First rule of house-sitting: don’t die on owner’s property. Second rule of house-sitting: especially not on Sheryl Selway’s property.
Finding the house sitter dead in her mother’s pool is not exactly what Hailey expected. Was it an accident or was it murder? Yeah, you guessed it. It was the latter.
But who would want that girl dead? And why? One thing is for sure: Hailey’s mother, Sheryl, won’t get a good night’s sleep until the murder is solved. Or as Sheryl puts it: how to sleep in my house with all those dead body cooties?
Once again, Hailey sets out to find a killer, and has to deal with boy bands, jumping off balconies, minor accidents at a golf course, and the biggest challenge of all: her mother!
Good thing she has her best friend Kat and her hot co-worker reporter Mike to get to the bottom of this mystery.
Deany Ray has always wanted to be a writer so she decided to take the plunge and dive into it. She loves writing cozy mysteries, as this is what she likes to read the most. Her favorite activities are traveling, going to the movie theatre, meeting up with friends and having cooking sessions with her awesome mom.
Sheryl Selway was returning from her trip and was anxious to get home. She had her daughter, Hailey pick her up. Unfortunately, the plan to relax by the pool with a glass of wine wasn't to be. They found the house sitter dead in the pool. Who could have done this? Hailey wants to solve this murder so her mother can feel safe. She works for The Palm Shores Gazette so she can do that. Hailey can be Mike's partner on the crime beat. These two make a great team! I enjoy their sassy dialogue and smoking chemistry. Plus they follow the clues and find the truth. I enjoy the characters and the complicated plot. Hailey's mother may drive her crazy but she's a big help in solving this case. Dead Man's Float is a fast-paced cozy mystery that I couldn't put down. The characters are well written and easy to care about. Deany Ray combined mystery and humor with great skill. I'm looking forward to reading more Hailey Webb mysteries become I know that with her special skill that she'll find another body.
This book was short and sweet. If you pace yourself, on kindle it ends at 87%. There is an excerpt for a previous series. In this book Haley picks her mom up from airport. She's been out of town getting work done. That ends up turning onto a few smiles along the way. When they arrive at home, the house sitter is floating in the pool. With as many bodies she has found, you'd think she would remember she works for a paper and call Mike or her boss. She should absolutely call the police, but you'd think she'd let them know. I can't tell if she and Mike have the worlds slowest slow burn romance going or if they are just going to remain friends. They work together sleuthing their way through the whodunit. Haley almost gets killed again. Told from her POV. The mystery is resolved. Each book can be a stand alone.
When Hailey Webb collects her mother Sheryl Selway at the airport after her Paris trip, she returns with quite a surprised look on her face as apparently, while in Paris on business, she also had some work done on her face. Hopefully as the face relaxes, Sheryl will soon have a more natural look. The surprise on her face is soon a look of shock and disbelief as Hailey and Sheryl find a body floating in the swimming pool. When co-worker and reporter Mike hears the news, he and Hailey begin investigating for the Palm Shore Gazette for what could be a front-page story. For Hailey it will mean a peace of mind to find who left a body in her mother’s pool. This is a terrific series that includes some humor with one scene making me laugh so hard, I had tears in my eyes.
Wow!What a rush who knew being a fact finder would be so exciting for dangerous? I sure didn't. But Deany Ray sure makes it sound a lot more exciting with her characters, so vibrant, strong stylish women and drule worthy men, this adventurous cozey mystery with mayhem and murder is full of intrigue, lies and secrets. The characters draw you in wanting to get to know them better while the mystery entices you further but the plot is what keeps you captivated and turning page after page with its drama, comical schemes as much as the twists in finding out the who done. Deany Ray is a high caliber writer and doesn't disappoint with the fabulous writing. Acquire " Dead Man's Float " so you yourself can enjoy it as much as I have. 😀 Kat
Sheryl Selway, Hailey’s mother, is greeted by a dead body in her pool as she returns from her trip. Is it the house sitter she hired? To ease her mother’s mind, Hailey and friends start investigating the murder. Mike and Hailey visit the elite house sitting company that Mrs. Selway hired, Safe with Us House Sitters, but nobody knows anything, or at least anything that they are willing to share. There is also the dead girl’s boyfriend, or is he an ex-boyfriend? Suspects abound and twists and turns make it impossible to figure out “who done it.” This is my favorite series by Deany Ray. It was impossible to put it down. I highly recommend this book. I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
This book starts with a bang and keeps going as Hailey finds a dead body in her mother’s pool. Her mother is not too happy about it either. Hailey and her friend Mike decide to solve the murder on their own tracking down clues to the murderer.
This is easy reading that keeps the momentum going throughout the book. I found it hard to put down because I wanted to find out the killer’s identity and couldn’t guess who it was.
There were great characters who made the story exciting and left me wanting more.
I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to more books from this author. Thank you for a great plot and interesting characters.
Life as usual for Hailey Webb . . . and a dead body in her mother's pool!
Since mom can't even THINK about sleeping in a house with dead people cooties, it's up to Hailey to solve the murder. And in her inimitable fashion, solve it she does.
Another fun quick read from Deany Ray, a great way to pass a late summer afternoon!
[I was fortunate to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of the book from the author, with no obligation to review. The opinions expressed herein are given freely and are entirely my own.]
I’ve read 4 of these novels in quick succession as they are easy reads and they typically star at 3 rating as their average yet enjoyable reads however the dialogue in this particular book between Hailey and her mother truly tickled me. I hope they’ll include her more in the upcoming novels because she is hysterical.
In contrast the slow burn romantic subplot of “will they, won’t they” takes up too much of the story as the love interest is a main character in the investigations. I find it exhausting and would prefer if the focus was less cheesy romance novella.
Very short book, and not much humor in the newest Hailey Webb adventure. There was a murder in her mother's house that was a natural downer for most of the mother/daughter scenes that usually spark more humor. Even Hailey's time with co-worker Mike wasn't as fun as previous books. Sure there were funny moments, but just not as many as in the past 3 books. This wasn't my favorite in the series, however it's a solid mystery with an ending I didn't see coming.
What an unwelcome homecoming gift! When Hailey picks her mother up at the airport and delivers her home, they find the housesitter's dead body in the pool. To ease her mother's mind she starts her own investigation into the murder with the help of coworker, Mike. Great characters and plenty of humor. There are enough suspects to keep you guessing. I truly enjoyed the book and am enjoying this series. I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my honest and freely offered review.
I really liked this book. It had my interest from the first page until the end. I wasn't sure who did it (I had a couple guesses but I was wrong). I like the characters and even after I have put these books down for awhile I can pick them back up and feel like I am returning to old friends. I can't wait to read more in this series! Totally worth your time to read this book.
this book opens with a dead body in Hailey's mother's pool. the body is her house sitter! Hailey and Mike are on the search for clues in the murder for a story in the Gazette. So much happening in this story, a murder, a boy band, golf course shenanigans, so much mayhem! A wonderful fun read with lots of twist and turns, making this a real page turner and a must must read!
This is another enjoyable story in this series. It is a puzzling mystery filled with humor and interesting characters. Hailey and Mike seem like the dynamic crime solving duo. Although this time they get a little help from Hailey's mom and a friend. Definitely a great read!
Laugh out loud comedy within a mystery. Hailey just gets better with each book! She’s on the case to find the killer of her mother’s house sitter or she may have a permanent houseguest! Next, please!
Yet another hilarious mystery in a high quality humourous mystery series. The drama queen mom is expertly crafted to be extra hilarious in this volume. Can't wait to see what happens next!
Too many winks! I cringe at each one and it's totally distracting from the story! I don't know anybody who winks. And if someone did wink at me, I'd immediately wonder why! And move away from them.
Do NOT read in public as chortles will ensue with this PG media cozy mystery set in Glenndale, California that takes a long day to read. I had an ARC via Bookfunnel and this is my voluntary review.
Love love love this series. I'm doing a reading challenge so I was looking for easy reads, but this series ended up being a favourite. I read all 4 in 3 days 🫣 can't wait for the next one!
