Anna Fienberg grew up in a house filled with books. Her mother was a teacher librarian who relished stories as much as chocolates. 'On Sunday mornings we'd all lie in bed with our books, lost in magical wardrobes, witches’ spells, genies’ magic… What we were going to read next was just as important in our family as what was for lunch!' says Anna.

Anna started writing stories when she was eight, but never imagined being an author. She studied psychology, fascinated by the dark world of dreams. She gave up counseling after an unfortunate incident with an enraged man and a chair (he missed!), began writing and scored the best job in the world. 'Working for School Magazine was a treat,' Anna says. 'I couldn't believe you could get paid for sitting back comfortably in your chair, cappuccino in hand, reading over a thousand books a year. Heaven!' Of course, as an editor she also had to write reviews and articles, stories and plays. One of those stories for School Magazine later became her first book.

In the first book of the much-adored Tashi series, children are introduced to Jack’s extraordinary imaginary friend Tashi, a gnome-like character from a place far away. Brave Tashi tells adventurous tales of being sold to a warlord and escaping on a swan. This little hero has to be clever to outsmart giants, ghosts, demons, and witches that stand in his way. Young readers will be captivated by Tashi’s tall tales of courage and daring. ‘
This book was magical.
I had honestly never heard of this series, and after reading it I am very disappointing with myself. I feel like I have been living under a rock whilst something magical happened around me.
The moment I picked this book up, I couldn’t put it down. I was so engrossed and excited, I didn’t want it to end. The plus side is that this is just the first book in a wonderful series so there are many more magical stories to enjoy.
This wonderful book contains to amazing stories for young readers to enjoy. The terrific stories are perfectly complimented by Kim Gamble’s fantastic illustrations, adding an extra layer to this fabulous book.
Anna and Barbara Fienberg have created a truly magical story, and now that I have it in my life, it is easy to see why it is a favourite with young readers.
I honestly don’t have a bad word to say about this book. If you have a young reader in your life, I think it is time you introduce them to Tashi.
Tashi by Anna and Barbara Fienberg is a must have for all young readers and their families.

I read this book with my daughter. It was a surprisingly quick read at 62 pages (but most of each page is covered in gorgeous pictures). My daughter is still all about the pictures and easing her into chapter books has been difficult as it is so hard to find chapter books that are equal parts words and pictures while still introducing the higher vocab. This was a short, but satisfying read for her.

My daughter was so excited when we started as she said "Tashi! I remember seeing this on tv". Okay. That so didn't help me any. We started reading and to be honest I was a little confused about what/who Tashi was. Thankfully the author wrote a little blurb at the start that says "Tashi began when Barbara (her mother) was telling me how, when she was a child, she used to tell whoppers. Tall stories. Creative fibs. And kids would crowd around, dying to hear the latest tale.....and over many cups of tea we cooked up Tashi". So Tashi is the kid with lots of tall tales and this one was all about how he/she(?) killed the last dragon. BAD TASHI I SAY!!!!

Cute little Australian novel that kids seem to adore. Probably best suited for around 6-9 years of age - but really kids (irrespective of age) should be allowed to read whatever the hell they like :-P.

That was nothing like what I remember, still very enjoyable though. It does make me want to re-read some of my childhood favourites since my memory doesn't seem to be very accurate.

Library brought this book as a part of a "Around the World" diverse books projec to rep Australia. So I read it just outbid curiosity and I thought this was a humourous, loveable book that kids would enjoy. Read it in 15-20 min and was interested in reading what happened next.

hi everyone this my review on the first tashi book.
after i read it i was very pleased. The one thing i loved the most was that the main message was that no matter who tells u a person of the street that something isn't true, just trust the ones that you love because they know you the best.
when this message was portrayed in this book is when tashi's grandma tells him that theres a dragon that lives in the cave on top of the mountain so he decides to some how go and find the dragon and he tells some of his friends and they say oh yeah sure like are you kidding me. so tashi believes them and looses his drive to find this dragon so then when its time for dinner and tashi's gran sees he's upset and so he follows hi passion about finding the dragon.
but i can't say anymore because i don't want to spoil it for you
so i encourage you guys to read this book because this book is not big at all
i finished this book in a couple hours so i really enjoyed it
and thank you for reading my review.

This… was very disappointing.

While I am aware that I’m not the target demographic, I do really enjoy kids fiction, especially fantasy. So it’s not completely out of the blue that I find this disappointing.

There’s not a lot of substance, the fantasy world is in the same world as the regular one but a country over?? And I don’t know, the stories themselves were… okay? Also how does Tashi get into so many hijinks when he’s only a child? (There’s 22 books in this series).

Additionally, I was not the biggest fan of the way the story is told? The framing device is Tashi telling stories of his adventures to Jack (a regular boy from non-magic land), and/or Jack then telling those tales to his parents over dinner. Which, okay.

But the amount of times someone said “it was like this” made me want to bang my head. Once or twice? Fine. Kids can talk like that. But 20-30 times a story? When said story is not all that long to begin with? No thank you.

The second story is not much better, either. *sigh*

It’s such a pity because I really wanted to like this (it’s a very popular, very classic series) But I just couldn’t.

I stumbled upon this book second-hand and am so glad I did. Published in Australia in 1995 and I believe co-written with her mother, this Tashi book is a perfect first chapter book. The words are simple, but the adventure is big. There are pictures on every single page and it can be read in one sitting, but still feels like a chapter book. (Which, of course, feels like a very big deal as readers transition from short reader books into these)
My girls loved this book which included two tales of Tashi the gnome. The first he is stolen from home by an evil warlord and in the second he tricks a mean old dragon. Be warned though, your kids will want to hear more Tashi tales when they read this... so stock up!
Unfortunately, our library system here only has one copy of each of these books so good luck tracking them down here in the states.

This short little book, Tashi, is the perfect introduction to chapter books or for the reluctant reader. The illustrations are beautiful and seemed very engaging for the kids. We were able to read this in under 30 minutes.

The story of Jack and his imaginary friend Tashi kept the kids immersed in the fun over the top tales that Tashi told. While reading this aloud, I began comparing it closely to Aesop's fables and having a lesson learned from what the dragon did.

I was incredibly pleased to find out that this was book one in a good-sized series. The kids have asked me to locate the others. While we continue to hunt these gems down the kids have requested to reread this over many times.

I am prereading children Literature before handing them off to my kids. This one makes the cut as I found nothing inappropriate with it and would recommend it.

While I thought it was imaginative and creative, it was a little elusive to me if there was supposed to be a bigger meaning to the plot. The main theme is story telling, but the last page caught my attention. It was a picture and all the antagonists were lurking around. Based off of the written story, I was a little confused as to it’s meaning. I could make educated guesses at the author’s intent, but the precision wasn’t there for me. Other than that, good for girls and boys and a 1st-2nd grade read probably.

Celebrating 30 years of magic, Tashi still sparkles with imagination and charm. This hardback edition honours the iconic character whose origin story - washed ashore in a mysterious land, much like the Japanese folk hero Momotaro - sets the stage for endless fantastical adventures. Tashi's tales, shared with his wide-eyed human friend Jack, brim with giants, ghosts, and clever trickery. With Kim Gamble’s enchanting illustrations breathing life into each story, Tashi remains a timeless Australian read-aloud favourite for younger readers. Perfect for sparking curiosity and courage in equal measure.

I started the Tashi series as a first chapter book read aloud with my toddler son. These short stories can be read in one sitting. They are full of adventure and mythical creatures, as told by Tashi to his friend Jack. It held my toddler’s attention from start to finish. My only recommendation for any new editions is to include colour images to further grasp young readers attention for a first chapter book.

The way Tashi says ‘it was like this.’ throughout the book got a bit annoying. I also though Jack was rude to his dad in the book.

A simple, quick little beginning chapter book. I think I read it entirely within 15 minutes. The illustrations are a great support to the story. I imagine the love comes with reading extensively from the series, as their isn't enough here to connect you with the characters very deeply. Although beginning readers may love it for its brevity and chapter book feel.

It was a favourite series of mine as a child. Sometimes books loose their magic when you get older, but not Tashi. I visited it again recently when going through my old books, and was pleasantly surprised that I still really liked it. Mind you this is probably speaking from a sentimental point of view.

Definitely an easy read, would be a wonderful book for children learning to read.

The first in a series of children's books about a boy and his imaginary friend who comes from a land far away. Tasha, is both adorable and with aigret heart. The book contains two stories, and then ends with a hook for the next story in the next book.

What a delightful book. I love the story, Jack has a new friend called Tashi who tells him wonderful stories. Dad always asks the wrong questions. The illustrations are brilliant. I’m giving this book to my granddaughter for Christmas and I’m sure she’ll love it.

A short, more-picture-book-than-chapter book about a sort-of magical boy who flies into town on a swan and tells another boy who befriends him all sorts of tall tales about dragons and warlords and giants. It's cute and the illustrations are pretty great.
