After an episode of the SAKAMOTO DAYS anime (season 1, part 2), I returned to the manga to check the off-feeling I got from watching the anime compared to my memory of the source material.
I could see how the expressive and gritty illustrated violence worked so well on the printed page, especially with its serialization, the weekly cliffhangers worked differently. The studio and production staff struggled to translate that energy and storytelling to a seasonal anime that by neccessity has to adapt several weekly chapters of a manga into one episode.
The anime handicapped itself trying to be faithful to the manga because certain storytelling techniques that work for printed page doesn't really translate to animation. In fact, animation has itself has a different array of techniques that can be used.
At this part of the story in the manga, Sakamoto is finding himself slowly returning to the assassin world that he had already left to run his convenience store. Then again, having a bounty on your head is going to put on your post-retirement plans.
Anyone who reads this and loves this with their entire heart and being like is do is surely Hard boiled! Man oh man both in the manga and the anime Boiled was my absolute favorite assassin I loved his tricks his style and even his convictions and aside from all the other incredible action he still stole the show with the three chapters he was in in my opinion. This series just gets more and more epic and insane in ways you’d never expect I mean the ending in that busted Ferris wheel cart was so beautiful you could love it even framed on a wall I’m mean they go way too hard with this one.
Another highly entertaining entry, it blends the family live with the hitman premise seamlessly. There's just something so entertaining about Sakamoto trying to hide the fact that he has a bounty on his head whilst also attempting to give his family the perfect day out at an amusement park. Volume two continues the trend of being a wonderful balance of humour, action, and heart.
funny but let’s get more serious already. i know it’ll be good. and nagumo <3 aww, adorable clown
also it kinda icks me that people (especially on tiktok) like to call sakamoto “old man” and the father of shin and lu. the hell you mean guys? he’s 27 yo and shin is like 21 or smth, i’m almost the same age as sakamoto and i ain’t no mother to any of my 21 yo friends. stoppppp it ugh.
Sakamoto and his ex-assassin allies try to keep his wife and daughter in blissful ignorance as they enjoy a day at the amusement park while assassins converge there to cash in on the high price on Sakamoto's head.
The goofy, over-the-top humor kept me engaged even as the author tries to build a deep, dark mythology in the midst of the lunacy.
And is it my imagination, or is the assassin duo Boiled and Obiguro visually inspired by the Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis characters in Kalifornia?
The beginning of the second volume of "Sakamoto Days" finds the main characters at an amusement park. Because of the huge bounty that's been put on Sakamoto's head, a lot of assassins come after him, including some old acquaintances, but with the help of Shin and Lu he's able to defeat them and protect his family. After defeating an assassin called Boiled, they decide that the only way to end this is to get the bounty lifted, so they get the needed information to break into an organisation that might know more about this. When they get there though, they find out that the situation is much more complicated than they thought. The second volume of "Sakamoto Days" was very interesting and enjoyable. The story is moving very fast, with great pacing and a lot of creative, funny and enjoyable action scenes. The manga mostly consists of multiple fights and they are all great to read, but there's one problem. Even though they are very funny and there's not even one boring page in this volume, the stakes are never very high. If Sakamoto losses, he and his family will get killed, but so far non of the assassins has convinced me for a second that he's able to do that, so there's not really any suspense. Hopefully, this'll change in the following volumes, with more powerful villains and possibly a major death. Other than that, something that I really liked in this volume is the characters. Both Lu and Shin are very well written and loveable. Shin's abilities make for very nice comedic moments and unique fights, while Lu's personality breaks the tension and makes her a pleasure to read. The part where she's drunk is not very realistic, but at least it was very fun. Furthermore, in this volume we see how connected and devoted they both feel to the Sakamoto Family, every member of which is very well written. Sakamoto himself, is very devoted to his wife and he loves both her and their daughter very much, something that he proves through his actions. His wife is very dynamic and even though she doesn't participate in the main action, she's fun to read. The combination of comedy and action is probably this manga's highlight, since the story isn't particularly deep. Like in the first volume, the artwork isn't really great, but it's pretty good and it fits well with the story. At times, especially during fight scenes, there's too much cross-hatching, which makes the artwork less detailed and less fun to read. Still, the facial expressions are always great and help the comedic aspects of the story. Overall, this was a very enjoyable volume that continued the story in an interesting and entertaining way. 8.5/10
This was right about when the series started getting plot focused. And it's definitely where the action hit a higher tier than the rest. The roller coaster fight has some of my favorite choreography in a manga fight. Sakamoto Days is the pinnacle.
More assassin's are sent, more great fight scenes, so many funny moments, and a wonderful mall chase scene to get the newest limited edition backpack for his kid. This is a series I had no expectation on and it's creeping up to be the breakout of the year for me. 5 out of 5.
Besto dad 🤣
Kind of cute in a morbid and violent kind of way, but I don't think I'm the target audience.
Enjoyed the first two enough to not regret trying it, and I'm not sure I'm swearing off the series, but I don't see myself rushing out to get the next volume.
Volume 2 takes everything I loved about the first and cranks it up — more assassins, more absurd fight sequences, and more chances for Sakamoto to prove that being a family man doesn’t mean you can’t still wreck a room full of trained killers with household objects.
What I loved: ✔ The new characters bring fresh chaos (and comedy). ✔ The action choreography is chef’s kiss — fast, fluid, and laugh-out-loud inventive. ✔ The balance between wholesome dad energy and ruthless ex-hitman vibes somehow still works perfectly.
Why not 5 stars? A few of the gags repeat themselves, and the side characters still feel more like punchline machines than fully fleshed-out people. But honestly? I was having way too much fun to care much.
Sakamoto may be retired, but this manga definitely isn’t slowing down.
SAKAMOTO - legendary assassin and legendary father. THIS STUFF IS SO GOOD MAN. assassins are just so cool in general and i really love what they are doing with this. the characters are so fun and the fights are so cool and creative just... UGH
Pure fun. What a blast, this is going to be great animated.
A larger opponent comes into the picture, so it's not just hitman of the week. That's where this book will sink or swim, but for this volume, it's exciting, cute, clever and full of wonderful action. Loved the video store, and drunken master Lu was fantastic.
Another excellent issue. All the stuff from volume 1 was still here. Just 4 stars though. The amusement park adventure kind of dragged. Then the wife finds out what is going on but not what is really going on. Then suddenly next page back at the store the little kid is being taught how to use the store defenses against assassins. Then of course the kid is giving the bad guys bandages. It feels like some dialog was missing here between Sakamoto and his wife.
Aynı tatta aksiyon ve absürd mizahı eksik etmeden devam ediyor. Kendini tekrara mı düşecek derken ana hikayeye yeni karakterler yeni gizemler eklenmesiyle diğer ciltler için merakımı canlı tutmayı başardı.
