Every Law Enforcement Officer is a Trauma Survivor. Even veteran officers may not realize this. But constant exposure to traumatic events takes a serious toll. The body is affected, so is the nervous system, and so are the officer’s personal relationships. Off-duty days can become something to dread rather than look forward to. It doesn’t need to be this way. This book— written by a trauma therapist from a first responder family—is a definitive manual for healing from trauma exposure for those who serve in law enforcement and for those who love them. Feeling fit, healthy and unburdened by the effects of trauma can be a short-term therapeutic process. And there are steps law enforcement officers can take on their own, immediately. This book is a good place to start.
This was a good conversation starter for my husband and I. He left policing 8 years ago and is still struggling. We’ve had a lot of trauma discussions over the years, but he seemed more receptive to this one! I would recommend this book to any person who has served as an officer and their spouse.
No new information for me, but for those who have no knowledge on the topic, it’s is a basic, short read to bring awareness to the officer and/or family about the negative effects of the job. He offers encouragement and hope that healing is possible with a trauma-informed therapist and EMDR.
