Operation Teardrop

Rate this book
By 1944, the war has turned against Hitler’s Third Reich, and German cities lie in ruins from the constant bombing by the Allies. On every front, Allied forces are driving the Wehrmacht forces back.

Inspired by the success of his terror weapons, the V-1 and V-2 rockets, against cities in England, Hitler approved plans for a secret operation to retaliate against the United States by launching V-1 buzz bombs from the decks of German U-boats in an attack on New York City. In September of 1944, a clandestine operation involving the Abwehr, Kriegsmarine, and Luftwaffe, codenamed Operation Magpie, is launched.

Conflict within the Allies intelligence community leads to the precarious launch of Operation Teardrop, the U.S. Navy’s plan to stop the U-boats of Wolfpack Seawolf from succeeding. Espionage, U-boats, propaganda, and massive destruction are intertwined in the history behind the real Operation Teardrop.

Science fiction and classic crime novels have long been favorites of author K.C. Sivils. A fan of past noir masters such as Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, Sivils also enjoys the current generation of storytellers like Matt Abraham, Renee Pawlish and Alex P. Berg.

The combination of film noir and science fiction in director Ridley Scott’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s sci-fi classic Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep into the masterful Harrison Ford vehicle Blade Runner encouraged him to consume as much of both genre’s as possible.

When not working at his real job, Sivils enjoys his family, his dogs, writing and rocking out to classic rock bands like the Rolling Stones, New Wave rockers The Cars, and the Godfathers of Punk, the Ramones.

Spying counter spying in Germany near the end of WWII -4.5 stars

The characters in this historical fiction novel depict the desperation at the very end of the Third Reich. People in England, Norway, and France had to be careful just to stay alive. In the United Stated, traitors and spies would be given trial and hung if found guilty. While the characters indicated that it was common knowledge that the Nazis are going to lose, the German war machine did not let up the pressure. Fighting continued until one week after Hitler killed himself.

American Airmen courted English women, spies left behind enemy lines needed help to travel, and resistance members tried to outwit counter-spies. Characters were introduced with enough description that this reader felt occasional disappointment or satisfaction as the activities played out, no matter which side they were on. Clearly, war is awful; good people die. Sometimes bad people die. War grinds up everyone.

There are scenes of aerial combat, ships being sunk as well as both Gestapo and FBI agents doing a masterful job apprehending persons of interest. Romantic interest at a distance exchanging letters gave this story a credible feeling of what survival is like one day at a time.

Documented instances of spies, ships, V2 buzz bombs, and airplanes each contributed to the final outcome as we know it now, over 70 years later. Perhaps the most powerful statements come from seeing the individuals do what was expected -- mostly for a cause but sometimes only for personal gain.

Seeing the U-boats (submarines) "disfigured" to carry rockets intended to bomb cities in the United States gave a depth of feeling of love that German sailors for their boats. The German high command wanted to punish Americans in the say way that Germany had been pounded by aerial assault. It was possible to see that following orders to sink ships was "easy" while shooting individuals was gut-wrenching.

There appeared to be no awareness of German concentration camps; there was a clear understanding that if a person was found to be Jewish in Germany (and occupied France), his life expectancy was short. People who failed in their job or even voiced the widely expected fall of Hitler were expected to die of a bullet without a trial. The German system of triple-checking people who were assigned jobs showed a considerable distrust of people doing their assigned tasks.

K.C. Sivils is an author I have turned to for years for his historical train tales, various PI stories, and his Capital City SiFi world. I can't tell you how excited I was to see this novel based on actual happenings in WWII and set in Europe, the broad Atlantic, and northern North America. That is my favorite genre, and I have to say he has done a wonderful job of transporting my mind to that time, that place. Perhaps the most important part of this novel is the outlined Timeline of Actual Events at the closing of the book. It is immensely helpful in following this novel, as well as others I have read.

Operation Teardrop revolves around the life and deeds of the German submarine, U-1230 based in Horton, Norway, a country at that time in the hands of German troops. In Horton, we have Anita Pederson and Jakob Larsen. Anita's parents run a restaurant, which is a favorite feeding spot for the crews of the German subs who use that port to come and go back into war. Anita is a compassionate, loyal daughter - and a major link in the Norwegian Resistance. Sailors love to talk while they eat. Her primary contact in the resistance is Larsen. Her good friend, Paul Dietrich, is a Nazi Gestapo agent she met while they were both incarcerated.

We have Eric Gimple, a disillusioned American immigrant who decided to become a spy for his native Germany, to which he had returned as a young man, at the onset of the war. He is saddled, by his German handlers, with the companionship of American Billy Colepaugh, a heavy drinker and totally self-focused, as a mouthpiece for the first days in the United States while Gimple gets back into thinking and speaking in American English after several years away.

And we have the intriguing German plan to show America just how it feels to have their major cities of civilians bombed. It s a simple plan - they will attach launching equipment to the roof of a submarine, add a water wagon as a trailer, and fire V-1 rockets into NYC...

I received a free electronic copy of this novel from the author. I have read Operation Teardrop of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work.

Operation Teardrop - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

The eponymous wartime rescue mission by Major Giles Kendrick is set towards the end of WWII.
Meeting Elise his contact, the two head for Paris.
What happens as Giles heads into the 'lion's den' in Berlin? Will he complete his mission successfully?

Other characters, (including Detective Nelson Paine) on both sides of the conflict are introduced, developed and make an added dimension to the drama on land, sea and in the air.

Very long, but extremely detailed throughout, Operation Teardrop is based on actual events taking place in both Europe and the USA during WWII.
Try it for yourself and let KC Sivils take you there!

The author takes real history from World War II. He layers this with people who really could have had the roles he portrays. Then the story weaves together the lives of these people (some historical, some fictional) and lets the history happen to them. You'll get tugged in many directions as each day progresses forward and their actions cause a collision of their lives and duties. Lot of people, a lot of action, and real historical circumstances that bind them together.

If you ever wondered the detail of peoples lives behind the actual records of history, this is one possibility.

This lengthy novel carries multiple story arcs which are based upon non-fiction facts of 1944-1946. The story arcs contain both fictional and real people and their actions and exploits during the end of WWII. FYI-There are few happy endings to be found as one would expect of a wartime thriller. I appreciate the actual time line of events that is at the end of this great book.

I was a little surprised that it has no references to concentration camps or POWs.

Disclaimer: I received this ebook from BookFunnel and this is my honest and freely given opinion.

Good WWII fiction based on real facts

Good WWII story involving Army Air Force and Navy elements against Nazi U-boats retrofitted to launch V-1 rockets against cities on the US East coast. New York City was the prime target.

Good interplay between a Kriegsmarine officer and his newlywed wife, between an English spy and his French handler, between an American pilot and his English girlfriend, and between a disillusioned Gestapo officer and a Norwegian Resistance fighter.

It is a very entertaining and interesting book. A very enjoyable book to read.

This is by far the most intricately plotted and far reaching book I’ve read by this
author. I have to say he pulled it off brilliantly.

The detailed characters drew me quickly into each of the storylines. The era came
to life on multiple continents, in varied societies and from many perspectives.
Great storytelling that satisfactorily brings everything together for the finale

I was a child when WW11 ended. I only knew what I was told by relatives who were involved and what I learned in history classes or read. This was the best of such books. It follows a number of characters as they become involved in the war and their part in it. Highly recommended. The characters will speak to you. Mark of a good writer with great imagination mixed with actual history.

A Riveting Historical Read

If you are a history buff and enjoy reading history in a novel form this WWII fiction is a must read! You cannot tell where the fact and fiction begin and end but aside from many of the characters, nearly every fact is true. I was completely engrossed throughout. Never a dull moment!

The twist and turns of war personnel are hard to know

The idea that Hitler would actually attempt to use V 1 s to bomb American cities is hard to even contemplate. Was that even real?

The author spins a tale of romance and military battles. Concentrating on the final stages of WWII including the spies that entered the US. Though there are some technical errors the book is a good read.

okay-not great

There are some blatant technical errors in the book, like running the diesel engines at a depth of 300 feet make it hard to ignore the author’s lack expertise.
