Two identical murders, thirty years apart.

Thirty years ago, gangland enforcer Archie Boothroyd was brutally slain in an apparent ritual killing. The case was never a high priority for the police - after all, it meant one less gangster on the streets – and his murderer was never caught.

Now, almost three decades later, when Paul Bradley – a close friend of Boothroyd’s – is murdered in exactly the same way, DCI Jane Phillips and the Major Crimes Unit are called in to investigate. Is Bradley’s death the work of a copycat? Or has the original killer finally returned?

As the team delve deeper, they find themselves immersed in the dark underworld of gangland Manchester, where kidnapping, torture and murder are an everyday hazard.

When a third body is found mutilated in exactly the same way, Phillips and the team realise they are in a race against time to catch the killer. But what they don’t understand is the next victim could be one of their own.

Can Phillips find the murderer before they strike again? Or is she about to lose everything she holds dear to the Deadly Night?

Much as I enjoy these books I am running out of patience with Phillips! One or two of the things she got away with here were a bit unbelievable as were one or two things she was hauled over the coals for. The previous book was much better.
I am interested to see whether she’s learned any lessons in the next one though!

Although I did not read the previous books in the series I could understand this story without problems. Deadly Night has a great plot, is well written, and the main character - Jane - has to rethink her goals in this story which has dead-end leads and quite a lot of twists and turns that kept me attached to the book till the end. The characters are not what they seemed to be and there are a lot of lies and deceit that are linked to the murders.

So, this is apparently the seventh book in the Jane Phillips series. I had no idea when I started reading it that it was the seventh book or that it was a series, clueless over here. But I did know it was fantastic!

The book was seamless in the respect that it didn’t feel like it was the seventh book and that I was missing out on things. I felt that there was enough information to read the book as if it was the first book in the series. I never felt my enjoyment was lost. I met Jane, her team Jones, Bovalino, and Entwistle, and I just loved them, and even though they are a ready-made team and they have done six other books together, it seriously didn’t feel like I was missing anything. I mean, I do want to go back and read more as I have garnered that Fox is not a nice character. When something happens to one of the team, my heart sank. I was right there with the character, suffering with them, even after just meeting them! It seemed that a couple of our characters in this book appeared and in the others, but again, you can easily read this book without having read the others. Because I did. (I will stop repeating myself now ;))

I still felt the disdain for characters I feel like I should have done. I felt the love for the characters. I adored Adam, which I think you’re meant to and anytime he was on the page, he just made me smile even though you could see him struggling with Jane and the way she was. And from what I can gather, Carter was a new member of the leadership team and he was just fantastic and he had Jane’s back completely.

I love the team, they were fantastic, they had Phillips is back even when she was going completely off-piste. And when she did hurt someone, which she probably shouldn’t have done but totally deserved it, it was fascinating to see how this team worked with. I just sat back and enjoyed the show, the story, and the way the author wrote it!

I loved that the author answered all the questions I had about the murders, about how they linked back to something that happened 30 years ago. It wasn’t an answer I was expecting, but it just goes to show you the skill of OMJ Ryan. He created this case, which starts in such a shocking way, and has you hooked, craving for the answers and the book doesn’t let go even after you have them!

I really hope that this isn’t the last book of the series, because I’ve only just discovered this series, and although yes, I have six books to go back and catch up on I want there to be the hope that I have more to read in the future. (I wrote this in April and just found there is another book woohoo!!)

I just found this book thrilling! I devoured it in a couple of sittings and the story never waned. I’ve never felt bored. I was constantly thinking along with the book. What would happen? Would this happen? Is it this person? is it that person? – all the way through the investigation. I was right there with them. It was entertaining, which is what you want from a book.

Yeah, I think you can guess overall I just really enjoyed the fantastic book. And as I say, I do hope it continues I’m definitely not ready to let Jane disappear from my life.

DCI Jane Phillips and her team are investigating the killing of a known gangster whose murder mirrors that of one from thirty years ago. Because it is the same MO and the first victim was also a gangster, not to mention friends with the current victim, the team can't deny that this could be the same killer. The brutality in which the murders were carried out aligns with the gangland connection which itself makes it tough for the authorities to get any clear answers from the relatives and associates of the victims. The family of the current victim won't even acknowledge that the man had shady dealings, fooling no one. And one of their top suspects is also one of their slipperiest - nothing ever sticks to him, and yet again he may be untouchable.

As if it wasn't hard enough to get anywhere with the investigation, a harrowing attack is carried out against someone close to Jane. Is she being warned off looking too deeply into the gang members? After all, how much focus can she give the case when she might lose someone? And what will the perpetrators do next if she doesn't back off?

Gangs and underworld dealings aren't my favorite subjects, but it's manageable in this story. Jane's personal storyline helps to balance out all the nefariousness of the criminals and highlight how decent people like her have to interact with society's worst and somehow come out unscathed. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series, which will hopefully be a little less gangster!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy of Deadly Night, the seventh novel to feature DCI Jane Phillips of Greater Manchester Police’s Major Crimes Unit.

When Paul Bradley is shot dead in his home, Jane thinks the crime scene is familiar and soon links it to the murder of Archie Boothroyd I. 1993. Bradley and Boothroyd were friends and when a third friend is found dead in the same way Jane and the team find themselves deep in Manchester’s gangland and it’s culture.

I thoroughly enjoyed Deadly Night, which is an exciting read, full of twists, turns and tension. I hesitate to call it a police procedural because procedure is the last thing on Jane’s mind when someone close to her is attacked.

I liked the premise of the novel, thirty years between identical crimes and the ensuing question of the murderer’s identity, copycat or the same person? It lives up to the promise with Jane contending with not just the murders but gangland feuds and tit for tat violence. As a bonus the author brings the violence close to home and throws in an IPCC investigation into her behaviour. Honestly, there’s hardly a minute to catch a breath. It all culminates in a satisfying conclusion with all the bad guys getting their comeuppance, but how that is achieved is even better because even the good guys can get a little underhand (in a legal way, obviously) to bring the case home.

It’s fair to say that Jane loses the plot in this novel and isn’t thinking straight. It is very well done and very relatable, but a bit frustrating for the investigation and the reader when her actions could derail it. Still, as expected, it all works out well, despite some heart stopping moments.

Deadly Night is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

The seventh book in this wonderful series, Deadly Night brings with it another thrilling case for DCI Jane Phillips and her team to solve.

Ryan takes the reader into the seedy and darker side of Manchester where a spate of gangland murders, reopens a cold case from 30 years prior. What follows is a twisty fast paced rollercoaster ride where once again I was completely absorbed and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough! There were out loud gasps for moments that draw you even deeper into the story, followed by quietly hissed yeses and fist pumps in shared moments of victory!

I just love the team of who make up the Major Crimes Unit in this series, their dynamics and how they stand by Jane even when her course of action doesn’t necessary align with the establishments protocols. I also love that Jane never throws them under the bus and always takes responsibility for her actions. She is sassy and forthright, but is dedicated to her team, the job and whatever it takes to get results.

Deadly Night is another perfectly written and executed piece of work showcasing Ryan’s talent and the series as a whole, is a masterclass in the police procedural/crime thriller genre. You really come to care about each of the recurring characters and what happens to them.

Whilst there has been no word of whether this in fact the final instalment in the series, as a reader I was left with some sense of finality, but I’m hopeful that there will be more to come.

*Deadly Night can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend you reading these in order to fully appreciate how amazing this series and it’s characters really are*

Review copy was received from . This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I really enjoy the Detective Jane Phillips series.  She has progressed over the series in her career and personal relationships.  Her new boss is amazing and deals with all the administrative and politics things which would hamper her ability to solve cases.

The current cases are connected with one from 30 years past in their method.  The team goes to work trying to find a connection.  Most of the players seem to be criminals / mobsters.  They just aren't nice people and all seem pretty smug like they can't be caught and have expensive lawyers too.   Jane takes some crazy chances and while I know she wanted to solve the case and catch the criminals, I didn't like how dangerous some things were.

She is settled into a relationship with Adam.  He wants to move in together and she keeps putting him off.  We never really learn why.  They eventually work things out and she actually takes a sabbatical to spend more time with him.

The cases were not easily solved for many reasons.  The criminals are long experienced and some are crafty. Again they have crack legal representation.  But once the detectives knew who committed the crimes, they could go after the weak link. One instance was helped by Jane predicting who might be a future victim and putting eyes on them.  So the cases were solved by smart evidence and data collection in the end which was quite satisfying.

I just love this series, and was delighted when I found it on Fantastic Fiction. As a fellow Manc, I was transported back to my youth, with all the places I used to visit and go to school, albeit it has changed considerably since then. I think Manchester has an underlying dark side and perhaps my memories are unreliable!

Saying that this is the BEST in the series, Jane is brilliant in MCU, and her team, and thankfully the wily old Fox has gone onto greater things because she is typical of the hierarchy, only out for herself.

In this book a gangster has been murdered and it comes to light that the same modus operandi was used in one 30 years ago. It is virtually the same killing. Jane is thrown headlong into this case and into the depths of the gangland underworld. While a lot of her bosses don’t agree with her methods, she is like a dog at a bone, and willing to risk everything to put the evil thugs behind bars. Unfortunately things take a wrong turn and Jane is forced to look at things in a different way.

Her team are brilliant and support her, but them upstairs have different ideas.

I absolutely love this series, and sailed through this book very quickly.

I’m hoping Owen is going to continue with the series, as it’s such a good one.

Out with a bang.

It looked familiar, but she had never had a case like this.
Eye for an eye? Tooth for a tooth? Weird!
Looking at the male victim, shot through one eye and one front tooth removed. He was dead, but why the bizarre method.
The autopsy confirmed that death was instant thanks to the bullet and the tooth removed post mortem.
Jane had found the reason the scene looked familiar, thirty years ago a local gangster, drug pusher etc. Had died from exactly the same method. Why a repeat after there decades?
Now she had Paul Bradbury, similarly employed, who wanted him gone? Were the cases connected? Jane was a stickler about no such thing as coincidence, so what was the link?
The other common factor was both murders had taken place during a firework display, the first on Bonfire Night and the latest on 4th of July celebrations - a new excuse to cause a racket.
Jane's boyfrriend of one year, Adam, gets caught out in the mess and the A&E doctor ends up in ICU.
Very good read, some old faces & some new ones all contribute to an excellent novel.

This book started out running and was compelling from the first page! It was extremely well written, and the plot and sub plots very original. The characters have further been developed and they are like old friends. I love this team and how they work together, and back each other up. Even when things became very personal for DCI Jane Phillips, they all supported her and helped her stay on her feet. I have loved reading this book, as I have the whole series. This book can be read as a standalone, but to really know where the characters started, and where they'ended up until now, i suggest starting from the beginning! And the ending!! To say I highly recommend this book is an understatement! Thank you to the author, OMJ Ryan, Incubator Books, and booksprout for the advanced copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review!.

November 5, 1993 Archie Boothroyd is murdered during a fireworks display that covers the killers tracks.

Current day. Detective Jane Phillips is home with her boyfriend Adam, a surgeon. She gets a call from her team that gangster Paul Bradley has been shot during the fireworks display. He’s killed the same way as Boothroyd was.

The investigation leads to other gang members from the 90s. Is this a gang related killing or is someone trying to make it look like one?

Who is responsible for these murders and will the team be able to stop them before others are killed.

This is my first book by this author. I haven’t read any of the other books in this series but didn’t feel lost. I look forward to reading future installments.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange my honest review.

The seventh book in the series of Detective Jane Phillips. I absolutely love this series. This book was compelling from the first page! It was extremely well written with a great plot and fully well developed main character - Jane. There were quite a lot of twists and turns that kept me hooked totally. I turned page after page till the very end. This story moves along at the usual quick pace and I am sure you would be hooked from the start as usual. I read this thoroughly in 2 days only. This book can be read as a standalone, but to really know where the characters started, and where they'ended up until now. I suggest starting from the beginning. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. Deadly Night is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

I love this series and this latest instalment is another gripping read. This time, we have some gang-related killings which seem to be linked to a murder that is 30 years old. Jane and her team in MCU are investigating but this time, things unfortunately become more personal for Jane.

I love this team, the characters and the banter amongst them. However, Jane is quite reckless in this story and in danger of putting the investigation at risk. The story moves along at the usual quick pace and I was totally hooked from the start as usual and read this in 1 day. If I needed any crime to be investigated, you can be sure that I would want Jane and this team involved from the start.

I won't give any spoilers but the ending...

A great read but one annoying thing…..

I found this to be a great read but found there was one annoying thing that distracted from the book. The police officer called Entwistle has been given the nickname of ‘Whistler’. I don’t know why but it really jars for me- every time I read it, I cringed a little bit. It jarred in all the other books he is mentioned in too- enough that it is my overriding thought after finishing it. Perhaps I am alone in my thoughts- I clearly needed to get it off my chest!

Unfortunately, this book was only okay for me. I couldn't connect at all with the characters (especially Jane) and the mystery was only somewhat interesting - enough for me to keep reading till the end. Perhaps if I had started the series with book 1, I would have felt more of a connection to Jane, but it just didn't happen in this book.

I did like the ending and it made me start to like Jane more.

So I've just finished this hopefully not finale book in the series. These books have been amazing books believable characters and grip your attention from the start. Dci Jayne Phillips cracks another case but not before her partner is found seriously stabbed in her garden as warning to back off. If you love a good detective book you must read this full series you will. It be disappointed. I hope there will be many more books from this auther..

Excellent police procedural

Read this over a couple of days. It hits the ground running and doesn't stop, an enjoyable read with lots of twists and turns, well written and edited, some I've read I can't believe they get to publishing stage without anyone noticing all the errors which detracts from the story. OMJ Ryan was a new Author for me and I'm so glad I decided to read this series as all 7 books so far have been excellent and I would wholeheartedly recommend.

Book 7 did not disappoint. I couldn't wait for this to be released and read this book in one sitting. Being reunited with the characters whom you get to know throughout the series was fabulous. As a 7th book in a series, it kept me hooked, turning page after page as much as the first book did. Please tell me there will be more.

This is possibly one of my favourite books of the Chief Inspector Jane Philips series. Possibly because one of the very early characters gets his comeuppance. Thrilling from page 1 right the way through.

Severe lack of Bov and his humour but considering the tone of the book understandable
