completo y que todo cerró muy bien.

La pareja se me hace adorable y el final hizo que mi corazón estallara de amor. 💗

Ruby !! Hot damn girl you’re talented !! I was hooked from page one !! You guys know I love drama & shenanigans out the wazooo and this was filled with it !! Every part of this book was filled with soo much drama I screamed out loud at the desk !! You know when I’m screaming at the desk it’s a banger !!

This is book 9 in the FireBlood Dragon series and things are getting worse in Fort Dallas. The rift as you all know is now getting new evil visitors that are poisoning the earth and snatching up dreams.

The story starts with Jenny who is constantly having these horrible nightmares about bugs. The dreams are wicked and her sleep is lacking. However, since Jenny is in the panty program she isn’t worried where her next meal is coming from. Like many girls in the program she is there because she’s a virgin and she doesn’t want to sell herself to survive in New Dallas.

Things are stirring up and now a savior has entered her dreams his name is Mahl. Atleast that’s what he remembers his name as because the madness and Azar have taken his mind since he came in from the rift. But now he’s here to save his mate!!

I can’t say much else or I will spill all the tea lol!! I hope you give this series a try if you haven’t already.

Happy reading everyone!!!

Love how the author weaves personality into every dragon. Her ingenuity is commendable. They way she adds all these elements to the characters. No two are the same. I'm in awe of her imagination. Love how she is building this world. Hopefully there will be many more books in the series.

Quick(ish) Review

A decent entry to the Fire in my Blood series, it follows the pattern of the first few books with less lulls. There’s no big moment, more of a subtle build towards the series finale and I’m not mad at it. This is more for Ruby Rixon fans and series completists.

Jenny and Mhal’s story was nice because it felt a little different than the other ones in the series. Mhal was being kept as a prisoner of sorts, his mind was being controlled and overpowered and he was acting as guard over one of the human hives. But when he realizes his mate, Jenny, is near, Mhal starts to fight against the mind control so he can connect with Jenny instead. I liked seeing their relationship progress, they are sort of both forced together quickly and have to figure out one another as they go. Mhal whenever in battle form forgets everything that has already happened with Jenny and she has to remind him each time what’s going on and who she is. We also get to see a drakoni need glasses and be very into the babies of the group (which honestly they are all a little bit baby-obsessed for reasons). Super sweet romance and I can’t wait to see what happens for the plot in the final book next! It’s been a fun few days binging this series!

50 first dates... with a dragon

Enjoyed this edition and how it moved the over arching plot along quite a bit. Still not sure about the Salorian guy... seems like a bad guy to me but I’m very curious about what Ruby is going to do with him going forward. Mhal and Jenny’s romance was pretty hot and easy... except that whole memory thing. The only drama was really where to make their home and deciding to go back to the fort... there wasn’t much drama here. More of a nice easy romance with lots of *ahem*. 😉

Another good one

I hate to see the series coming to a close! Azar is still mysterious, but hopefully all will be revealed in his book.

Jenny and Mhal were just perfect for each other. I loved the vulnerability the author gave him; as someone else who suffers with it, it was good for a chuckle.

Full of smexy times and sweetness, this was a wonderful book that I would definitely read again.

Replay: As I've noted in previous reviews, RD works hard to make each entry in this series unique. A zombie dragon and an unsuspecting woman? As the middle book in the concluding trilogy, a bit more time is spent on that plot-arc. And for the sexy bits, both MCs are virgins, though they figure out things pretty quickly.

This suffers a bit from being the middle book, but it plays out well, and everything is aligned for the big finale.

All things considered, it might be a little odd to say I've missed these arrogant, possessive dragons and the messed up world they've unintentionally terrorized, but BOY do I like dipping my toes back into this world. These dragons are a hot mess of epic proportions and they caused a lot of damage when they came through the rift. They're arrogant and dangerous and when they find their special someone things don't always snap into place (well, the physical side snaps, but the mental clarity isn't always quite as quick to come back), but they are FUN to read about.

So. This time we have Mhal and Jenny. He's one of Azar's zombie dragons and she's a recruit into the panty program. Her distress over her weird dreams lets him break free of Azar's hold and she's entirely sure she's made him up right up until he really awakens and things go sideways. Unlike some of the earlier couples, at least Jenny has a friend who can provide a little guidance. She and Mhal still have to figure A LOT of things out, but at least she has some idea what to expect.

Which isn't to say things are easy. Mhal is mentally pretty messed up and only his instinctive desire to protect his mate keeps him from causing Jenny any damage. Like all the other dragons, he's gloriously arrogant, too. Jenny has to coax him around to understanding that doing things the drakoni way isn't going to work for her since she's very human. No lie, I dig when these dragons get to experience kissing and whatnot for the first time. They're just so darn enthusiastic about it once they try it out.

We get answers toward where all this is heading and, well, more Azar. Which is unfortunate. The Azar part, not the answers. That dude is...I don't know. I honestly can't wait to see how he fixes things with his lady and figures out that just because you can doesn't mean you should. His story should be pretty darn interesting, one way or another.

Bottom line: We got lots of arrogant dragon, plenty of steamy kisses, and a sliver of hope that the light at the end of the tunnel will lead to better things for all of the couples we've met so far. *thumbs up*

Very well written as usual. There are lots of steamy scenes, with insta love/attraction for our dragon shifter and his human Jenny, living in a world destroyed by fire and chaos. This is the second last book in the series, so a few months to wait for the conclusion - according to the author, near the end of 2021. That, I hope, will be a great book and I'm looking forward to it. There's not much action in this book re the rift or any sort of danger, but the story has been moved along nicely enough so that we know freedom from the damage the rift has caused to humanity, might not be far away. Happiness for all our couple is on the horizon. 😍 If you want to read this series my advice is to start at the beginning so it makes perfect sense. All books are available in KU.

Five stars

I liked the confused, arrogant Mhal and poor Jenny who just had to figure out what to do based on rants and half info from others. There were a few parts that cracked me up and a few that had me shaking my head, and overall it was very cute. I loved all the babies and seeing little peeks of the older ones as well as a few newborns. I don't want this series to end!

This was probably my least favorite out of the series just because the male MC was quite arrogant and full of himself, and the female MC wasn’t my favorite either. But now I’m on to the last one and I’m very excited!

Fire in Her Dreams is the 9th installment of the “Fireblood Dragons”, which is Ruby Dixon’s post-apocalyptic dystopian erotic romance series with alien dragon-shifter heroes and human heroines. Fire In Her Eyes is the only gender-swapped exception, with a human hero and dragon-shifter heroine, although it’s one of my favorites for the sheer novelty alone (some of the books in Dixon’s long-running series suffer from repetition, particularly if the world building isn’t expanding in some way). As the penultimate book in this series, Fire in Her Dreams ties up a few narrative loose ends while introducing new elements that I assume will be part of the conclusive volume arriving later this year. I usually love it when Dixon answers questions about what’s really going on, but there were a few too many parallels to current events for me here.

The third act of Fire in Her Dreams examines individual fulfillment during a crisis versus the moral imperative of banding together to confront an existential threat. And that’s an interesting and worthwhile philosophical discussion in theory, but it also mirrors the real-world public conversations we’ve been having since February 2020 and I’m feeling worn out. The fictional plot of “we have to band together or we die” hits really differently once we’ve all lived through an event where we’ve had to band together or die, and many people have died because we didn’t band together well enough.

Then, there’s a brief reference to characters dying of a mysterious plague-like illness after their starvation drove them to eat evil insects and the scene of a boy in the hospital was just too much. In the last year and a half or so, I’ve gravitated towards books that capture the isolation, loneliness, and monotony of our current moment (Bryony and Roses, Yellow Jessamine), but parallels that are too close just suck me right out of the story I’m reading. Fire in Her Dreams felt like the latter, unfortunately.

And yet, the devoted cinnamon roll heroes in Ruby Dixon’s books always comfort me. I struggle with this character trope in contemporary or historical romance because these men feel a little too good to be true (or interesting enough to sustain a full length novel), but these alien fated mates are completely convincing. I turn to these books when I need a warm hug, and Mhal and Jenny’s love story provided that. I could’ve done with less of the “prophesied-baby-son-as-savior” Christian undertones to this one, although I can’t deny that Fire In Her Dreams was satisfying where it counted. It was steamy, sweet, and fun! Lots of romance authors try for that combination and few succeed as often as Dixon does.

Fire in Her Dreams isn’t my favorite, but it achieved what it set out to do and it was the zippy palette cleanser I needed between reading denser romances.

This is book nine in the fireblood dragon series! This is about Jenny and Mhal. Jenny is human and lived in Fort Dallas during this post-apocalyptic time period. She ends up having bad dreams that are later relieved by a mysterious man in her dreams. Mhal happens to be that man, but he is actually no man at all. He is a dragon shifter! This is the story about these two flying off together and becoming mates.

This was a fun read! Not my favorite in the series, but it was enjoyable.

I can't wait to read the next and last book in the series when it comes out! :)

TROPES: alien romance, big-city, character with glasses, dragon romance, fated mates, non-human, paranormal romance, post-apocalyptic, shifter romance.

I found this book to be very inconsistent. It's established in the story early on that Jenny cares a lot about people other than herself - she brings food to a mother and son, skipping meals for over a day. She cares about her friend Manda and the guard Daniels. She makes clothes for other people. It's her way of showing her love and care.

Also, can these motherfuckers not TALK TO EACH OTHER??!!?? So much of this book's setup could have been resolved by people just EXPLAINING the whole bonding and need for children thing - there was no reason to wait. I get that she wouldn't have told this story if Jenny knew, but that made it feel like stupid, artificial plotline when by this point (BOOK NINE), everyone knows what needs to be done, so just motherfucking TELL EVERYONE. Pick another story to tell other than "we don't tell anyone everything, we let them figure it out on their own and hope for the best" because honestly, I'm so over that.

I'm going to take a nice long break before I read this last book, because these last few have been of the shorter novella size, and I inhaled them pretty quickly, so my tolerance for stupid shit in these books right now is very low, and may have had an effect on my take on this book, so I need to stop and read a few other books before I finally finish this series.

Proceed With Caution:

This book contains mentions of rape and death.

The Basics:

Fire in Her Dreams is the second-to-last book of the Fireblood Dragon series, and yes, you need to read he previous eight books as a plot has been slowly building. We're back in Fort Dallas where Jenny is part of the "panty program" but she's about to get out. She's had a visitor in her dreams and it turns out that he's one of the dragons perched on top of the fort.

My Thoughts:

Fire in Her Dreams isn't one of my favorites from the series, but it is enjoyable. I continue to be impressed that the author can come up with new twists on the same plot-points, i.e. the drakoni losing their minds. All of them have had some form of memory loss, but it's all subtly different. Mhal's is completely different though, but not in an unbelievable way. It makes perfect sense and fits with what we know of them. It had the potential to be annoyingly repetitive, but it's not.

Fire in Her Dreams is also pretty low drama. Jenny and Mhal are quite sweet and domestic when they leave the fort. Their new home was a fun location! A bit impractical, but they're making it work! I also enjoyed reading about Jenny's creations. I think she's the first heroine with an actual usable skill and hobby.

What I didn't love about Fire in Her Dreams was the whole "you have to have babies to save the world!" plot-thread. We already learned that the half-drakoni babies are special, and that's totally cool. They should be special. But to straight up make having babies a requirement or else you're an awful, selfish person who's going to doom the world is not fun. This cool dragon dystopia series has now become a dragon breeder series. At least it's the end.

I did enjoy Fire in Her Dreams overall. It definitely set things up for Azar's redemption and the possible end of the world. Or not. I think the world will be saved, but how? What is actually coming out of The Rift?! What do babies have to do with it? I guess we'll find out soon.

Jenny + Mhal

The drakoni series has gotten better and better with each book, and this one is by far my favorite one yet in the series! So sad that there is only one more book left in this series!

Jenny who we met in the last book is part of the panty program and is having nightmares about large bugs and a heavy sense of dread and evil. Until a golden man appears in her dreams pushing the darkness away. Oh, and this golden man... he may be one of the scary dragons that is guarding the fort with the creepy grey eyes.

OH MHAL. He is arrogant but loveable. And he wears glasses. And melts into a huge puddle for babies. I love this book so much. I could seriously just reread it right now I loved it so much. And all the babies!

Loved the set up that we've been leading to with the rift and the evil and the babies and the salorian. This final book is going to be so epic, so excited to read about a bad guy hero from Ruby!

The Fireblood Dragon series was so incredible! It’s gritty, adventurous, full of survival, but also spicy and sweet. I think it was a great dystopian romance series! I give it overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!

I really liked how these books intertwined with one another. Their plots overlap in a way that made it hard to put down the series. Plus there’s the overarching plot with the main villain. Speaking of the villain… his book is the final one… and his redemption arc is the best one I’ve ever read. I hated him throughout the books and then by the end of the series I was actually really surprised by him and his actions. (Proving once again how amazing of a writer Ruby is!)

Additionally, I loved how each couple was a little different. Each Drakoni was mindless and violent until they scented their mates. I loved how each woman embraced the power they had over their dragon. These women went from barely surviving and fearful of the world to having a dragon as not only a doting mate, but a fearsome protector. Each partner complimented one another. Through their love they were able to find freedom and happiness in a broken world. Everyone gets their HEA!

Also… does Drakoni sound familiar?! If you’ve read Ruby’s Icehome series… specifically Veronica’s Dragon… you might recognize some overlap. (I love that little Easter egg!)
