Playing with God: Meditations on a Play-Based Life

Rate this book
Playing with God is a book about Spiritual growth, written with a particular kind of Christian in mind-- one who feels "used up, burned out, worn down, and done in," and who have become weary of trying to be a "good Christian." This book offers a new paradigm for the Spiritual life--one which sees Him less as the "Criticizer in Chief," and more as a committed Father who loves us unconditionally and wants us to join Him in play.
Playing with God explores what Jesus meant when he said, "You must become like a child to enter the Kingdom of Heaven." The goal of spiritual growth is not to make us mature and independent, but childlike and God-dependent. We become as children by engaging in the one activity most associated with childhood--play
To play is to engage in any activity that we do for its own sake, not for some larger goal. If we try to draw closer to God so He can reward us or because we fear His punishment if we don't, we are not playing with God. We play with God when we seek to be with Him for the joy of Him alone. Like a child seeking out the company of their parents because they love them, we seek out God for the same reason. Knowing His protection and security is always with us, this frees us to view the rest of life as play, too.
The book discusses the true meaning of spiritual maturity, what it is to be an adult and child, and the connection between work and play. Playing with God also explores different kinds of activities in life, such as work, worship, conflict, and construction, and how they can become games under God's protection. Finally, Playing with God defines object of the game of life, which is not what most people think.
