From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Adriana Mather comes a heartwarming tale of love, family, and pastry perfection.
Maddi DeLuca is coming home for the holidays with her nine-year-old son, only it’s not the triumphant return she might have hoped for. She recently broke down on a reality TV baking show, letting the entire country know she feels like a colossal failure. And she can be certain her mother will remind her of all the ways she hasn’t lived up to expectations over the years.
Ten years ago, all Maddi dreamt of was running her father’s beloved bakery in their tiny coastal town of Haverberry Cove, MA. Her best friend, Wilder Buenaventura, had his own dream—a life with Maddi. And for one brilliant moment when they were seventeen, those dreams collided. They baked together. They loved each other insatiably. But like a fallen soufflé, their relationship imploded, taking their lifelong friendship with it.
If she had her way, Maddi would have stayed in California, hiding her head in its beautiful white sands. But at her mother’s request, she has returned to her hometown to help deal with an urgent matter concerning her father’s will and his nostalgia-filled bakery. What Maddi doesn’t know is that this issue also mysteriously involves the one person she’s spent forever trying to forget—Wilder. Now she finds herself forced to make an impossible give up her father’s bakery and her lifelong dream, or find a way to coexist with Wilder without murdering him with a cookie cutter.
Adriana Mather is the New York Times bestselling author of How to Hang a Witch, with family roots that go back to Sleepy Hollow, the Salem Witch Trials, and the Titanic. She's also an actor and producer best known for her role in the award-winning Honeyglue. She co-owns Zombot Pictures, a production company that makes feature films. Her first acting scene in a film ever was with Danny Glover, and she was terrified she would mess it up. In addition, her favorite food is pizza, she has too many cats, and a deep abiding love for all things autumnal.

I could have miss-read over these details so I’m sorry if these details were actually in the book. I was left feeling a little meh at the end but it was overall a decent read.
Feels: like a cozy Christmas read and craving something sweet while reading.
𐙚⋆°。⋆♡ pre-read ♡⋆°。⋆𐙚 ⤷ Omg! I waited the whole damn month for this to arrive, and it’s finally here I’m jumping in right away. I’ve got a good feeling about this. Just hope I don’t jinx it 😔

Wow. I was not expecting this book to hit me deep in the feels but that’s exactly what it did. I went into this book thinking it would be a fluffy, heartfelt romcom and was hit in the heart with a angsty, heartbreaking story. Don’t get me wrong it still had its cute, fluffy, romantic moments but it was so emotional as well.
I loved Madeline and Wilder and the second chance/small town romance. Their story was sweet and heartbreaking all in one. I also thought the relationships between Maddi and her parents was so hard to read. I really felt for Maddi in the flashbacks. I’m so glad that Maddi and her mother managed to resolve their conflict and it did manage to bring me to tears, which is rare for me when I read, so that’s saying something.
Reading the back and forth between Maddi and Wilder was so frustrating but to me that means that it was written so well. I was on the edge of my seat, flying through this book to see how it would all turn out and to say the ending was exactly what you’d want in a romcom is putting it lightly. The ending gave me such warm and happy feelings and I really didn’t want it to end.
This book is also perfect for you Christmas lovers as the main story is set around the Christmas season🎄So make sure you get this book on your TBR ready for the festive season.
Anyway, I feel like I could go on and on about this book and how it made me feel but we’d be here for ages 😂
Thank you to @netgalley @adriana_mather and @blackstonepublishing for the chance to read this ARC. This book gets released on the 14th November, just in time for the Christmas season.
I struggled with Mom Com. While I liked the story and the premise, the execution didn't work for me.
WHAT I LIKED
The Child I am usually wary of children in adult books. However, I loved Spencer. His page time is perfectly balanced. Even for his young age (9), he has his agency, thoughts, and feelings and cutely expresses them. The relationship between Spencer and his mom gave me Gilmore Girl vibes with their dialogue.
The Premise I loved the idea of the story.
WHAT DIDN'T WORK FOR ME
The Romance: Despite the title Mom Com, there is almost no Com in this book. I expected a cute story about two people falling back in love while working side by side in a bakery, but that is not this story. There is a lot of emphasis on grief and heartache. The issue is that it all comes across as immature and whiny. The whole story reads like a YA book.
My other issue is for a second chance romance; there is almost zero romance in the present timeline. Most of the time, the couple is together they are fighting.
The Flashbacks: I have said it before, but second-chance romances do not work for me unless there is a dual timeline. I need to see you fall in love the first time to believe you could a second time.
At first, I was pleasantly surprised to see flashbacks used to set up the past timeline. However, the transition was jarring and took me out of the story. The ebook and, I assume, the print book starts the flashback with italics. However, with the audiobook, there is no way to tell. I would have preferred separate chapters for the two different timelines.
The other issue I had with the flashbacks is that they don't tell the story of the Wilder and Maddi's love. It is about them breaking up, struggling to remain friends, and fighting about who they are dating. I get what the author was going for; it just wasn't executed well.
The Side Characters Nearly every side character in this book is a terrible person, and not in an interesting way. A few redeem themselves, but barely.
This may be a me problem, and not a book problem because there are so many great reviews of this book. If you like second chance romance and women's fiction, you may want to give it a try.
TW: Death of a Parent, Teen Pregnancy.
Thank you to Blackstone Publishing for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Being part of this ARC tour was truly an honor. I would describe Mom Com as Gilmore Girls meets Hallmark Christmas. I sat on my couch all day reading this book from start to finish. It is a beautiful story that kept me enthralled until the very end. I felt joy and comfort as well as a bit of heartbreak. Did I cry? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely.
“If she had her way, Maddi would’ve stayed in California, hiding her head in it’s beautiful white sands. But at her mothers request, she has returned to her hometown to help deal with an urgent matter concerning her father’s will and his nostalgia filled bakery.”
idk man the constant back and forth switch from the scenes in the past and scenes in the present sandwiched in the paragraphs with no warning was so jarring
This story was utterly delightful and just what I needed at this particular moment in time. It was a typical rom-com in that it was full of misunderstandings and pining and quirky characters. But it was also a lovely, cathartic read for me since it deals with the grief of losing a parent and having things left unsaid and just how hard the holidays can be with all of that looming over your head and your heart.
I've loved every one of Adriana Mather's novels I've read, but this is my new favorite. I'm so excited for her foray into adult novels -- and a romantic comedy at that -- and I can't wait to see what she writes next!
Mom Com By: Adriana Mather Available November 14th, 2023
"Haverberry Cove is Massachusetts' standard for elegance. It's three-quarters New England charm and one-quarter brine-scented driftwood, which is to say it's basically perfect ‐-- except for the fact that I can't stand being in it. Rambling historical houses with ocean views surround a postcard-worthy square where the aesthetic is hand-made, hand-carved, and locally sourced." - Adriana Mather, Mom Com
With a release date set in November, just in time for the holiday season, fans of Adriana new and old will be sure to find Mom Com quickly become a favorite to add to their shelves and gift to their rom-com loving friends and family.
While romance isn't my typical go to genre to read, I was not disappointed and this one from Adriana has already earned five stars from me!
Those whom have read any of Mather's previous books set in New England, such as How To Hang A Witch, will find themselves sucked into Haverberry Cove, MA as the story unravels about Maddi's complicated past and buried, unresolved feelings tied to the fictional New England town.
Through Adriana's detailed and descriptive writing, I found myself whisked away through various scenes such as the decorated and lit up seaside square, the holiday market, The Corner Bar and Tony's pizza and bar, and of course, There's Nothing Batter Bakery.
Mom Com truly is as heartwarming and sweet as the pastries described in the book and as the titles of each chapter. As a thirty something year old woman from small town, coastal Maine myself, it was easy for me to relate with the setting with winter and holidays a main theme. Of course it's nice to escape to other worlds when reading, but sometimes we crave what's already familiar and need some of that "magic" restored through the story in a cute, feel good book.
Adriana manages to do just that, bring back magic and connection for her characters that they thought they lost in themselves, their friends and families, and their home. I think everyone can remember times where we dealt with grief, tried to run away, wanted to handle life on our own without any help, and ended up isolated, missing pieces, having wrong ideas, or lost along the way.
Mom Com brings Maddi and Spence back home all the way from California where she's been trying to make it for herself and Spence his whole life. Upon returning to Haverberry Cove, it dredged up a lot of heartbreak and memories Maddi tried to move on from. But through seeing Haverberry from the perspective of her son and his wonder and amazement that she hadn't felt herself since her childhood, and through reconnecting with her mother and her old flame, the handsome, rich Wilder, Maddi begins to rediscover what she loved about home. In a series of appropriate and semi-dramatic events, Maddi finds out missing puzzle pieces and is on the way to mending relationships with her mother and friends, and falling in love with herself, with Haverberry, and with Wilder again. She finds that the magic of baking and her father, and even love, were never truly gone, she just needed to see it for herself.
I am honored to have had the chance to read and review Mom Com, and I can't wait to add it to my shelf and share it with others! Mom Com had the sense of familiarity and New England setting I always love, and it has relatable emotions and some sad but also realistic life events. Adriana's characters are like people we all know in our own lives, the rich ones, the gossips, the ex friends and lovers, the children and cousins, the new or reconnected flames, the family that are sometimes difficult to get along with, but they're still family and the loved ones or community members gone, but not forgotten or who have left their trademark or legacy, like a bakery.
Like the icing on a hot cinnamon bun on Christmas morning, Mom Com and Adriana really do bring a taste of that holiday spirit and that magic of love and more deep human connection that we all need more of all year round, whether in sunny California or snowy New England. Mom Com will fill you up, just like every treat at There's Nothing Batter Bakery would.
Maddi, having lost a baking contest and cried an embarrassing amount on National TV returns to her small home town to resolve some remaining matters from her late father’s will. At home, she faces Wilder, master pastry chef, member of the town’s richest family, her ex-best friend and the guy who broke Maddi’s heart. Told from the single point of view of Maddi, a single mother of a nine year old, Mom Com takes on a Christmas themed exploration of the past, the present and resolving an array of misunderstandings. The character development in this book for the main character was amazing, from realising why other characters made certain decisions to finally understanding why things turned out the way they were. When an entire novel is set around one event from the past, I am often hesitant and very rarely receptive but the author wrote this in an engaging and enticing manner. A great romance to pick for the holidays, light read and satisfying (albeit slightly rushed) ending.

Review: I’m so happy I joined the arc to team to read this book in advance! This book was a delight and brought a smile to my face! It felt like a cup of hot chocolate with a holiday pastry! Speaking of pastries this book made me hungry! I had to grab a cake that I had close by me! This book read like a movie! Which I hope does happen! It would be the best holiday romance movie! This book was emotional and will have you in tears! It was very charming and I loved Wilder he was such. A sweet love interest and I was rooting for him and Maddie! If you love cozy holiday romances please pick this up!
Mom Com isn’t the light, funny romantic comedy you may expect from the title. Maddie has returned to her hometown with her 9 year old son Spencer after finding out her late father’s will had an addendum to it. Uncomfortable and feeling out of place, Maddie wars with her feelings of being stuck in the hometown she ran to the other side of the country to get away with. Her high school sweetheart Wilder brings a whole bout of drama and miscommunication and the family drama is heavy on both Wilder and Maddie’s sides. I felt a lot of strong emotions while reading this especially in the flashbacks to when Maddie and Wilder were in high school. It’s not necessarily a holiday light read but I enjoyed it.
Thanks Blackstone Publishing for gifting me a copy.
What an absolutely fun read, perfect for romcom lovers! MomCom follows Maddi DeLuca coming home for Christmas with her 8 year old son, after a depressing defeat on a televised baking show. 10 years ago, all Maddi could think of was taking over her father's beloved bakery in their tiny coastal town. Her best friend (and boyfriend at that time) Wilder Buaventura had his own dream - a life with Maddi. They spent hours and hours in her father's bakery until one day, their relationship implodes and there goes that dream..
Maddi doesn't want to go home for Christmas but goes to please her mother and to deal with her father's will and his bakery. The will also includes Wilder, the one person she's been trying to forget about this whole time!
Mom Com was a sweet read about a second chance with your first love. I loved Maddi's son Spencer and all his wisdom for a 9 year old boy. I loved the slow burn romance buildup between Maddi and Wilder and I quite enjoyed the lead up to what went down with their breakup ten years ago.
Mom Com is a very enjoyable Christmas read and I highly recommend it for any bookclubs this Christmas 🎁⛄
Maddi is a single mom who is forced to return to her hometown for the holidays due to a clause in her late father's will. She reluctantly returns with her 9 yr old son and desperately doesn't want to relive her youth and all the drama that happened before she abruptly left 10 years ago.
When she is hit with something she least expected, she's forced to work alongside her childhood ex, Wilder, who she has sworn off as her enemy. Will she be able to heal her old wounds and come to terms with what's outlined in her Father's will?
This was a heart warming, holiday read. If you like a little family drama and enemies to lovers, then I recommend this book! There isn't much spice, but in my opinion, it isn't needed.
Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for an Advanced Readers Copy of this novel.
Adriana has been a author I have been a big fan of since the very first time I learned about her first book. I adore her writing style, it’s easy to read and follow- it’s feels like a movie playing in my head.
I rate this book a 4.3/5. I really enjoyed the book, not my normal reading as of late, but I genuinely enjoyed the story line. A single mom finding love again always pulls at my heart strings having grown up with a single mom and I loved seeing the passion both the FMC and the MMC had not only for their own passions but also eachother.
It was an enjoyable read, and I’m grateful I got to read it. I recommended it to my mom and I think she’ll enjoy it.
Overall, I would say it’s a sweet romance, with some angst and miscommunication, and a HEA (which I always prefer in the end).
Maddie returns home with her son for the first time in ten years. She finds out her father left her the bakery in his will but is shocked to find out that she has to co-run it with Wilder, the boy she has been trying to forget all these years.
This is my first Mather book, and I really enjoyed it! The audiobook made for a quick and easy listen, and I am always down for any romance that is foodie themed.
Read if you like: -Second chance romance -Single mom -Small town -Bakeries -Working with your ex -Christmas themed
Although I enjoyed this one, I'm not sure I would classify it as a rom-com. There is definitely a romance, but i felt like the book was about so much more than that.....family dynamics, teen pregnancy, grief, and more. Side note - all of the talk about food and baked goods might make you hungry :).
Perfect holiday love story. Dual timelines, text messages, and short chapters named after different baked goods keep the reader wanting more and more. You definitely will want to read to see how a second chance changes the lives of Maddie, Jake, Wilder, and more characters from Mom Com.
Gilmore girls sort of story if you merged Rory’s and Loralie’s lives together. Super messy, super dramatic, edge of your seat on whether anyone will be able to make up the pain of the past. Was obsessed with finishing it!
What is that line from Clueless? “So sweet you gave him a toothache?” That’s what I thought after reading Mom Com. A super sweet, perfect for the holidays read. Grab a copy, a cup of hot cocoa, a cuddly blanket and enjoy this wonderful book. If you’re like me, you’ll have it read in one enjoyable sitting. Loved it!
Hands down one of the best books I have read all year long. This book follows the life of Madeline (Maddi) and her son, Spence. They are summoned back home for the holidays to deal with her father's will. She will find out things she never knew and some healing for herself. This book easily puts you in mind of a Hallmark movie. It will also leave you on an emotional rollercoaster giving you all the feels. There were parts of the book that left me with wet eyes on more than one occasion. In some parts of this book, I was Maddie 30 years ago. It's definitely a book you don't want to miss out on. Desperately hoping for more books like this
Thank you so much @blackstonepublishing for the complimentary copy.
This was just what I needed after struggling through my last book. A quick, easy and fun read that left a smile on my face. At times I found the story and Maddie’s back and forth on her feelings a little repetitive. However, once I reminded myself that she was only in her mid-twenties and took a little trip down memory lane to my 20’s… let’s just say I understood more and gave her lots of grace. In my younger years I wasn’t quite the delight that I am now. 😜 (family members if you’re reading this, no need to chime in! lol) I loved the flashbacks to the past, they really helped me to understand some of the heightened emotions and reactions to events & people in the present. I would have liked a little more exploration into Maddie’s relationship with her mom, perhaps some chapters or flashbacks from her mom’s POV. Last note Mom Com did both chapter numbers and titles. Eg “Ch 12 Ballsy Watermelon Vodka Sorbet – a refreshing and delightful way to inspire foolishness, served in tiny deceptive scoops.” So cute! Another last note, I would have LOVED some of the recipes for all the delicious baked goodies that were mentioned all throughout the book. While this is technically a holiday read, it’s light on the holiday.
I loved this angsty romance so much! It was a heart wrenching second chance novel. Despite the catchy title, cute cover, and Christmas setting, this book is not fluffy. Don't go into it expecting a light holiday rom-com or you could be disappointed.
Maddi and Wilder were inseparable as kids and quickly jumped into a relationship as teens until he broke her heart with no explanation. Fast forward 10 years and Maddi has to return to her hometown because of an issue with her dad's will. Wilder is there and makes it clear that he wants to move forward, but Maddi has to face her past, deal with her grief, and learn to trust again before that can happen.
This book was so good. I loved the flashbacks in this book. They were quick, embedded in the chapters, and gave the reader exactly what we needed to know without getting bogged down in the past. My heart absolutely ached for Maddi. She had a rough go of it as a teenager and was still somewhat struggling as an adult. I loved her growth arc and how she came to be able to communicate her needs and desires. I wish I knew Wilder a little more, but what I saw I really liked. This is probably an unpopular ask, but I also wish I would have had a little more time with Spence. The pregnancy story line was huge, but the actual child seemed like an afterthought.
I have really been into books that have this same vibe lately. If you want more like this I would also suggest Forget Me Not, Maybe Once Maybe Twice, Bend Towards The Sun, and The Predictable Heartbreaks of Imogen Finch.
Mom Com by Adriana Mather ARC Review Available November 14, 2023
If you want to feel all the feels, read this book! You will laugh, you will cry, and both will be beyond worth it! Adriana has written a beautifully poignant, funny, and heartwarming novel with Mom Com. I was fully invested in all the characters in this second chance romance that explores grief, heartbreak, love, family, and so much more. This novel is witty and warm. Even at its saddest, it has such heart. You will be swept away with the quintessential small town vibes, and your mouth will water with the start of each cleverly titled chapter. The perfect holiday read!
This one almost slipped past my radar but by pure luck I saw a few other rave reviews + plus a glowing blurb by Emily Henry and a Gilmore Girls comparison made this a must read for me. And boy did it sure deliver! I'm a sucker for second chance, small town romances and this single mom, bakery joint inheritance with her ex gave me ALL the feels. Highly recommended for fans of swoony, complex back stories and Hallmark Holiday movie lovers. This was also great on audio narrated by Jorjeana Marie. Adriana Mather is a new to me author and I am excited to read more ASAP!!
This was amazing!!!! Adriana’s writing just keeps getting better and better! I love Maddi and Wilder’s dynamic soooo much! And if I ever have a kid I hope he’s just as cool as Spence was!
Firstly, the title for this book is wrong because there is very little Com in MomCom. There is a lot of guilt and angst and drama and pain, and if you love Emily Henry you will probably love this too. The heroine is so clever; her inner monologue is brilliant, the backdrop of Small Town at Christmas is Hallmark perfect. But everyone other than the heroine and her 9 year old son kind of suck. Her parents are horribly toxic, the townspeople are shitty, the hero's mother is a c*nt. This was one of those books where I saw how it was going to end and was very unhappy about it. BUT, I think I am just not the right audience for this book. It was very well written and again, I think plenty of people would love it. The only reason I myself am not rating it higher is because I usually reserve high ratings for books I will reread, and this book is too stressful and angsty for me to want to revisit
