When Senator Todd Bembridge campaigned against the Rights of Magical Persons Act, every Witch, Vampire, Faerie and “Other” on the census developed a motive for murder. Too bad Astrid Stone is paid to keep him alive.
As an Agent of the Corpus Christi, Texas branch of Terrestrial Affairs, she’s used to handling trouble. After a week of networking vampires to rehabs and soothing angry ghosts, standing between a politician and his magical stalker feels almost like a vacation. She didn’t vote for the guy, but she’ll keep him breathing. Especially when the detail comes with distractingly interesting FBI Agent David Acton.
But then the stalker makes their move. Now Astrid, David and Bembridge are trapped in a ritualistic game to the death, and the stakes are higher than anyone can imagine. Separated from her team, Astrid must out-think a desperate mage before all of Corpus Christi pays the price. Everything’s riding on…STONE'S THROW.
Some of the best, most intelligent writing I've read in UF. Fascinating, complex story arc and unique characters. Highly, highly recommend. Read The Witch's Book and The Vampire Belle shorts first for background. I really, really like this book!
I never give five stars but I almost did for this one. Going back to read 2-3 prior stories but not necessary to enjoy and understand this series start
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Stone's Throw by Chelsea Gaither is a paranormal/urban fantasy novel. It's the first book from Terrestrial Affairs.
If you are a newbie in this genre then this book is for you. It has a simple plot that is very explanatory. From the beginning till the end the author explains in a detailed way every term that is mentioned. That was very helpful because otherwise, I wouldn't be able to keep up.
The story is incredible. It started simply describing the situation but as it progressed it became suspenseful and spectacular. The way it is written gives you a real feeling of what is happening. The magical scenes were astonishing. I have never read something like that before. The characters were amazing as well. Astrid was my favorite, I loved her attitude and that she wasn't afraid to speak her mind. My second favorites were the two magical ladies, for some reason I imagined them as old ladies who shared their wisdom. The part that I loved was the epic "battle".
If you like urban fantasy then I highly recommend you to read Stone's Throw. I can't wait to see what happens next with Astrid.
An urban fantasy read full of exciting vibes. A very complex story with lot of characters, new readers aren’t recommended this book. There’re a lot of exciting scenes that will give you goosebumps to complete the story.
The characters will twist your reading pace, yes they’ll. The way everyone hides themselves till the end was the most intriguing part of the book.
I would definitely recommend this book to the ones who genuinely like reading novels not to the beginners. It was a mindful read.
Complicated, intricate and well woven - this is a story that just keeps MOVING. Written with a lyrical flair and an softly turned phrases, it speaks in creative tones that captivate as much as describe.
I truly enjoyed this narrative, but fair warning - you have got to pay ATTENTION. Some of the paragraphs are a little long, but don’t you dare let your eyes drift, or you might miss something incredibly important, as it really is just that fast and eventful.
First person, single POV, happy for now, urban fantasy.
The pacing is nice, the world building is well done and interesting. The characters are consistent in their behavior, not yanked around by plot requirements. Definitely worth a read.
The book could have benefitted from the services of a copy editor: the past tense of 'to lead' is 'led,' not 'lead,' for instance. Protean is used instead of protein, and I believe imitate should be irritate at one point. But these are small, easily corrected blemishes. Aside from them, the story has good bones and is nicely fleshed out.
First novel I have read by this artist and honestly I am so impressed. I kind of expected the usual fluff piece of urban fantasy, but no this artist blew me away. This is an intelligent, well crafted story that you will not want to miss. Storyline is solid, characters well developed. I have already ordered the next, so I am off to my reading corner. I received this novel through StoryOrigins, and my thoughts are my own!
Good pace, great plot, very descriptive, and likable characters. Good vs. evil, but too black and white. And a story in desperate need of better proofreading. Even spellcheck would catch many of the errors. A grammar checker would help, especially with punctuation errors.
A hidden gem, I really enjoyed this. Great characters, great world building, sense of mystery, and a villain you can empathise with their motive, but not their methods.
