La serie segue le vicende dei due amici d'infanzia Yutaka Hoshino e Makoto Tsukimoto, detto Smile, entrambi giocatori di ping pong. Peko è forte e odia perdere, Smile invece, altrettanto forte, appare freddo, timido e taciturno. Un gioco incontrano uno studente cinese in Giappone per un periodo di studio, e la sconfitta che Peko subisce cambia per sempre l'approccio dei due verso lo sport.

Although Taiyo Matsumoto desired a career as a professional soccerplayer at first, he eventually chose an artistic profession. He gained his first success through the Comic Open contest, held by the magazine Comic Morning, which allowed him to make his professional debut. He started out with 'Straight', a comic about basketball players. Sports remain his main influence in his next comic, 'Zéro', a story about a boxer.
In 1993 Matsumoto started the 'Tekkonkinkurito' trilogy in Big Spirits magazine, which was even adapted to a theatre play. He continued his comics exploits with several short stories for the Comic Aré magazine, which are collected in the book 'Nihon no Kyodai'. Again for Big Spirits, Taiyo Matsumoto started the series 'Ping Pong' in 1996. 'Number Five' followed in 2001, published by Shogakukan.

"Peco" and "Smile" are two friends connected since first grade school by a passion: the ping pong. Smiling and light-hearted the first, serious and detached the second (hence the nickname "smile" by contrast), their friendship goes beyond their opposed characters, or perhaps is actually based on this strong complementarity. The inter-school competition of ping pong is about to begin, and the two friends will participate...
Starting from peculiarities of the two protagonists, the author use the game of opposites to describe their stories along one year of high school, the workouts and the sweat, victories and defeats, the growth. The hierarchies change several times, but the goals of the two growing boys do not change. We talk about sport, matches and competitions, but only as a way to profoundly describe the rise and fall, therefore neither more nor less than talking about life.Spiritual. Vote: 8
"Peco" e "Smile" sono due amici legati fin dalle scuole elementari da una passione: il ping pong. Sorridente e spensierato il primo, serioso e distaccato il secondo (da cui il soprannome "smile" per contrasto), la loro amicizia va al di là dei loro caratteri contrapposti, anzi forse si basa proprio su questa estrema complementarità. Il campionato interscolastico di ping pong sta per iniziare, ed i due amici parteciperanno entrambi...
Partendo dalle peculiarità dei due protagonisti, l'autore sfrutta il gioco degli opposti per descriverne le vicende che coprono poco più di un anno di liceo, gli allenamenti, il sudore, le vittorie e le sconfitte, la crescita. Cambiano più volte le gerarchie, ma non cambiano gli obiettivi dei due ragazzini che crescono. Si parla di sport, di partite e di competizioni, ma solo come mezzo per descrivere profondamente l'ascesa e la caduta, quindi per parlare ne più ne meno che della vita.Spirituale. Voto: 8

El dibujo tiene un ritmo fascinante. Consigue transmitir la velocidad cuando hay juegos de ping-pong, pero también busca la expresión de serenidad en los momentos que lo requieren. Me fascinaron sobre todo los primeros planos. Cada rostro encierra un enigma y la esperanza de conversación, que es lo más hermoso de este manga: toda la obra, todos sus volúmenes, son varias conversaciones, en el juego o con palabras. Y cada conversación es una esperanza cifrada.

Yaklaşık 6 yıl önce anime izlemeye başladım. Üst üste çok kaliteli seriler bitirdikçe daha fazlasına merakım da arttı. Aradan yıllar geçti ve izlediğim serilerin kalite olarak düştüğünün farkına vardım. Arada yine kaliteli seriler izlediğim oluyordu fakat eskisi gibi hissetmiyordum. Böylelikle zamanla animelerden soğudum. Eskiden haftada bir anime bitirirken artık ayda bir animeyi zor bitiriyordum. İşte tam bu sıralarda Ping Pong The Animation ile karşılaştım. Ard arda bölümlerini izleyerek bu 11 bölümlük enfes yapımı birkaç günde bitirdim. İşte o zaman animelere olan sevgim tekrar yükseldi.
Aradan çok zaman geçti fakat hep içimde kaldı Ping Pong'un mangasını okumak, nihayet bitirdim ve o güzel günleri tekrardan andım. Peki animesini başyapıt olarak gören ben, mangasını ne kadar iyi buldum?
Çok iyi fakat animesi kadar değil. Bu yüzden bu bir karşılaştırma yazısı olacak.
Ping Pong'un mangası 1996 yılında Matsumoto Taiyou tarafından yazılıp-çizildi ve 5 cilt sürdü. 2014 yılında ise Yuasa Masaaki tarafından 11 bölüm şeklinde animeye uyarlanarak bir başyapıt olarak karşımıza çıktı. Peki neden animeye başyapıt derken mangada bunu söyleyemiyorum? Bu biraz uzun bir yazı olacak.
Öncelikle animenin ve manganın hikâye olarak bir farklılık taşımadığını, hatta üslüp olarak bile nerdeyse aynı olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Ama ne yazık ki yönetmenin o ufak dokunuşları mangada yok. Animede önemsizmiş gibi gözüken karakterinde güzel bir yeri, ufak bir mimiğinde akılda kalıcı yanı bir olabiliyordu ama ne yazık ki mangada bunlar yok. Bu demek değil ki manga etkileyici değil, her ikisi de etkileyici ama anime çok daha fazla.
Peki Ping Pong ne anlatıyor? Anlatması zor. Çünkü bu hikâye en çok yazardan, bir o kadar da bizden bir parça içeriyor. Hiç de gerçek hayatta göremeyeceğimiz tipleri görmüyoruz bu hikâyede. Tüm karakterler gerçek hayatta denk gelebileceğimiz insanlar. Çalışsa başarır diyeceğimiz karakter de var, amacı büyük olan ama hiçbir gayreti olmayan karakterde. Başkasının izinden giden de var, nasıl yaşaması gerektiğini hiç bilmeyende. Her birinin yaşadıkları bize resmen hayat dersi veriyor. İşte Ping Pong'un bu konuda bu kadar kaliteli olmasının en büyük sebebi
Matsumoto Taiyou'nun hikâyeyi yazarken direk kendi hayatından esinlenmiş olması. Yazarın hangi karakter olduğunu görmek hiç zor değil. Bu yüzden, örneğin amaca giden yolda başarısızlığı gördüğümüzde aktarılan hisler son derece gerçekçi.
Anime de etkileyiciliği yine bir adım öne taşıyan şey müziklerdi. Müziklerin sahneyle uyumu, karakterlerin ruhsal durumunu yansıtabilmesi gibi önemli bir yeri vardı ve bunu çok iyi yapıyordu. Hala ara ara müziklerini açıp dinlediğim oluyor ve müzikleri hala değerlerinden bir gram kaybetmedi.
Gelelim manganın da animenin de en çok eleştirilen yanı olan çizimlerine. Çizimlerinin herkese hitap etmediği bir gerçek. Ayrıca ilk bakışta özensizce yapılmış gibi bir izlenim de oluşturabilir. Zayıf olduğunu katılıyorum ama özensizce olduğunu kesinlikle düşünmüyorum. Çünkü Ping Pong'un hikâyeyi anlatırken kullandığı üslup bu. Bu üsluba kalın ve düz çizgiler gitmezdi. Zaten bunu anlayabilmek için ilk önce okumak veya izlemek gerek. Diğer yandan zayıf olduğuna katılma sebebim ise şu; orantısızlığın bir kaç kez rahatsız ettiği oluyor. Örneğin bir gözün aşağıda diğer gözün yukarıda olması gibi.
Sonuç olarak animeyi mangaya tercih ederim. Ping Pong yapımıyla da ilk defa karşılaşacak birisine ilk olarak animeyi öneririm. Yuasa Masaaki gerçekten çok iyi bir yönetmen ve bu uyarlamayla da kendisini bir kez daha kanıtlamış.

Appearances are not as they seem. Blood tastes like iron after all. Whilst this series looks to be a generic sports manga at a quick glance of the cover and title, simple is the last word I'd use to describe this manga. The focus of Ping Pong is not the sport itself, the rules aren't even explained, but the focus lies on characters involved, and character design and development is where I believe Taiyo Matsumoto excelled in this series.
Ping Pong is a story of coming of age, and conflict. Between hard work and natural talent, between preconceived notions and reality, between your past and your future, and between friends.
This 5 volume set has had a far longer lasting impact on me than most others 5 times its length. You'll finish this series with a sense of emotional satisfaction at the journey you've witnessed, and you'll understand what I mean when I say this is something special.

Finalmente un Matsumoto chiaro, nella narrazione e nel disegno, senza perdere lo stile che lo contraddistingue, la trama cresce al procedere della storia, e così fanno i disegni.
Ho apprezzato tutto il tono dell'opera, uno degli spokon più realistici letti, nei sentimenti e bella crescita, con un protagonista non delineato in un singolo personaggio e con un finale che fa da ciliegina sulla torta dell'intera opera
Non faccio mistero di non essere un fan di Matsumoto, ma dobbiamo dare a Cesare quel che è di Cesare.
In pochissime pagine una storia che si conclude degnamente e questo non può che essere un plus in un mondo dove si rincorrono serie infinite che non trasmettono la metà di questa di quello che ti lascia questa storia.

Nice interplay between the leading characters, Peko and Smile are different yet move in parallel in a literal yin-yang spiral (it's in the story's logo after all). The game of Ping Pong as a stage for different personalities, intertwined goals and needs between players, coaches, spectators. The actual match sketches are proof of Matsumoto knowing what he's drawing about; a fine line between impressionistic blurs and hard black/white realism.

Il sangue ha il sapore del ferro, ma per saperlo devi prima scoprirlo. Devi prima vivere, imparare a vivere. Sorridi quando c'è da sorridere, piangi quando c'è da piangere. Vivi. E se proprio non riesci da solo, un eroe compare. E un eroe vince sempre. Capolavoro.
