Mary Jayne Baker grew up in rural West Yorkshire, right in the heart of Brontë country... and she's still there. After graduating from Durham University with a degree in English Literature, she dallied with living in cities including London, Nottingham and Cambridge, but eventually came back with her own romantic hero in tow to her beloved Dales, where she first started telling stories about heroines with flaws and the men who love them.
Mary Jayne also writes uplifting, feelgood romances under the pen name Lisa Swift.
This was a rather refreshing Christmas read in the fact that it doesn’t take place just in December. The ‘Big Man’ features throughout the story and I enjoyed how Baker steps away from the chaotic festivities that are common in similar books of this genre.
That being said, I did think the first half of the novel was the most enjoyable, where we see grotto wars take place between Elodie and Callum. These two have been warring since they were children and now, as adults, they are fighting for the Christmas grotto domination. Whilst Callum has inherited a very successful department store and has all the wealth he can dream of, Elodie’s independent toy shop struggles. It is a story we see so often in the high streets, which is why I wanted Elodie to succeed in everything she did. For the family business, Martin’s toy shop is renowned for its Santa’s grotto and it’s where Elodie can count on the store making money. However, needing to replace her grandfather brings headaches of its own, especially when her newest recruit seems to be the opposite of a traditional Father Christmas…
Although Nick Winter has all the festive facts anyone could ever need, Elodie takes a dislike to him. He is young, slender and well, not like her grandfather! I liked watching Nick convince Elodie that Christmas can be a time for happiness and as he grows into his role in Elodie’s Christmas grotto, I enjoyed seeing the atmosphere lift. Nick puts his heart and soul into his job and Baker adds in the theme of poverty and being a carer with Nick’s character.
This book isn’t just the love and laughter that is usually associated with Christmas, but loss and life. The realities of poverty are portrayed by Nick and how he has to work two jobs to try and keep afloat with the bills. Its a stark contrast with Callum, and when a relationship develops between the childhood enemies, you can see why Nick feels he has nothing new to offer.
The second half of the novel shows Elodie stepping out of her comfort zone and growing as a character. She is completely different to when readers first meet her and I was interested to see her business plan succeed. However, I think it would have been better if more attention was placed on this, especially as this book is a Christmas read. More grotto stories would have added the festive magic of this plot.
I could not foresee how Elodie would find her happy ever after and this intrigue kept me reading until the very end. I definitely thought the first half of the novel was stronger, particularly reading the banter between Elodie, Callum and Nick. On the other hand, the second half of the story shows the characters developing in a new way, giving the plot a different direction.
This was an enjoyable story and provoked many festive memories for myself. I particularly loved how Baker was able to bring in Bluey – it seems to be a cartoon I cannot escape from! It’s a lovely story to read that has more than just Christmas to it, with plenty of additional Santas as well.
With thanks to Aria Fiction and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I saw this cover and immediately had to read it. So cute!
Martin's Toy Kingdom is known for its impeccable Santa, aka Elodie Martin's grandfather—but still recovering from a stroke, he is no longer able to complete the task. Elodie is now on a desperate search for a replacement, hoping to keep business away from Callum Ashley, owner of Ashley's Department Store. It was a wonderfully festive conflict, I must say!
Enters Nick Winter, a struggling actor and the Toy Kingdom's last hope for a successful holiday season. This started off on such a high note! I loved the combination of feuding stores with a love triangle. Nick and Callum couldn't be more opposite, making it so interesting to see who would win over Elodie—the new best friend or the insufferable rival.
While I liked these characters overall, I wasn't overly sold on the romance(s). Secretly pining for Elodie, Nick was so sweet. I adored their movie marathons! But I didn't feel a spark beyond friendship. And with Callum, his attraction toward Elodie came across more like a quest he wanted to conquer.
I wasn't completely satisfied with how this one ended, unfortunately.
Mary Jayne Baker does it again with a cute seasonal story. Girl hates Christmas and Boy 1 shows her how fun Christmas could be whilst Boy 2 is a very old frenemy, who suddenly decides that this girl is exactly what she needs. Which one will she choose?
Throw into the mix an aging Santa who needs to pass the mantle of his Santa suit on to a new Santa, and you have the makings of a very lovely, seasonal story.
This was a very cute Christmas romance. The witty banter between Elodie and Nick made me laugh out loud! I absolutely love Christmas, so I was able to connect with Nick and all his jolly, even if I don’t necessarily agree with his Christmas movie choices! Some relationships feel a little forced, and the book felt a little drawn out at times, BUT I really loved it, especially the ending. If you like an easy to read, heartwarming, make you smile romance, then this is a must read for you!
I’m a sucker for Christmas so when I saw this title I just had to go for it. I’m so thrilled Head of Zeus accepted my request because it turned out to be such a light and lovely read.
Elodie being a little bit Grinchy about Christmas, I wasn’t sure I would connect with her character but oh boy I was so wrong! The story got me wrapped up from the very first page. The witty banter was brilliant. Nick definitely earned a special place in my reader heart. And well, Callum. Does anyone where can I get myself one? Asking for a friend!
The store descriptions where amazing and they really made me feel as if I was there. 10/10 Christmas vibes!
There were a few things here and there that made the story feel a little bit forced or unnatural but that didn’t stop me from enjoying the book.
The love triangle isn’t my favorite trope but I really enjoyed it here. I even ended up feeling sorry for one of the 3 the characters involved.
This is a cute Christmas romance that I enjoyed. Elodie Martin owns a toy store that’s famous for their Santa grotto. She hasn’t liked Christmas since her parents died. Santa is her grandfather, Jim, and generations of children sat on his lap. Unfortunately, he suffers a stroke so she has to find a new Santa. A young, good looking guy named Nick Winter gets the position. Jim trains him on how to be Santa Claus, and he’s very popular.
Martin’s grotto competes with Ashley’s, owned by Callum Ashley. The stores have competed for years. He and Elodie are frenimies since childhood, but this year he’s determined to get Elodie to fall in love with him.
Nick has fallen for Elodie too, but can’t find a way to tell her. Which guy is the right one for her?
I liked the characters and the plot, it will put you in a Christmas frame of mind!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed as in this review are completely my own.
First reaction: I wonder why this received poor ratings? Let me check it out

What I liked: it's a Christmas book, it was kinda touching knowing that Eldodie and her Pop took on Nick and treated him like family. I also liked how Callum lied to El for the greater good...
What I didn't like: I'm going to get hate for this but, Nick being Bi? Ahem sorry...Santa being Bi? Seriously 😒. Can we PLEASE for one MINUTE stop with forcing this down our throats. For heavens sake..It's supposed to be a Christmas book. Santa, Old Saint Nick, St Nicholas was never Bi or lgbtq plus or whatever. For God's sake. Since this author did THAT 😒 you wonder why there was NO love connection between him and El. Callum was a jerk. There is NO love here. It's flat. And I didn't find anything funny. Rom com? WHERE?
Conclusion: where's the room com? Where's the love romance? What romance? Now I know why this book has a 3.7 it deserves the 3.7 and that's why I will NEVER read anything but 4 from now on..
This was COMPELLING. I chose this one as one of my first festive reads of the season, and with Christmas approaching, it was perfect. Christmas Toy shops, Santa wars, workshops and budding romances.
All of the characters were great and the different elements of the plot all added for such an additive read. The book went so fast!
We have Nick Winter (an aptly named Christmas Santa in training) auditioning for the role in a toy shop run by Elodie, who is a self confessed bah humbug. For an added sense of drama, there’s also a rival toy shop headed by the rather hunky Callum. All a recipe for a great book!
From start to finish, I never lost my enthusiasm for it and always looked forward to returning back to it. The audiobook was fab. The narrator did such a good job at acting out and injecting the perfect amount of emotion and honestly performed it expertly!
I definitely need to check out more from this author if this one is anything to go by, really enjoyed! I am a sucker for a Christmas read.
Fun festive rom com in book form, that made me smile and has me feeling Christmassy a tad early…oh who am I trying to kid, never too early for me! Main protagonist Elodie is a strong woman but with a definite vulnerable side and I really felt for her when she lost someone she dearly loved in the book. Enjoyable quick read, savour with a mug of hot chocolate & marshmallows.
With her dad retiring there's new santa needed for the grotto introduce Nick. Elodie is sweet at times.
Callum Ashley works at a rival store and Nice referencing to current popular trends. A easy to read Romantic comedy. I felt like thier was two many stories at once for me
Mary Jayne does it again. A cute, relaxing chick lit with all the romantic feels. Sprinkle in a little bit of Christmas and you have a cosy feel-good read!
This might win the prize for most frustrating, unsatisfactory Christmas romance. Honestly...
Elodie runs a tiny independent toy store, massively popular in the run-up to Christmas because of their Santa, played by Elodie's grandfather. Callum owns the local department story and is determined to finally have the best Santa in town, especially since Elodie's grandfather has to give up playing Santa because of his health. Elodie thankfully finds out-of-work actor Nick to take over Santa duties. One not-so-friendly bet between her and Callum later, the war of the toy stores keeps ramping up. But those pesky loving feelings have a way of complicating things.
I was expecting this story to be fully set during the festive season, but it spans pretty much an entire year. Elodie starts dating Callum, but she doesn't know he essentially tricked her into a relationship with him. And then there's Nick, who was getting ready to confess his love for Elodie, but backed down when he found out she was dating Callum. While I don't mind a love triangle, this one was just not believable. Nick and Elodie made a lot of sense as friends, but I just couldn't see the spark between them. Callum and Elodie had some sparks, but they were mostly present when they were still trying to one-up each other in their Santa war. Add to that Callum's determination to "win" Elodie for himself, making it seem like he sees her more like a conquest than a romantic partner, and that was enough for me to completely check out from the romances. I hung in there until the end because I was honestly just waiting for Callum to get his comeuppance, and I was left hanging.
(I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley. All thought and opinions are my own.)
And so many themes going on as the story progresses.
From unrequited love and enemies to lovers, there is a little bit of something for every reader to enjoy.
Our main protagonist is Elodie Martin.
She is a woman that's known hardship. Losing her parents at a young age and being bought up by her grandparents. Her heart has hardened a little over the years and after losing her Nan only recently, even her Christmas spirit has started to dwindle.
The final nail in the coffin, when her Grandad decides to retire from being Santa Claus at their family run toy store.
And then Nick comes into her life.
With some big shoes (boots) to fill, could he be not only the magical replacement Santa needed to keep the business afloat, but also the reason to make Elodie believe in the enchantment of Christmas again?
I just loved this story.
OK, I admit, I knew what direction the story was heading in. But sometimes that's a good thing.
We all long for a happy ending right?
Barker has got it just right.
With a balance of drama and laughter and a quirky bunch of characters, Santa Maybe has all the feels held within its pages.
A charming tale that will be perfect for cosying up with during the winter season
I have a pretty low bar when it comes to Christmas romances (I have a weakness for the Hallmark Christmas offerings in December) but yikes, this was bad!
The premise wasn't bad, but the execution was terrible. Every single thought and feeling the characters had was spelled out in excruciatingly tortuous detail for paragraph after paragraph - the book could have been less than half the length it was if the author had embraced show, don't tell. Elodie was sad that her parents had died young. Callum was sad because he had no friends because of all his money (a millionaire shop owner these days seems rarer than rocking horse pooh mind you). Nick was obsessed with Christmas and randomly became obsessed with his boss because... I have no idea.
This was the story of an unlikely love triangle, with no rational reason any of them wanted to be in a relationship, and the author apparently lost track of the year between the Christmases when they were fighting it out because, among other mad time jumps the Tardis would have been worthy of, Nick apparently needed the heating on in August to keep his feet warm.
I should have DNF-ed, but I let my Christmas spirit drive me on. I won't be reading any more by this author.
I feel AWFUL rating a book this low but this book just was not it for me. I struggled so hard to get to 40% and then I skim read the final 60% and I was so close to just giving up at 40%, and the only reason I continued was because this was a Netgalley ARC. I hate to say it but I found this book incredibly boring. To me, it had no depth to it. The characters were superficial and not relatable at all. I felt that Elodie and Callum in particular were devoid of a personality. The conversations between characters made me cringe and weren’t realistic of how people would speak to each other in real life. The relationships between the characters felt very juvenile considering they are all supposed to be in their thirties. Callum and Elodie has zero chemistry so how they ended up together is beyond me. I just couldn’t find anything to like about this book, as much as I hate to say it. This is just my opinion and I’m sure other people will absolutely love this book but I was given a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and unfortunately, this is me being completely honest.
Fabulous Christmas story that was funny and sweet. Nick Winter was adorable and I loved how he helped Elodie overcome her dislike of Christmas. A fantastic love triangle that kept me guessing! A real gift of a book!
This book started off slow for me, but oh my goodness it was a gorgeous read. I was laughing, cringing and crying throughout.. I’ll be taking my niece and nephew to see Santa just to live out this book, lol. A great Christmas read!
The low rating should have been a clue. DNF at 13% - the writing style is not for me, the conversations don’t flow or seem natural at all and I had no interest in any of the characters.
Aw, what a wonderful festive romance and with such a perfect ending! J Elodie Martin own Martin’s Toy Store, the only toy shop left in town apart from the big department store called Ashleys. Elodie’s grandad has always played the role of Santa Clause in the grotto in the run up to Christmas and the Martin’s toy shop always makes more money than Ashley’s when it comes to the grotto’s takings. But after Elodie’s grandad has a stroke he can no longer fulfil the role and she has to find someone else to play Santa.
This is such a brilliant story and the perfect festive romance to read this Christmas! Despite owning a toy shop and having her grandad be the famous resident Santa every year, Elodie has never enjoyed anything about Christmas since her parents died. Unlike Elodie the new man she soon finds to replace her grandad, Nick Winter, is so full of Christmas cheer it’s infectious. Despite Elodie’s initial dislike for Nick and his enthusiasm, the two soon grow closer and closer as Christmas draws near. It feels as if a Christmas romance is going to blossom but Elodie soon discovers something about Nick that makes her rethink her feelings towards him. I love how this story goes and all the twists and interesting things that happen. At first Elodie and her grandad need to find a new Santa and this in itself is a difficult task, especially when Nick ends up being the only man to show up to an interview. But we soon see Nick welcomed by the Martin family and I love how he and Elodie get closer and eventually become good friends. I like how this story is told from three different perspectives: Elodie’s, Nick’s and Callum Ashley’s.
Callum is the owner of the local department store and I like how different a character he is. While Elodie has her own personal struggles with keeping the toy shop going throughout the year having to compete with Ashley’s department store which brings in more sales, it’s at Christmastime that her shop really shines and always outdoes Ashley’s every year, but with Nick now in the role of Martin’s Santa instead of Elodie’s grandad it becomes clear that Martin’s could be in big trouble and there’s such tension between Elodie and Callum Ashley throughout the story. I enjoyed reading not only about Elodie’s own story dealing with looking after Martin’s and her struggles with keeping her toy shop open, but we also see more about Nick who is an out of work actor most of the time struggling to make enough money to help him care for his mum. Callum’s chapters were interesting too showing how different his life is to Nick’s and Elodies with his life being filled with expensive cars, beautiful women and more money than makes sense.
You definitely feel for Nick more than Callum at first and I love how in spite of the way the characters are first portrayed, things end up happening that show a different side, especially to Callum and I like how this weird love triangle develops in the story with Elodie at the heart of it. I don’t want to spoil the story by giving away too much but the whole story takes place over more than a year with lots happening to all the different characters helping to grow each of them. One thing I found most interesting was that you kind of see the romance as being straightforward at first, and you definitely want things to go a certain way with some of the characters but the story is more complicated than that and some of the characters you think are pretty one dimensional like Callum end up being more complex the further you read on.
The ending is good and so perfect, I love what ends up happening. Even though some characters go through some heart-breaking moments the ending is so brilliant and ends up finishing everything perfectly. There is an epilogue set in the future too which adds to the last chapter which made me smile so much with what we find out has happened and I really love how this book wraps everything up nicely for all the characters. There are very occasional uses of s swear word and one use of the f word but nothing else really upsetting except for some mentions of bereavement that some characters have had to deal with.
Overall this is such a perfect Christmas book and story and I can’t believe how much I have enjoyed reading this and how I couldn’t stop turning the pages! I’m still thinking about this book several days later and just want to re-read it again already! There are great lighter moments too which make you smile and even laugh and it’s just the perfect Christmas tale for all wrapping everything up nicely for all three of the main characters. I love how they all grow and change and how everything ends up for all of them and I would definitely recommend this story for anyone looking for a great festive romance as it is just perfect with a few great twists that make the ending even more brilliant! 🙂 -Thanks to Aria for a free copy
Toy store owner Elodie Martin is really not that into Christmas, but it is the only time of year that Martin's Toy Kingdom can compete with the local department store run by her nemesis Callum Ashley, and she relies on the profit she makes to get through the lean times.
Sadly, this year, things are not looking at all rosy for the festive season, and Elodie is worried. Her beloved grandad Jim, the big draw of Martin's Christmas grotto as the best Santa Claus for miles around, is unexpectedly retiring, and Elodie needs a replacement fast. Elodie's advert for a jolly, mature Santa lookalike draws in only one candidate - out of work actor Nick Winter, who really does not look the part. Will Nick be able to top the serious Santa Claus competition fielded by the infuriatingly handsome Callum in his flashy department store grotto? Elodie has little choice by to give him a chance - at least he seems to have a lot of Christmas spirit!
This Christmas is going to be more of a challenge than normal, but it might just give Elodie the chance to find her soulmate under the mistletoe. Who will turn out to be the man on her wish list?
Santa Maybe is a gorgeous story that takes all the ingredients of a perfect romantic comedy, and adds that extra sprinkle of Christmas magic to the mix. At its heart, it is the story of a love-triangle, but in Mary Jayne Baker's hands it becomes something very special. Baker does a really clever job of hiding exactly where Elodie's destiny lies by playing with the theme of second chances, and I was not sure where this story was going to take me until the lovely heart-melting end which was everything I wanted. At first sight, Elodie, Nick and Callum are different as they could possible be, but as the story unfolds all the poignant little secrets that have kept each of them at arm's length from love are gradually revealed, and they all learn to let down their barriers. Unlike in many rom-coms it is not quite so easy to see who is most deserving of Elodie's affection, which was a delight. Well played, Mary Jayne Baker!
Beyond our starring central three, there is a lovely cast of supporting actors in this story, especially Elodie's grandfather, and Baker uses them all to hit you right in the emotional sweet spot, with themes of family, loss and love. There is so much here to laugh out loud about, but Baker also knows how to reduce you to a weeping mess - and I loved every extra sparkly, magical, festive moment.
I am now in the mood for a marathon Christmas movie binge, which will, of course, include Elf - and very possibly Christmas Bingo!
I loved the writing of this book. Although the characters read very childish as someone who hasn't dated a lot I actually felt I could relate to Elodie because I too struggle to pick up on social cues. I really loved pops, Elodie, Nick and Callum as characters but they all did annoy me at parts. Elodie with her indeciciveness. Callum will his quest to win Elodie like she is a piece of meat to be won. Nick and his whinging (like dude just work up the courage and ask the girl out). Pops advise was confusing at times as it was like he was on both nick and Callum's side. There's a lot of humour and friendship in this book which I thoroughly enjoyed.
I wish this hadn't been a two person love interest book as I felt that is what made me disengage towards the end and also is a result of Elodie's indecisiveness. I love a friends to lovers trope and enemies to lovers trope but this book tried to do both and that didn't work for me because in the beginning I was rooting for one of them, and then middle and end I was rooting for the other.
My biggest issues are that one this book isn't set fully during Christmas (first 20% and last 10% are) which I was expecting. I expected a toy store owner war throughout the whole book between Callum and Elodie and we didn't get that. The second issue I had with the book and the reason I knocked it off a star is we get to see one romance story progress for a good chunk of the book and then she does not end up with him at the end of the book. You cannot give the reader a couple for 50% of the book and then change your mind in the last 20% to the other. I didn't even like who Elodie ended up because they had no romantic chemistry and the epilogue was disappointing. Her indecisiveness really killed the book in the last 20% of the book.
Ultimately, the ending left me unsatisfied. It definitely pulls at the heartstrings and I genuinely laughed out loud so many times because it is funny and cute for Christmas. The Santa moments with the children were some of my favourite scenes, and I would have loved to see more of those especially as the book is about Santa.
Tbh to make me love the book I would have preferred this to be an enemies to lovers with santa helping to bring them together.
"Christmas. Oh God, how Elodie hated Christmas. She never had as many migraines as she did during the so-called Most Wonderful Time of the Year."
Elodie Martin is getting ready for the festive season - but she's not happy about it.
Between having to worry about her family toy store not stocking the must-buy toy of the season and trying to find a new Santa after her beloved Pops had a stroke, it's all work and no fun. Their Santa has been their saving grace every year, and they'll need a Christmas Miracle to pull this off.
So when Nick Winter, the living embodiment of Christmas Spirit auditions to be their new Santa she can't stand it. But she's going to need him if she has a chance of beating Callum Ashley and his ridiculous eight-story department store this year, especially now they've made a bet that could either make or break Martins for good.
And as for Elodie - she's going to have to really tap into the festive feeling if she wants this to work - but her heart would need to grow about three sizes for that to happen, and who could possible ever achieve that?
Santa Maybe is a story that could've been taken from straight from a Christmas Card but with a modern contemporary flair and a lot of humour to make an indulgently fun festive read.
It was bursting with that feelgood glow - familiar and warm, full of your favourite romance tropes in Bakers own style making it such an easy read with a whole lot of heart. It's got that tried-and-true formula for cosy reading with a cheeky edge that could only come from Mary Jayne Baker.
The story moved slowly and naturally, with a few unexpected twists and turns, changes of heart and silly moments that left either giggling or gasping. The characters here were the real heart and soul of the book - they were so uniquely loveable and real and the story grew as they all did.
Love triangles, Christmas Grottos, Fake Beards and Very Bad Choices - there's a lot to love about Santa Maybe.
𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: friends to lovers, slow burn, Christmas, legacy, unrequited love, he falls first, reverse grumpy x sunshine
I have so many feelings about this book, but I will try to keep it as short as possible so as not to give any spoilers.
I really liked the first part of the book, when we see the grotto war that takes place between Elodie and Callum. They were at war since they were little, but now they were fighting to see who makes the best profit. But then Nick appears in the landscape, replacing Elodie's grandfather as Santa. He is very sweet, young, intelligent, and I enjoyed how he convinced Elodie to like Christmas.
The second part teased me a lot. I wanted something but then something happened. We also see how Elodie gets out of her comfort zone and how Nick gets stronger and stronger feelings, but now Callum appears much more often and made the slow burn in the book very strong.
I really liked the fact that Elodie opens a new business to help Nick have more money, but also her grotto to have more profit. We don't see that often enough in books.
When I say that this book has the biggest slow burn, that's right, you only get what you want at the end of the book.
I loved her, but Mary Jayne Baker doesn't tease me that much anymore, I don't think I can take that anymore.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley, Head of Zeus and Mary Jayne Baker for the opportunity to read this amazing book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you so much Head of Zeus/Aria and NetGalley for this opportunity.
Well, I could say there’s a first time for everything. I read a Christmas novel in August. It felt kinda strange at first, but then I just tried to imagine myself on my comfy armchair with my From Blood and Ash blanket and a cup of hot chocolate.
This is my second book written by this author. "The 24 Hour Dating Agency" was one of my first reads on NetGalley, and, as I stated in my review, I loved the way the characters' imperfections were portrayed because I had the chance to relate to the characters. But what about this one? Phenomenal since page one. I like how this writer can put lots of stuff in the caldron and still create and unique and successful novel. I remember I was worried about having three main characters in “The 24 Hour Dating Agency”, but the writer did a marvellous job since none overshadowed the others. The same thing happened here, you came across so many themes that every taste will be satisfied.
Can’t wait to read this story again during the Christmas season.
P.S. I think this book needs a screen adaptation 👀
