A Berry Flavored Obituary

Rate this book
There’s a corpse in Elly Pickle’s bakery. Right between the ice cream cake and the frozen strawberries.

Naturally, Elly is horrified. Not only is the victim frozen solid, but she’s a local pillar of the community in the small town of Huli Bay, Hawaii.

The cherries on top of this terribly flavored cupcake?

Elly’s just lost her beloved husband, an unreasonably tall detective won’t stop asking her questions, and if she thought business was bad before the whole “dead lady in the cooler” incident, she’s in for a surprise.

Turns out, the victim was her husband’s mistress. And Elly’s the only one with the keys to the bakery.

With the detective set on bringing her down, Elly has got to figure out who committed the murder before she loses her peaceful life in this perfect seaside town.

See if you can figure out whodunit before Elly does. Grab your copy of this cozy mystery in a brand new series from USA Today bestselling author, Rosie A. Point!

Who Killed Sandra Billings ? . . .

Elly Pickle is still grieving the death of her husband, Marcus. She has a few customers at the bakery and a stranger came in for coffee. Business has been very slow and she may have to close down if it keeps going this way. Then, unfortunately, her hostile mother entered and began to criticize her. Their relationship was always cold like this. The woman had no sense that she was disturbing the customers with her hostility. And Elly was far too nice to tell her to leave. (Nice can easily become “doormat” which seemed a more accurate description of meek Elly.) Her mother informed her that the town’s detective just retired and a mean and rude guy replaced him. She also said he was bad at his job. Before she could continue, Elly defended the man since they had not even met him yet. At that point, the stranger stood up and handed Elly the money for his coffee as she asked his name. Detective Kai Iona introduced himself, stared at Elly’s rude mother, and walked out the door.

When Elly arrives at work the next day, she notices the door to the walk-in freezer is partially open! If the ice cream has melted, it will make a terrible mess. She had made a fresh ice cream cake just yesterday and rushes over to check the damage. Ice cream had melted and puddled on the floor – right next to a dead body! The dead woman, Sandra Billings, was a well-known member of the town. And the bad news was just beginning.

At the police station, Detective Iona read through his notes as Elly sat on the edge of the seat. Assuming she knew, he told her it was common knowledge that her husband had been having an affair with the victim right up until he died! She had never suspected. And with Elly having the only set of keys to the bakery where the body was found, it wasn’t looking good for her. With everyone believing she is most likely the killer, she is on her own to prove that she is innocent. Can she find the murderer? Will the shocking surprise of someone exiting her cottage at night provide further information? Or is the killer someone she has still not identified and remains on the loose?

This one has so much going on that the reader will need to take notes! The story line is intriguing, entertaining, and filled with action, adventure, and mystery to keep the reader excited and involved. Grab your copy and get to know the characters as we start this new series!

Ellie Pickle a newly young widow is trying to make a go of her bakery despite the constant put downs by her odious, hateful mother who never has anything but criticism for Ellie. Ellie Pickle has a soft heart and is an easy push over and just takes things in stride when she should actually react. When the most popular real estate agent in town is found dead in Ellie's walk in freezer and she becomes a suspect, things seem to go from bad to worse. With a pep talk trying to boost her us by her Best Friend, Leilani, Ellie knows she has to investigate on her own to clear her name as a suspect and find the real killer. And there's a new detective in town who is investigating, but she feels the need to look into the murder herself. And she now has a pet cat who snuck into her cottage through a window she named Meow. This is a page turning adventure that has so many twists and turns and red-herring not to mention the surprise ending. I love this series so far and Ellie's growth as the chapters go on. There was more than one spot where I wanted to stand up and cheer! I can't wait to see what will happen next. A must read new series. I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Elly Pickle is having a hard go of things recently. Her husband just passed and her bakery business has been slow add in an overbearing critical mother and things are kind of bleak. With a pep tall from her bff and an idea about how to draw in new business Elly has a good feeling until she walks into the bakery and finds a body in her freezer. Startling secrets make her seem like the only suspect. She decides she’s not going to just let things be she’s going to investigate and clear herself.
I enjoyed this series started very much. There’s a ton of action packed into this short novel with lots of quirky locals and a hunky new in town detective. The character growth of Elly is wonderfully done. Very enjoyable end of summer read, I’m excited to see what new adventures Elly will have.

A Berry Flavored Obituary is the first book in A Beach Bakery Cozy Mystery series. This was a quick and fun read set in Hawaii. Elly Pickle is just trying to hold it all together while keeping her bakery running and getting her life back in order after the recent passing of her husband. But when she stumbled upon a dead body in her bakery freezer she's not only shocked but terrified about being arrested for a murder she didn't commit!

I found the story to be very well written and it has a surprising twist in the plot that you just won't see coming! It also has many wonderful characters and is set in Hawaii which is the perfect place for this quick beach read. I'm really looking forward to the release of the second book..

A fun and insightful new bakery cozy mystery series.

Elly is working hard at her bakery after the recent death of her husband in a car accident.

Things become more challenging and complicated when she finds a body in her walk in cooler, and learns more about secrets her mother and others around her have been keeping.

Elly will have to find her roar to stand up to her difficult mother, and to face her new reality and business challenges alongside her friend Leilani .

Family and daily life will be a bit different now for Elly.

With a new detective in town helping to clean up crime, and a true friend or two by her side, things might be a bit brighter for Elly- especially if she upgrades as hoped to Kona coffee and has luck with Leilani with business development plans.

When is being nice too nice? When is it okay to be strong and vocally abrupt? This is a great new series that begs the answers to those questions. When Elly Pickle hears some customers talking about someone who is too nice, she dismisses the idea that it could be her. She is just a grieving widow whose entire life was turned upside down in the space of a minute.

Rosie Pointe did a wonderful job with this story. It has the mystery we all love but it also has an array of emotions that seeps through the entire story. It makes you want to get to know these characters better and become friends with them.

I was given a review copy of this book by the author but the opinion expressed here is my own.

Always a big fan of Point's bite sized cozies and was excited to see one set in my favorite place on Earth, Hawai`i. I would however like to see more research done for correct usage of pidgin phrases. Leilani kept calling Elly "Brah" which is supposed to be used to address males not females as it is a shorten version of Bruddah or bro or dude.

Other than that, a great cast of characters and I like to see the emergence of Elly from Mrs. Pickles, someone who is too nice almost to the point of being a pushover to Miss Dumas who is starting to stand up for herself. Letting go of toxic relationships so she can hopefully find one who is deserving of her like the cute new Detective Iona.

This was a fun new start for a series and what a great setting! Elly and Mikala made for a couple of good sleuthing besties. It sounded like Mikala’s cousin could be a real hoot so maybe she’ll be in another book a little bit more.

There was a surprise twist and I wasn’t completely sure whodunit, but that showdown was a good one with luck being on Elly’s side for sure. I’m hoping there’s a nice future in store for Elly and the good detective who despite suspecting her at one point turned out to be a pretty nice guy. I’m eager to see what kinds of things these characters get into next!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by BookSprout, and my opinions are my own.

Elly life took a turn in away she wasn't expected. The death of her husband, her business (bakery) in trouble and now a dead body in her cooler.
The new detective in town is on the job. Elly thinks he thinks she is guilty and he was thinking the opposite. A crazy mother screaming and blaming her for everything wrong in the world. Also she got busted for putting the new detective down.
Are the answers at the Book club meetings. Is it all about the missing red tote bag, or the black book.
The last thing you expected was the surprise around the corner.

I normally don't like books based on a widow or widower, but the author was upfront about that going in, which I appreciated it. I decided to give the book a try anyway, and I'm very happy that I did. This was a really fun book, and I enjoyed the mystery. Elly was an awesome character, and I liked her right away. There was also a very awesome, surprise twist that I didn't see coming, and was what made me decide to give the book 5 stars, because I really loved it. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Okay book!!

It was okay, some characters were likeable.
Elly, finally got a backbone at the end of the book, Leilani was the smartest one, and Elly's mother was pure hateful to her. The detective Iona was interesting to say the least.
Elly is struggling to keep the bakery, keeps a late lazy waiter employed, has a husband dead of a car crash recently, then finds out he was cheating on her with the popular real estate realtor. I figured out who did it in the middle of the book!!!!!
Elly comes in to the bakery one morning and finds the realtor in her bakery!!
You can get this book to get the.details!!

Saber Tooth Wisdom

Foremost, the unmitigated audacity of a few ignorant people even in a tropical paradise 😠🤷🏾‍♀️‼️Nevertheless, hello 👋🏾 to the new & improved Eleanor formerly known as “Elly” 🤭‼️…and not a moment too soon. Finally, a free side order of some saber tooth wisdom on the bakery’s menu 🤭‼️ “A Berry Flavored Obituary (A Beach Bakery Cozy Mystery)” (4.25 ⭐️’s) - Book 1 of 3 was an intriguing & entertaining read, essentially a long overdue spring cleanse. Out with the old & in with the new‼️Hmmm, what a great segway into book two🍿…Looking forward to bakery 🧁, books 📚& boos 😍clues🤭‼️

Rosie A. Point does not disappoint, another great start to what I believe will be an amazing new series. Ellie is a new widow fighting for her bakery to stay afloat when a prominent real estate agent is murdered in said bakery right new to the ice cream cakes. This book was a page turner from beginning to the end, so good I read it in one day I just could not lay it down to go to sleep. There is a lot of twists and turns but another brilliant story from Rosie A. Point.

That is NOT an ice-cream cake!

Elly Pickle is still mourning the death of her beloved husband and struggling to keep her bakery in business. The last thing she needs is a corpse in her cooler and a detective who considers her a suspect. Why would she kill anyone? She didn’t even know her husband had a mistress!

This is a fun start to a new cozy series. The characters are well-developed and I like the hint of a future possible romance. I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary.

Fun short cozy mystery set in Hawaii

Rosie Point has another series in her cozy mystery collection. Set in Hawaii, it brings a lovely setting to a cozy where the main character owns a bakery and finds a body in her freezer. Some real twists in this story which adds to the murder mystery. There does need to be a review of some Hawaiian terms: e.g. “bruh” is an affectionate term for brother or dude not usually used between women. And once or twice a character’s name changed from Patricia to Pamela. But these are small inconsistencies in an overall good story.

A Great Fun Start for the New Series!!!

A Berry Flavored Obituary is first book in A Beach Bakery Cozy Mystery Series. This book is a fast, fun read, a great page turning cozy mystery, good story line set in beautiful island of Hawaii. I highly recommend this book to any cozy mystery fans.

This was a cute little quick read. It wasn’t amazing but it wasn’t terrible. There was one page where an incorrect name was used (e.g., Patricia did this, then Patricia did that, and then Pamela did this next). I was thrown off for a minute (who the heck is Pamela?!) but it appears it was just a typo. I liked how short the book was and it kept me engaged. I found it amusing. Nice for an in-between-larger-books read. I’ll be reading the next in the series!

Easy going baker Ellie Pickle has just buried her husband and is trying to keep her bakery afloat. Her nasty mother is no help. When Sandra is found dead in the cooler, things go rapidly downhill...and when she finds her 'dead' husband on the porch....
I received an ARC gratis and offer my opinion in the same vein.

Enjoyed the first in series. A very cozy who done it with lovable characters and a wonderful background. I don't know if I would go back to a bakery if there was a murder victim found in the fridge but a fun and quick read. It has teeth.

There’s a corpse in Elly Pickle’s bakery. Right between the ice cream cake and the frozen strawberries. Well isn't that where a dead body goes?

Suspense, mystery and intrigue fill the story line, twists and turns keep you guessing while you try to solve the mystery before you reach the end.

This was so fun! The characters are wonderful and I enjoyed the evolution of our main character. This read at a nice smooth pace keeping me turning the page and waiting to see what happened next. My jaw dropped a couple times! Which I just love when that happens. It means the author did a great job writing their story. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next!

Ok

I really hate how all these series have to start with the main character being the suspect, no matter how unlikely it is. I am a bit interested though, might read another one in the series eventually, now that that trope is out of the way.

I enjoyed this new book, Elly was very upset because of her husbands death and she was very emotional. Her bakery wasn't doing so well and as you would guess things just got worse for her. Check out this book and see what Elly had to endure. Happy reading.
