Set in the fan favorite Amish village of Harvest, Ohio, the latest novel in USA Today bestselling author Amanda Flower's Amish Matchmaker series brings back the unlikely sleuthing duo of an Amish widow and her zany, thrice divorced best friend. Will appeal to fans of cozy mysteries, small-town mysteries, wholesome romance, inspirational fiction, and readers of Jennifer Beckstrand, Charlotte Hubbard, Rachel J. Good, and other authors of Amish fiction.
Millie’s decidedly not Amish best friend, Lois Henry, is outspoken, colorful, and so hopelessly romantic, she’s had four husbands. Millie doesn’t judge, and she also doesn’t expect to run into Lois’s most recent ex, gambler Gerome Moorhead, in small-town Harvest, Ohio. With him is the very young, new Mrs. Moorhead, aka “Honeybee.” Lois is outraged, but Millie is completely shocked to learn the next day that Gerome is already a widower . . .
When a large wood carving at the cozy Munich Chalet falls on “Honeybee,” all eyes turn toward Lois. Who else would want a tourist—a complete stranger—dead? And half of Harvest witnessed Lois’s enmity toward the young woman. Suddenly Millie must put aside her sewing needle and flex her sleuthing skills. She’s no stranger to a murder investigation, after all, and if she doesn’t learn who killed Honeybee, Lois could go from Millie’s boisterous best friend to her horrified prison penpal . . .

Best Friends Millie Fisher and Lois Henry get the chance to put their sleuthing skills to work in Amanda Flower’s Honeymoons Can Be Hazardous. When Lois’s ex-husband comes to Harvest with his new bride Paige Moorhead, he and Lois have an public argument. When Paige meets her unexpected death in a bazaar accident deputy sheriff Luke Little rules it as murder. Lois finds herself on the list of suspects for Paige’s murder. Millie and Lois spring into action and solving this murder takes high priority over matchmaking and serving up coffee and blueberry pie at the Sunbeam Cafe’.
I let myself get caught up in this cute and sometimes humorous Cozy Mystery. I have read every book in this series and I feel like I personally know each of the characters . This book focuses on drug abuse in Holmes County. Pastor Brook is in the process of setting up a drug counseling center at his church. Deaths from overdose happen to the Amish as well as the nonAmish. I loved this author’s writing style and the smooth flow of her stories. Her Cozies are definitely easy reads and page turners. There is an excerpt of Blueberry Blunder at the back of the book of the Author’s next release in her Amish Candy Shop Mysteries.
I recommend this book to readers of Cozy Mystery and fans of the Author. This is book 4 of An Amish Matchmaker series. It is scheduled to be released on 12/27/22.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed here in this review are my own.
This is an Amish Cozy Mystery, and this is the fourth book in An Amish Matchmaker Mystery series. I have read and reviewed the third book in this series before picking up this book, but I do think you can read this book as a standalone. I love the characters in this book, and it is so much fun following the characters in this book. I really enjoyed the craziness that the two main characters got into solving the mystery in this book. This book was so much fun to read, and I really liked the mystery in this book too. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
This is the fourth book in the Amish Matchmaker Mystery series and the second series set in this universe (and by far my favorite). I love that the dynamic sleuthing duo are two grandmothers one Amish and one English. They are amazing characters and the side characters in this world are also awesome. I also love getting a little bit of Amish culture with the cute, funny, and light mysteries. I should say characters do continue to develop as the series continues but this book could be read as a standalone. Millie and Lois again find themselves at the site of a murder, this time as the poor woman is killed. But that poor woman happens to be one of Lois’ ex-husband’s new wife so while the couple was together they worry Lois may be a suspect so of course they have to investigate.
The Amish Matchmaker Mystery series is an enjoyable series that overlaps with the Amish Candy Mystery series, both set in Harvest, Ohio, where the Amish and English live, work, and support each together in a great community effort. The characters are likable, realistic, and well developed. Millie is the Amish matchmaker and Lois, her best friend, who happens to be English, love to solve mysteries. These two sixty something year old ladies are so fun together and really complement each other's personalities. In this case, Lois and Millie are thrown into a murder mystery involving the new bride of Lois's ex=husband. The mystery goes deep into the community and shows how the lure of money and drugs can hurt people and destroy lives. This story has an interesting mystery to unravel with suspense, danger, and humor. We do have visits from some of the characters from the Amish Candy Mystery series make an appearance. It ended with a little surprise forecast of the next book. Looking forward to it. Great for cozy mystery lovers, especially those who enjoy Amish stories. I received a complimentary copy for the purpose of an honest review from Kensington Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
I love this series, and I enjoyed this addition! Millie and Lois are such a fun duo! I love the little cameos of the Amish Candy shop characters. The theme of this book was a little heavier than I expected. I highly recommend this series to all cozy lovers, fans of the Amish candy shop, and lovers of Amish reading! I received an arc of this book in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank netgalley, the author Amanda Flower, and the publisher for the opportunity to review this book!
Millie and Lois may be an odd match for friends, but they really make it work. Millie is Amish, and Lous is an Englisher, however, their friendship is so much fun, and Lois is a sure spitfire. Millie is a matchmaker, she can sense when a couple is made for each other, but sometimes Millie must be firm if she feels a match is not meant to be. Between the goats and Jethro the pig, I spent a lot of time laughing while reading this terrific book. #HoneymoonsCanBeHazardous #NetGalley
Millie’s friend, Lois, is more than stunned when Gerome, one of her former husbands (she’s had four!) shows up in Harvest – with his new, much younger, wife in tow. When the new bride is killed the next day, Lois and Gerome are at the top of the police’s suspect list.
This is another entertaining series set in the mostly Amish town of Harvest, Ohio, which I have enjoyed since the first book. It’s a spinoff of the Amish Candy Shop series, but only a few of the characters from the original series show up in this series, and then only in cameos. While I learn more about the Amish way of life from the Candy Shop series, there are still lessons in this Matchmaker series too. I like that Millie’s best friend is anything but Amish, but they use their differences to their advantage, during their investigations and the day to day lives.
The mystery in this book was challenging, because the murder victim was a stranger to the area, so there weren’t many suspects other than the obvious two. As Millie and Lois investigated, they uncovered more clues that added more people to the list, as well as a good motive, and I thought I knew who the killer was. I was wrong, of course, but at least I had the motive right. I look forward to reading more of Millie and Lois’s adventures in the next book in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Honeymoons Can Be Hazardous by Amanda Flower is a fun cozy mystery. I laughed often while reading the fourth An Amish Matchmaker Mystery. Millie and Lois have a new case. Gerome Moorhead, Lois’ most recent ex-husband, is in Harvest, Ohio on his honeymoon to the newest Mrs. Moorhead (aka Honeybee). When Honeybee gets clocked by an oversized cuckoo, Lois rises to the top of the suspect list. Millie aka the Amish Marple is on the case. Of course, Lois is not about to be left behind. Can the duo uncover the killer before Lois gets carted off to the hoosegow? Honeymoons Can Be Hazardous is a delight to read. I like Amanda Flower’s writing style. It is relaxed and engaging. I quickly found myself drawn into the story. I was quickly flipping the pages to find out what happened next. I love a book that makes me laugh. There are great characters in this series. They are fun and quirky. Millie has her goats who seem to understand her. She has added a cat to the household. Lois is a hoot. She is the opposite of Millie. Lois likes busy patterns and loud colors. She carries a purse that reminds me of Mary Poppins satchel. You never know what Lois will pull out of her purse (there is at least one rubber mallet in there—you never know when you are going to need one--and let us not forget the staple gun). Margot Rawlings is the village’s community organizer. This is one woman that you wish to avoid, or you will find yourself “volunteered” to help with an event. Let us not forget Juliet Brook, the pastor’s wife, and her pet pig, Jethro. Juliet plans to make Jethro a Hollywood star. The whodunit was entertaining. Lois and Millie manage to get into a scrape or two (thanks to Lois). Millie asks questions and searches for clues. I like how the whodunit involved both the Amish and the English communities. The mystery delved into an issue that is prevalent in our country. No sect is immune as we see in this story. My only complaint is that the mystery was easy to solve. I easily picked out the guilty party early in the story. The antics of Millie’s goats had me laughing out loud. The author gave the goats great personalities. Honeymoons Can Be Hazardous can be read as a standalone, but you are missing out by not reading all the books in this delightful series. There is a preview of Blueberry Blunder at the end which is the eighth An Amish Candy Shop Mystery. Honeymoons Can Be Hazardous is a witty whodunit with a polka dotted pig, a clobbered bride, a bulging bag, rampageous goats, a caring community, and the Amish Marple.
Millie Fisher and Lois Henry are the Odd Couple of Harvest, Ohio. Millie may not be the strictest Amish woman in town but her heart is Amish. Her best friend Lois? Not even Amish. Not only that but flamboyant, outspoken, colorful, and has multiple divorces behind her. She's still a romantic, however, and hasn't given up on love even as Millie and she push toward age 70. Together, these two make a formidable sleuthing team.
Amanda Flower is one of my go-to authors, not to mention that I enjoy following her own farm adventures on Facebook. I enjoy how she deftly blends in bits about the Amish culture and beliefs in her Amish related books, all the while allowing Millie and others to push back gently against its strictures. In addition, Flower is a master at character building, creating characters with both flaws and strengths, such as the Bishop's overbearing wife who often seems more intent on enforcing Amish laws than celebrating its heart, with Millie always finding something to admire about her even when exasperated at her attitudes. It isn't just the humans who have strong personalities, either. There's Jethro the seemingly always in mischief pig, a bit of a tv star in his own right on a blended over character from another Amish series by Flower. Then there are rambunctious goats Phillip and Peter, who are cranky but loving and protective of their human, even when they perhaps think their human, Millie, has lost her mind. In other words, the characters that people this series seem real enough that one might expect to meet them should you happen upon an Amish gathering in Ohio.
As for the mystery, it's an odd one. Who killed Paige via a, no lie, a cuckoo clock falling from a tower (see cover photo)? Millie and Lois are on the site when it happens since Paige's new husband just happened to be one of Lois' ex-husbands. What are the odds of such a strange event being murder? As it turns out, pretty high. In the meantime, everyone in town is saddened by the drug fueled death of an Amish father's son. I won't detail the plot further except to say as bizarre as the means of murder, it works and flows smoothly and steadily forward. Life events often intertwine and they certainly do in this instance, leading to both a sad but satisfying conclusion. Give it a read.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks for inviting me back to Harvest, Ohio, to spend some time hanging out with Millie and Lois. It was fun to see Bailey blend over into this series and I'm looking forward to finding out how her business expansion is coming along.
This a good 3 stars, probably 3 1/2! The characters are delightful as well as quirky. The murder mystery aspect was well handled. If you can see a murder mystery as humerous, this one certainly is. It was a great light read and I will definitely look for more from this author.
Sometimes the hardest part of writing a review is figuring out how to start. I could say I love cozy mysteries. Or, I could say I love characters that are different and maybe a little crazy. I could also say I like stories that take me to a location I’ve never been before. All of these apply in this review, so I guess I’ve started.
Millie and Lois have been friends since childhood. Their relationship is a bit odd since Millie is Amish and Lois is not. They are there for each other because they are best friends. Now, these ladies are approaching seventy years old but they don’t let that stop them from investigating local murders much to the dismay of the deputy sheriff and the Amish community and their families.
This cozy has it all, murder, mystery, drugs, lots of characters including an ex-husband and I even learned a few things about the Amish way of life. This is the 4th book in this series but I did not feel I was at a disadvantage by not having read the previous three books. I found this an enjoyable read and, oh yes, the goats, the cat and the pig. LOL
I won this ebook in a First Reads giveaway. Thank you to #Kensingtonbooks and the author #Amandaflowers.
Amanda Flower is my favorite cozy mystery author. And she continues to amaze me with her ability to make each book better than the last. Her storytelling is stellar. And in this one, she even tackles an issue that almost every family in America has been touched by or affected by. Goats Phillip and Peter are up to their usual antics that always make me laugh out loud. Millie and Lois's friendship is as strong as ever. One scene was particularly touching. The mystery was very intriguing and had me guessing until the end. And the ending....wow!! There is a scene between Millie and the person who turns out to be the perpetrator, that is so heartbreaking that the tears started flowing. This series is one of my favorites in the cozy mystery genre.
Honeymoons Can Be Hazardous is the fourth book in the An Amish Matchmaker Mystery series by Amanda Flower.
This series has the most enjoyable and exciting duo that I have read. Millie Fisher is an Amish matchmaker, and Lois Henry is Englisch and has divorced four times. Lois works at her grandaughter’s Sunbeam Cafe.
Millie and Lois enter the Sunbeam Cafe, and Lois is shocked to see her fourth ex-husband, Rocksino Guy, at the cash register. Lois soon learns he is in Harvest with his young wife, Paige, whom he married just days ago. The next morning, Lois wants to apologize for her rude behavior and head for the motel where the couple is staying. The German theme motel has an enormous cuckoo clock, and as it starts to ring the hour, the cuckoo breaks off and falls, killing Paige. The local police have ruled the death an accident, but Lois and Millie don’t think it was an accident. They begin their investigation by sneaking into the cuckoo clock and soon find that the cable that operated was attached to the cuckoo had been deliberately cut partially through so that the cable would snap when the cuckoo began announcing the hour. With this information, Millie and Lois can convince the police that Paige's death was murder.
A book subplot deals with the increased use of illegal drugs by Amish and Englisch teens and young adults. The recent death of a young Amish man. Reverend Brook, pastor of the church on the town square, has started a drug counseling program open to everyone youth in Harvest. The author skillfully intertwines the drug trafficking problem into the murder investigation.
I found the book well-written, plotted, and a quick read. The characters are wonderfully developed and extremely enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed the banter between Lois and Millie. There were enough twists and turns that I was kept guessing until the final reveal of the killer.
I’m anxiously awaiting the book to see what Millie and Lois might get involved in.
Millie and Lois are back in action again! I love that the main characters are grandmotherly ages and full of life and vitality! The author does an outstanding job of making these characters believable and they show their ages as they huff and puff up stairs or doing chores a bit slower than a younger character is, but she also shows that they are intelligent in a manner that only comes with age and experience. The mystery is well written to keep you guessing, but not be completely out of line with the story. I must say that I love the "Amish Marple" and sidekick Lois as the super sleuths that they are! It is also so intriguing to get a glimpse of the Amish life through the eyes of this author. I grew up in a community that also had a significant Amish population and it is fun to remember some of my experiences with the members of the community while reading this series! I'm looking forward to more antics from Millie and Lois in the future!
Millie and Lois are back at the granny sleuthing again! This time is is to solve the unfortunate death by cuckoo clock.
I really liked how a couple plot lines were intertwined in this mystery, death and drug issues in the couny. We also go a glimpse into the issues of the Amish youth and got to hear about one of Lois's exes. Of course I always enjoy all of the animals cameos as well, crazy goats.
As with other books in the series, I was guessing at the killer, but really didn't fully make all of the connections until the characters were figuring it out as well. I'm excited for the next book in this series and the candy shop series. So many amateur sleuths in Harvest!
Thank you to Kensington and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this ARC for my honest review.
I enjoy all my visits to Harvest, OH, through Amanda Flower’s different series; they’re both different enough that it doesn’t feel like just one series but there are a few characters that overlap, which is nice. I love the friendship between Millie and Lois; they’re both so different but complement each other well and it’s heartwarming to read about their decades long friendship. The mystery in this one was a lot darker than I expected (yes, it’s murder and that’s always dark) with the drugs involved but I found both the method of murder and the crime very creative. With that surprise at the end, I can’t wait to read the next one.
I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.
Another solid installment in the Amish matchmaker series. Millie, series heroine..the Amish matchmaker, and her childhood best friend, Lois, become embroiled in another homicide investigation. Lois, a flamboyant Englisher, runs into ex-husband #4 while he is on is latest honeymoon. When his bride ends up crushed by a cuckoo from giant cuckoo clock, Lois feels obligated to clear his name. Clever mystery and the characters are well drawn and engaging. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Who doesn’t love Millie? No one who has read this series could not love her and Lois! They are always getting into trouble, and Millie gets into more than a good Amish woman should, but that’s okay; she knows her limits. When Lois’ ex-husband, one of four, brings his new wife, a furniture buyer, to Harvest, there is no way anyone could expect anything other than murder to occur. Honeymoons Can Be Hazardous lives up to the title, and readers will find themselves happy and occupied for several hours.
Lois has many exes, but when one of them comes to town on his honeymoon, things go wrong quickly. His wife of two days is a furniture buyer looking to close some deals with local Amish artisans, but shortly after a run-in with Lois, she becomes the victim of a murder. Did Lois snap and kill her, or did her ex-gambler husband do it? Maybe it was someone she worked with or someone in the Amish community. No matter where Millie and Lois look, they find suspects and motives, but their investigation could lead to their demise.
Honeymoons Can Be Hazardous is a fun-filled adventure through Amish country with Millie and Lois; even uptight Ruth gets involved. The goats are their usual delightful selves; they have become very attached to Millie. All the normal characters are still around and do what they can to help Millie and Lois; even some of the furniture makers help as much as they can. The suspects are varied, with Lois being the main one. The killer, once unmasked, isn’t unexpected, and the motive is very topical. From beginning to end, this book is a fantastic read. Everyone will want to read all the other books in this series and others by this author. I highly recommend all of Amanda’s books to readers of any genre.
When Lois’s ex husband shows up at the diner, she is not a happy woman. But trying to move on beyond their bad marriage, she decides to apologize the next day…only to find the new bride murdered right in front of her and Millie. Could Lois have been married to a murderer? She doesn’t think so, but maybe she was wrong, so now she and Millie are on the case to find out who had it in the for the new bride and why.
I adore this series which is a spin off from the Amish Candy Shop series, which I also love. While it’s not the norm for the Amish and Englischers to be BFFs, they do have friends in the community and I’m sure there are a few like Lois and Millie who are best of friends. However, it’s the mischief the two get up to in trying to sleuth that keeps me coming back. It’s the Amish version of Lucy and Ethel at times. The well developed characters, solid whodunit, and excellent writing keeps me coming back for more. I never miss a new release from Amanda Flower, whatever the series, because she’s an awesome writer! if you can’t read one of her books yet, there’s no time like the present! Each reads fine as a standalone, but you’ll add the previous ones to your TBR list before you know it.
This is the fourth book in An Amish Matchmaker Mystery series and this was another enjoyable outing with Millie Fisher and her best friend, Lois Henry. Millie and Lois have an odd friendship with Millie being Amish and Lois being an Englisher and both being grandmothers. One of Lois' ex-husbands shows up in Harvest with his new bride Paige Moorhead. He and Lois have an argument, so when Paige meets her death in a very odd and public way, Lois is a suspect. Millie and Lois know they will have to find the real killer to get suspicion off of Lois, so putting aside all other responsibilities, they begin their own investigation.
This series has a loose connection to the Amish Candy Shop series, set in the same town, so we do see some of the same characters. Pastor Brook is trying to set up a drug counseling center at his church as there has been an uptake in deaths by overdoes in Holmes County. I followed the investigation closely with Lois and Millie sometimes bumbling into things, and I knew it had to have something to do with drugs as these storylines would eventually come together. As always in Amanda Flower's books, there is some humor, light-hearted banter and a good mystery to follow. The characters are well developed and the regulars are all likable. I also enjoy getting a little bit of Amish culture with the cute, funny, and light mysteries. Of course I would be remiss not to mention Lois' goats, they are a hoot and get involved in the story more than once. Although this is the fourth book in the series, it can be read as a standalone, but having read all the books in this series, I recommend you start at the beginning as they are all entertaining mysteries. Vanessa Daniels narrates this audiobook and although not a favourite of mine, she has a pleasant listening voice. I recommend this one in any format depending on your preference.
Millie and Lois are back in action again! I love that the main characters are grandmotherly ages and full of life and vitality! This was a really good addition to this already outstanding series. While there are absolute moments of levity [HOW could there not be with Lois around? And with Ruth Yoder and her pontifications? THOUGH, I think those who read this series will be absolutely surprised by Ruth towards the end of the book; I know I WAS and it was both hilarious and fantastically endearing and makes me like Ruth a little more than I did before], but for the most part [you'd think murder would be enough to put a damper on a book, but alas, not this time], this was a really sad book and extremely true to life and the end/reveal just about broke my heart. There really was no happy ending with this one, but there is HOPE of one and the actions taken by the community of Harvest is very heartwarming indeed.
I want to just go on and on and on about this book, but alas, I cannot. You need to read this one cold. Go in blind and with zero expectations and just experience as the characters do. And then you [like I did] dig deep down in yourself to see how you can be a part of the solution to this problem that is truly everywhere. It will take us all.
Thank you to NetGalley, Amanda Flower, and Kensington Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Millie runs into someone she ever thought she would see in her small town, Gerome Moorhead, one of her best friends many ex's. He happens to have his very young and new bride along with him. Lois is quite upset but Millie isn't quite as shocked. When the new bride ends up dead by way of a large wood carving all eyes turn toward Lois. Millie loves her friend and knows she couldn't have done it.so she sets out to find the truth behind the young woman's murder. Follow along as she delves into the background of Honeybee and also her now widowed husband. Will she find the answers she seeks before Lois ends up behind bars?
I enjoyed the mystery very much. I love this series and the regular characters, and I love seeing how relationships progress in their lives. This book has a subplot about drug problems among teenagers in particular. My sense is that, while the book can be read as a standalone, I would not advise it. You would miss too much background information and character development.
Amish Matchmaker Millie continues to run her farm and help her community as much as she can, occasionally matchmaking. With her many times married Englisch friend Lois, she gets drawn into investigating the suspicious death of Lois’ ex-husband’s new bride. The pair happened to be on the scene when it occurred, but didn’t see the murderer. Lois makes a prime suspect, Millie not so much. They come across info and share, finding multiple suspects, but attention is called to their quest. Deputy Little comes to the same conclusions they do, but Millie is just a little faster. It is an interesting read with humor spicing it up. I enjoy Ms. Flower’s work and would recommend. I requested and received a NetGalley ARC to peruse gratis and offer my opinion in the same.
Take two sixty-something lifelong friends, one Amish one English. Add a quaint small Ohio town. Throw in a murder and a drug trafficking. This is the premise of the fourth Amish Matchmaker Mystery. Author Amanda Flower does a fantastic job of highlighting both cultures that, for the most part, work well together despite their differences. In this particular story, we learn a little more about Lois’s background with her ex-husband. It also sheds light on the often-unspoken drug abuse issues within the Amish community.
Death by cuckoo clock is quite the unexpected manner of murder, and the death of Lois’s ex’s new wife gets the story off to a great start. I do wish readers could have gotten to know Paige a bit better before her demise, by we do learn quite a bit about her through Millie and Lois’s investigation. I like that Millie works with the police, for the most part. Her relationship with Lois is really touching; I can only hope my best friend and I stand the test of time as well.
The mystery provides a satisfying puzzle to solve. There are plenty of potential suspects to keep readers interested. The Amish Matchmaker series is the perfect complement to Flower’s Amish Candy Shop Mystery series, but each series can definitely be read separately. HONEYMOONS CAN BE HAZARDOUS is an entertaining addition to the cozy canon. Highly recommended.
I received an ARC of this title from the author and Kensington Books via NetGalley and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.
Amanda Flower's Amish Matchmaker Mystery Series focuses on seventy-odd-year-old widow Millie Fisher. The mystery in Honeymoons Can Be Hazardous is who brought about the demise of Paige "Honeybee" Moorhead?
Set in Harvest, Ohio, Millie leads an active life; she has her long-time best friend, Englisher, Lois Henry. As reserved as Millie is, Lois is her flamboyant opposite. It is such a fun friendship and I enjoyed reading about the two of them. She also has her quilting circle to keep her occupied. This series is an extension of the author's Amish Candy Shop tales and some of the characters from those mysteries are in this series. Add in mischievous goats, a cat and a pig called Jethro to the mix along with some hilarious moments and the cozy mystery reader has a perfect cozy reading escape.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
