Tragedy strikes in threes: Her Sister. Her Mother. Her Father. Now a killer returns home—to claim his next victim.
Davina Ravine isn’t looking for trouble. Not from the hot new detective who keeps falsely arresting her. Not from gossipy locals who whisper about her. And certainly not from her father, who repeatedly tries to kill her.
All Davina wants is to make enough money to keep her and her mentally unstable father afloat.
But when you’re an amateur psychic—living in a small town like Daybreak Falls—trouble follows you everywhere... Like when a teenage girl goes missing and the girl’s desperate parents beg you for help.
Despite her inability to control her visions, Davina focuses on the girl’s keepsakes scattered in front of her, closes her eyes, and searches her mind for clues.
Only, instead of seeing the teenager, Davina uncovers a connection to her own sister—who vanished fifteen years ago.
ONE GONE-MORE BEFORE LONG: Davina Ravine must unravel the truth behind her tragic childhood to stop a serial killer. Book one of Kaylie Hunter’s new crime thriller series.
This is the book I have been looking for with the house that has a facade on it that looks old but is really nice if you enter a panel through the front part that looks like its falling down. I loved this series
I really liked this. And the characters are so colorful and full of life and extremely odd! Lol. Seriously. Olivia, her best friend, is way over the top and so scattered. At first I was like is she for real? And then Noah, her childhood friend, is a paramedic and still hangs with his Mom almost every day. She seems like a really wonderful person so I think she is hiding something for sure. Lol Bernadette, the grandmother, Is a psychic too and very ketchy. Stone, the new detective, is by the book but endearing in a way. Austin, her high school crush, is too smooth and I seriously thought he was the kidnapper. Francis, her Father is possessed. Demonic even and is trying to kill her. Lance Dodd is her Father I think, not Francis. He might be the bad guy. Since he is the one who seems to soothe her Father and something is just off there. And we don't know because this book ends in a freaking CLIFFHANGER!!! I was so absorbed and then, bam. The end! The 2nd book better be out or I will be pissed. If I thought there was a cliffhanger, I would have checked first to see! But I really enjoyed it, I remembered everyone's name and was totally engrossed. Some pieces were tied up but the most urgent one was not!!! And I personally think, Raina, her missing sister, is still alive and probably the evil force behind everything. I hope not but she was not a good person and I think she is controlling the Father if she is. Oh well. I am going to go look now and if the next book isn't out yet, you'll be hearing a very loud, very angry, scream!
The Character Olivia is driving me crazy! I’m actually enjoying the book quite a bit - but this Olivia character is distracting in all the wrong ways. I think your writing style is captivating and engaging, but I can’t for the life of me see the use of Olivia. I will admit I have yet to finish the book, but unless Olivia’s character arc is that she sacrifices herself in the end of the novel to save someone other that herself I believe all of the attention spent on her wardrobe and possessions and pampered nature and privileged upbringing is such a terrible waste of time. The collective false character reaction of her husband and all the lowly townsfolk thinking “isn’t she adorable” is wearing sooooooo thin! She’s selfish, spoiled and actually sadly tremendously underperforming-especially given the opportunities with which she’s grown up. Anyone married to someone that works hard will know there is NO WAY a husband thinks she’s adorable when she doesn’t work and he’s forced to either watch the kids unexpectedly for the day, or -SURPRISE - she’s disappeared -SO now he has to feed them, dress them and deliver them safely to daycare because his wife took off unexpectedly.I mean who leaves burned baking dishes in the outdoor kiddie pool, scuffing the ground thinking someone else should really clean that up?? She isn’t cute, she isn’t spunky - she really stinks
This book has it all humor, mystery and woowoo. I love a paranormal element in my mystery. There’s so much going on and while the main mystery is solved we are still left with who is the bad guy AND what is going on with Francis.
I can not wait for the next book. I’m so glad I took a chance on this. It was fast paced and at times I was laughing out loud. Such a great cast of characters with a very unique story line.
I did enjoy the story for the most part. I did struggle at times staying engaged with the story. I wouldn't say I was necessarily bored but when I'm really into a story, I can't put it down and I had to take breaks. I know Olivia is supposed to be this fun quirky best friend but at times I found her obnoxious. Maybe at some point I'll come back to the second story but at this point I don't know I didn't love it enough to continue.
Score.. New author to me plus a fabulous start to a new series. This book was cray cray... Love me some cray cray.. You were bounced all over the place from serious subject matter then next your laughing so hard then totally engrossed in the present and past storyline along with dying to know the what is going to happen in the future.
If you like paranormal books with a great heroine, great secondary characters, slow burn romance and a evil bad guy then try this series.
This was an excellent book. Compelling, gripping, and even funny sometimes, just to break the tension. I'm looking forward to reading the next installment.
I liked the ways the characters were developed and the author has you cheering for them. Loved the cliff hanger at the end to entice you to the next book.
26% in and I’m a bit conflicted. This is a small town with a new cop in town. He keeps arresting the town psychic. Meanwhile there is a teenager missing. Serious business, but somehow the main character and her friends keep finding themselves in funny ‘haha’ situations. There is a lot of giggling, scoffing around and clumsiness. High school vibes etc. I do hope this book will settle down and make up its mind. I do hope the best friend will go on a long holiday without cell reception.
Onwards we go
41% quote: Everyone laughed. Only Olivia would be jealous over something like this. “Dear,” Mrs. Paulson said to Olivia while still chuckling, “you are a treasure.”
I’m almost there, the point of quitting. The amount of grinning, chuckling, smirking, laughing is getting to me. I can understand why Francis is the way he is. It’s like Alice in Wonderland with the Cheshire Cat.
Ps I’ve got a suspicion who the actual bad guy is.
Around the 59% my interest picked up but now at the 83% I can’t be bothered.
It's more of a 3.5 stars for me, but due to the good writing and interesting set, I chose 4. I also read the 2nd, but skipped-read the last half.
So the good: Engaging writing. Good backstory. Excellent worldbuilding. Wonderful friendships. Characters are alive and well-rounded and recognisable, each unique, always acting within character, which is good writing and shows attention to detail. Which I loved. I felt fear, nausea, terror, curiosity, interest, etc. The story was really engaging.
I loved loved loved the good heart and placid nature and loyal main character. She was strong in herself, not because the book tells us, but it was demonstrated. She rarely needed a man to save her, and showed appreciation when someone stepped up to help out. She had a support circle, but gave back in equal measure. Again... attention to detail.
All in all, a wonderful book.
Now, the bad and the reason I skipped-read the last half of the second book: It got too repetitive. The "events" were just the same o'le same after a while. Accidents, pain, scratches, burning, bruises, hit heads, etc. Someone gets hurt, the paramedics check them out, the police hang around. Boring.
The police never truly did policework. They were always late to the party, stood around quietly, until everyone has discussed things, then jump in and scream "this is a police investigation!". The hero never really featured! All other characters are now known and beloved by us, the readers. But we know NOTHING about the detective. I don't care for him at all. I can't even remember his name! There were much more chemistry between Davina and Austen. And the way he kept on saying "I don't believe in this psychic stuff". He's THERE, all the time, for almost every "psychic" event, but kept on repeating how he doesn't believe in it? Then suddenly tells her, oh, but I actually like you? Really? That's how you show it? Could've fooled me!
I love supernatural stories, but if it's a human with a human body, I expect the person to act, feel and be human. No ordinary human could be poisoned with only minutes to live, then face severe tummy troubles (with no dehydration even!), then literally drown (in dirty water) and brought back to life, then walk miles on an injured foot, laughing and chatting and singing, then find a teenager that same night by searching and walking some more! The majority of us, probably all of us, would've landed up in hospital after the severe tummy problems due to the poisoning, or at the very least, after the drowning and taking in dirty water into the lungs. It's just logical. Which felt like staged events to make her seem "more" than she is. It was unnecessary. She was already enough, without having to add to her. It fell flat and created the opposite effect. Disengagement from someone so inhuman we don't even need to feel sympathy anymore. She'll just live through everything and anything.
Why did everything had to happen within a few days? It caused unnecessary issues, stress and caused the reader to feel less engaged, less caring, less involved. It would've made NO difference to the story if she faced the poisoning one day, the drowning a week later, the father almost succeeding in strangling her another week, etc. Stretch it out over months. We would've felt we lived her story. Understood her. Experience it with her. Now we just felt: oh well... another almost-killed-or-injured-event. No biggie.
And lastly, when they found the teenager, one of the characters asked: "Oh, you found her?". That was the extend of their jubilation.
Seriously. No one truly cheered. The readers were not told much about her physical condition. Or how the characters reacted to her being found. Not even the parents' reaction! We wanted to cry with them, cheer with the aunt. See her thanking our brave Davina. We wanted the police to show emotion and support and eat their words. We wanted to see the old bat apologize for telling Davina "she'll NEVER find her". Nothing. Just an "oh, you found her" and everyone went home and partied the next day. Shaking my head.
Well, enough complaining. I couldn't really enjoy the 2nd book due to these issues just repeating in it. So even though the first book deserves 3-4 stars in my opinion, it sadly left me with too much frustrations to continue the series.
I liked these books to start. Sadly, despite the author not being a bad writer and only having a few grammar and editing errors, I won’t read more and likely won’t read any other of her other series. It’s truly annoying when a main character cannot grow and develop over the course of a series. I’m disappointed in the author.
Hell, I ended up reading eight of these books before I wrote this review but Davina has become too much. She’s self righteous and virtuous to the point of real annoyance. There’s accountability like cleaning up for yourself and then there’s Davina, particularly in the last few books.
But no, the main character, Davina, is too virtuous to accept any help, hell accept ANYTHING, let alone admit any issue and too ‚gosh darn independent‘ to accept any help. She’s the giver. It’s like a sick flaw to put EVERYONE ELSE in front of her own needs. It’s truly moved past being a character to admire and become a caricature of making it on her own, never bothering anyone else, never putting anyone out. It’s character flaws now, not a character to look up to or emulate.
It’s not necessary to clean up everything everywhere for everyone all the time. It’s not necessary to act superior to others because you had a harder childhood, etc. and thus you MUST give, give, give. With everything we’re supposed to remember about how hard it is to be psychic or to have a difficult bullied childhood, I’d like to point out that she has an ENORMOUS number of friends and supporters in her hometown. She’s had a lot of support, even from the first book, but she has this incredibly irritating need to be self effacing and make-it-on-her-own-like to the point where I have lost all respect for her. You can stand up for yourself without paying back other people’s kindnesses and courtesies with money and receipts. She can give to others but cannot accept anything.
SPECIFICALLY FOR EIGHTH BOOK - SPOILER
She can go to a freaking hospital if she was abducted, dislocated her thumb amongst other injuries, got frostbite from her escape and fell into a frozen lake. In fact, she would be made to go, even in fiction, no matter what she said because the hotel, the police and Kelsey’s company could be sued for her injuries. If she’s that concerned about money, perhaps she should consider that Kelsey‘s company would be likely be held responsible for her injuries, even if she is only a consultant, and thus Davina wouldn’t pay the cost.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An addictive blend of heart, suspense, and supernatural chills!
Kaylie Hunter has a gift, she doesn’t just write stories, she drops you inside them and refuses to let you go. One Gone – More Before Long hooked me from the first page with Davina Ravine, a small-town psychic who’s as vulnerable as she is strong. She’s quirky, flawed, and completely unforgettable, the kind of character who lingers long after you’ve closed the book.
This story isn’t just about solving a mystery; it’s about confronting grief, navigating complicated family ties, and uncovering long-buried truths, all while racing against the dark edge of danger. Kaylie balances razor-sharp suspense with emotional depth in a way that feels effortless. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, she twists the knife (pun intended 😅).
The pacing? Spot on. The atmosphere? Deliciously tense. The villains? Creepy enough to give you goosebumps. And the emotional pull? Let’s just say I wasn’t prepared for how much this story would make me feel.
If you love thrillers with a supernatural kick, think Colleen Helme or Fiona Quinn, but crave characters who feel real and plots that keep you turning pages at 2 a.m., Kaylie Hunter needs to be on your shelf.
I’m already diving into book two because there’s no way I’m letting Davina’s story end here. Kaylie Hunter isn’t just an author to watch, she’s one to binge. 📚🔥
This is the first in a series. All I can say is Wow! What a great book, it has it all.
Davina Ravine lives with her father, who is not well. When we are saying not well, he never leaves the house (or something is keeping him from that) and at anytime he can turn into a monster almost killing Davina. But, when Davina's mother died, she promised her that she would take care of her father. At that time, her father was a gentle and loving man.
There is also something different about Davina, she is psychic. Her grandmother, Bernadette, never had any use for her after her daughter died, she would not visit or even help take care of 12 year old Davina. Davina not only suffered the loss of her mother, but her older sister at age 14, went missing.
Now, 15 years later, another girl is missing and Davina is having visions of her running the woods away from someone chasing her. She knows she has to help find the girl, if she is still alive! Can Davina, with her friends helping her find the girl. Or, will Davina lose everything dear to her by trying to help!
This is really a heartwarming and great thriller. I loved all the characters and can't wait to delve into the next one!!
This was such an incredible read. The writing is fantastic, not too wordy but not too lack luster with details. I absolutely loved the characters and the depth of stories for each. These were well thought out and they had so much dimension. Even the side characters. It is so hard to find a psychic series that's actually a good story and written well. I'm a blanketed psychic/medium and a lot of it is based around witches or ghosts and such. While that's a big part of it for me (deceased), the premonitions and past things comes into play. Emotions. This author did such an incredible job explaining that Emotions can be felt as energy from another person.
I loved Davina. She was kind, loyal, and her character was easily human but tries so hard to be strong. Her best friend Olivia, loved her! Their dynamic together reminds me of my friends. I'm interested to see where the love interests may be headed.
What I'm hoping to find in future books is that she's able to discover more about herself and grow into the role and gift that she was born with. I'm hoping there's some resolution with her father and I'm hoping she grows closer to her grandmother.
Strong start... big disappointment I am so torn on my rating for this. The first half completely drew me in, had me cracking up laughing and staying up late reading. I was really excited about this book and ready to give it 5 stars! But the writing became a bit juvenile and the storyline became so unrealistic. It reminds me of the kind of story a 16 year old would write. There was no depth to the plot, only dialogue and repetitive events. It just became too much. The second half should have been so much shorter. The ending had no impact whatsoever. No big event or cliffhanger. It didn't make me want to read the second book for any reason other than wanting to know how it ends. I think there is so much potential, this book just needed a thorough edit. I will start the second one and hope for improvement!
One book in, and this has already become my favorite series ever! From the very first chapter, I was completely hooked. The characters felt so real—like people I know and love—and their personalities shined through in every interaction. The way they connected with each other was heartwarming, relatable, and so engaging.
This book is the perfect mix of humor, mystery, and suspense. It’s spooky and mysterious enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, but it also had me laughing out loud, something I rarely find in books. It felt like my best friend was sitting down and telling me an incredible story.
The pacing was fantastic; it’s a true page-turner that I couldn’t put down. I was enthralled from start to finish, and now I can’t wait to dive into the rest of the series. Here’s hoping the author keeps writing more books in this amazing series because I’m officially obsessed!
A missing teenager, a psychic, a doubting big city detective in a small town, quirky friends and troublesome family matters all made for a story that had me smiling, chuckling and flying through the book. Davina is a hoot and a half and I loved how vividly developed she was from the start. Her friendships with Olivia, Noah, Issac and Mrs. Paulson were precious, sincere and so important to this story. Detective Stone had me flip flopping with emotions and Bernadette had me cackling over their family dynamic. The cold case and current case are not solved, but the cliffhanger did address what had been recovered and what could still happen!
Good characters, good mystery and action, not too far out with the psychic
I never wanted to put this book down. Early action in the book slowly uncovered family mysteries and the source of family tragedies. A close network of friends developed to help the protagonist deal with old family secrets while searching for and finding the missing girl. It is the close network of friends developed that makes me want to read the next in the series as much as the potential story resolution. An enjoyable quick read.
Davina was working as a cleaning lady to take care of her brutal father. “Between my sister’s disappearance, my mom’s suicide, Francis’ violent outbursts…[the chief] was determined to someday run me out of town.”
The story had an easy narrative, but it takes a while to get going. It turns out Davina gets visions and often gets in trouble when she follows them. There’s a lot of time-consuming dialogue between the townsfolks, and it takes a long time to get to the point. The people tend to lose focus with their inane chatter. I guess this was an okay read, but it’s SO LONG.
This was a very different type of book than I usually read but I was hooked quickly. I have to say that this series gave me the creeps at times so I have read up to book 5 and stopped because I’d read usually at night to sleep and this kind of would keep me awake! This def is a different style of writing and you wonder WHO the evil one is the whole time. You def get some eye opening info and things happening during the book that makes your jaw drop. Love the weird twists and turns. Need to pick this book series back up because it’s up to Book 11!!
Book was entertaining and the characters were fun - sort of a group of misfits who blended well together. What I didn’t like was that the book left a central question to the next book in the series. While I don’t mind a larger story being told over the arc of a series I think the biggest question of the mystery — the killer — should be revealed in the current book I am reading. I felt like I didn’t receive the payoff for reading.
This book was so good! I am surprised that I enjoyed it so much, mainly because of the ‘powers’ that the main character has. I am a skeptic about true psychic power but this was so believable! As I approached the end of the book I realized although I have not left a book review in a long time that I had to share what a good story this was! I will definitely read the next two books in the series and look for others from the author Kaylie Hunter.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Wow I could not put this book down. This is the first book I’ve read of Ms Hunter but will not be the last. You never know what will happen next. Love all the characters in this book. And the special friendship between Olivia and Davina. And all the craziness they get into reminds me of my BFF of 58 yrs we were always up to something. Can’t wait to read the next book.
I found this book quite enjoyable, particularly the main plot. However, I was disappointed that only a sub-plot was resolved.
What troubled me the most was the portrayal of the main character’s father – it seemed unrealistic for such a situation to be deemed acceptable. Regardless of the size of the town, no promise should outweigh one’s life, and no mother would reasonably expect their child to live with someone attempting harm.
I enjoyed many things about this book: the mystery, the psychic and paranormal aspects, the various characters. The writing itself could probably benefit from a bit more polishing (a lot of people giggle or smirk or laugh silently and often at times it doesn’t make sense) but it was still an enjoyable read and written well enough to have me reading long past my bedtime!
Wasn’t sure what to make of this to begin with but the story got interesting pretty quickly and the short snappy chapters sucked me in! Davina gets visions and tries to help police locate a missing teenager. With the support of the police, her best friend and neighbours they all pull together to help to decipher what the visions mean. First of a series so dare say I’ll be off to download no.2 now!
I found this book to be very interesting. The characters were good. The by play between Davina and Stone Wanted me to push them together. His dismissal of her abilities to know when something would happen was interesting and knowing most of the town was behind her.
