Listen to the unrestful dead of the Buckeye State's many graveyards Throughout Ohio, chilling tales abound of places where the dead do not rest in their peaceful earthen beds. In a field east of Cleveland, the ghost of a missing farmhand returned to expose his murder. The violin music of a Cincinnati-area abolitionist continues to linger at a small burial ground in the hills west of the city, and a grave in Central Ohio is haunted by the spirit of a young girl with an ancestral connection to a dark chapter of America's past. E.R. Cutright, founder of Columbus Ghost Tours in Columbus, explores the sundry Ohio cemeteries and graveyards where the dead demand their stories be told.
This was a fun read that brought me back to when I used to devour all the books about true hauntings available at the library. Being from the Toledo area originally, I also got to reminisce about all of the ghost stories we grew up with there lol. What I really like is the effort Cutright takes to research the historical basis for all the ghost stories, attempting to put spirits to names without shying away from the inconsistencies between the two.
I bought this book in person at the author's guided walk of Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus. The walk was amazing and my friends and I had such a blast! (Dear Author, if you're reading this, please know that we keep bringing it up in person and talking about how we so badly want to come back for the new castle tour you mentioned putting together). Cutright does a great job of telling the stories of the deceased and if you're ever planning a trip to Columbus, I highly suggest signing up! As good as the book is, it has nothing on hearing the stories in person! Bucky was SO incredibly entertaining and refreshingly respectful of the deceased.
"When the pages of this book have turned to dust and the eyes that read them have become hollow sockets, the Angel of Death will remain victorious." (Pg. 134). What a stunning way to end this book!
Wow, what a fantastic book. Nonfiction always takes me longer to get through, so it's not really a complaint at this point more of an expectation, but it didn't take me as long as some others! The writing was really well done! I love how he talked about the legends as well as some historical facts that don't necessarily say every legened is true or written in stone, so to speak. I think my favorites through this have to be the woman whose horse murdered her remarried husband after her death and suddenly a horse print appeared on her tombstone; as well as the boy whose dog remained at his grave after his death and are said to be playing together in the cemetery as spirits! How adorable 🥹❤️ They've included some amazing photographs through this as well, I love seeing all the sculptures made in this! I was fortunate enough to be able to buy an author signed copy of this through my work, (signed in front of me too so I actually got to briefly meet the author!!!! So cool!!!) so I'm very, very excited to have finally read it as well 😊💗

As the title suggests, this is a book about the haunted cemeteries of Ohio that I appropriately got from the author at the Loveland Frogman Festival (so you can see the type of reader I am). I think that most of the history in this is relatively correct (at least the parts I've looked up).
As a paranormal investigator and taphophile this is more like a travel guide to me than anything. I hadn't heard of some of these cemeteries even ones not that far from me like Woodlawn in Ironton which made me travel down there. (How was I to pass up a place that holds some of Edward Gorey's ashes?)
I'm also a history buff and that's what you get with this, the history (as best as it can be teased out in some cases) along with the paranormal reports. The writing was good, engaging, not dry as some history text can be. I'm hanging onto this one because I have more traveling to do.
Broken down by area this book explored several different haunted cemeteries in Ohio. I particularly enjoyed the small almost forgotten cemeteries with a wealth of lore around the ghost/ghosts that haunted them. For the larger cemeteries, I know that there are more than the stories in this book, but it was nice to at least know where a few of these places are.
Very entertaining and well written, this book blends fact and, when necessary, speculation to shine a light on some dark tales in cemeteries throughout the state. Highly recommend!
