Keep her happy, or heads will roll …

DI Jamie Johansson is trying to find normality in Kurrajakk when she gets the chance to sit in on the Interpol interview linked to her last case.

A pattern of mutilation and beheading on the Finnish border has Jamie’s full attention, but Interpol seem more interested in the Russian connection. Begrudgingly, they let her follow up, and as usual, Jamie’s nose for trouble doesn’t steer her wrong.

The lake-side town of Leppasalmi is bathed in darkness for three months a year, and as Jamie and Thorsen arrive, the sun begins to set for the polar night. The local polis superintendent is working to keep her people safe from an ever-present threat and knows the long night always spells trouble. Wary of strangers and afraid to step foot outside, the entire town hunkers down for dusk. The denizens have accepted the abductions and killings as a part of life, but Jamie and Thorsen refuse to kneel.

The Ice Queen’s word may be law, but Jamie has never been good at taking orders …

First and foremost, a large thank you to Morgan Greene for providing me with a copy of this novel, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

I was pleased to be handed an ARC for this novel, the ninth in the Jamie Johansson collection and sixth in this DI Johansson series. Greene does a formidable job at advancing his protagonist effectively and keeps her criminal investigations on point. With some stellar narrative techniques and a story that never allows the reader to catch their breath, there is something electric about this novel, which is said to be the last in this vein of Jamie Johansson novels. Greene impresses and eager readers should devour the entire collection soon.

Tying off some loose ends from a previous case, DI Jamie Johansson is permitted to sit in on an Interpol interview. It is then that she realises that there is much more to the story than her investigation uncovered, with some whispers of new and brutal crime along the Finnish border. However, Interpol officials seem more interested in the Russian angle, hoping to nab someone swiftly.

After reluctantly being given the green light, DI Johansson and her partner make their way up to Leppasalmi, a town that does not see much light for three winter months. While the locals have come to accept the danger at night, locking themselves away at dusk, DI Johansson cannot accept this and uses her penchant for finding crime to see what’s been going on.

Local lore talks of an Ice Queen who hunts those who have committed some grievance, though specifics are never revealed to DI Johansson. However, the killings are both brutal and focussed, using killing tools from bygone eras and in different parts of the world. As DI Johansson inches closer, she is caught in the web of the Ice Queen and may soon become one of the bodies left as a deterrent to those who would think to dethrone Her Majesty. Scrambling for answers while juggling some personal struggles of her own, DI Jamie Johansson makes a move to help the residents of Leppasalmi, even if it is the last thing she does! Greene weaves a stunning story together and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat throughout.

I can be guaranteed of a great read when Morgan Greene is at the helm. It was a random ‘would you read my book?’ request by the author that got me hooked on Jamie Johansson and her criminal adventures, something I have never regretted. Greene has done so much to develop Johansson’s character, moving her from the UK to Sweden, where crimes are just as sadistic. However as mentioned in the author’s note, there is something new on the horizon for DI Johansson, which is sure to spice things up for series fans who have come to adore this gritty copper with a backstory like few others.

Greene uses his quick writing style to pull the reader into the middle of the story by the end of the second chapter. There’s so much going on and the action seems never to wane. Throughout the story, a handful of new and recurring characters make themselves known and keep the reader highly entertained. That said, as Greene admits in his personal note, he may have piled on too many things with too many characters to be easily digested in a single story. Great plot twists and a criminal vein of happenings keeps the story focussed and allows the reader to feel attached to what’s happening. With a smattering of Swedish and Finnish, the reader can feel as though they are in the middle of the case and in rural Sweden, where English is not common. I cannot say enough about Morgan Greene or the series, though I am interested to see what the new perspective will do for the series. While I have always said that there’s no need to fix something that’s not broken, I can see the advantage of the odd tweak to make things run a little more smoothly. I await the tenth instalment with anticipation.

Kudos, Mr. Greene, for another winning piece!

Happy Publication Day to Morgan Greene and Ice Queen.
Many Thanks to this very talented author for the ARC.
This is terrifying follow up to the harrowing Quiet Wolf. After sitting I on an interview about her last case she is off to Leppasalmi a lake side town which goes dark three months of the year. When Jamie and her partner Thorsen arrive it is the start of the polar night. The town is wary of strangers and most of the police are bought and paid for. People go missing never to be seen again. This town is terrified of a huntress called the Queen. She keeps these missing prisoner until she is ready to play.
I devoured this book in one sitting and finally turned the last page in the wee hours. I love the main character Jamie a kick ass female detective who tries really hard to stay inside the law. Atmospheric, plenty of heart in your mouth moments, abhorrent and bloody terrifying. The sixth book in this series and All are five star reads. One of my favourite authors has done it again and a teaser for his next book. Highly recommended.

I was fortunate enough to be sent an advanced reader copy of this book from the author 😊

I had loved all the books in this series so far so I couldn't wait to get stuck into this one. I have to say I think it's Morgans best book so far, I could not put it down and absolutely devoured it!

Hands down the best book I have read this year and I have read a lot 😊

I would thoroughly recommend this series of books, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks once again Morgan and congratulations on another fantastic read, looking forward to your next one.

I have read all of the series so far and particularly like nordic noir. I will read the next one even if I don't like Jamie or find her character believable. Having said that I still want to find out what happens. Bit annoyed to find one supposedly dead character from the previous book had escaped, not that it really impacted on the story. I do like attention to detail and reread the ending of the last one just to make sure I hadn't misunderstood. There is one book in the series that read like a screenplay but overall it is readable fiction.

Gaping plotholes

I've read reviews on this book and absolutely no where does anyone mention the giant galling gaping plothole!!!
NOAH DIED AT THE END OF QUIET WOLF !!! So how exactly is he all of a sudden alive in this book thorson severed his aorta then Jamie kicked him out of a window , he's described as dead several times skip to ice queen and he's crossing Russian borders HOW ?? This absolutely ruined the entire book for me and I struggled to even read it how exactly does an author forget he killed someone off ??

First, Jamie was not my most favorist female protagonist. Her in your face style and running off to do her own thing was a bit more pronounced in this series than in other series I'm reading.

But the biggest problem was that this essentially a continuation of the prior book which, although I liked, the whodunit part wasn't to my liking.

I was surprised to see the cult and its disgusting practices back as the subject of this book and to be honest just didn't want to read about it anymore.

No point in reading something that turns your stomach when there are so many other fun and interesting whodunits to read.

And, no I'm not sure about #7 at this point.

So I quit.

I give this whole series a 3.5. It's not high literature, but it is entertaining when I want something "light" to listen to. I do recommend it.

I'm finally reading these books in order and really like what Morgan Greene says in the next book. The Ice Queen was an extension of the other two books that I read. It seems right that things didn't go as planned but Jamie Johansson and Thorsen ended up being fired. That's all I'll say but it should give you some good vibes.

You would wonder how this recipe would work out, putting a Welsh author now living in Canada and writing about Scandinavian crime, with a reader from England who really loves UK crime fiction and does not have much knowledge of Scandinavia, but the author provides a reall master class in writing great books.
This is the sixth novel in the DI Jamie Johansson series. I read, and reviewed the first 3 books but, due to other commitments, I have not yet read the last 2 books. The author really impressed me right from his original prequels and I love the character of Jamie.
Despite not reading the last two books I was still able to get along well with this book but there is a background story so I would suggest you try to read them all. With Morgan Greene you never know what type of book you are going to get but you always know that you will get a great read.
This book is a little different from the norm but that is part of being drawn into the book. It is not a usual type of thriller and there are scenes in the book that could easily be transported into great scenes for a fantasy or historical film as the writing is very powerful and takes you to, not only another place, but to another dimension.
There are some unanswered questions in th book but there is so much going on that this will not disturb you and the author admits to these unanswered questions but these could lead to so many other books of different genres. I do not want to give any spoilers so difficult to explain but if you like lots of action with a psychological edge then you should really get this book and read it. I feel it is probably one of those books that you will want to read again and learn new things from it.
I am so looking forward to the next book in the series, Black Heart, which the author promises us will be totally different again.
Many thanks to Morgan Greene, independent author, for providing me with an advanced copy of the e-book in return for a honest, unbiased review.

I've been a massive fan of this author since coming across Angel Maker. This started the second trilogy, of which this series of 9 books is made up.
I fell in love with Jamie, she's not really a good person, but she's not bad either. She's ballsy, independent and takes no crap.
As the books have continued, Morgans writing has developed, matured, and improved doesn't seem strong enough but that's all I have.
Then we come to Ice Queen, picking up after the chaos of the Etterange and the Farm. A book that took my breath away.
The story continues, slowly building, as they try and discover what is going on in a small northern town where the eternal night has set in.
Thorsen and much to Jamie's chagrin, Elliot/Charlie are along for the ride.
This is told entirely from Jamie's point of view.
The setting of Leppsalmi is perfect. I fould feel the biting cold, sense the oppressive darkness.
Thorsen, since his introduction, has become one of my favourite characters, and there is a real rollercoaster for him and Jamie.
It was nice to see a little of Hallberg back, and we pick up with Elliot, someone from Jamie's past that was a nice little cliffhanger from the end of the last book.
At times you soften to him, then a word or look reminds you he's a ruthless psychopath. I must admit I was never totally sure.
This was one of those rare books that transports you within its pages and makes you forget you're reading a book. Another brilliant breathtaking read from this fantastic author.

A little rough at times but interesting enough to keep going

It's sometimes hard to follow the description of places and get an image, but it doesn't detract too much from the story. It's definitely not the most realistic series and Jamie is not the most likeable character, but her story is still interesting to follow.
Still confused about a certain character who seems to be a plot hole / editing mistake, though.

Wow. Another Jamie Johansson book done and I still love this series as much as I did after reading the first book (not that this was ever in doubt). I tried putting off reading the latest instalment as much as I could, as I know after that we enter the waiting period, but I gave in because I just had to know where Jamie’s next life threatening adventure was gonna take her, and I was not disappointed!!

This story takes place not too long after the previous book, and takes you on a crazy ride in a short amount of time. The dynamic duo has now been turned into a trio (that’s if we don’t count Hati), now that Elliott has joined them. The interactions between Jamie and Elliott were very interesting, there seemed to be this push and pull almost kind of reaction between them, and I loved the fact that even though you know Elliott is this character who has done horrible things, you (just like Jamie) can’t fully hate him either. Selfishly, I would’ve loved to know what was going through Thorsen’s in this story, as he seemed to be going through it. But I also appreciate that opening the door to multiple points of view makes for an even more sprawled out and complex story, and I’m very happy with what we got regardless. The story of this Ice Queen in this small town hunting people the way she does was the perfect amount of crazy/scary. Whilst I may have had an inkling on who she was, Morgan Greene is just so good at giving you hints and making you think you’ve got the answer, only to reveal a much more intricate web behind that. The end took me by surprise, as I was not expecting it, and has made even more curious to see where Jamie goes next. And as much as I want her to find her happy ever after (which I’d like to think after reading this book, is an option), I do also love her crazy, dangerous, life threatening adventures!

I think what truly caught my attention in this book is seeing the development in Jamie. It’s no secret she’s been through a fair share of sh*t and I absolutely love the fact that we are seeing her turning her back to all those things that used to define her in the past. I highly recommend this book, you’ll find yourself sucked in and will devour it in no time! Hats off to Morgan Greene for another amazing book, can’t wait for Black Heart!!

This is book 6 in the DI Jamie Johansson series and it’s another absolutely cracking read. It could be read as a stand-alone but it is a continuation of the previous book so I would definitely recommend reading that first. In all honesty this is such a good series I would suggest you go back to the first book and read the lot. You’ll thank me. It’s so well written that I was absorbed into it so quickly, the first chapter is a doozy and all thoughts of cooking meals or going shopping went out of my head for 24 hours until I finished it (disclaimer - I did eat but with my kindle on the tray)!

Briefly, at the end of the last book Jamie promised Ulla Boehman’s husband and daughter, and herself, that she would find the missing woman, and Jamie never goes back on her word. Her work partner Thorsen goes along with her but so does Elliott Day a serial killer who once saved her life. They are on the hunt for the Ice Queen, a woman who seems to have made it her mission to rid the town of undesirables as well as hunting and killing other people brought in to provide her with ‘sport’. They little expected to find that she appears to be revered in the small town of Leppasalmi and their every move is being watched and reported back. They are soon in extreme danger. Can they save Ulla and stop the killings?

If you read one of Greene’s books you should know there’s going to be a certain degree of gore and graphic brutality, so be prepared. What he also does brilliantly is make you care about his characters: I already loved the characters of Jamie and Thorsen but I found myself strangely attracted to Elliott. Despite all the dreadful things he’s done, and they are really dreadful, he seems to have an almost caring side to him, and he certainly cares for Jamie. I loved this book and as the author explains in the appendix there are matter left hanging so I think we know that we will be reunited with some of our characters again, albeit in a different guise. Fast paced, exciting and at times breath-holding story. Brilliant book.

If you haven’t read any of the Jamie Johansson books, this isn’t the one to start with. The story connects directly with the last book & one of the characters reappears from the prequels of this six book series. Six books - seems unbelievable, I’ve read them all & this is the best.

Jamie & Thorsen are kicking their heels now that Interpol have taken over their case from the last book. Together with Elliot (a memorable character from the prequels) they find themselves en route to the Finnish/Swedish border & investigating the disappearances of many locals & also the discovery of dismembered bodies. They arrive when a community party is in full swing, celebrating the darkness which will envelop that far north for many weeks but the festivities culminate with a curious cheer of ‘The Queen’.
Our trio realise that this figurehead is tidying up the town of lowlife & that no one is standing up to her. Of course, that is like a red rag to a bull where Jamie is concerned & the adventure starts in earnest.

A breathtaking tale, well written predominantly relying on show not tell. We already know that this is the end for Jamie as we know her. Where next I wonder? I, for one, can’t wait to find out.

#6 DI Jamie Johansson

There is a thread which is continued from the previous book, so it might be better if they are read in order. I have read the previous book, but had totally forgotten what had happened.

It starts with a great hook. The author continues to hone his writing keeping the style tight and polished.

Jamie is investigating murders involving decapitation. It means travelling to Leppasalmi another small town, this one on the Swedish Finnish border. They arrive in the midst of winter where they don’t get to see daylight at all for 6 weeks, She has Thorsen with her, but also he tags along Elliott and Hati.
Now Elliott/ Charlie I can’t figure out, he’s bad, he’s a killer, he describes himself as broken. Jamie hates him, but I can’t help liking him. His actions don’t always seem to tie up with his past. I’m intrigued by him, and how much he seems to know about everything. I need to check out the prequels to find out more about him.

There’s a good mix of character development, emotional content and action. It’s another cracking read, I highly recommend it.

Wow! I had to stop and take stock and catch my breath after finishing this. I found ir such an intense read. I can't begin to explain how much I love this series. Continuing on from the events in the previous book, Jamie, Thorsen and Elliot now are on the border with Finland after noticing a pattern of missing people and dismembered bodies.

As expected, this is a bit gruesome with some seriously weird and twisted characters and the pace moves along at a rollicking pace. Once you're hooked, there is no escape and I found myself holding my breath on numerous occasions. There is so much going on that it could be quite easy to lose track but I was so entrenched in the story, I didn't care. I was totally consumed by everything I was reading,

It feels like things are coming to a conclusion for Jamie but I have solace in knowing that there is a tenth book coming next year. Also being Jamie, things would never wrap up neatly anyway would they?

Kudos to the author on another brilliant addition to a fantastic series.

Another good read

This was another good read from Morgan Greene. It's set at an electric pace and extremely well written and very difficult to put down. Saying that I was a bit underwhelmed by the ending which seemed a bit rushed and not all the as questions that had built up through out the trilogy were answered. But after reading the authors note that was his intention which I found a bit strange. Also D I Jamie Johansson is turning into some sort of superhero or unkillable eighties action hero. I found some parts totally unbelievable for example dodging crossbow bolts after surviving weeks of imprisonment and torture. That being said it still did not stop me from staying up until 1am to finish the book. Which is down to how the author makes you care about the characters and the dangers they face no matter how fantastical. I will look forward to reading more from this author. Hopefully it will be more of a detective story and not an action movie. Onto book 7.

What a powerful, dark and creepy thriller! A brillant atmospheric setting in the darkness of winter in North Sweden and Finland has taken me on a disturbing, dark and chilling journey. Even the main characters carried around some darkness about them, some more, some less than the others... The plot is excellent, complex in its development. Jamie is at her best fighting against herself as well as the case she is working on. Much disturbing violence made me wish for less horrible acts but I could not put the book down! The very end of the book might feel rushed, but for me it fitted the situation perfectly.... I have followed Jamie for the 10th time and can't wait for an 11th novel!
I received a complimentary ARC of this thriller from the author, thank you so much Morgan, and I am leaving voluntarily an honest review.

I can’t tell you how excited I was to receive the notification that Ice Queen was ready to download! I’m totally addicted to Morgan Greene’s books and Ice Queen did not disappoint. It picks up where Quiet Wolf ended and very quickly escalates into another very suspenseful and dark thriller. Jamie, Thorsen and Elliot are in the town of Leppasalmi to investigate the mutilation and beheadings of people as well as following up on leads concerning the previous case. The local police superintendent is trying her best to protect her people but can’t fight the influence and power of the people behind all the evil events. There are some great plot twists as well.
Morgan Greene is a very generous author and shares his process and thinking with the reader at the end, describing his thinking on the follow up on Ice Queen.

Wow! This book literally had me on the edge of my seat! Full of drama and action that keeps you wanting more!

Having read the previous eight novels in this series, I've followed the journey of Jamie Johansson and the development of her character. This book explores a more softer side to Jamie and we see how she slowly opens herself up to love. We also see the reappearance of her nemesis Elliot. Will she be able to finally kill him?

The story is suspenseful and at times harrowing. I literally couldn't put the book down! Another fantastic novel by Morgan Greene. Each book in this series has been fantastic and thrilling. It's been interesting to see how the character of Jamie has developed. Will she ever be able to find her happy ever after? Can't wait until 2023 to read the next book in the series!

Great Read

Still reeling from the events at the Farm and being shut out of the investigation once Interpol took over. Jamie, with her nose for trouble, and her still unfulfilled promise, Jamie looks into where those that fled the Farm may have ended up. When she approaches Interpol with her theory, they basically laugh in her face and take the investigation in a whole other direction. Jamie decides to look into it herself and what she discovers shocks even her and nothing could have prepared her for the fight that lies ahead.

Another intriguing and interesting plot line, that brings past players back on to the scene and causes Jamie to question even her own motives. As she tackles her most difficult case, that's not really hers to investigate, and not knowing who she can trust can she come out of this latest investigation alive and will anyone believe her?

First class.

I forgot how compelling and totally absorbing Morgan Greene's writing is. I'm not going to talk about story lines and plots, you need to unfold those for yourself. Suffice to say the characters are engaging, deeply disturbing but satisfying. The ins and outs of emotions really booked me.
I read and listened which have me that wonderful voice of the narrator. The beautiful accent that took you straight to Sweden.
I loved this and wonder where it will go next. Enjoy both the book and the audio version. You won't be disappointed.

Tension and suspended belief

On many levels I do enjoy this series but the books are variable. This one did little for me. Yes there is good dialogue, much tension but also requires huge quantities of suspended belief. Elliot was fun for a while but no real surprises here and I guessed a few keys things about several characters early on. The reveal was very quick (a paragraph or so) after so much build up. Least favorite book in Series. Nothing is living up to Angel Maker and the prelude three book set (London).

Good fast paced read

I have read the books where Jamie Johaansen lands back in Sweden. The books are well written and fast paced. The stories build upon me another but can be read as stand alone novels. The author has tapped into the different psyche of the Scandinavian people., Which I have previously encountered in Henning Mankle's Wallander series, and the author has created a believable characters. There are a few twists but none too taxing for the reader to struggle with. An enjoyable dark read

Loved, loved, loved this book. From the first word on the first page, you're caught. I literally devoured this book, every chance I could get my kindle was open and I was running through the chapters as it's so difficult to put down.

You either love or hate Eliot, he's a very clever character. Thorsen is fabulous, there were moments when I just laughed out loud. I don't want to spoil anything, just read the book! I've pre-ordered book 10 already.
