I will crush their skulls like eggs and break their bones like twigs beneath my feet… from “The Sparrow In The Ash Sea”
Sometimes believing in the impossible is the only way to survive reality… from “One More Time”
The sea sings songs. We make them stories… from “The Song Thieves”
As gentle and sweet as the ocean’s lullaby can be, its waters are dark, dangerous, and full of mystery….
Nine authors bring you ten stories centered around the ocean. A girl who steals secrets from the sea searches for her missing sister, following clues found in the sea's strange songs; A young widower seeks solace from the ocean and its mysteries after his wife dies; An unlikely hero must return the Goddess of the Sea to her temple before the ash sea overtakes all; On an island in the West of Ireland, a lost soul rescues a dying man—or does the man rescue him? From mermaids, levjatans, and sea-dragons to tales of an ash sea and ocean-songs, embark on this journey with us.
A truly excellent collection of short stories ranging from poignant love to drama and action with mythical flare. I was pleased to discover several new (to me) authors I enjoyed and to see a familiar favorite in the collection as well.
One of the best things about anthologies is discovering new-to-us authors. In Trials by Tides, there were so many good stories I felt like I had chanced upon a treasure trove.
A.M. Dilsaver’s gorgeous prose--so smooth it became hypnotic--took my breath away in the beautiful and heartrending The Calling. I love the originality of The Song Thief and the exploration of grief in this story and in One More Time which I found deeply moving.
I love how the real and the magical are interwoven so skilfully and yet so organically in Son of the Sea and One More Time. Manannan’s Daughter and The Story-Teller give two very different treatments of myths and legends, sweeping me away into otherworlds.
And finally, we have S. K. Sayari’s The Sparrow and the Ash Sea, the last in the collection, anchoring it as if to say, This is what story-telling is all about. In myths and fables, lore and legends, a relatable and engaging protagonist is beset by outer struggles that reflect their inner turmoil. They must dig deep and draw on hidden reserves as they seek what they want. . . only to realise, in a transcendent moment, what it is they truly need.
The best stories feel strangely familiar because they speak to us on a very deep level. They touch our hearts and souls, reminding us of our shared, heart-breakingly flawed, humanity, nudging us towards hope, affirming life, no matter our circumstances.
