Another low laugh. The ice in his drink clinks against the glass. It makes her stomach tense.
“Probably for the best. I didn’t think you wanted to go home with someone living in a flex space in Murray Hill, anyway. Let me buy you a drink.”
“One drink,” Alina says, willing stern warning into her voice. Unsure if it’s directed at herself or him. “Are you going to try and explain shorting to me?”
He grins, incisors gleaming in the dim light.
“Only if you ask nicely.”

Alina gets more than she bargained for with Wall Street tsar Aleksander Morozova.
I’ve never felt so seen by a piece of fiction in my life. Persephoneselene I think I owe you more than I could ever explain. This is going to be one of those books (yes, book, because to call it anything less would be an insult of the greatest degree) that I’m about to keep reading and rereading my entire life. Thank you so much, once more, for writing this persephone
Unnecessary drama caused by the heroine's infidelity
The writing was very bloated, but the story initially flowed well with the development of the couple—something the author decided to abandon in favor of long, cheap drama. The last 200 pages are wasted on this forced anguish, and the heroine becomes a very irritating character.
*A note for those considering reading the book (something the author doesn't even warn about) The heroine cheats out of insecurity and for a very poorly thought-out reason, ultimately abandoning the hero. She also considers getting involved with a woman to forget him.
A poignant and smutty Darklina fic that left me conflicted.
The idea to translate the Shadow and Bone characters into Wall Street bankers and leftist college students worked surprisingly well, thanks to the author's careful research into economics and politics. But even if it was heartfelt and well-written, I was uncomfortable with the smut, and Alina's character appeared to be so hopelessly broken the reading became frustrating.
I'd still recommend it if you're interested in an exploration of trauma and healing through sex: if you can stomach the excruciatingly long characters' journey, the ending will be a balm.
I’ve read it 33 times in the span of 1 month and I cried each time, no other book has made me go back to a story so many times, I’m sad it’s no longer on ao3 and I really regret not downloading it p.s if anyone has it can I please please have it I beg of you
our life is determined by what we think we deserve and our choices , experiences and the level of intimacy we allow in our life are dictated by this. creating a a cycle of self destructive behaviours to avoid feeling the pain of being icarus flying to close to the sun a metaphor for wanting more than what we’re made for.
