I don’t think I am the target demographic for this book…I am not a man. I did think some parts of the book were pretty funny, but at times I couldn’t tell if the writer understood how dumb his advice was because his stories sometimes supported the ridiculous one line advice bits. I definitely think there are some shots at toxic masculinity, but I think there are also some lingering nostalgia for it. I will say it’s a quick read and it’s pretty well written. I haven’t watched the videos on the same topic and I think after reading this I’m all set.

The book was every thing I expected it to be: full of humorous one liners, toxic masculine anecdotes and life lessons you can only learn by being a complete prick.

I hung on every word of it.

Never take an advanced copy from Net Galley. Make your librarian get it for you. Be a man.

Stay toxic, kings.

I opted to read this because I follow the “Be a Man” guy on TikTok, and he’s hilarious. The book fell short, however. The entire book was another person’s musings on how to be a man. Every once in a while, you would get the original guy’s one-liners. Do yourself a favor and read this via the audiobook. The thick Massachusetts accent somehow makes it funnier. I recommend reading this book if you need a reason to be thankful for your own husband or boyfriend. Obviously, this book was written in jest. I will admit there were a few times where I did laugh out loud.

Good critique on modern masculinity despite being a bit of a slog at times

I give this a 3 as long as people read it as a (mostly?) parody and aren’t taking it seriously. I got a few laughs and checked it out because I saw the guy on social media and it was pretty short. Not much of a commitment, and sometimes you need some mindless humor.

My girlfriend gave me the book as a gift, as I love and often share his Instagram videos. The book is an exploration of “The Be A Man Guy’s” life and how he learned the wisdom he distributes. I’m probably about his age, as well as from the northeast (him Boston, me Philadelphia area) and as such related to a lot of his experiences.

The book isn’t going to win a Pulitzer Prizes. It’s unapologetically manly, though I imagine he had an editor that made sure he wasn’t too offensive in this culture that has swayed toward sensitivity. The book is meant to be funny, and there were certainly times I laughed out loud. It only took this long to read it as I left it alone for months at a time, really just using it for some comic relief.

If you have a manly man in your life or consider yourself one, you might get a kick out of the book.

While I can see how this schtik would work for a TikTok account I don't think it translates to book form. While listening to the audiobook I just kept wondering what the point of it all was. Are the stories true? Or are they fictional account from the "characters" life? And while some of them pair well with the "be a man" one liners, others didn't align.

Only sort of a book. More like clippings of his various thoughts put into a scrapbook. He says a lot of things out loud that most men whisper or don't even think to say at all because it is so ingrained in our behaviors and experiences. Overall an enjoyable book.

No surprises - largely a rehash of the viral videos and a cash grab…but no shame in cashing in on a good shtick.

It was an ok supplemental to his viral video empire. Some funny parts but some of the sections are not really all that amusing or funny. This could have been much better and much more developed.

For those that don’t understand that this is a satire, let me spell it out for you: it’s a satire. Everything about it is just hilarious. The form of telling short stories between outrageous advice of how to “be a man” is just phenomenal. Highly recommend to anyone who is willing to laugh.
