Contractor Wes Mathews is nearly finished hiking the Appalachian Trail in honor of his recently deceased best friend when he falls terribly ill. He stumbles into the nearest town and soon finds himself indebted to the beautiful young doctor who owns the clinic. In lieu of payment, he proposes a trade that will keep him in town—and away from obligations to his best friend’s sister—for several weeks.
But as Avery and Wes spend time together, their friendship begins moving into unexpected territory. Soon they both begin to question their plans for the future. But will Wes be able to let go of the debt he owes his best friend? And will Avery find the courage to risk everything for love?
Denise Hunter is the award-winning author of more than 40 novels, three of which have been adapted into Hallmark movies.
Denise writes heartwarming, small-town romances, peopled with layered characters who have real-life issues. Her readers enjoy the vicarious thrill of falling in love and the promise of a happily-ever-after sigh as they savor the final pages of her books.
In 1996, Denise began her first novel, writing while her children napped. Two years later it was published, and she's been writing ever since. Her books contain a strong romantic element, and her husband says he provides all her romantic material, but Denise insists a good imagination helps too!
Denise and her husband live in Indiana, where they raised three sons, and are currently enjoying an empty nest.
A second trip to picturesque Riverbend, North Carolina, brings another peek into the lives of the Robinson family. Riverbend is a mountain town with the Appalachian Trail running right through it. Dr. Avery Robinson has been on a fast track to getting her medical clinic established for her small hometown and that is her life. She watched her mom die of a terrible disease that she has a fifty percent chance of having and she doesn't want to know if she has the gene, so no family plans. Wes Garrett is on a memorial trip on the Trail to finish what his best friend could not finish. Landon died in Columbia saving Wes' life in an explosion and Wes promised to take care of Landon's sister. When Wes got very sick on the Trail, he stumbled to Avery's clinic for help. Without money to pay his bill, he stayed to work on an apartment behind her clinic to reimburse her. But during the few weeks he was in Riverbend, neither Wes nor Avery planned on their attraction to each other. At any rate, they cannot go there. Not in their plans. And yet? This is a great series with a likable blended family of two adult sons, Cooper (book 1), Gavin, and Avery, set with the lovely mountains in the backyard and the French Broad River running through the small tourist town. Romance with a swoon-worthy hero and a strong heroine and a touch of faith. Highly recommended. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson and NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Characters: Wes and Avery were both well-developed, sympathetic characters. Wes's struggle to understand his friend's sacrifice and Wes's duty to this friend both added to the plot. I felt bad for Avery since her potential disease ruled every part of her life.
Language: Clean.
Moral/theme: This novel contained themes of family, love (pretty obvious because it's a romance), sacrifice, and overcoming your fears.
Plot: Wes and Avery's developing relationship and the subsequent problems they encountered moved the plot right along.
Romance: Clean. Just kissing. I did feel like a lot of the romance was based on physical attraction, and I wasn't a fan of how the characters spent the night in the same bed (nothing happened, and this part was really skimmed over).
Writing: Denise Hunter's smooth, engaging writing style worked great for this book.
Overall: Mulberry Hollow was a quick, entertaining read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and contemporary romance.
For some reason, I was expecting this to be a Christian romance novel. I know I've read several of Denise Hunter's novels before, and always looked forward to a new one, especially a trip back to Riverbend Gap. But although the romance was great, and the story was well told, I felt just a little disappointed that there was really no "Christian" to this novel. I believe there was one mention of going to church, and a couple references to "whispering a prayer" and "God will help me." But because of the situations facing the two main characters, I was sorry that neither of them turned to God, or prayer, or faith, or the scriptures when struggling with huge life problems. And there was almost constant physical attraction between them spelled out, even having them spending the night together in the same bed. No matter how you slice it, that is not something that Christian characters should be doing, even in a novel. I think, had I not had the expectation of Christian values for this novel, I would have enjoyed it more.
Cooper sister Avery is a doctor in their small town. When Wes is sick from hiking he winds up in Avery clinic. Wes doesn't want debt so he agrees to fix up an apartment that Avery has. The more they spend together the more they have feeling for each other. Avery doesn't want to get married and Wes has feelings for someone else. But the chemistry is there. Can they find a way to be with each other or will Wes leave? I really love this series. A fun Romance with a great storyline. I can't wait to read book 3! Now I have to wait to it comes out!!!
Mulberry Hollow is a wonderful romance between two very likable characters. It is the second book in the Riverbend series, yet can easily be enjoyed even if you have not read book one, Riverbend Gap. I recently read book one in the series, so it was fun to return to this community and to the family of characters that I got to know in that story.
I loved the way the connection grew between Avery and Wes. They were two people who both had some heavy baggage hanging over them, were not looking to fall in love with each other, and thought that Wes would only be around for the short term. I liked that Wes was determined to do the best job he could on renovating the carriage house for Avery not only to repay his debt and but to also help her out.
Their journey from friends to more was sweet and packed with a very realistic chemistry, yet it seemed as if there was not much hope for a future for these two, which created just the right amount of angst and heartache for them to overcome. I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Oh, I just love this series! I downloaded this book before I had finished book #1, and I can't wait for book #3. I love the Robinson family, and this story was just so sweet and romantic. I was pulled in on chapter 1 and I couldn't stop listening until I finished it. I listened to it in 24 hours, and I was annoyed when I had to pause it when real life got in the way. I highly recommend this fantastic series!!
Denise Hunter is one of my favorite contemporary romance authors. Mulberry Hollow did not disappoint as I spent the pages with Ava and Wes. Theirs is far from a straight shot to a happily ever after, but it’s an enjoyable journey. A perfect next book from one of my favorites.
MULBERRY HOLLOW is the second book in the Riverbend series by Denise Hunter. Its Avery’s story and it is sure to pull on the reader’s heart strings. It will surely give you all the feels, let me tell you. My emotions were all over the place and I was giggling one minute and tearing up, the next. I really liked the setting of the small town of Riverbend and the connection to the Appalachian Trail and its history. I really got to know the people of this beautiful, small North Carolina town and I also know I will fall more in love with all of these characters as each book releases.
MULBERRY HOLLOW is a wonderful story of a blended family that will worm their way into your heart. Avery is the small town’s doctor. One night when she arrives at her home, which is above her doctor’s office, she almost stumbles over Wes. He has been hiking the trail and is very sick. He needs help, has no where to go, and is a complete stranger. So of course, Avery allows him to stay with her. Hang on to your seats! The twists and turns will keep you flipping the pages long into the night. Avery has a big secret that she doesn’t share with just anyone!
MULBERRY HOLLOW is a quick read that you can easily read in one sitting and love every minute of it. It is one heck of a crazy emotional roller coaster ride. I have never met a Denise Hunter book that I didn’t love and once I started reading I knew I was going on one heck of an emotional journey! Whatever you are reading, put it down, and run and get this book! If you’ve never read a Denise Hunter novel (and you know who you are) this would be a perfect one to hook you!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.
I love the setting and the Robinson family and all the people in the small town. Avery is a kind person and compassionate doctor, and when she finds a sick hiker at her clinic's door, she takes him in and lets him stay until he's recovered.
Wes is fulfilling his best friend's wish to hike the Appalachians when he finds himself sick and in the care of Dr. Avery Robinson. Slowly, they form a friendship and when Wes gets better, they strike a deal for him to work on the carriage house to pay off the bill for his care.
As usual, the writing is excellent and the characters are well done and appealing. Avery is scared of what her future might hold if she tests positive for the same disease her mother died of, and Wes is holding himself to a higher standard and assuming too much responsibility for what he things he should do.
Looking forward to the next one in the series!
I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
Happy, achy sigh. Denise Hunter has such a wonderful/terrible way of messing with my heart when she writes a romance. I always come away feeling slightly discombobulated and giddy with relief because sometimes her happily ever afters don't seem achievable. :-)
While this is the second book in the Riverbend series it can easily be read as a standalone. I know because I chickened out of reading book one (love triangle involving brothers) but I was able to jump in here without any problem (and so much less angst! lol)
Love the way the romance develops. It feels like we have all the time in the world even though both Avery and Wes are on a tight timeline. From that harrowing first meet to the gradual shift from doctor/patient to friends to...what never can be....I was completely invested and on tenterhooks. And for those of you who know I am love triangle phobic, this one isn't quite that so it's all good. It comes close, but not really -- and that's all I can say without spoilers so you'll just have to read Mulberry Hollow to figure out what I mean.
Both Avery and Wes have personal demons to wrestle with before they can be open to a lasting relationship -- and those demons are monsters! Hunter really captures the emotional turmoil that provides the stumbling blocks to these two following through on their feelings. My heart is still bruised from all the pummelling.
A faith-filled inspirational romance with lots of heart.
Avery Robinson has carried the grief of watching her mother die from Huntington's disease since she was a child. Because of that feeling of hopelessness she became a doctor serving her small community in North Carolina. Fearing her own chances of carrying the gene for Huntington's she has closed off her heart to love. Wes Garrett is hiking the Appalachian Trail in honor of his friend who gave his life for him. When an illness strikes him on the trail he ends up on the doorstep of Avery's clinic. In exchange for care, Wes stays to help Avery renovate her carriage house. As they spend time together it's clear they are attracted to one another. Can Wes reconcile the debt he feels he owes his friend and can Avery open up her heart to allow their love to grow? A sweet Christian Roman sure to touch your heart.
Denise Hunter has cemented her place in my shortlist of "authors whose books I must immediately purchase and read" (and/or request from NetGalley, LOL). :)
This second installment in the Riverbend series is easily on par with book 1, Riverbend Gap. I do recommend reading them in order, as spoiler alerts would abound otherwise--not to mention context and depth!
Revisiting the town and familiar characters was a joy, and I'm so excited we get to see Gavin's story in the upcoming third book in the series.
_Mulberry Hollow_ explores both the medical and construction worlds, both of which I have a keen interest in between work (medical industry) and thinking ahead to homeownership. I was particularly intrigued by the ongoing plot point of whether or not to pursue genetic testing, and how (not) doing so could impact one's life--sometimes significantly. Hunter did a great job at inviting the reader to place themselves in the story and ask what they would do in similar circumstances!
Very well done. Now my only problem ...I have to wait for book 3 to come out! :)
4/5 stars.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
2.5 Stars. Denise Hunter is often hit or miss for me and this was definitely more of a miss. It was pretty slow and I never really go invested in the characters or the romance. There were also a few things that annoyed me.
***Spoilers***
So Avery's whole deal is that she might have the Parkinson's gene, but she doesn't want to take the test to find out because if she has it, she'll just live in fear about it developing. But she spends her life like she has the gene, so it never really made sense. And it took her until about the 90% mark of the book to make that realization. And, of course, when she takes the test she finds out she doesn't have it, so now it's ok if she gets married and have kids.
I also thought Wes' whole deal with Lillian was a little ridiculous. And also when he decided he had to try a romantic relationship with her, he was disappointed she wanted to do things like cook and stay in and watch Netflix rather than going out dancing. I don't know, it just struck me as really shallow things.
I thoroughly enjoyed my return to Riverbend Gap and the beautiful, heavily wooded Mulberry Hollow—set against the backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains! Besides its charm, I especially love the small town vibes of Riverbend and camaraderie of the residents, always quick to lend a helping hand.
Wes Garrett is a man of honor and quite a hunky one at that! If there is such a thing as a perfect man he definitely fills the bill, although Dr. Avery Robinson tries in vain not to notice that fact. Avery is married to her job and plans on staying single, hiding her terrible secret as to why. I found her strength admirable, but her down-to-earth, vulnerable nature refreshing.
Denise Hunter's books aren't simply a bunch of romantic fluff as she touches on some very real issues—terminal illness, divorce, unwed pregnancy—but ooh, yeah, the romance! So angsty and heartbreakingly delicious. lol Hunter is my "go to" author when I need to get away from it all and 'Mulberry Hollow' definitely accomplished that for me. An excellent read!
"I would’ve trusted Him that much more if I’d been able to see how He would turn my pain into joy.” (Such wisdom! taken from Mulberry Hollow)
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley on behalf of the publisher and was under no obligation to post a favorable review.*
I have long enjoyed the books by Denise Hunter and never miss one. This second book in her new series is the best! Filled with wonderful characters and a good plot, it is sure to please her many fans. This one centers on Avery’s story and it’s one that will tug at your heartstrings for sure. I enjoyed it so much.
My thanks to Thomas Nelson Publishers for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinion in this review is expressly my own.
Mulberry Hollow is the second book in Denise Hunter’s Riverbend Romance. As is the way with most of her series, you can read the books as stand alone titles, but reading the series in order gives you a lovely overview of this family group. We met Avery in the first book in the series and now get a better insight into her life, career and decisions in this second book.
Avery is a doctor and owner of the only clinic in town. It’s a career she followed after watching her mother die. Now the genetic disease that stole her mother’s life hangs over Avery’s. It’s one of the reasons she is so desperate to entice another doctor to the clinic. When a hiker finds his way to Avery’s clinic doorstep and needs medical care, it might also be an answer to prayer. With limited funds, Wes offers to renovate the small carriage house on Avery’s property in exchange for his medical care. It’s easy for Avery to enjoy Wes’s company, despite her vow to avoid a relationship, marriage and a family. But Wes is committed elsewhere, anyway, so it can’t hurt to spend time with him, right?
Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed Denise Hunter’s writing and the way she brings her characters to life. This one seemed to go by so quickly (maybe I need to read them more slowly and actually savour them instead of devouring it in one sitting). Avery is caught between fear of what her future might hold and the fear of not knowing. She has decided to forgo marriage and a family to prevent the hurt she experienced as a child. But her family’s nagging about dating is getting on her nerves. When Wes enters her life, it seems perfect. She enjoys spending time with him but knows there can be nothing between them in the future. That, of course, doesn’t protect her heart when it comes to saying goodbye.
Wes is a great love interest character, if a little blinded at times. He is so good for Avery, though and they are good together. It just takes them a while to figure that out.
This one only mentions God once or twice and church the same, so calling it Christian romance might be a stretch. My other complaint is the lack of diversity. Only two character that are not white and they end up together? Seriously? I think Christian fiction authors and publishers need to do better in this regard, but it’s certainly not a problem limited to this book.
Looking for a relaxing and romantic read? You really can’t go wrong with Denise Hunter and she remains one of my favourite authors for a book I know I’ll thoroughly enjoy.
The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.

I loved returning to Riverbend. Hunter is one of my favorite romance authors and she did not disappoint with this second book in her Riverbend Romance series. I loved me time with Avery and Wes. I cannot wait for book three to hit my doorstep. 4.5 stars I highly recommend this series. The Mary Reader received this book from the publisher for review. A favorable review was not required, and all views expressed are our own.
I've been looking forward to this book ever since I finished the first book! I love the small town setting nestled along the Appalachian Trail. Avery's clinic and home is in the most picturesque place with a river running behind it. It just sounds so lovely.
Avery and Wes have a relationship that grows so naturally and fluidly. They were so comfortable with each other and I really felt that come through as a reader. Both Avery and Wes are battling some big challenges that require courage and heart. All I can say is thank goodness for good people in their lives, helping them to get to the right decisions to find happiness and peace. It was so easy to like both Avery and Wes. They are the kind of people I would like to be friends with.
This is a sweet, gentle story with strong, well defined characters.
And now I will not so patiently wait for book three because Avery's brother deserves such a happily ever after. I'm desperate for him to get it.
Content: kissing. Mild Christian elements.

Denise Hunter is an author I can always count on to deliver and clean, unforgettable romance that keeps me completely engaged from start to finish. Her latest, Mulberry Hollow, is no exception. The second in her Riverbend Romance series, Hunter has crafted a story that features Avery and Wes, two people struggling with personal demons all while seeking to make a difference in the world around them. The story moves swiftly, and the characters easily work their way into your heart. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next installment!
I received this book from Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this installment in the Riverbend series. Avery is a likable character and has great chemistry with Wes. I like how their relationship grew from a friendship, a natural progression. An enjoyable read with a lot of depth.
Mulberry Hollow is the second book in the Riverbend Romance Series and this book featured Avery. She is a doctor in Mulberry Hollow and finds a very sick man on the doorstep of her clinic. There is definite chemistry and attraction between the two. But there are circumstances and misunderstandings that made for a great story. All the characters are so likeable, they feel like family to me. Ms. Hunter knows how to write romance. She is one of my favorites in her genre. *I was given a copy of thus book by Thomas Nelson Publishers and this is my honest opinion 4.5 stars
Mulberry Hollow by Denise Hunter is one of her best stories.
Avery is a doctor with her own clinic before the age of 30. She is driven to accomplish her goals in case she has the progressive disease her mom died of. I really enjoyed her character and the slow building relationship she has with Wes.
Wes is completing a portion of the Appalachian Trail to honor a friend of his that passed away. When Wes ends up on her porch with a fever looking like a mountain man Avery immediately steps into doctor mode. As their time together lengthens, she sees him more as a man than a patient; especially after he shaves :).
This is a beautiful story with some heartbreaking decisions both Avery and Wes have to make.
Another great book by Ms. Hunter!! Avery Robinson lives in the little town of Riverbend, at a through crossing of the Applachain Trail. A bit of an over achiever, she has finished med school, internship and residency, and opened her own small clinic in town, before her 30th birthday. When Wes Garrett, who is hiking the trail in honor of his late friend, ends up shivering and ill on her doorstep, she doesn't hesitate to take him in and let him stay while he heals (he refuses to go to the hospital, no money) and then allows him to stay and work off his debt. Wes agrees, even though he needs to get to Albany, NY, where his friends' sister lives. He told his buddy he would take care of her, and in Wes's mind, that means marrying her. Of course, since this is a romance, Wes and Avery are attracted to each other, but they both have reasons to avoid an encounter and to remain JUST FRIENDS. Watching love sneak up on them , and seeing how they deal with it, made for a very enjoyable story!! Can't wait for the next one in the series!
Mulberry Hollow is a charming, compulsively readable romance novel. Denise Hunter never disappoints with her amazing ability to create delightful characters and make them fall head-over-heels for one another. This is the second book in the Riverbend series. Avery and Wes take center stage, although secondary characters from the first book in the family make regular appearances. Mulberry Hollow can be read as a stand alone, but I recommend reading book one first. I feel the hero and heroine's struggles were well-written, particularly the tension between staying versus leaving. Hunter handles the moral and ethical implications of genetic testing and counseling for a grim diagnosis with tremendous ease. Wes is easy to love and one can't help but root for Avery too. I loved the sense of community and importance of a supportive family woven throughout the storyline. This is a fantastic wholesome romance novel and I'd give it ten stars if I could. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the complimentary copy. All opinions shared here are my own.
I just love these books! They’re so wholesome and sweet! I love that it’s Christian fiction, but the characters are realistic and not constantly hyper-spiritual!
Some of Avery’s story resonated with me a lot. I was crying with her 🥺
Overall, I didn’t think this one was mind-blowing, but I enjoyed it and can’t wait to continue the series!
Denise Hunter is one of my favorite authors. She just writes such sweet stories that make you want to care about the characters and hope they fall in love! I loved this sweet story about a small town Dr and a contractor.
I really liked this book. You could feel the love and support for the main character who is going through cancer treatment. I had an experience like this with my family, and I wish my experience had been more like this one, more of a web of support.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
I went into this book without reading the book blurb, but knowing that it was a continuation of the little town of Riverbend and characters that I enjoyed from Riverbend Gap. Listening to the audiobook version was like listening to a sweet friend share their love story. It flowed so easily, and the narrator's gentle voice conveyed the highs, lows, and romantic angst that was sprinkled all through this story.
Wes and Avery's first meeting happened by accident - quite literally! Avery found him at the door of her clinic with a high fever and virus and with the knowledge that she was his only hope of getting better. After a few days of TLC from Avery, Wes feels obligated to repay Avery for her skills and agreed to perform some home repairs on the carriage house next door. These repairs were only supposed to last for 2 weeks, but unexpected delays kept creeping up at every turn and Wes was anxious to get back on the Appalachian Trail hike to make his way to Lillian.
This love triangle was a bit different than what I've read since Lillian lived several states away. Oh, and Wes has actually NEVER met her in person! When Wes started feeling torn between both ladies, all I could think was, "Oh no...this will not end well for someone!"
I appreciated that Avery's character was more than just a doctor. At 30 years old, she had already experienced the passing of her mother from an incurable disease, and there was a 50/50 chance that she carried the same gene which would result in her receiving the same diagnosis. That uncertainty had me glued to the story until the very last chapter when she shared the results.
The only reason why I can't give 5 stars is the noticeable lack of Christian content. There were a couple of scenes of attending church (which felt bland), plus a couple of moments of internal reflection about God's plans. There were opportunities for so much more, and I have higher expectations from a Christian publisher (sorry/not sorry). I will continue the series as I'm curious about some of the side characters and how their stories will play out, and Denise Hunter definitely knows how to write romance. :)
Mulberry Hollow starts the year off as my first five star swoony romance of 2022!
Denise Hunter is fabulous at creating charming and believable characters like Avery Robinson and Wes Garrett. Neither one is looking for love or any type of relationship for that matter, but love has a way of breaking through anyway. "Love can creep up on you, you know. It can take you by surprise, change all your plans-despite your best intentions."
I was cheering Avery and Wes on through all the issues they had to deal with, especially her possible life-threatening genetic disease and his strong sense of duty to pay a debt to his friend that would cost him his own happiness.
I found it so interesting Wes felt he had to pay his friend back for saving his life when it was a gift freely given that couldn't really be repaid. Readers can't help but make the spiritual connection to Jesus freewill lifesaving gift to us and how we can only accept it, never repay it. Beautiful!
Mulberry Hollow is a phenomenal entertaining story centered around a small town on the Appalachian Trail complete with a delightful romance, great plot and characters I loved. Readers will be riveted to every page and breathing a satisfied happy sigh by the end of the story. I can't wait for the last sibling's book due out this September, Harvest Moon. I appreciate Thomas Nelson making a copy, through Netgalley, available for review. All thoughts and opinions are completely my own. .
