Reason to Live

Rate this book
He’s on a mission to win back the heart of the only woman he’s ever loved, but there’s a problem. He’s stuck in the body of a man she’s never met.

Richard Dunham awakes in a hospital with no memory of the accident that allegedly killed him. He thinks he knows his name, but the hospital staff disagrees. Confusion turns to terror when he looks in the mirror and a stranger looks back.

When a mysterious old man shows up at his bedside with tall tales of a life—and death—for which he has no recall, Richard realizes that he’s not in Kansas anymore. He has no point of reference, no memories of his own, no idea of the kind of man he’d been. When a series of flashbacks begin to paint a picture of his past life, Richard doesn’t like what he sees.

Richard, now Michael Riordan, must navigate his way through an unfamiliar landscape as he embarks on an unexpected life-or-death mission. When the obstacles in his path appear insurmountable, Richard must make a choice. Will he let his past determine his future, or will he discover that it’s never too late to be what he might have been?

Disclaimer: Reason to Live is a re-write of my first novel, A Lifetime Last Night, that more closely follows the screenplay adaptation. While the story is told differently, many of the characters and the premise are the same.

About the author

David Homick

10 books16 followers
After years of working in the banking industry in The Finger Lakes Region of Central New York, David Homick left his suits behind for a more casual gig as a freelance Web Designer. He loves the creative aspect of his work, which was not something that was encouraged growing up. Perhaps it’s all that pent up creative energy that has motivated him to express himself now between the covers of a book.

Homick weaves a touch of metaphysical wisdom and inspiration into intriguing, suspenseful, contemporary love stories and mysteries. He believes that fiction should do more than entertain. Good fiction causes us to see ourselves and our world in a different light, creating an emotional resonance that remains with us long after the final page has been read.

Many readers will in some way identify with his characters, whose outer circumstances and inner demons stand in the way of the love and sense of belonging that they seek. Their journeys have many twists and turns, and at times seems hopeless, but through perseverance they learn the key to building meaningful relationships and creating the life they ultimately deserve. Of course, we should never rule out a clever twist of fate or subtle divine intervention along the way.

One of the underlying themes of his writing, as well as his life, was inspired by a favorite quote from George Eliot. "It's never too late to be what you might have been."

A Great Story without a Decent Ending

I really enjoy this author's writing. I believe this was the first book he wrote and I loved the premise - the hero wakes up in another man's body after a deadly car accident. He spends most of the book trying to win back his wife who of course is now a widow. I loved the book until the end. The author never ties up all the loose ends in the story. At the end our hero is jolted back into a different timeline. In this time he survived the accident and works overtime trying to win his wife back. I was very disappointed. I've read his other books and they were both great.

David Homick is a local author from my hometown. I bought all of his novels during a fundraiser our library was hosting which entailed showing the community local authors talents at the fundraising event. While I had already known David from other avenues being a small town, I had always wanted to read his novels. This is the fourth novel I Havel read through now in this new year. I haven’t been disappointed. From what I understand this book is a re-write of the very first novel David wrote that has been turned into a screen adaptation. I have not read that first book and I believe while the characters remain the same there are some changes in the story. I note the first novel is approximately 100 pages longer than this adaptation of the story. I would like to get the first written novel to see the rare differences. So far I haven’t been disappointed in any of David’s writings and look forward to the last novel I have to read.

Nice Story

A man wakes up in a hospital and finds out that he is someone else. Over time he realizes that he lost out on a great deal in his other life. He attempts to win his wife again. He returns to himself and tries to reconcile with his wife. Good story about recognizing what you could lose if you forget to pay attention to what really matters in life.
