I read the first book (full-length, not one of the shorts) initially in 2012. I don't know why but I didn't rate it very high at that time. I've been looking at reading this anthology since it came out which meant starting from the very beginning and also rereading the first story.
The only reason I can think why I only gave it 3 stars initially was because it does take you a little time to get into the story. Not the characters, no they grab the attention from the start. No what takes a little getting used to is the world they are living in. It's earth, but not. There are "others", but it's not always completely clear where they stand in society. There are organisations that have impact on the whole, but initially it's somewhat confusing who, what and where they all stand in the greater theme of things.
Apart from that, once it starts to make sense (because it does, lol) it's an epic tale of corruption, discovery, growth and change. Both in the cast of characters that increases as the stories continue, but also the evolving world around them. Lissa Kasey truly weaves an intricate and intriguing web that grabs you tight and draws you in!
Why were there no female vampires with speaking lines at all?
Other than this single question, this book was excellent paranormal soap opera.
Book 1 was a good intro to the world. Book 2 was more suspense than paranormal fantasy. Book 3 was in a location that was too cold. Book 4 was the best of the 5 books in this series. Book 5 had hawt MMM action but a bittersweet ending.
This is my second read thru of this series but last time I read each book separately and this time I decided to just read this because it included several of the short stories. Still love it and am looking forward to the new stories.
