NY Times and USA Today bestselling author Lexi Blake lives in North Texas with her husband, three kids, and the laziest rescue dog in the world. She began writing at a young age, concentrating on plays and journalism. It wasn't until she started writing romance and urban fantasy that she found the stories of her heart. She likes to find humor in the strangest places and believes in happy endings no matter how odd the couple, threesome, or foursome may seem.
Her first novel, Their Virgin Captive: Masters of Ménage, Book 1, was a collaboration with New York Times bestselling author Shayla Black. There are five more books available in the series: Their Virgin's Secret, Their Virgin Concubine, Their Virgin Princess, Their Virgin Hostage, and Their Virgin Secretary. The next book in the series, Their Virgin Mistress, is releasing this April.
In addition to the Masters of Ménage series, she is the author of the Masters and Mercenaries series. There are eight full-length novels and four novellas available now, with more coming in 2015.
In 2013, Lexi also began releasing her urban fantasy series, Thieves. The first five are available now, with Ripper, a spin-off to the series, coming in 2015.
I didn’t get what I wanted from this book. From the synopsis, I thought I would be reading an easy and light hearted small town romance. While I did get the small town feels, nothing about this was light hearted. My issues with this book were the characters and how long it felt. Seriously, it could have been just because I truly wasn’t enjoying it, but it really dragged.
Characters. They did a switch on me honestly. In the beginning, I just knew that I wasn’t going like Lila. She came off bitchy and so judgemental. I know that she went through something traumatic but up until about 30% on the book she was so unbearable. So what changed? The more she began to trust and get into a deeper relationship with Armie, we got to see a softer side to her. Soon, I began to see that she was too good for him. The best part about her character was that she loved hard and she knew her worth and what she deserved.
Armie. *deep sigh I started off enjoying his character. A sheriff single dad with a disabled daughter who was easy to like. He pursued Lisa and I couldn’t help but be smitten. However, when put in an uncomfortable situation he became a coward. I was shocked at how much his character changed and how he talked to Lisa. He lashed out and would stoop so low to hurt her just because he felt hurt or cornered. I really don’t think I’ve been this upset with a love interest in quite a long time. I don’t think that he wanted to be in a relationship, he just liked the idea of being in one.
I know that my review is solely based on characters but this book is really character driven. I can’t recommend it, However, if you are a fan of small towns and this author’s previous works then you might enjoy this better than I did.
I received an ARC via NetGalley for an honest review.
This book has me so excited that it's a new series. I just love small town romances. It was pretty funny how this small town reacted to the city slicker nurse coming to take over the town clinic. I grew up in a small town, so I could see some of this actually happen, which just had me completely entertained.
I loved the main couple just as much as all the side characters in the Butterfly Bayou. Lila was a little hard to connect with at first but the more you learn about her, the more you understand her. Then once she meets and gets closer to Armie, the real Lila started to shine through. I actually really admired her. She showed how important it is to love despite the risks and to love without fear. She was awesome.
Armie was a very easy hero to love. He's a single dad who you could actually feel how much he loved his daughter. Then the way he saw Lila and wasn't scared to go after her? Well, I just love a man who knows what he wants. It doesn't mean he doesn't mess up, but I even liked that as well. The author just handled everything about these two in such a way that the ending was so completely satisfying.
I really can't wait for more in the Butterfly Bayou series.
This was such a fun read with quirky characters that really resonated with me. I loved the wit and humor sprinkled throughout the story as it helped to deal with some of the heavier topics that were being introduced.
There was something about this hero that captivated me and I wish I could put my finger on what exactly it was. He wasn’t the typical alpha hero and yet he was very protective. Whatever this author imbibed him with, I loved it.
The conflict between this hero and heroine was unique and there were moments when their drama made me tear up. There really isn’t anything better than a book that can make you laugh and cry. So glad a book buddy yelled at me to read this one.
I enjoyed this book so much! I absolutely loved the residents of the bayou. There was so much packed into this story that I don't think I took a breath the whole way through!
This author is well known for her BDSM series. Haven’t read them at all and I’m not looking to read them anytime soon. This was CR and I thought I should give it a chance plus the cover has the one thing that would make me read any book. You can guess what it is.
I wanted to read it because of the dog but he wasn’t even that much in the book.
The first 30% was slow and b o r i n g asf.
First of all, I hate, hate when in books and IRL people don’t treat animals like they should be treated. Nothing gets my blood hot when an animal is abused, fictional or IRL. The poor dog was dumped and spent 3 months fending for himself until the heroine rescued him. Animal abuse makes me a raging murdering bitch. No sense in denying it.
Many readers said that the heroine was cold and a bitch and she was, I had no problem with her being this way. In fact I enjoyed her very much. She spoke her mind and was not scared to do it.
Hero, what can I say about the hero. Well apparently hero was very well liked by many readers. Yes, he was a good father. A good man, but a horrible boyfriend. Not in the sense that he abused the heroine. But he really was a shitty boyfriend. He was embarrassed of her one time, he wanted her to “fit” in the mold that the town had or perhaps in the mold that he wanted her to fit in. He let himself be manipulated by his 16 year old daughter. Yes I get that he wanted to protect her and I also get that maybe it wasn’t the heroine’s place to do what she did but she was doing it because she wanted to help her. The way he treated the heroine was bad enough. The thing is that the heroine was a pushover with him. She spoke her mind with everyone but once the hero spoke his mind she was just ok with everything he said. He should have groveled but he never did. Authors just because the man apologizes doesn’t mean that is groveling enough. That it’s not even close to groveling.
Another thing there was zero chemistry between them. They told me that they liked each other but I just didn’t see it. No passion, no chemistry, nothing, zilch, nada.
I was liking Noelle (daughter) but she manipulated her father into thinking that the heroine was mean to her. And like any parent should and would have done, He took her side and proceeded to hurt the heroine and break things with her. He kicked her out of his house when she had no place to go.
Safety: Hero has been celibate for over 2 years. Heroine for over 1 year. There’s a bit of OW drama from a lady that went on 3 dates with the hero. The heroine put her in her place. Hero was a divorced single father. They met months before the book starts. It was also mentioned that she wasn’t good at sex and that he was a player when he was young. I’m assuming before he was married. And maybe after?
3 stars for the heroine because she rescued the dog and because she was a cold bitch. 🤣 0 stars for the relationship.
Butterfly Bayou was a good start to what I'm sure will be a fantastic series. Lexi Blake delivered a remarkable and riveting romance brimming with scorching hot passion, angst, light-hearted humor, and all the feels. I enjoyed my visit to Papillion, Louisiana, where the sexy sheriff and single dad, Armie LaVigne, found the perfect woman who turned his world upside down ~ Lila Daley. She comically and unexpectedly fell into this hot lawman's life, courtesy of a speed trap guarded by an alligator affectionately named Otis.
Working as a nurse in Dallas, Lila witnessed a horrific tragedy involving her friend and colleague that left her (and me) completely shattered. Hoping to escape the nightmares of the past, she decided to leave the hustle and bustle of a big city ER and restart life in Papillion, as the town's nurse practitioner. Trying to fit in with the locals, and struggling to overcome several challenges, the last thing Lila wanted was to fall for Armie. Much to her surprise, he and his daughter, Noelle, were exactly what she needed. Their connection was instantaneous. The chemistry between them sizzled. But despite their intense feelings, Armie and Lila fought the attraction until they deliciously surrendered. A journey towards love that was extremely bumpy, but well worth the wait, I relished every moment spent with this couple.
I adored Lila. Strong-willed, compassionate, courageous ~ she was a heroine I truly admired. A woman so riddled with guilt over tragic circumstances that were out of her control, her sufferings pulled at my heartstrings. Rigid at first, Lila was all business when it came to her career, yet possessed a gentler side, especially when it came to her patients, Armie, and Noelle. Watching her character grow, gain confidence, and find the courage to fall love was touching.
Armand "Armie" LaVigne was a loving and a swoon-worthy hero. A single dad, who was very protective when it came to his disabled daughter, Armie was also dealing with his fair share of guilt from the past. Despite all the complications in his life, meeting Lila was a game-changer, as his attraction to her was fierce and intense. His persistent chase to win her heart and earn trust was stirring. However, he frustrated me for a bit when his commitment to Lila faltered when a situation with Noelle arose. Regardless of the nerve-wracking relationship tensions, Armie managed to win back my affections eventually as he became the strong man Lila needed. In turn, Lila's love forever changed both Arnie and Noelle's for the better.
Butterfly Bayou was more than just small-town contemporary romance. There's lots of angst, drama, and tension to savor, as well as several story-lines that surround this couple and secondary characters, which had me on edge. All in all, this first installment in the Butterfly Bayou Series was an enjoyable, highly emotional, and sexy read.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this publication.
Butterly Bayou is a delightful story, about an uptight city girl who survives a horrendous experience and decides to recover from it by moving to rural Louisiana and taking over a clinic in a small town. is a delightful story, about an uptight city girl who survives a horrendous experience and decides to recover from it by moving to rural Louisiana and taking over a clinic in a small town.
Lila Daley studied medicine as a way to overcome her crappy childhood and was happy with her fancy apartment, designer clothes and boyfriends who never challenged her. But when a friend is attacked and killed in her hospital and she is taken hostage, her view of everything changes. Unable to enter her hospital without seeing the attack, she moves to Papillion, Louisiana to be close to her sister. No sooner has she reached the community, than an alligator in the road causes her to speed to get away from it, and the hot sheriff, Armie LeVeigne, gives her a ticket and asks her out.
Quite honestly, I didn’t like Armie. From giving Lila a ticket to talking her into living with him, then kicking her out, he was not kind, and his actions spoke louder than his words. It took intervention from his friends and another situation where she was endangered for him to realize he really did love her. I’m not sure I liked Lila, but I did respect and admire her character. Instead of letting one bad moment define her, she moved on, opening herself to love and caring. She is a true heroine, saving people’s lives and making differences in her chosen community.
The secondary characters, from Rene, Zep and Nicole to the animals, Peanut and Otis, were fun to read about. The story line is captivating but straightforward, and I look forward to more in this series.

2 "Do you know why they call this Butterfly Bayou?" Stars
This started out really great for me. I enjoyed where our heroine, Lila Daley, came from and where she was headed very much. The scene of Butterfly Bayou and it's colorful cast of townsfolk made for an interesting escape. And the town Sheriff and his interesting, charming daughter also were two people for whom I wanted to stand behind.
The storytelling became tedious and dry somewhere around 40%. I was getting too bored but since I liked the characters I had hoped it would pick up. Unfortunately the same communication break downs continued to happen between the two main characters and I saw no development or growth from either until literally the end. The same arguments and feelings don't show me depth or make understand them any better and I get bored.
I found the story had some bright spots though if you set the actual romance aside. The friendships cultivated. The small town feel. How Lila found something in herself worth saving as an individual that she could extend to a place she didn't understand at first. Those moments felt like small victories in the story and I was grateful for them.
Butterfly Bayou by Lexi Blake is the First book in the Butterfly Bayou Series. This is the story of Armand 'Armie' LaVigne and Lila Daley. Lila was a ER nurse is a big city but a incident happened that made her rethink her life. So, she headed to Papillon, Louisiana to work in the small town's medical clinic. But right from the start she knows she is in a different world with its corky people with their corky ways. This of course leads her to some funny situation learning about small towns. But it also leads her to Arman who is the Sheriff of the town along with his daughter Noelle Armand is very protective of his daughter and her issues but he can't help but be drawn to Lila. Pretty soon he knows she it is for him but sometimes the past can come back. Enjoyed their story and hope to read more from this author.
A complex mix of emotions fill this contemporary romance novel. Nurse practitioner Lila Daley is one of the toughest heroine’s I’ve ever encountered in a book. At times, the story was hard to read. Sheriff Arnie LaVigne is a tough, good-hearted guy. His life has centered around his wheelchair-bound daughter, Noelle, until he met Lila. Taking over the local medical practice in a town that doesn’t trust outsiders is hard. But Lila is hard-headed. Even when someone is set on killing her for interfering in their plans. Steamy sex, explicit language.
What first drew me in about this book was the small town romance description and the fact that there are dogs playing a part in the story. I love small town romances quite a lot and the 'vibe' this book gives off definitely screams VIRGIN RIVER.
The characters were likeable enough, but somehow I just also couldn't really completley fall in love with them and form a strong connection I guess. I'm not sure yet if it's because of the writing or for the fact that the romance was not as well developed on Both sides/POV..
Whenever I read, I had a strong reading pace, and went through the pages quite fast, but it was not that I was constantly looking forward to picking this book up again when I was not reading, you know?
So I'm still a bit indecisive about whether or not I'll be continuing with this trilogy, seeing there's still such an incredibly huge TBR pile waiting to be read. So for the time being, I'll be focusing on the already existing TBR pile and maybe I'll pick up the 2nd book in digital format someday to see what I'll think of he next book and so that I'm able to get a bit more aquianted with this author's writing.
If you like small town romances, likeable characters that have enough of depth written to them, some suspsense and a sexy romance, this might just be your cup of tea ;) O, and don't forget 'pet' alligators? They've been added to the mix as well, because you'll be spending some time in the Bayou of course ;)
Going into this story I was expecting a small town romance, which I did get, but I usually associate them with a lighter romance and this was WAY heavier than I expected. Maybe my perception of small town romances is wrong but I can only go on what I have read in the past and this one was very different.
Lila is a nurse practitioner in Dallas Texas and after a HORRIBLE event takes place she moves to the small town of Papillon Louisiana to be closer to her sister and take over the medical practice in town. I think the only funny part of the story is the way the people in town initially treated her, the city slicker, and honestly it wasn't that funny.
Armie is the town's sheriff and a single father to a sixteen year old daughter who is in a wheelchair. I really liked his daughter, even tough there were a couple of times where I didn't agree with what she was doing.
Armie and Lila were interesting together, they definitely had the chemistry but they each had so much baggage I think it was hard for them to really connect as a couple for a while.
While I liked this story, I didn't love it and that is because of the mind frame I had going in. When you expect something light and you're hit with a heavy subject that doesn't just go away after the first couple of chapters I like to be prepared for it. I think I would have probably rated this book higher if I had gone in knowing that it was based around a subject that is a trigger warning for some.
I don't normally put spoilers in my reviews and I really don't consider this a spoiler since it happens in the first chapter but be warned. If you have been in a domestic abuse relationship this book might hit some triggers for you, it did for me and I wasn't prepared so I am putting it out there so you are prepared.
I loved the secondary characters and I added all of the books to my TBR shelf that are listed already. I cannot wait for Roxie and Zep's book!
Happy Reading!!!

Butterfly Bayou is a new series by Lexi Blake. I will admit, the cover totally won me over. I mean, a cute dog, in boat? Adorable! Small town romance? Great! My actual feelings on the story are much more mixed however.
Let's start with what worked! The heroine, Lila, makes some real personal growth and I love that in a character. She was kind of rude in the beginning, but I think I was able to see that as a defense mechanism. The hero is a sheriff, single dad, and a little wary of letting any woman in his life. Totally understandable given that his daughter is disabled. He pursues Lila though, which is great! There is a scruffy dog that worms it way into Lila's life and I love books with dogs that help a character soften.
So, where did it lose me? The book is WAY heavier than I expected. I mean, I looked at the cover and thought "bright, sunny, small town romance". WRONG. Seriously, Lila has baggage, Armie has baggage, there is a lot of angst and nothing is light. Maybe because I went into this expecting something less angsty I am being more critical. I just know that the longer the book went on, the less I was enjoying it. Armie changes and does some really dumb things; this seemed totally out of character from the beginning of the book. Lila actually becomes more likable as the story progresses (which I expected), but I was so mad at Armie, I kind of wanted her to leave him.
Butterfly Bayou left me confused. There were several things I really enjoyed about the story; but there were just as many things that I didn't love. Its been awhile since I read a book that left me this on the fence. I decided to check goodreads. Most of the reviews are 5 stars! Maybe it was because I went into the story with a preconceived idea and the book didn't match that. So, take my review as perhaps a cautionary tale to not judge a book by its cover! As a side note, I do think I will read the next books in the series! They sound interesting and now I know not to expect light hearted just because there is a puppy on the cover.

It took me quite a while to read this book. I kept reading a new pages, then putting it down. Some of my reaction might be expectations. The blurb pointed in the direction of a fluffy small town romance, which given the news these days I was in the mood for.
But what we got was a story about abuse shoved into the romance, neither of them quite successful: the abuse thread seemed to take over the story, the romance seemed unmoored and even perfunctory at times, particularly as the hero weathervaned back and forth, becoming emotionally abusive himself.
The side characters were lovely, and so was the setting. Blake is a fine writer, it's just that this particular book wasn't a good fit for me.
Special thanks to Berkley for providing our copy in exchange for an honest & fair review.
So, this one started out with super-strong VIRGIN RIVER vibes. Honestly, maybe a little too much like VIRGIN RIVER for a super fan like me. The heroine is a FNP heading to a small town after a traumatic event. From here, we meet the love interest, the clinic and townspeople are not very accepting of her. She tries her best to regain her footing in this new environment.
For me, this one vacillates between cutesy & sorrowful trauma. A bit too much trauma for me. The synopsis does try to warn readers of a tragic accident in the heroine's past. Honestly, I'm calling this one up to the pandemic as the back & forth between new place and constant reminders fo the past was so saddening to me. That being said, had I read this at another time, I may have really liked it.
I've never read Lexi Blake on her own but I have when she's written with Shayla Black, but never on her own. So when I saw the cover of her new series I had to try it. I've been in a small-town binge for a bit now.
Plus I just loved the cute cover and hoped it would be a series I'd enjoy.
I will tell you the book starts out with a bang and you have to wonder where it's going. I didn't read the back of the book so I went in with no clue what it was about. I often do this because I like the surprise I get when I'm reading the story. Sure I knew it was going to be a small-town romance just from looking at the cover. Or I guessed it would be. So I didn't go into it totally blind, just somewhat.
I was glad that I did. Like I said the beginning was so good. It lest me wondering for a second what was going to happen and then we got into the meat of the story and I can say that I really enjoyed it.
I wasn't shocked that the town acted so badly to Lila. She's from out of town and doesn't really fit in there. Some of the people in town are so funny. They can't handle a new doctor in town. In this case a nurse practitioner. The way they treated her was pretty horrible, I did think that her sister had a clue to how they'd treat her but still let her sink money into a pit of a home and business.
You will get a chuckle on how Lila and Armie met. I really at times liked Armie but I also didn't agree with him about some things. You'll have to read the story to understand where I'm going with that comment. You need to read it for your own and judge.
I also really liked Armie's daughter. She had so much personality. A great addition to the story. I will say that life with a kid is never easy and Armie had it even harder but handle most of it very well. I didn't care for how he treated Lila at times because of his fears but in the end, they worked it out.
Much more happens but you need to read the story to truly enjoy it. This was a great start to this new series and I can't wait for more to come. I have a bit of a wait but I can't wait for Zep's story. What to you meet him. By far the best character in the story.
Oh, I love a hero who admits he was wrong. And Armie wasn't wrong just once, this guy had a lot of apologizing to do. Lucky for Lila, the good people of the bayou town of Papillon made sure our single dad sheriff Armie learned his lesson. Lexi Blake created such a slyly charming, nutty Southern haven in Papillon and I can't wait for more.
But first, this is really Lila Daley's story and she may be my favorite Daley ever. Until Lila, all of Will Daley's sisters kind of blended together (so many L names!) and I was getting a bit concerned that they would all hook up with their brother's fellow doms at Sanctum. To be honest, I was also convinced a Lexi Blake romance just wouldn't work without Sanctum, Ian Taggart, or her usual BDSM crazysauce. I'm happy to report I was very, very wrong.
After a gut-wrenching workplace incident where she witnessed her friend's murder, Lila has started fresh in Papillon, a bayou town far from Dallas in so many ways. Lila, having raised her siblings thanks to a druggie mom and then becoming a no-nonsense nurse, is confident she will hide herself in her new role as the town's nurse practitioner. Immediately, Lila realizes she will have to deal with suspicious and judgmental townfolk, an alligator speed trap, an abandoned dog, and an instantly enamoured sheriff. Despite Lila's tough exterior, all find their way into her sternly guarded heart.
Unlike the alpha doms of Sanctum, Armie felt real and accessible. At forty, this single dad's whole world is taking care of his 16-year-old wheelchair-bound daughter Noelle. His overly protective nature blind him to Lila's medical expertise and belief that Noelle can walk again and repeatedly Armie makes boneheaded declarations or decisions that leave Lila alone. For once, Lexi Blake created a beautifully emotional love story where relationship problems (or criminal operations) couldn't be fixed by BDSM.
If you're like me, you picked up this book just because you're a Lexi Blake fan. The blurb seemed interesting so that was good. But mostly I'm a big fan of this author's writing and have pretty much loved everything she's written that I've read so far. She's basically an auto-buy author for me.
So when I heard about the release of Butterfly Bayou it was an instant yes for me. But within the first few pages I went from
'the blurb seemed interesting'
to
'sitting up, paying attention, I am here for this'.
From those very first few moments, I needed to know more about leading lady Lila. So much was given about her right away, and yet not nearly enough. Why was she the way she was? What made her tick? I needed to know more.
And as the story unfolded I got lost in the words as I often do with this author. I fell in love with the leading man Armie and his daughter. I watched Lila open up and let her walls down. And I got addicted to this small southern town.
This book was amazing and I cannot recommend it enough.
I’m ashamed to admit this is the first book I have read by Lexi Blake and I now know why my best friend has been telling me for years that this was an author I needed to read....... This book ticked all my boxes, it’s a story with all the feels and it has characters you will adore, oh and let’s not forget you will be captivated from the first page to the last line. Butterfly Bayou is book 1 in the new series and if this book is anything to go by this author will certainly have a hit on her hands. This story is set in the Bayou town of Papillon, Louisiana also know as Butterfly Bayou and I have to say Ms Blake did a wonderful job describing the area. Nurse Practitioner Lila Daley has just moved to town and she is struggling to fit in with the local residents, she is ruffling more feathers than she is treating patients so her sister Lisa steps in to try and ease her in to quirky community. Armie is the local sheriff and he also try’s to help Lila settle in but the problem is Lila has no filter on her mouth and that upsets people... Armie has tried his best but it’s his adorable daughter Noelle who really breaks through and finds the real Lila when she approaches the nurse for advice on a subject she can’t talk to her father about. This book has the perfect mix of love, drama and humour and I think it will appeal to a wide range of romance readers. Looking forward to book 2 in the series.
What a wonderful story! This book is filled with lots of small town, close community care, humor with things like lawn tractor races and an alligator named Otis who assists the town sheriff's department with speed traps, loving couples and some seriously bad guys. I liked getting to meet and get to know the locals, especially newcomer, nurse practitioner Lila Daley and Sheriff Armie LaVigne and his daughter Noelle. Lila and Armie both shared some very emotional, gut-wrenching moments which added greatly to the buildup to their HEA.
This is a truly delightful book from master storyteller Lexi Blake. I am really looking forward to the next book in her Butterfly Bayou series, Bayou Baby.
